‘F— the police’: Chelsea Manning slams cops on Law …

Chelsea Manning, 29, was released in January, 28 years early from a 35-year prison sentence for publishing illegally more than 700,000 classified government documents on WikiLeaks. (AP)

As many people across the country recognized Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Tuesday, convicted spy Chelsea Manning took to Twitter to blast the men and women in blue.

F--- the police,Manning tweetedout on Tuesday, followed by #DisarmThePolice#WeGotThis.

Manning doubled down on her position sending out a series of tweets with seemingly unsourced stats.

Manning, who was known as Bradley Manning before transitioning in prison after her arrest in 2010, was convicted in 2013 of 20 counts, including Espionage Act violations, theft and computer fraud.

She was responsible for the release of more than 700,000 classified government documents on WikiLeaks.

Manning was cleared of her most serious charge of aiding the enemy.

In his final days in office, President Barack Obamagranted Manning clemency, and she was released from military prison last May after serving seven years of her 35-year sentence.

Manning has used the social media platform in the past to share other brash messages.

On Veterans Day, she tweeted, Want to support veterans!? Stop sending us overseas to kill or be killed for your nationalist fairy tales. We can do better.

The tweet prompted backlash from conservatives, who criticized Manning for being a traitor.

Chelsea Manning tweets ‘F*** the police’ on Law Enforcement …

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

January 9th is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and to mark the occasion, convicted spy Chelsea Manning took to Twitter to send the following message:

Manning pleaded guilty to espionage and theft in 2013 after releasing classified military documents to WikiLeaks in 2010. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison.

In his final days in office, President Barack Obama commuted Mannings remaining sentence saying the original sentence was very disproportionate relative to what other leakers have received.

Lets be clear, Chelsea Manning has served a tough prison sentence, President Obama said during his final press conference. The notion that the average person who is thinking about exposing vital classified information will think that it goes unpunished; I dont think would get that impression from the sentence that Chelsea Manning has served.

Manning ultimately served a little over three years of the original sentence.

Manning his lived in Maryland. since May 2017

India’s Aadhaar open for abuse: Edward Snowden

NEW DELHI: Whistleblower Edward Snowden has become the latest to raise alarm about the vulnerability of the Aadhaar database, a day after the Tribune newspaper reported that an administrator login ID and password to gain access to the UID portal could be acquired for as little as Rs 500.

Retweeting CBS journalist Zack Whittaker's response on a BuzzFeed report on the breach of Aadhaar database in India, Snowden said, "It is the natural tendency of government to desire perfect records of private lives. History shows that no matter the laws, the result is abuse."

Whittaker had earlier said, "ICYMI. India has a national ID database with the private information of nearly 1.2 billion nationals. It has reportedly been breached. Admin accounts can be made and access can be sold to the database, reports BuzzFeed."

On Thursday, The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which administers the Aadhaar project, defended the system's security protocols and rejected a report about the ease with which the system can be infiltrated and demographic data accessed.

"Claims of bypassing or duping the Aadhaar enrolment system are totally unfounded," UIDAI said in a press release. "Aadhaar data is fully safe and secure and has robust uncompromised security. The UIDAI data centres are infrastructure of critical importance and is protected accordingly with high technology conforming to the best standards of security and also by legal provisions."

Snowden a former CIA contractor leaked classified government documents to expose the US National Security Agency's internet and phone surveillance in 2013. He has been since living in exile.

According to the Tribune report, whoever had administrator login ID and password would get access to demographic details of Aadhaar holders. The report also alleged there were around 100,000 illegal users and that the racket might have started six months ago. ET has not been able to verify the authenticity of the report.

The UIDAI said it had provided the search facility for the purpose of grievance redressal to designated personnel and state government officials to help Aadhaar holders by entering the ID or enrollment number, such as updating addresses.

"UIDAI maintains complete log and traceability of the facility and any misuse can be traced and appropriate action taken," it said. "The reported case appears to be instance of misuse of the grievance redressal search facility. As UIDAI maintains complete log and traceability of the facility, the legal action including lodging of FIR against the persons involved in the instant case is being done."

It also added that "mere display of demographic information cannot be misused without biometrics."

Experts said that even though biometric details may not have been accessed, leaking of demographic details was a substantial breach in itself and have called for a review of the security practices of Aadhaar.

Julian Assange’s stay in London embassy untenable, says …

Ecuadors foreign minister has said Julian Assanges five-and-a-half-year stay in her countrys London embassy is untenable and should be ended through international mediation.

The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up in Knightsbridge since the summer of 2012, when he faced the prospect of extradition to Sweden over claims that he sexually assaulted two women. He denies the accusations.

Swedish prosecutors last year unexpectedly dropped their investigation into the allegations, which included a claim of rape. But Assange still faces arrest for breaching bail conditions if he steps outside the embassy and WikiLeaks has voiced fears that the US will seek his extradition and that there is a sealed indictment ordering his arrest.

WikiLeaks publications have included hundreds of thousands of US army war logs and state department diplomatic cables and more recently emails from the Democratic National Committee during the run-up to the 2016 US presidential election. The US attorney general, Jeff Sessions, said last May that Assanges arrest was now a priority.

Ecuadors foreign minister, Mara Fernanda Espinosa, said her country was now seeking a third country or a personality to mediate a final settlement with the UK to resolve the impasse and said it was considering and exploring the possibility of mediation.

No solution will be achieved without international cooperation and the cooperation of the United Kingdom, which has also shown interest in seeking a way out, she told foreign correspondents in Quito, according to Agence France-Presse.

Assange, who has received numerous visitors to his modest quarters in the embassy, ranging from Nigel Farage to Lady Gaga, has described the period since his initial arrest as a terrible injustice. Not being able to see his children grow up was not something I can forgive, he said.

For several years, Metropolitan police officers maintained a constant watch of the embassy, which is situated behind Harrods in central London, at a cost of at least 11.1m, according to figures released by Scotland Yard in June 2015. Four months later, police lifted the round-the-clock guard on the basis it was no longer proportionate.

A United Nations panel concluded in 2016 that Assange was under arbitrary detention.

On Tuesday evening, a lawyer for Assange appeared to welcome Ecuadors proposal. He said his client had a right to asylum and argued that the risk of him being persecuted in the US had escalated further in recent months under the Trump administrations war on WikiLeaks and that the investigation in Sweden had twice been discontinued.

If the UK wishes to show that it is a nation that respects its human rights obligations and commitments to the United Nations, it is time for Mr Assange to be allowed to enjoy his right to liberty, and fundamental right to protection against persecution in the United States, she said.

A spokesperson for the UK government said: The government of Ecuador knows that the way to resolve this issue is for Julian Assange to leave the embassy to face justice.

Bradley Manning: Whistle-blower or traitor? He awaits judge’s …

Story highlights

Or is he, as the prosecution contends, a traitor who leaked classified material to WikiLeaks that he knew could assist terrorists?

But Manning refused to plead guilty to the most serious allegations, including that of aiding enemies of the United States -- a charge that falls under the Espionage Act and carries a sentence of life in prison, if convicted.

As the soldier sits in a military prison cell at Maryland's Fort Meade awaiting word of his fate, questions remain about what damage his actions caused to U.S. intelligence gathering.

The answer depends on who is doing in the talking.

But Manning's attorney, David Coombs, told the court Friday that despite claims that the leaks harmed national security, the Army did not make any major changes to its operation.

It's a sentiment that has been echoed publicly by his supporters.

"They really have not reported any great impact. More embarrassment than anything else," Kevin Zeese of the Bradley Manning Support Network, an online group that supports the soldier's actions and has been raising funds for his legal defense.

Embarrassing or not, the publication of the leaks rocked the U.S. government, with then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saying the release of the material threatened the lives of Americans and damaged foreign relationships.

Prosecution witnesses have testified Manning downloaded and leaked 400,000 Pentagon field reports from Iraq and 90,0000 similar documents from Afghanistan. There evidence also was presented that he downloaded and leaked more than 250,000 State Department cables.

'Collateral Murder' video

The video was shot from a U.S. Apache helicopter as it opened fire on a group of people in Baghdad in 2007, killing a dozen people. Among the dead were a Reuters TV news cameraman and his driver.

The video showed Reuters' Saeed Chmagh survived an initial strafing by the helicopter, but apparently died when it opened fire again -- this time on people attempting to get him off the sidewalk where he lay and into a van.

The footage quickly made news, elevating what was once a virtually unknown WikiLeaks to a globally recognized name. Later, a U.S. investigation into the attack found that the crew mistook the journalists' cameras for weapons while seeking out insurgents who had been firing at American troops in the area.

But, according to court documents and testimony, by the time the world saw the video, Manning had already downloaded hundreds of thousands of classified documents and videos.

Within months, Manning was behind bars, accused of using his computer skills to commit what the government called treason.

From Oklahoma to Iraq

It was a far cry from his beginnings.

After working a series of part-time jobs and, at one point, living out of his car, he joined the Army in 2007.

But it was a tough acclimation, his friends later said, in large part because of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. According to friends and his own writings on the Internet, Manning is openly gay.

Then, in 2009, Manning deployed to Iraq.

He was at Forward Operating Base Hammer in southeast Baghdad, where he worked as an analyst reviewing possible threats to U.S. troops.

According to Fein, the prosecutor, within two weeks of his arrival in Iraq, Manning began working with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange over what to leak and how to do it.

Manning spent hours at work during off-hours downloading documents, Fein said.

Manning, the prosecutor said, was well aware of the military's policy about divulging classified material and the repercussions of doing it. The soldier had even taught classes about protecting the material, Fein said.

"Manning had no allegiance to the United States," Fein told the court last week, adding that he was "not a whistle-blower; he was a traitor."

But Manning's attorney offered another picture, one in which the war deeply affected his client.

It began, his attorney told the court, after an attack on a convoy with his comrades. A roadside bomb exploded beneath a car full of civilians that had pulled aside to let the military vehicles pass.

Although members of his 305th Military Intelligence Battalion were not hurt, Coombs said, at least one civilian was killed. That changed Manning's outlook on the war, his lawyer said. He "struggled."

He was further disturbed by the "Collateral Murder" video, the attorney said.

"Did they all deserve to die? That is what Pfc. Manning is seeing when he watches this," Coombs told the judge after playing the video in court.

It was for those reasons, according to Coombs, that Manning then started selecting information to reveal, believing that it would be better if it were public.

Coombs said his client was selective in the information he diverted from a controlled-access computer system where he worked as an "all source" intelligence analyst.

What would you do?

It began with a message said to be posted by Manning, using the instant message handle "bradass87."

"If you had unprecedented access to classified networks 14 hours a day 7 days a week for 8+ months, what would you do?" it read.

According to testimony, that was purportedly part of a string of instant messages that a person sent to Lamo, who was convicted in 2004 for hacking The New York Times, Microsoft and Lexis-Nexis computer systems.

Over a period of days beginning on May 22, 2010, Lamo testified, he and the man identified as Manning instant-messaged about the release of the documents and videos.

Lamo has said he reported Manning to authorities.

Solitary confinement

Manning was arrested in Iraq on May 27, 2010, and then transferred to Kuwait before being returned to the United States two months later.

He was formally charged on July 6, 2010, with violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and the Espionage Act. In March 2011, the military revised the alleged violations and filed 22 charges against Manning.

Crowley resigned just days later amid reports that the Obama administration was furious over his suggestion that Manning was being treated badly.

President Barack Obama publicly defended the conditions of the soldier's detention, telling reporters that he had been assured by the Pentagon that the conditions were appropriate and met basic standards.

Even so, the outcry grew, with academics, medical professionals and others weighing in as Manning's attorney filed motions to move the soldier from the Marine Corps prison at Quantico.

Dueling portraits

During closing statements last week, attorneys on both sides pointed to a picture of a smiling Manning.

Each had their own take on the man in the cross-dressing image that was taken in 2010 while he was on leave -- just weeks before his arrest.

"This is a gleeful, grinning Pfc. Manning," who had little regard for his allegiance to the United States, Fein told the court.

But Coombs told the judge that picture showed a situation in which Manning could "be himself."

The only question now is what portrait of Manning the judge will offer with a verdict.

March 15, 2018

Chelsea Manning speaks on the social, technological, and economic ramifications of Artificial Intelligence, and on the practical applications of machine learning. She is an advocate of queer and transgender rights and government transparency. During her time as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense, Manning publicly disclosed classifed documents that she felt revealed human rights abuses and corruption connected to the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan during her deployment in Iraq in 2009. Upon being sentenced to 35 years for leaking government documents, she publicly identifed as a trans woman and asserted her legal rights to medical therapy. After serving seven years in military prison, President Barack Obama commuted her sentence; she was released in 2017. Heather Dewey-Hagborg is a bio-political artist and educator. In her creative collaboration with Chelsea Manning, Probably Chelsea (2017), Dewey-Hagborg received cheek swabs and hair clippings from Manning to create DNA-derived sculptural portraits. The work illustrates a multitude of ways in which DNA can be interpreted.

Open Source Mac – Free Mac software, all open-source, all …

Free and open-source software is good for you and good for the world. This is the best free Mac software that we know of.

Open Source Mac is a simple list of the best free and open source software for Mac OS X. We aren't trying to be a comprehensive listing of every open-source mac app, instead we want to showcase the best, most important, and easiest to use. This page should be a handy reference and a useful tool for getting more people to start using free and open-source software. If you think we're missing any great apps, please let us know. Open Source Mac is of course hosted on Linux.

Note to software creators: first of all, thanks so much for making free, open-source software-- we love you.

Second, if we linked to macupdate or versiontracker as the download page, it's because we think your download page is too confusing for new users. It's usually very easy to improve-- just add a big 'Download Now' link towards the top of the page, without too much clutter around it (use mozilla.org or adiumx.com or bittorrent.com for inspiration).

Here's some more unsolicited advice for getting more people to download your software:

a. if you have a nice icon, show it off prominently.

b. put a download link and a screenshot on your front page.

c. if you use mirrors, use a script to pick a random mirror and just give people one link that says 'download now'

d. if there's any way you can avoid sending people to the sourceforge download mirror page, you should (we know it's not your fault, but it baffles lots of folks).

e. if you really want to make things easy for people, and you have a cross-platform app, detect what OS they are on and give them the correct link.

f. test your page on a novice! See if they can understand what the software does and how to get it.

Another said: Look for something big on January 4th, 10th, and 20th.

A lot of us now believe Julian isn't at the embassy any more. We believe he's working with Trump.

Another asked: Is Julian on a plane headed to the US?? Im ready for him to let the truth be known!!

Quoting the lyrics to Paper Planes by MIA another user added: I got more records than the KGB. Meaning he's got many more records in his possession.

It comes after the US Navy bizarrely tweeted Julian Assange from its official profile on Christmas Day to complete the series of oddities.

The navys account later tried to clear up any confusion, writing: This morning, an inadvertent keystroke by an authorised user of the US Navy Office of Information's Digitial Media Engagement Team caused the trending term Julian Assange to be tweeted from the Navy's official Twitter account (@USNavy).

The controversial figures account, @JulianAssange, mysteriously disappeared between 12-1am on Christmas morning.

Mr Assanges last tweet was on December 22, leaving no hint as to why the account may have been removed.

People trying to access Assanges Twitter account were directed to an 'error message' page before it reappeared later in the day.

It was then on New Years Day that Mr Assange appeared to return to Twitter, sparking fears he had died and the code was a dead mans switch.
