Here’s What’s In the Latest IBM i Technology Refreshes – IT Jungle

As expected, IBM today officially unveiled its spring Technology Refreshes for IBM i. Among the goodies that will become available for IBM i 7.4 TR2 or IBM i 7.3 TR8 (or both) are enhancements to Db2 Mirror, a new approach to tape library virtualization, improvements to open source, and new features and functionality around Db2, RPG, RDi, and security, too.

Months ago, IBM execs circled April 14 on their calendars as the day for the big IBM 7.4 TR2 and IBM i 7.3 TR8 reveal, with the idea that the following weeks POWERUp conference in Atlanta, Georgia (now canceled) would provide an excellent venue for the IBM i experts from the Rochester and Toronto labs to educate the IBM i community on the content of the announcements.

Obviously, the novel coronavirus had other plans. Despite COVID-19 locking up most Americans (and much of the rest of the globe) in their homes on an indefinite staycation, IBM is doing its best to stick to its regular schedule for IBM i announcements, which is a commendable thing to do, if only for the temporary sense of normalcy it provides.

IBM i Chief Architect Steve Will and IBMs Product offering Manager Alison Butterill briefed IT Jungle last week on the news. Will, by the way, is hosting a webcast on the COMMON website about the new TRs, with IBM executive Steve Sibley today at 10 a.m. Central Time.

Support for internal disk in Db2 Mirror leads the pack of enhancements for IBM 7.4 TR2 (Db2 Mirror is not available for IBM i 7.3). When Db2 Mirror was unveiled in 2019, it was restricted to IBM i shops that used storage area networks (SANs) to store their data. The interest in Db2 Mirror was greater than IBM had anticipated among small and medium-sized shops, which typically do not have SANs. So IBM did the work to broaden the storage support with Db2 Mirror for 7.4 TR2. Well have more in-depth coverage of this feature in a future issue of The Four Hundred.

Another interesting piece of storage news is a new virtualized method for connecting multiple partitions to a single tape library. IBM i shops could get this by adopting the Virtual Input Output Server (VIOS). But VIOS isnt the most popular technology among smaller IBM i shops (to put it kindly), so IBM once again took the initiative to remedy that situation with a more native approach that leverages whats effectively a new tape library driver. Stay tuned for more on that.

The new TRs bring multiple enhancements on the security front, particularly for IBM i 7.3 TR8. Specifically, IBM i 7.3 TR8 gets support for TLS version 1.3, which previously was only supported on IBM i 7.4. The new digital certificate manager interface that had previously been available only on IBM i 7.4 also is now available on IBM i 7.3 TR8.

Usually were talking about things we put in 7.4 and 7.3 at the same time, but this is a pretty big deal for the security administrator on the platform, Will said. As soon as our clients started seeing the new 7.4 interface, they said This is so much easier. Please target back to 7.3 as well. We found that that wasnt going to be that much effort. And in fact, that made life so much easier for the folks who are doing that management.

Rational Developer for i (RDi), while not part of the IBM i operating system, traditionally gets updated around the same time as the TRs come out. In this case, RDi version 9.6.0.7 will deliver a new capability to create stored procedures by simply highlighting a segment of RPG code and clicking a few buttons. IBM is also adding new real-time SQL validation and formatting assistance, as well as new parameters for setting breakpoints during debugging.

RPG gains several new functions, according to Butterill, including a built-in function for obtaining a unique value for a timestamp. Programmers can also gain a new way to access the number of keys in a keyed data structure, she says. Finally, enhancements have also been made to qualified names in the Like DS keyword.

On the open source front, IBM is delivering a new technique for IBM i shops to tap into open source updates on RPM without exposing the IBM i server to the Internet. RPM, of course, is the new software distribution method that replaces the old 5733-OPS and has become the only way to get tools like Python, Git, Node.js, and other open source software that runs on IBM i. According to Will, the method leverages tunneling technology that allows users to pass open source updates from RPM to the IBM i server by way of another client that is connected to the network.

Db2 also gets several new enhancements, services, and built-in functions with IBM 7.4 TR2 and IBM i 7.3 TR8. This includes the INTERPRET built-in function that transforms data from IBM i internal data types, as well as new COMPARE_FILE tool that compares files object attributes and data (or both) for files on a single IBM i server or against a remote database (works with IBM i 7.4 only).

For several years now, IBM has been adding SQL services to the Db2 for i database that function as alternatives to traditional APIs and CL commands. IBM continues that tradition with the addition of several new SQL services, including the IFS_OBJECT_PRIVILEGES function, which functions similar to the OBJECT_PROVILEGES function for the database. In fact, Will counted them up and determined there are, in fact, 28 new SQL services in this release, he says.

Last but not least are enhancements to Db2 Web Query, the business intelligence and analytics tool offered by IBM. IBM has updated the EZ-Install Package, which is designed to simplify the products installation for first-time users and also function as a demonstration unit for business partners. This release also includes a new report auto-generation feature.

Most of the enhancements in with IBM 7.4 TR2 and IBM i 7.3 TR8 are set to become available on May 15, although some will not be available until June. Stay tuned to future issues of The Four Hundred for details on the latest TRs.

Oregon Tech students, faculty use spring break to produce PPE – Herald and News

Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech) mechanical engineering students Davia Fleming and Jacob Allemann were not spending their spring break taking a breather. Instead, they were improving safety for healthcare providers by using 3D print technology to create protective shields for frontline medical workers.

With some help from faculty members, thus far 40 face shields have been made, with another 90 in production. The students are also making valves through a 3D printing process that will be able to adapt/convert CPAP/BiPAP machines commonly used to treat sleep apnea into ventilators.

Were an engineering school, so I thought that theres got to be something that we can do to help, Davia said, a senior at Oregon Techs Portland-Metro campus in Wilsonville. I went online and researched what there were shortages of and found some Open Source software for making face shield visors using 3D printers.

With fellow Oregon Tech student Jacob Allemann, also a senior, Davia had two of the campus 3D printers from the prototype lab delivered to her home since she couldnt work on campus due to the stay-at-home directive.

At first using her personal supply of printer materials, Davia and Jacob got busy taking shifts to continuously print the visor component of the face shields.

Aided by faculty members Dr. Mike Myers in Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Chitra Venugopal in renewable energy engineering and Dr. Greg Pak in natural sciences, the students have produced about 40 visors so far and are working with Dr. Venugopal and staff lab technician and electrical engineering student Richard Ellis to laser cut the acetate shields for attachment to the visors; the first shipment will go out this week.

The team is also preparing 3D printed ventilator adapters. The students and faculty estimate that another 70 will be done by next week. Once the first shipment goes out, the production team will focus on digital manufacturing of ventilator adaptors/converters and their distribution to the local healthcare community.

Earlier this week Oregon Tech was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Ford Family Foundation in Roseburg, Oregon. The foundation made emergency funds available to support rapid response efforts to alleviate the hardships many rural families and organizations are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic so that the project could continue with its production and distribution of the PPE and the conversion of CPAP/BiPAP machines into ventilators.

In all, the student/faculty team are manufacturing respirator masks with changeable filters, printing 3D face shields, and converting CPAP/BiPAP machines into ventilators using resin printed valves and Arduino an open source electronic prototyping platform.

All Oregon Tech faculty had to quickly transition to all-remote teaching and learning in spring term, but still took time out of their hectic schedules to support this student-driven project.

HP in Vancouver, Wash. has also been helping with the project, donating their shield components to Oregon Tech through a connection of Dr. Paks. Oregon Tech then completes the final assembly, distribution and donation logistics.

Dr. Pak, who teaches at Oregon Techs Portland-Metro Campus in areas such as anatomy and physiology and immunology said, When COVID-19 broke loose across the state, Davia immediately deployed her expertise and inventiveness rather than taking a break after finals. She didnt let the virus and the need to stay at home stop her, but instead reached out to get 3D printers delivered to her house by faculty. Davias and Jacobs enthusiasm is an energy force that knows no barriers. They are the type of Oregon Tech students whose inventiveness is boundless, especially when there is real human need.

Dr. Pak has been reaching out to regional hospitals and clinics including Salem Hospital to help support their need of the PPE demand to protect their doctors, nurses and other medical staff. The team is also sending some of the shields to Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls, where the universitys main campus is located, right across the street from the hospital.

Oregon Tech also recently lent Sky Lakes several ventilators from its respiratory care bachelors degree program in order to help it meet growing demand as positive cases increase in Klamath County. Director of Laboratory Services at Sky Lakes Medical Center, Meredith Case, who is an alumna of Oregon Tech, requested face shields from Oregon Tech. Dr. Meredith is one of our Medical Lab Science graduates, and it truly means a lot for us to extend our commitment to an Owl, and to our already close partner, Sky Lakes, said Pak.

Oregon Tech will also be providing its finished products to Salem and Portland donation centers, which have been set up by the state and are accepting PPE donations for many healthcare professionals and agencies. These facilities handle the screening process so that the PPE meets medical standards.

Besides the PPE project, Davia is also project lead of Oregon Techs RockSat-C project at the Portland-Metro campus. She and her student colleagues spent much of the 2019-2020 academic year working on a sophisticated payload that will be launched by NASA in June at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The Oregon Tech payload research project was one of only seven in the nation accepted to provide a payload on the rocket.

TCN stands for Temporary Contact Number. It is the core of the TCN protocol. A completely anonymous number is created to record private transactions between compatible mobile devices without allowing them to be tracked.

The execution requires that all major technology companies, app developers, and governments to be able to implement apps which are compatible with the shared protocol from TCN.

Anonymity is very important to the user, while we live in a world where we use open source software projects, large scale distributed networks and end user products. An interesting write up stated that sometimes we land up over prescribing technical solutions. We need to know the trade off and the nuances in the whole process to avoid the process of sacrificing privacy.

A wide range of things like arbitrary behavior should be avoided apart from privacy concerns. Safely using anonymity tools is also the need of the hour. We need to keep track of how the privacy-preserving contact tracing methods help keep the virus at bay without having to lose privacy. As we previously stated, this should not jeopardize post pandemic privacy.

Anyone’s a Celebrity Streamer With This Open Source App – WIRED

Live streaming is booming. People spent 1.2 billion hours watching Twitch in the first quarter of 2020, according to analytics company StreamHatchet and streaming software company Streamlabs. Time spent viewing the live-streaming service, a unit of Amazon, jumped 23 percent from February to March, and the number of unique Twitch channels increased 33 percent over the previous quarter. Other live streaming platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Microsoft's Mixer also saw more use.

It's not just video games. People host live cooking shows. Musicians are live streaming concerts. Programmers use Twitch streams as a way to swap tips.

"I think it's a great time to try streaming," says Justin Turner, a digital marketer in Portland, Oregon, who just started a new live streaming talk show about Dungeons and Dragons and other tabletop games. "It's a great way to interact with people. Just knowing some of my friends are watching and chatting really helps with social distancing."

Like many other streamers, Turner uses a video streaming and recording application called Open Broadcaster Software Studio, which unlike commercial options like Camtasia, is free and open source.

Twitch offers its own free streaming software thats easier for beginners, but OBS Studio users say they prefer the app for its advanced features and how much it can be customized. "It's still relatively easy to use but there's a lot of tinkering you can do if you're into that sort of thing," says Turner.

The app is also useful for people who don't live stream. Bastian Bechtold teaches computer science at Jade University in Germany, and like many teachers around the world, is producing video lessons for his students. He turned to OBS Studio to record lessons because the app makes it easy to hide and unhide parts of his screen, which enables him to show students a problem and then unveil the solution without doing any video editing, saving time. "I came into this not knowing what was possible, and OBS works really well," he says. "Even a complex setup was fairly straightforward to create."

OBS Studio creator Hugh "Jim" Bailey estimates that the software is probably used by tens of millions of people, based on the number who download updates. The pandemic has likely doubled interest in the tool, Bailey says, with about 320,000 unique visitors a day now coming to the OBS Studio website. That's not counting variants of OBS Studio like Streamlabs OBS, which is based on the original project's code but developed separately. Streaming platforms Twitch, Facebook, and YouTube include links to OBS Studio in their resources for live streamers.

Bailey created OBS Studio in 2012 after years trying to break into the video game development industry to no avail. "It didn't work out," he says. "The industry is way too competitive and brutal. I was 30 years old and living with my father, and needed to try something new."

Bailey was a fan of Starcraft and loved watching people play the game on Twitch. He wanted to start his own Starcraft live stream, but couldn't find any free and open source live streaming tools. "I was the sort of person who would build his own tools just for fun," he says. "I thought it was a cool opportunity to do open source for the first time because I really loved open source software."

Bailey developed a prototype of OBS Studio and posted it to Reddit and a Starcraft forum. Soon other programmers were pitching in to help develop the software.

While open source has become the de facto software development methodology for most organisations today, businesses should ensure that doing so will not compromise their ability to meet regulatory requirements.

Thats the warning from Akesh Lalla, country manager of business analytics company SAS, who acknowledges that the embrace of open source is a business imperative for most businesses, particularly those that want to remain agile and responsive. As a result, an increasing number of analytical models were being developed in open source.

However, developing the software is only part of the equation. A possibly greater challenge lies in taking that software into production, particularly in an increasingly stringent regulatory environment. South Africa is no exception to this, where, according to Lalla, the regulatory environment especially in the financial sector is becoming tighter and more challenging.

Its important to be able to see right through your entire data lineage, to know how the data has changed and how AI inside the model has impacted the results and outputs. When the regulator asks those questions, organisations must be in a position to answer; regulators expect companies to provide the appropriate levels of traceability and auditability, he says.

Lalla maintains that open source software development does not always enable this level of transparency, accountability, governance and, ultimately, trust.

People entrust organisations with their data. It is therefore essential that the organisation has mechanisms in place to meet these expectations. In addition, they have to develop and maintain an internal organisational moral compass for protecting the agreed upon use of the data.

A hybrid approach of combining both open source and proprietary software is the most effective way to combine rapid development with deployment at scale, and reliability in model management.

Controls are also necessary to provide trust in the data. Businesses have to trust that the results of models are accurate and that those models will continue to perform into the future. Transparency, governance and security are all essential components, and they become even more critical when organisations scale their efforts, he adds.

All this, he explains, can be summed up in what SAS refers to as digital guardianship.

Given the potential frailty of open source in the area of digital guardianship, Lalla believs that a hybrid approach of combining both open source and proprietary software is the most effective way to combine rapid development with deployment at scale, and reliability in model management.

Microsoft is making it a lot easier to access Linux files in Windows 10 – PC Gamer

Contrary to what some people might think, Windows 10 and Linux are not sworn enemies. Sure, there is a big difference between proprietary and open source software, but for people who run both operating systems, Microsoft is adding a neat feature to Windows 10Linux file integration into File Explorer (see image above).

Microsoft is essentially building on its plan to jam a full Linux kernel in Windows 10, as it previously announced. Users have been able to access Linux files in Explorer since the May 2019 update (Windows 10 version 1903), but the feature being tested right now adds a Linux icon (Tux) in the left-hand navigation pane of Explorer if you have Windows Subsytem for Linux, or WSL, installed.

It's a subtle change, and also a welcome one. Previously, users would have to open up their Linux distro, make sure the current folder was in their Linux home directory, then type 'explorer.exe' to open a File Explorer window containing their Linux files.

In this new implementation, clicking on the Linux icon will bring up a view of the available Linux distros. When you click on one, it will place you in the Linux root file system for that particular distro. Easy-cheesy.

Microsoft rolled out the feature to its newest preview build (19603) for Windows Insiders who are subscribed to the Fast ring. Assuming all goes well, this should end up in the next big update to Windows 10 (20H1).

It's not clear when 20H1 will roll out, other than sometime in the first half of the year, barring a delay. Microsoft has committed to releasing two major feature updates to Windows 10 each year, in addition to the cumulative security updates that arrive on Patch Tuesdaythe second Tuesday of every month.

In addition to better Linux integration, the 20H1 release is expected to add support for third-party widgets to the Windows 10 Game Bar, starting with ones from Intel, Razer, and XSplit.

The secret ingredient to more secure code is out and its simple: happiness.

Thats according to a sweeping annual survey of over 5,000 developers, which found that they are triple as likely to spot security issues if happy at work.

The finding might seem faintly ludicrous: most businesses nowadays aspire, superficially or otherwise, to creating a positive working environment and those that fail should hardly expect insecure code as the inevitable outcome.

(It is extremely likely, of course, that happiness is an outcome of other factors that are in themselves greater contributors to more considered code reviews/QA: adequately staffed teams, less pressure to ship code at an unreasonable pace..)

But with developers shipping code ever faster under pressure from business leaders to iterate and innovate at pace and the same survey showing that 28 percent of mature organisations have suffered an open source breach in past 12 months, business leaders may want to ask themselves how they can make their developers happier.

Open source software security specialist Sonatypes seventh annual DevSecOps community survey which reached devs in UK, USA, India, Canada and the EU is not all full of guidance on creating a merry bed of roses for developers however.

With software supply chain security firmly in the spotlight, following a string of security incidents, many businesses are looking closely at how to shore up the integrity of the code amid increasingly rapid development cycles. (The report found that 55 percent are deploying code to production at least weekly, up from 47 percent in 2019).

The security or otherwise of application code and beneath it/baked into it, open source code components is vital: hundreds of thousands of open source software packages are in production applications throughout the supply chain; many rife with issues ranging from outdated versions; understaffed projects; and existence of known security flaws.

Sonatype found that happy developers those that feel secure in their job, have access to training and are being given the right tools are 65 percent more likely to conduct rigours code checks.Dennis Orner, Software Engineer, TWT Digital Health commented in the survey that: Security falls short when things get shipped under pressure. This is not the case as often when security is part of the process.

When asked what caused the most friction in an organisation members of mature DevOps teams reported no friction, while others cited immature practices and management as key causes of disruption.

Derek Weeks, Vice President at Sonatype commented that: Developer happiness based on mature DevOps practices is fundamental to the quality and delivery of secure software. By introducing mature DevOps practices, businesses can not only innovate faster, they can enhance their development teams job satisfaction, and ultimately differentiate themselves as employers critical when so many companies face significant skills shortages and increased competition.

Nearly one in five (24 percent) queried reported that they have suspected or have verified a breach within the last 12 months.

Breaches caused by the integration of open source components has dropped slightly to 21 percent following a sharp rise two years ago around the time of the Equifax breach, which they blamed on an open source framework.

Established DevOps security teams are 69 percent more likely to follow an open source governance policy. These governance policies sit as a guiding framework for security teams and layout step by step how organisations approach and handle the array of open source components it needs to operate. A key move for teams following a good governance policy is the implementation of software composition analysis tools.

However, only 45 percent of those operating mature DevOps practices say they keep a full software bill of materials for open source components that is used in their applications.
