Microsoft to developers: These are our biggest and best open-source projects – ZDNet

Microsoft, under CEO Satya Nadella, has said and done a lot to shed its image as a pariah of Linux and open-source software communities.

With a Linux kernel for Windows 10, GitHub, a new Android Surface Duo, and the commercial cloud as its main source of revenue, Microsoft is a very different company than it was 30 years ago when it was afraid open-source software would gobble up its intellectual property and revenues.

Nowadays, it's got a growing number of open-source projects, including its hugely popular cross-platform code editor Visual Studio Code (VS Code), .NET Core, the hit JavaScript-based programming language TypeScript, and new open-source Windows developer tools like PowerToys and Windows Terminal.

Microsoft has now launched a website of course built on open-source technologies to showcase how it's embracing open source to "bring choice, technology and community to our customers".

According to the company, over 35,000 engineers at the company are using GitHub Enterprise Cloud to host and release official Microsoft open-source projects, samples, and documentation.

The site also details the influence the One Engineering System (1ES) team has on the Microsoft open-source program. 1ES, a team of around 200 people, aims to improve Microsoft's own engineering processes and then bring these tools and processes to customers, such as the Git Virtual File System (GVFS).

Jeff Wilcox, a software engineer with the Microsoft Open Source Programs Office, announced the new site today. He notes that it is "built by the Ruby open-source project Jekyll (that also powers GitHub Pages)".

Wilcox reckons the site provides "a near real-time view of things happening across our projects on GitHub".

It's of course hosted in the Azure cloud and makes use Microsoft's own Azure Front Door service for managing containers in the Azure Kubernetes Services, as well as TypeScript and Node.js.

Among the main open-source projects from Microsoft include Windows Terminal, VS Code, .NET MAUI, the Windows Calculator, TypeScript, the Cascadia Code font, the Windows package manager Winget, PowerShell, and the source code for the Linux kernel used in Windows Subsystem for Linux 2.

The site also highlights Microsoft's Free and Open Source Software Fund (FOSS Fund), which allows Microsoft employees to "collectively select open-source projects to receive $10,000 sponsorship awards throughout the year."

"Microsoft's engineers select projects they are super passionate about. Only employees who contribute to open-source projects can participate in the selection process," Microsoft states.

Last week, Google showed off its contributions to open-source software, revealing that around 12,500 Google employees contribute to public code repositories.

In 2019 Google employees created over 570,000 issues, opened over 150,000 pull requests, and created more than 36,000 push events on GitHub.

Microsoft argued at the time it acquired GitHub in 2018 that it was the most active organization on the hosting and development service because its employees had made two million commits, or updates, to open-source projects in a year.

Some believe that open source as a community is dying and the layoffs at Mozilla bode ill for the open web – Explica

The mower that is 2020 continues to take things ahead. A couple of days ago Mozilla Corporation announced the layoff of 250 employees citing the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on your income.

It is another hard blow for the company that already in January had laid off 70 employees due to lack of income. With this measure basically projects significant enough for the developer community have been removed or lost, and the future of Firefox looks increasingly dark for the browser that represents almost the only light that keeps the web open.

The layoffs at Mozilla affect teams that worked on Firefox Devtools, Servo, MDN, WebXR, Firefox Reality, and / or DevRel. Servo is the rendering engine that Mozilla started building from scratch several years ago and for which the Rust programming language was created. MDN is a learning platform for the technologies and software that the web works with, and a huge resource for developers.

These layoffs have basically killed those projects, and Mozilla will shift to focus on creating new commercial products in order to mitigate the damage and generate new sources of income. Examples of this are your VPN, Pocket, or Hubs.

And is that even before the coronavirus crisis, Mozilla was already suffering, the first layoffs came because they underestimated the time it would take them to create these new income-generating products, and worst of all is that we are talking about an organization whose main source of income is a direct competitor which is basically taking over the web: Google.

Mozilla needs to focus on commercial products that generate income and this leaves many open source projects that benefited the development of the open web orphans

Agreements with search engines (Yandex in Russia, Baidu in China, Google in the rest of the world) to be included as search engines in Firefox represent more than 90% of Mozillas revenue. But Firefox keeps losing users and market share and it is not difficult to ask How much longer can Mozilla survive like this?

The only hope for Mozilla is to become something like the antithesis of what it originally was: a corporation more focused mainly on commercial projects that generate profits and not on the open source community and the open web, because they have something to eat.

If Mozilla lost the proceeds from its Google deal it would go straight to the graveyard. And this is just another taste of the almost absolute control over the web that large corporations have.

For many, cases like Mozillas are simply another example of how open source as a community is falling apart. The open source of this era is one that is too intertwined with the business strategies of large corporations.

Linux is an exampleAs Lunduke himself commented in his annual Linux Sucks 2020 talk, he is not the only one who believes that the Linux community has become a committee controlled by corporations. The Linux Foundation lives off the contributions of giants like Google, Microsoft, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Oracle, Sony, VMWare, Uber, etc., and has to please everyone to pay Linus Torvalds salary.

Not long ago these same corporations announced their new great initiative: OpenSSF, a project within the Linux Foundation to foster open source software security and accelerate cross-industry collaboration. Between industries, not between the community or the people.

Today Open Source is more about corporate business strategies than independent communities collaborating with each other

Google controls the development of Chromium, an open source project that already brings all other popular alternative browsers to life that are not Firefox, if Firefox dies what else is left?

The same Microsoft that once hated open source, each day claims to love open source more, and it shows. They already own GitHub, and recently own npm too, a move that basically makes them control the entire workbench of thousands of JavaScript developers, the most widely used programming language by programmers in the world.

The Mozilla that many of us knew seems to be slowly and painfully disappearing. Its most iconic and important product is hanging by a thread, and with Firefox in jeopardy, the open web suffers too. We are increasingly heading towards a world where we all access the web from the same engine created by a megacorporation that has been governing standards for a long time, favoring its products and limiting competition.

IBM Z mainframes revived by Red Hat, AI and security – TechTarget

Mainframe systems could play a significant role in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence advancements in years to come and IBM is investing in those areas to ensure system Z mainframes have a stake in those growing tech markets.

IBM mainframe sales grew some 69% during the second quarter of this year, achieving the highest year-over-year percentage increase of any other business unit. Some industry observers attribute the unexpected performance to the fact the z15, introduced a year ago, is still in its anticipated upcycle. Typically, mainframe sales level off and dip after 12 to 18 months until the release of a new system. But that might not be the case this time around.

Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM's Z and LinuxOne mainframe business, discussed some of the factors that could contribute to sustained growth of the venerable system, including IBM's acquisition of Red Hat, the rise of open source software and timely technical enhancements.

Mainframe revenues in the second quarter were the fastest-growing of any IBM business unit, something analysts didn't expect to see again. Is this just the typical upcycle for the latest system or something else at work?

Ross Mauri: A lot of it has to do with the Red Hat acquisition and the move toward hybrid clouds. Consequently, mainframes are picking up new workloads, which is why you are seeing a lot more MIPS being generated. We set a record for MIPS in last year's fourth quarter.

How much of it has to do with the increase in Linux-based mainframes and the growing popularity of open source software?

Mauri: Yes, there is that plus all the more strategic applications [OpenShift, Ansible] going to the cloud. What also helped was our Capacity On Demand program going live in the second quarter, providing users with four times the [processor] capacity they had a year ago.

Some industries are in slumps, but online sales are up and that means credit card and banking systems are more active than normal. They liked the idea of being able to turn on 'dark' processors remotely.

Some analysts think mainframes are facing the same barrier Intel-based machines are with Moore's Law. Are you running out of real estate on mainframe chips to improve performance?

Mauri: What we have done is made improvements in the instruction set. So, with things like Watson machine learning, users can work to a pretty high level of AI, taking greater advantage of the hardware. We've not run out of real estate on the chips, or out of performance, and I don't think we will. If you think that, we will prove you wrong.

But with the last couple of mainframe releases performance improvements were in the single digits, compared to 30% to 40% performance improvements of Power systems.

Mauri: In terms of Z [series mainframes], they are running as fast as Power. We know where [mainframes] are going to be running in the future. As we move to deep learning inference engines in the future, you'll see more AI running on the system to help with fraud analytics and real-time transactions. We haven't played out our whole hand yet. The AI market is still nascent; we are very much at the beginning of it. For instance, we're not anywhere near what we can do with the security of the system.

As we move to deep learning inference engines in the future, you'll see more AI running on [mainframes] to help with fraud analytics and real-time transactions. We haven't played out our whole hand yet. Ross MauriGeneral manager, IBM's Z and LinuxOne mainframes

We have started to put quantum encryption algorithms in the system already, to make sure security was sound given what's going on in the world of cybersecurity. You'll see us continue to invest more in the future when it comes to AI. We'll build on that machine learning base we have already.

Is IBM Research investigating other technologies that would sit between existing mainframes and quantum computers in terms of improving performance?

Mauri: Our [mainframe] systems group is working closely with the quantum team as well as with IBM Research. We are still in the research phase; no one's using them for production.

What we're exploring with IBM Research and clients is trying to determine what algorithms run well on a quantum computer for solving business problems and business processes that now run on mainframes. For instance, we're looking at big financial institutions where we can make use of quantum computers as closely coupled accelerators for the mainframe. We think it can greatly reduce costs and improve business processing speed. It's actually not that complex to do. We're doing active experiments with clients now.

What are you looking at to increase performance?

Mauri: We are looking at a whole range of options right now. We have something we do with clients called Enterprise Design Thinking where they are involved throughout an entire process to make sure we're not putting some technology in that's not going to work for them. We have been doing that since the z14 [mainframe].

Microsoft breaks ranks with its own service mesh – TechCentral.ie

As controversy rages over the governance of Google's Istio service mesh, Microsoft has seen an opportunity to offer a simple and truly open alternative

Read More: Microsoft

Microsoft has announced that it will release its own open source service mesh called Open Service Mesh (OSM) and transfer it to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as soon as possible.

This sets the Redmond-based company apart from its cloud rival Google, which recently announced that its own Istio service mesh will no longer be part of the vendor-neutral CNCF and will instead sit under Googles own Open Usage Commons foundation.

The service mesh has quickly become a vital part of the modern cloud native computing stack, as it essentially enables communication, monitoring, and load balancing between disparate parts of todays microservices-based architecture.

This differs from the popular container orchestration service Kubernetes in its level of granularity. When run in tandem with Kubernetes, a service mesh enables deeper security policy and encryption enforcement and automated load balancing and circuit breaking functionality.

Where Microsoft is looking to set itself apart aside from the philosophical debate over open source software and governance issues is in offering as much simplicity as possible.

What our customers have been telling us is that solutions that are out there today, Istio being a good example, are extremely complex, Microsoft director of product management for Azure Compute and CNCF board member Gabe Monroy told TechCrunch.

Its not just me saying this. We see the data in the [Azure Kubernetes Service] support queue of customers who are trying to use this stuff and theyre struggling right here. This is just hard technology to use hard technology to build at scale, he added.

Until now Microsoft had set itself out as a neutral party in the service mesh battle, offering Azure customers a Service Mesh Interface that supported various options, including popular open source options such as Istio, Linkerd and Consul, as well as Amazon Web Services own App Mesh.

Now, according to Microsoft, OSM is intended to be as lightweight an option as possible. It runs on Kubernetes, and the data plane element is based on the popular Envoy proxy, all configured with service mesh interface APIs. Long story short? OSM injects an Envoy proxy as a sidecar container next to each instance of an application, the vendor states.

With this launch Microsoft is not only aligning itself with the open governance side of the debate which has been raging through the open source software community for the past few months, but is also looking to solve a customer pain point.

Not everybody sees it as such a slam dunk however, with Oliver Gould, the co-founder of Linkerd creator Buoyant, taking to Twitter to highlight similarities between the Linkerd and OSM user experiences in the aftermath of the launch.

How The Chinese Open Source Ecosystem Is Thriving And Advancing AI – Analytics India Magazine

As a creative and collaborative model, open-source is not only limited to the development of software technology, but also includes hardware design, microprocessor instructions, set architecture, specifications, data models, protocols, standards, and other technologies that the public can collaboratively create in an open mode. Open-source collaboration brings developers all over the world together to share the results with everyone.

In the software era, open-source has promoted the harbour of innovative technological achievements on a global scale. With the advent of the AI era, large companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are continuing to open source to the end.

In a country as large as China, open-source technology is rapidly expanding and companies such as Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu are leading the race. To keep up with the global competition, China is carving its own strategy in open source so that it does not have to rely fully on the Western tech companies for collaborative innovation in AI and other technologies.

The development of artificial intelligence in China is a systematic arrangement planned by the state. The New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan released in July 2017 pointed out that there are four principles for promoting artificial intelligence technology leadership, system layout, market leadership, and open source. One of the routes is to jointly build a systematic AI technology system under the principle of open source and openness.

In China, enterprises acceptance of open source technology has also increased year by year. Data shows that a large number of enterprises express their approval of open source technology. Companies like BAT, Baidu, Huawei, Didi and other well-known companies are now relying on open source.

In 2019, domestic open-source projects saw a drastic rise in China, for instance, Baidu open-sourced Chinas only deep learning platform PaddlePaddle that can compete with PyTorch, TensorFlow and other frameworks.

The global AI race has prompted the Chinese science and technology community to hope to meet the technical demands through its own open-source community. The OpenIntelligence OpenI Platform, an open-source platform for community-led by Artificial Intelligence Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance (AITISA), aims to achieve this.

It helps industry, university and researchers to collaborate and build a shared open-source software and hardware super community. The alliance works in accordance with the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Science and Technology in China.

To leverage open source in AI, AITISA began working on a community where major Chinese AI scientists, AI engineers, programmers, and developers regularly discuss the construction and technical practice of AI.

The goal is to bring together the academic, industrial and societal resource within China and from the globe to create the super open source community including open source software, open hardware and open data by organising a series of activities including events, research group, competitions, open-source training courses, to accelerate high-quality content, assembling leading talent, producing core technology breakthrough for the Chinese AI industry.

In December 2019, the OpenI community members held a two-day plenary meeting and special forum called OpenI/O 2019 at Shenzhen University Town, led by renowned Chinese academician Gao Wen, chairman of the OpenI Council. Rao Wen presented a report on adhering to the principle of open source and opening up and building a new generation of artificial intelligence.

According to Gao Wen, he hopes to leverage the hosting platform iHub to build an unthreatened artificial intelligence open-source platform and advance Chinas AI ambitions so that it does not have to rely on global tech firms. Gao Wen spoke at the conference that the incentive system is being established, hoping to be used for technical personnel who support open-source.

Home How The Chinese Open Source Ecosystem Is Thriving And Advancing AI

Huang Tiejun, who is also chairman of the OpenI Technical Committee, further elaborated that he hopes that through the support of resources and projects, OpenI Technical Committee will establish governance system, operating mechanism and technical features of the OpenI Qizhi platform including infrastructure, software environment and algorithm framework.

The main participants involved in the early stage for OpenI platform establishment are Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence; Peking University; Pengcheng laboratory; Chinas National University of Defense Technology; Beihang University; Huawei; Baidu; Alibaba; Tencent; ByteDance; SenseTime DiDi MI and many global companies Iflytek; Microsoft; Intel; Nvidia; etc. They are also building a supercomputing AI framework for Chinas domestic technological needs.

The new generation of artificial intelligence industry technology innovation strategic alliance released the OpenI Qizhi license in March 2018. OpenI Open Source License V1.1 works to guarantee the operation of new generation AI open-source projects and communities with strong legal rules. It can be used in fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory use for AI projects by members around the world.

The open-source license determines how the community uses AI innovation in the future, and whether there are constraints in commercialisation.

Pengcheng Labs and other core units are taking the lead in launching the platform. At present, the largest computing power is provided by Pengcheng Lab. Through the open-source community incentive mechanism, developers can complete new projects on the OpenI platform, and realise the Chinese dream of a generation of artificial intelligence.

With more than 3,200 stars on Github, Infection Monkey is trusted by large enterprises, educational institutions, and more, and has garnered praise from distinguished industry analysts such as Dr. Chase Cunningham, principal analyst at Forrester.

In cyberspace and in cyber warfare exploitation, attacks succeed because they locate and leverage the weak points in systems and networks. In order to defend from this type of attack cycle, it is necessary to continually test the system for those likely weak points. But this can be difficult, especially when dealing with large infrastructures that are bridged between cloud, non-cloud, on premises, off premises, and a wide variety of other potential configurations. Infection Monkey is one of the most well-aligned tools that fits this need. Im a huge fan. from Chase Cunninghams Cyber Warfare Trust, Tactics, and Strategies.

Cybersecurity experts and enterprise DevSecOps teams continue to rely on the MITRE-developed ATT&CK framework as the foundation for network security tests and assessments.

Infection Monkey 1.9.0 now offers a total of 32 MITRE ATT&CK techniques available for testing. These new attack techniques enable cybersecurity professionals to exhaustively test their network like never before while also empowering them to easily communicate steps towards actionable remediation with all relevant stakeholders, from IT to the C-suite.

As the cybersecurity skills gap continues to widen and IT teams find themselves short-staffed, Infection Monkey 1.9.0 received several interface improvements that ensure the tool can be easily implemented and most importantly valuable with no additional staff or education.

Infection Monkeys user interface has been significantly upgraded for configuration, making it easier than ever to set up a variety of different test scenarios on the network. In addition, Infection Monkey 1.9.0 now runs more stealthily to avoid interruptions in attack simulations, and improve coverage rates.

Guardicore is committed to ensuring that Infection Monkey offers the highest standards of quality and safety as a tool. Deployed in enterprise production data centers and cloud deployments, delivering a secure and stable tool is a top priority.

Therefore, Infection Monkey 1.9.0 now requires a secure login by default and has also been verified as secure by Synk.io, a security firm that continuously scans for vulnerabilities in software dependencies. Users can be confident that the tool is safe and secure for deployment.

Our mission with Infection Monkey is to equip cybersecurity professionals with a valuable open source tool that helps improve their security posture against cybercriminals, said Shay Nehmad, Team Lead and Open Source Software Developer, Guardicore. With this new version, we have made it easier than ever to use the tools sophisticated features.

Enhanced efficiency thanks to new family of applications: Digital Mercedes-Benz production ecosystem MO360: global production networked in real time -…

Mercedes-Benz Cars Operations 360 (MO360) makes complex vehicle production completely transparent and maximises its efficiency. The new digital ecosystem comprises a family of software applications which are connected via shared interfaces and standardized user interfaces. These applications use real-time data to support the worldwide vehicle production of Mercedes-Benz Cars. Large parts of MO360 are already in use at more than 30 plants around the world. The networked plants supply data which the MO360 applications can access. Other applications for the digital support of production staff at Mercedes-Benz Cars are set to be integrated into MO360 successively. MO360 combines efficiency and quality tools in a functional unit for maximum transparency in highly digitalised automotive production. The digital ecosystem is being used in full for the first time at the new Factory 56 in Sindelfingen. It will thus serve as a blueprint for all plants throughout the Mercedes-Benz Cars production network.

With MO360, Mercedes-Benz is setting milestones in digital production. The key enablers of the new digital ecosystem are smart data usage, maximum transparency and streamlined processes. This makes the seamless networking of previously separate processes possible and increase efficiency, explains Jrg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG responsible for Production and Supply Chain Management. MO360 enables the automotive manufacturer to make use of cutting-edge big-data analytics and also to implement artificial intelligence methods in production. Thanks to improved processes, comprehensive data availability in our MO360 data lake and fast decisions based on real-time data, we will be able to increase production efficiency by more than 15 percent by 2022. We are ensuring the complete digital support of each member of the production staff, according to Burzer.

MO360 integrates the information from the main production processes and IT systems of the more than 30 Mercedes-Benz passenger car plants worldwide and brings together important software applications. It delivers significantly optimised KPI-based production control, for example. It also makes individual, needs-based information and work instructions available to each employee in real time. One precondition for the transparency of all production processes, equipment monitoring and access in real time is that all elements in the system speak the same language. Mercedes-Benz ensures this by comprehensive, worldwide use of the control software Integra: from sensor level at individual machines right up to production control, and also in its cooperation with all suppliers and system partners. Sophisticated cloud solutions deliver scalability and allow extensive big-data processing. All this makes MO360 the key ecosystem of Mercedes-Benz Cars Operations and therefore also the new benchmark for highly digitalised automotive production.

All in all, MO360 reflects the Mercedes-Benz Cars Operations aspiration to manufacture excellent products based on outstanding production methods. The ecosystem is based on all Mercedes-Benz Cars Operations strategic pillars: driving digitalisation forward, using resources sustainably, delivering the potential to use and expand motivated employees, providing maximum flexibility in the global production network as well as outstanding processes and maximum operating safety.

A key success factor for MO360 lies in the fact that cross-functional teams of production and IT experts develop the ecosystem by agile and iterative collaboration. Organisational boundaries no longer have a role to play, stresses Jan Brecht, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz. All teams systematically utilise continuous feedback from production to optimise and enhance the digital tools. The teams continuously improve the software in short-cycle sprints with the aim of providing MO360 users with lasting perceptible benefits. In this way we are able to achieve regular software release cycles of just two weeks. For software engineering in the field of production, that is an absolute record, explains Brecht.

New standard for highly digitalised automotive production

The importance of MO360 is also shown by the Factory 56 at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant, which will be opened in September 2020. With it, Mercedes-Benz is redefining automotive production. This factory of the future meets all of the criteria for fully digital, flexible and sustainable production. For this, as one of the most modern automotive production facilities in the world, it relies consistently and comprehensively on innovative technologies and processes with Industry 4.0 technologies. High-speed mobile phone networks are also installed in parts of the production hall based on the future-oriented 5G standard, in order to connect processes, machines, plants and devices to each other. MO360 also comprises inch-perfect tracking of all vehicles in the factory halls in real time, so that each application in the ecosystem knows precisely, at any time, where a particular vehicle is located.

In the Factory 56, the employees work in a fully digital manner. As a key component of MO360, the PAPERLESS FACTORY gives each employee precisely the individually tailored information they need to work on the Mercedes-Benz vehicle right in front of them. In addition, all worker feedback, such as on quality inspections, is in digital form. This way of working not only increases efficiency, but also sets standards for sustainable production. Factory 56 alone will save around ten tonnes of paper per year thanks to the PAPERLESS FACTORY.

360-degree quality assurance

Mercedes-Benz produces top-quality vehicles. It is therefore crucial that all employees in production are supported to optimum effect in their work. The QUALITY LIVE quality management system, which is likewise part of the MO360 ecosystem, provides them at all times with press-button access to the live status of each individual vehicle. To make it possible to react to any non-conformities immediately and before the end of the production line, QUALITY LIVE has access to all production data. The system informs the quality management representatives and the workers proactively by smartphone or handheld about the current quality status in their area. As a subsystem of MO360, QUALITY LIVE also supports the structured problem-solving process as well as continuous process optimisation. It does this, when necessary, by making suggestions for efficient rework using AI methods. This makes for optimised quality control loops with the objective of ensuring that vehicles roll off the line without the need for rework. The stored knowledge is available to all the plants of the global production network.

Data availability and compatibility in real time

The applications of the MO360 ecosystem interlink seamlessly with each other: They are fully integrated both in terms of processes and data. As a result, production data for example flow fully automatically into digital Shopfloor Management (SFMdigital), so that those responsible are aware of the live status of production at any time. They have fast and focused access to production- and control-related KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), enabling them to react quickly and transparently to what is currently happening on the production line. Alongside workforce deployment, the KPIs include the first time capability rate (all vehicles without rectification work), the production targets per shift or the work in process, which shows how many vehicles make up the target/actual comparison in an area, for example in interior fitting. MO360 thus simplifies the decision-making process for efficient control of production while maintaining vehicle production in perfect quality constantly at the highest possible level. In daily shop floor rounds, SFMdigital supports the structured application of quality processes and at the same time functions as a digital communication tool for the problem-solving process, for example.

State-of-the-art software engineering

In developing the MO360 digital ecosystem, Mercedes-Benz relies on cross-functional, collaborating teams made up of IT and production experts. The focus of this product-oriented approach is on Full Digital Value the added value created by a digital tool in production. Newly developed functions are continually tested in ongoing production. The feedback gained in this way flows directly back into software development in short cycles.

State-of-the-art IT technologies and procedures play a dominant role in the digitalisation of Mercedes-Benz production. A key element is DevOps: with this form of organisation for modern software development, integrated teams take on overall responsibility not only for development (Dev) of the software components, but also for their subsequent operations (Ops). Technologically, MO360 relies on reusable API interfaces (Application Programming Interface), scalable cloud solutions, and primarily on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). As such, the MO360 teams make use of the advantages of the global developer community as well as the dynamism and cost-efficiency of Open Source projects.

The modular family of applications is intuitive to use thanks to a modern user interface and clear controls. A common element of all MO360 applications is the so-called microservice architecture. This refers to the modular design of the overall system using independent components, which, in turn, communicate via API interfaces. The microservice architecture enables further applications to be successively integrated into MO360 without coming up against complexity limits.

Thus, for example, in future the maintenance of all Mercedes-Benz plants around the world will be connected to the MO360 digital ecosystem with the SMART MAINTANANCE application. This is because maintenance data provides new potential, such as for predictive maintenance. An example: If MO360 can detect that an electric motor in a production facility will soon need replacing, this can be done promptly in a suitable time window before wear and downtimes result in possible additional costs. In future, the AUTO SC application will also be used to optimise logistical processes both between and within plants.

In a next step it is planned to network a complete factory with MO360 at one location and develop it as a test factory for the plants worldwide. It is also conceivable to make parts of MO360 available to interested partners. Our know-how is very much in demand we received this feedback in initial informal discussions in completely different fields of activity and sectors, says Jrg Burzer. Jan Brecht goes on to explain: For this, too, we are clearly thinking along the lines of Open Source. We will release our MO360 Frontend Toolkit on Github.com in the third quarter of 2020. We are already excited about receiving feedback and, above all, about additional innovation impulses from the worldwide community.
