Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Prashant Bhushan on Tuesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi are spreading false propaganda about the development in Gujarat, and added that the recent WikiLeaks clarification on Modi proves this point.

"This shows that Modi and the BJP are indulging in false propaganda. The case shows clearly how the BJP and Modi are spreading lies about the Gujarat," said Bhushan on WikiLeaks clarification that it's U.S. diplomatic cables released in 2011 never called Modi 'incorruptible'.

"Unfortunately, all of this was not challenged till now. Since Arvind Kejriwal visited Gujarat and saw the reality, it has been challenged. This is their old trick of spreading rumors. This is not surprising at all," Bhushan added.

WikiLeaks on its website, on Sunday, through its tweets, rubbished BJP's claims of quoting Modi as the 'lone honest Indian politician' and tweeted that it had only named a Congress leader Manoharsinh Jadeja in the diplomatic cable in 2011.

As per reports, BJP supporters had been circulating posters saying that WikiLeaks had endorsed Modi's honesty.

WikiLeaks had tweeted, 'No WikiLeaks document say Modi is 'incorruptible', rather he is popular because 'viewed' as 'incorruptible".

The site added that BJP supporters were spreading fake propaganda about WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, backing Modi's honesty.

In a series of tweets, the whistleblower website disclosed a secret cable by a senior US diplomat eight years ago that described Modi as a distrustful person who reigns more by fear and intimidation.

The website tweeted details of a number of observations made by the then Mumbai-based Consul General Michael S Owen on Modis leadership in a cable after his visit to the state in 2006.

Its clarification came against the backdrop of some BJP supporters circulating posters in Ahmedabad quoting Assange, saying that "America is scared of Modi because he is incorruptible."

BJP, however, downplayed the WikiLeaks tweets. "We don't need a certificate from WikiLeaks or Assange on Modiji," BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi had said.

Even as Wikileak's recent denial of any endorsement of Narendra Modi takes the internet by maelstrom, BJP leaders queue up to say that we never actually said that, and blame AAP and Congress for maligning campaign against their supreme leader.

So here's what happened; Wikileaks, an organisation run by information 'hactivist' Julian Assange, earlier today, put out a tweet from their official account denying that they ever endorsed BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

In fact, they shared a link which elaborates on what Wikileaks does actually say about, and not all of it is very flattering:

Why did they need to do that? Well, for the past few months, certain online memes, such as the ones below, are being shared across social media which allegedly show Assange quoting an endorsement of Modi.

BJP members were, of course, fast to react to Wikileak's tweet, stating either that the claim was never made by them, or that they don't really need Assange's endorsement:

And Arvind Kejriwal, too, didn't waste the opportunity to say 'I told you so'.

And that is not to say that Modi and BJP supporters did not take this unendorsement very gently.

A Reddit user has taken upon himself to prove this was actually a parody gone too far for the sake of tarnishing the good name of the leader. In his very comprehensive post, he explains how this was first shared by a parody news website.

In reality though, a small internet search into the matter will reveal that the BJP did in fact, mistakenly or otherwise, take a certain cable release by the Wikileaks as a sign of endorsement. Through news reports, dating as far back as March, 2011, and even Modi's own blog receives this cable as a positive sign. Modi states that he is glad that America admits Modi is incorruptible. Here he is referring to a leaked cable sent by Consul General Michael S Owen to the US government.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said, "Narendra Modi does not need a certificate from anyone. People know he has been a true chief minister in Gujarat and he will serve the people of the country truthfully when he becomes the Prime Minister."

The BJP PM candidates' supporters have been circulating posters which quote Assange as saying America is scared of Modi because he is incorruptible. WikiLeaks has said that they merely called the BJP's PM nomiee popular and perceived by Indians as incorruptible.

Instead WikiLeaks said that the "incorruptable" quote comes from Rajkot Congress party leader Manoharsinh Jadeja.

"Modi's accomplishments are undeniable," and admitted that the Congress would make little headway against the BJP in Gujarat anytime soon. Modi is extremely popular, Jadeja said, and even Muslims are now supporting him to some extent because he is viewed as someone who is completely incorruptible and can deliver the goods. Consul General asked if Modi could become a national BJP leader, and Jadeja said he hoped so because as long," Jadeja had written.
