Yes, Julian Assange has a solar-eclipse conspiracy theory for …

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is finding himself in an unique predicament. In the past when he has been criticized, it has mainly been for his alleged alliance with Russias Vladimir Putin.

Now Assange is facing criticism for something altogether different denying basic medical science.

On Monday evening, Assange tweeted that there is no danger staring directly at the moon during a total eclipse. Instead, as he explained to a Twitter user who responded to him, you look away when you see it ending. Eyes also move to protect themselves. The hysteria seems to be sustained by glasses company profits.

Assange later tried to defend himself by posting a NASA description of solar eclipses that did nothing to reinforce his claim that one can safely stare directly at the moon during an eclipse.

To understand howAssange got his science wrong, note thisobservation by Gizmodos Tom McKay:

In fairness to Assange, hes not wrong that a total solar eclipse is, in theory, safe to look at during the very short period of time that the main body of the sun is covered entirely by the moon. In that extremely limited circumstance, only parts of the the suns corona which do not emit enough energy to damage the eye are visible.

But the vast majority of people viewing an eclipse never see a totality. Theyll see a partial eclipse, which is when only a significant percentage of the sun is covered (as in New York today, whereonly 72 percent of the sun was obscured). Because so much of the sun is covered during a partial eclipse, ones eyes may not move to protect themselves. Instead, the sun will dim enough that one could get fooled into staring at it, even as its frying the interior of their retinas.

Assange blasts ‘absurd’ bid to class WikiLeaks a hostile intelligence service – RT

Published time: 24 Aug, 2017 15:02

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange slammed efforts to officially class his whistleblowing organization as a non-state hostile intelligence service branding it an attempt to put the Pompeo Doctrine into law.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is proposing a provision in its annual intelligence authorisation bill to declare WikiLeaks as such.

It is the sense of Congress that WikiLeaks and the senior leadership of WikiLeaks resemble a non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors and should be treated as such a service by the United States, the bill states.

Published Friday, the bill was passed by the committee late last month on a 14-1 vote. Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon voted against the measure citing the legal, constitutional and policy implications that the WikiLeaks provision may entail.

Assange tweeted a statement describing it as absurd to brand media organizations in such a way.

It is equivalent to suggesting that the CIA is a media organization. Publishers publish what they obtain, Assange said. Intelligence agencies do not.

It is an interesting thought experiment to consider where other media outlets lay on this spectrum. It is clear that if the 'Pompeo doctrine' applies to WikiLeaks then it applies equally if not more so to other serious outlets," he added.

US intelligence agencies have accused Russia of hacking emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and relaying the data to WikiLeaks for publication.

In April, CIA Director Mike Pompeo branded WikiLeaks a "hostile non-state intelligence agency" which should not be afforded the protections of the First Amendment under the constitution.

In March, WikiLeaks began publishing a series of leaks codenamed Vault 7, allegedly from the CIA, revealing the agencys arsenal of hacking tools.

Donald Trump could soon pardon Wikileaks founder Julian Assange after doing this – Express.co.uk

GETTY

Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher revealed he discussed discuss what might be necessary to get him out of asylum, when he met with Mr Assange earlier this week.

And speculation was reignited yesterday when Trump Alert, the Twitter account which tracks the Presidents Twitter activity, reported that the President had begun following Mr Assange.

However, the President may have quickly unfollowed the Wikileaks founder, with the account no longer listed as on his followers for both his presidential and personal accounts.

Mr Assange has been holed up inside the embassy for almost exactly five years and has been granted political asylum by Ecuador.

The Australian hacker faces sexual assault charges in Sweden and, if extradited there, he could be deported to the USA, where he could face charges relating to publishing documents leaked by Edward Snowden on his Wikileaks site.

In his interview, Mr Rohrabacher suggested Mr Assange could be pardoned in exchange for information about the Democratic National Committee (DNC) email leak in 2016.

The California representative told the Daily Caller: (Assange) has information that will be of dramatic importance to the United States and the people of our country as well as to our government.

Thus if he comes up with that, you know hes going to expect something in return.

He cant even leave the embassy to get out to Washington to talk to anybody if he doesnt have a pardon.

Mr Assange has controversially claimed Russia was not involved in the DNC email hack, contrary to reports by US intelligence services.

Astronomers, doctors and other experts alike are in total agreement on one pointdont stare at a solar eclipse without eye protection unless you want to damage your vision or go blind, you goddamn idiot.

This warning was in large part heeded by all but the very uninformed or the very impulsive, categories which both naturally included President Donald Trump, who soaked in as much luxurious unshielded eclipse viewing as he could on Monday. Now Wikileaks chief Julian Assange, whose behavior and vaguely pro-Trump leanings have grown more concerning in direct proportion to the amount of time he has spent locked inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, is warning the public not to fall for Big Safety Glasses grift.

Early Monday evening, Assange tweeted Theres no danger staring directly at the moon during a total eclipse. Before/after, the moon only partly covers the sun = usual sun danger.

He added, You look away when you see it ending. Eyes also move to protect themselves. The hysteria seems to be sustained by glasses company profits.

Theyll see a partial eclipse, which is when only a significant percentage of the sun is covered (as in New York today, where only 72 percent of the sun was obscured). Because so much of the sun is covered during a partial eclipse, ones eyes may not move to protect themselves. Instead, the sun will dim enough that one could get fooled into staring at it, even as its frying the interior of their retinas.

As NASA noted, the reason one should still use protective glasses or other equipment during a total solar eclipse is because as the moon rotates in front of the sun, its very difficult to determine the exact window of time someone might have to look at it. Again, since the vast majority of people are not in the path of the totalitythough may believe they are, especially if theyre close to itits really, really for the best that everyone just wears the damn safety glasses. For both of these reasons, advocating otherwise sounds an awful lot like a teenage boy arguing he doesnt need to wear a condom because he knows when to pull out.

There was no safe time for Trump to look at the eclipse, because the sun was only 80 percent obscured in Washington, D.C.

Glasses company profits seems a little naive, considering high demand took retailers by surprise and the rarity of major eclipses does not really seem all that conducive to the formation of an astronomy-industrial complex, but heythe next time Assange wants to take a cake out of the oven or something, hes free to defy Big Oven Mitts too. Whatever.

Democrat’s Call for FBI Probe of Meeting Gets Assange and Rohrabacher’s Goat – OC Weekly

Monday, August 21, 2017 at 7:24 a.m.

Harley Rouda asked the FBI to investigate Dana Rohrabacher's meeting with Julian Assange.

HarleyforCongress.com

On Friday, we told you about criticism by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and a Democratic opponent of Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Waaaay Up Putin's Ass) meeting two days before with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Now, another Democratic rival has asked for an FBI investigation into Rohrabacher's political and financial ties to Russia in the wake of the meeting.

Actually, Harley Rouda, who is one of nine announced candidates seeking The Mouth That Rohrabachered's 48th Congressional District seat next year, says he is amending his original complaint sent to the FBI in regards to the veteran congressman.

"Despite the fact that intelligence agencies across the globe have repeatedly and continuously asserted that WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange coordinated with Russian actors in their leaks of DNC emails, and that Rohrabachers colleagues have claimed that he is paid by Vladimir Putin, Rohrabacher took this meeting anyway," writes Rouda.

The candidate concluded that, "As an American citizen, I strongly urge you to open up an investigation as soon as possible and if necessary, subpoenaing the necessary documents to make a determination about Congressman Rohrabachers potential unlawful ties to Russia and its officials."

The Washington Post sent Rouda's letter to Rohrabacher, who reportedly replied that if anybodys politicizing foreign policy, it aint me.

Rouda's letter was met with a more menacing response from Assange via Twitter:

That led to a Rouda retweet:

Here is Rouda's full letter:

To: Los Angeles Field Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation From: Harley E. Rouda Jr. Subject: Congressman Dana Rohrabacher

To Whom It May Concern:

In light of an article in the Aug. 17, 2017, edition of the Los Angeles Times entitled: Rep. Dana Rohrabacher meets with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, plans to tell Trump what he heard, Id like to amend my original letter to the FBI to include this disturbing new information demonstrating the potential depths of Rohrabachers political and financial ties to Russia and Vladimir Putin.

Despite the fact that intelligence agencies across the globe have repeatedly and continuously asserted that WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange coordinated with Russian actors in their leaks of DNC emails, and that Rohrabachers colleagues have claimed that he is paid by Vladimir Putin, Rohrabacher took this meeting anyway.

In the statement released by Rohrabachers office and his subsequent interview with the Daily Caller, it was revealed that Congressman Dana Rohrabacher not only met with the infamous fugitive Julian Assange, but that he and Assange also talked about what might be necessary to get [Assange] out and discussed a pardon from Trump.

As an American citizen, I strongly urge you to open up an investigation as soon as possible and if necessary, subpoenaing the necessary documents to make a determination about Congressman Rohrabachers potential unlawful ties to Russia and its officials. The American public needs to definitively know whether Rohrabacher has any financial ties to the Russian regime.

Sincerely,

Harley E. Rouda Jr.

Assange meets US congressman, vows to prove Russia did not …

Julian Assange told a U.S. congressmanon Tuesdayhe can prove the leaked Democratic Party documents he published during last years election did not come from Russia and promised additional helpful information about the leaks in the near future.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican who is friendly to Russia and chairs an important House subcommittee on Eurasia policy, became the first American congressman to meet with Assange during a three-hour private gathering at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where the WikiLeaks founder has been holed up for years.

Rohrabacher recounted his conversation with Assange to The Hill.

Pressed for more detail on the source of the documents, Rohrabacher said he had information to share privately with President Trump.

Julian also indicated that he is open to further discussions regarding specific information about the DNC email incident that is currently unknown to the public, he said.

U.S. intelligence has insisted it has solid proof which it has not made public that Russia was behind last years election hacks that embarrassed Democrats, including unflattering revelations about nominee Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham ClintonAssange meets U.S. congressman, vows to prove Russia did not leak him documents High-ranking FBI official leaves Russia probe OPINION | Steve Bannon is Trump's indispensable man don't sacrifice him to the critics MORE and her campaign chairman, John Podesta, whose personal email account was also hacked.

Assange has suggested in the past that Russia wasnt the source of his leaked information. Tuesdaymarked the first time he has engaged with a U.S. lawmaker.

Assange has been living at Ecuadors embassy in London since 2012 after seeking diplomatic asylum. He rose to prominence after publishing thousands of sensitive U.S. diplomatic and military documents that included leaks related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Assange is a controversial figure; he is a hero to supporters who argue his leaks unveiled critical information about the evils of U.S. military and foreign policy butis a villain to critics, including many GOP lawmakers, who argue the leaks jeopardized national security.

Rohrabachers visit with Assange, as a result, is likely to be controversial with many of his colleagues.

Rohrabacher said he had information he planned to carry back to Trump when he returned to the United States, including a request that the WikiLeaks organization be given a news media seat inside the White House press room.

Julian passionately argued the case that WikiLeaks was vital to informing the public about controversial though necessary issues. He hoped that WikiLeaks an award-winning journalistic operation might be granted a seat in the White House press corps. As a former newsman myself I can't see a reason why they shouldn't be granted news status for official press conferences, he said.

As for other information to be given to the president, Rohrabacher said: We left with the understanding that we would be going into further details in the near future. The rest of the message is for the president directly, and I hope to convey it to him as more details come in.

The Democratic National Committee cast doubt on Assange's claims.

Well take the word of the U.S. intelligence community over Julian Assange and Putins favorite Congressman," Adrienne Watson, the DNC's deputy communications director, said in a statement.

Rohrabacher said the meeting occurred with Assange, his lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, and Chuck Johnson, aconservative activist and right-wing provocateur,in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

Unbeknownst to me, I am the first member of Congress to visit there with Mr. Assange, he said.

The lawmaker also said Assange appeared in good health, allaying concerns his time in asylum at the embassy had taken a toll.

Contrary to what the fake news media has alleged, Julian seemed in good health and committed to his principles, he said.

Trump has at times praised Assange and used a Fox News interview this year with the WikiLeaks founder to cast doubt on Russias involvement in the DNC leak.

Report: GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher Meets With Julian Assange …

According to Rohrabacher, Assange reaffirmed his aggressive denial that the Russians had anything to do with the hacking of the DNC during the election, in the meeting, adding, He has given us a lot of information. He said theres more to come. We dont have the entire picture yet.

Rohrabacher further claimed that the information he received would have an earth-shattering political impact.

It wouldnt be so important if Democrats hadnt focused so inordinately on the Russians. Democrats are creating a total upheaval over this, he proclaimed.I have some information to give the president before I give information to anyone else.

The meeting was reportedlyset up by conservative journalist Charles C. Johnson, who claimed that Rohrabacher would be the envoy in charge of bringing back a deal to the Trump White House.

Johnsons presence was confirmed by a spokesman for Rohrabacher.

Julian Assange, master of the (dark) arts – Apollo Magazine

Introducing Rakewell, Apollos wandering eye on the art world. Look out for regular posts taking a rakish perspective on art and museum stories.

The Rake has learnt a lot from Raffi Khatchadourians profile of Julian Assange in the current issue of the New Yorker. For one thing, Knightsbridges least outgoing resident has quite the talent for an artistic simile. Its like looking at a very complex Hieronymus Bosch painting from a distance, he told Khatchadourian of his initial reaction to receiving a cache of 20,000 emails leaked from the Democratic National Committee last year. You have to get close and interact with it, then you start to get a feel.

Khatchadourian recounts an evening in which the Australian artist George Gittoes turned up at the Ecuadorian embassy to discuss a large diptych he was painting of his compatriot. When Gittoess wife, Rose, who was making a documentary about the paintings, suggested that the artist and his subject be filmed in conversation in front of the works, the reaction was hostile.

There cannot be an image of Julian Assange looking at himself in a painting, Assange said. That image is much worse for me than the painting is positive. Understand?

Its not as if this is the first time Assange has taken an interest in art. Earlier this year, he enthusiastically tweeted that modern art was created as a CIA cultural weapon to attract the educated, linking to an article about the agencys promotion of Abstract Expressionism during the Cold War. Shame he couldnt make the Royal Academy show last year, really.

Calls for FBI investigate to Dana Rohrabacher’s meeting with Julian Assange grow – Salon

Just to be clear, I am an advocate of political and corporate transparency. So too, I would imagine, are manyof Julian Assanges supporters.

Do you know who doesnt support transparency, though? Julian Assange.

Sure, he supports transparency forspecific groups when doing so fits withhis personal ideological agenda the Democratic National Committee, the American military-industrial complex, etc. But a true advocate of transparency believes that all powerful institutions should be held accountable.

They are consistent.

As a new report reveals, consistencyjust isnt Assanges bag. The most likely explanation for this (aside from his right-wing biases) is that he seems to be a tool of the Russian government. According to a new report by Foreign Policy, Assange refused to publishat least 68 gigabytes of data with documents that contained damning information about the Russian government. This decision occurred in the summer of 2016, around the same time that Assange was publishing Democratic National Committee emails to damage Hillary Clintons campaign emails which are believed to have been obtained by a Russian hack (a story by The Nation attempts to cast doubt on that but is currently under review by the publications editors).

According to partial chat logs reviewed by Foreign Policy, WikiLeaks came up with a number of excuses for not publishing the documents. Initially, they claimed that the documents were already public, even though the data that had been previously published (all the way back in 2014) was less than half of what was presented to Assange two years later. Later, WikiLeaks told the source that they wouldnt publish the documents because they wanted to focuson the 2016 presidential election (i.e., destroying Hillary Clinton).

Is there an election angle? Were not doing anything until after the election unless its [sic] fast or election related. We dont have the resources, WikiLeaks wrote, adding that doing so would be diversionary.

WikiLeaks confirmed this in a direct message on Twitter to Foreign Policy, writing that WikiLeaks schedules publications to maximize readership and reader engagement.During distracting media events such as the Olympics or a high profile election, unrelated publications are sometimes delayed until the distraction passes but never are rejected for this reason.

They also claimed that WikiLeaks rejects all submissions that it cannot verify. WikiLeaks rejects submissions that have already been published elsewhere or which are likely to be considered insignificant. WikiLeaks has never rejected a submission due to its country of origin.

As the source of the messages told Foreign Policy, Many Wikileaks staff and volunteers or their families suffered at the hands of Russian corruption and cruelty, we were sure Wikileaks would release it. Assange gave excuse after excuse.

More recently, Assange made his alliance with Russias totalitarian regime crystal clear bymeeting on Wednesdaywith Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of California. Rohrabacher, you may recall, has earned the nicknamePutins favorite congressmandue to his bizarre fixation with and support of the Russian authoritarian regime. In case you think this story is all about Russia, take a look at the other person who attended the Assange-Rohrabacher meeting: Charles C. Johnson, anotorious white supremacist, who claims he helped arrange the meeting. Johnson was banned from Twitter for encouraging his supporters for help in taking out a civil rights activist.

The Washington Post reported on Friday thata Democrat running against Rohrabacher has asked the FBI to probe the Republican congressmans political and financial ties to Russia

This isnt the first time that Assange has opposed leaks which embarrass Russia. Back in 2014, when the Panama Papers exposed widespread corruption among the Russian elite, Assange denounced those leaksas an American plot (without evidence). Nor is Assanges apparent connection with a virulent racist his only association with the far right. He has also favorably retweeted posts from alt right pundit and discredited journalist Mike Cernovich, expressed support for alt right darling and fired Google engineer James Damore and, as far back as 2013, endorsed a slate of far right political parties in Australian elections.

And, of course, one must not forget that Assange has repeatedly demonstrated that misogyny is one of the main ideological fuels that drives his various crusades. This fact has been evident for years primarily in the fact that Assange is accused of raping two women, which he blames on feminism, and only avoided accountability by running out the clock but most recently became clear in the documentary Risk.

I am certain that I will receive numerous angry emailsand comments from Assange fanboys insisting that, by virtue of criticizing their dear leader, I must be opposed to the goal of transparency. To this, I simply respond that unless those supporters are also sympathetic to the alt right and/or Putins Russia (which is essentially fascist itself) they need to seriously reevaluate their hero worship for the man.

Transparency is a noble and vital cause. Assange is, to put it generously, a severely compromised individual, one whose moral and ideological shortcomings make it impossible for people of good will and genuine intellectual detachment to support him.

The latest revelations from Foreign Policy, as well as his meeting with Putins favorite congressman and his white supremacist ally, only reinforce that point.

California politics updates: Rohrabacher says he’ll take info he learned from Julian Assange back to President Trump – Los Angeles Times

Orange County GOP Rep.Dana Rohrabacher confirmed that he met Wednesdaywith WikiLeaksfounder Julian Assange, who is still living in asylum at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

In a statement, Rohrabacher'soffice said theAustralian fugitive "emphatically stated that the Russians were not involved" in the theft ofDemocratic National Committee emails during the 2016 presidential campaign. The emails, which were published by WikiLeaks, putDemocratic candidate Hillary Clinton on the defensive.

The conversation between Rohrabacher and Assange, which was first reported by the Daily Caller,"ranged over many topics," according to thestatement. The statement didn't reveal much more, but said "the congressman plans to divulge more of what he found directly to President Trump."

Multiple U.S. intelligence agencies have agreed Russia was involved in the theft of Democratic Party emails and tried to influence the 2016 election to benefit Trump.

The Justice Department, along with multipleHouse and Senate committees, are investigating potential ties between Trump's campaign and election meddling.

Rohrabacher, who has long been criticized for his fondness forRussia, believes he is the only congressman who hasvisited Assange. Rohrabacher's name has repeatedly come up in discussions of the investigation into Russian interference.

His spokesman did not respond to requests for additional comment, including questions about how the trip was funded and whether the White House was aware of the trip.

Assange has been hiding out in the Ecuadorean Embassy since 2012 to avoid sexual assault allegations against him in Sweden. That investigation wasdroppedthis year, but British authorities have said he could still be arrested for jumping bail if he leaves the embassy.

In April, CIA Director Mike Pompeodismissed Assange as a "narcissist" and called WikiLeaks a "non-state hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors like Russia." House Speaker Paul Ryan has criticized Assange as a "sycophant for Russia."

Trump himself has expressed an affinity for Assange in the past, tweeting praise for the fugitive.

The Washington Post reported in April that federal prosecutors were weighing whether to bring charges against members of WikiLeaks, in part over information leaked by Chelsea Manning, the U.S. soldier convicted of handing over diplomatic cables to the organization.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is demanding that Rohrabacherresign from his seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

"Democrats and Republicans alike agree that Julian Assange is a threat to America's national security and has aligned with the Kremlin to undermine our elections," said DCCC spokesman Drew Godinich, who called Rohrabacher'sbehavior "completely shocking."

Rohrabacher is one of the top Republican incumbentsCalifornia Democrats are hoping to topple in 2018. He has already attracted nine challengers, most of them Democrats, including real estate broker Harley Rouda, who released a campaign ad criticizing the 15-term Republican for his repeated defense of Russia.

Rohrabacher, who once worked for the Orange County Register, told The Hillthat he also planned to convey a request from Assange to Trumpfor a WikiLeaksseat inside the White House press room.

Julian passionately argued the case that WikiLeaks was vital to informing the public about controversial though necessary issues," he told The Hill. "As a former newsman myself, I can't see a reason why they shouldn't be granted news status for official press conferences."
