AMY GOODMAN: We return to our interview with WikiLeaks founder and publisher Julian Assange from inside Ecuadors Embassy in London, where he has political asylum and has been living for more than two years.
AMY GOODMAN: In a nutshell, Julian, if you would, can you summarize the releases of documents since the "Collateral Murder" video was released in the spring of 2010? For people who arent keeping up on things, and even if you are an avid viewer of the media or reader of the media, especially in the United States, they may know who Julian Assange is, the publisher of WikiLeaks, but actually what it is you have released, the substance of these documents, could you just go through them?
JULIAN ASSANGE: WikiLeaks has been publishing since 2007. We have published material from every countryalmost every country in the world and about every country in the world. We are now up to just over eight million individual documents that we have released during that period. Now, the heat in the debate with the United States arose in 2010. We have had heated debates with other countries, and weve had major court cases in the United States in relation to our fight with Swiss banks and so on. In 2010, the number of documents and publications that we were releasing, each one after another, ended up erecting a grand jury against us by the DOJ, National Security Division. And so, we entered into a major media conflict with the U.S. government.
So, going in order, they are "Collateral Murder," a documentary that we produced based on the tape from an Apache helicopter mowing down 12 to 18 people in Baghdad, including two Reuters journalists, and very clearly engaged in the murder. And the murder was an unarmed man, wounded, crawling in the gutter, and good Samaritans came to rescue him, and all of them were killed, and two children came away with serious injuries.
Then the Afghanistan War Logs, now, these came at a very important moment in 2010, where Michael Hastings had justthe late Michael Hastings had just released a report on McChrystal, and these publications came not long after that.
AMY GOODMAN: This is the Rolling Stone journalist who died in a car crash.
JULIAN ASSANGE: Rolling Stone journalist who died in a car crash. And that shifted the debate about Afghanistan. Early in 2010, it was: What can we do to win in Afghanistan? After the Hastings article about McChrystal and WikiLeaks war logs, the result was: There was no longer a debate about can we win in Afghanistan; it is how were we going to get out of Afghanistan. So it was quite an important shift.
Then, with the Iraq War Logs, which were published in October 2010, which in some ways has been one of our best analytical works, we worked together with not just other media organizations, but a number of statistical organizations to work out what the kill count was for Iraq, and combining with other figures, and we ended up with more than 100,000 civilian casualtiesin fact, 15,000 new, completely undocumented civilian killsand documenting U.S. involvement and approval of Iraqi torture centers within the police and many killings of civilians at checkpoints and some political issues and so on. And that produced a number of inquiries and has fed into cases that have been taken by Iraqis, and that has now ended up with an ICC filing, International Criminal Court filing, against the British military.
If we then move on, in December of that year, we started the release of Cablegate, the more than 251,000 U.S. diplomatic cables from all around the world from 1966 to 2010. And that is the largest compendium of diplomacy that has ever been released. Its about 3,000 volumes of material. As a sort of history of how the modern world behaves in practice, its extremely important, and it fed into the Tunisian revolution quite directly. In fact, Ben Alis propaganda minister, after the government fell, said that the WikiLeaks releases about Tunisia is what broke the back of the Ben Ali system.

AMY GOODMAN: We turn now to a Democracy Now! exclusive. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has just entered his third year inside Ecuadors Embassy in London where he has political asylum. Assange faces investigations in both Sweden and the United States. Here in the U.S., a secret grand jury is investigating WikiLeaks for its role in publishing a trove of leaked documents about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as State Department cables. In Sweden, hes wanted for questioning on allegations of sexual misconduct, though no charges have been filed. Late last week, there was the first break in the Swedish case in two years. A Swedish court announced it would hold a hearing July 16th over a request by his lawyers for prosecutors to hand over new evidence and withdraw the arrest warrant.
Well, late last night, we flew back to New York after interviewing Julian Assange inside the embassy.
AMY GOODMAN: The Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where Julian Assange is holed uphe has been here for just over two years, just celebrated his 43rd birthday inside the embassy. Here you can see the British police, and right in front of me is the balcony where Julian Assange has come out and addressed his supporters and addressed the media. The Ecuadorean flag hangs from that balcony. As to when Julian Assange will come out, well, he is concerned, if he steps foot outside, he will be arrested by the British police. So, for now, hes inside, this nomad of the digital age.
Were in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where Julian Assange took refuge two years ago. Hes been detained in Britain for close now to four years.
Welcome to Democracy Now!, Julian.
JULIAN ASSANGE: Thank you, Amy.
AMY GOODMAN: How are you doing here? Its been over two years that you have really not seen daylight for any extended period of time.
JULIAN ASSANGE: Theres been nearly four years that Ive been detained without charge, in one form or another, here in the United Kingdom, first in prison, the solitary confinement, then under house arrest for about 18 months, and now two years here in the embassy. The Ecuadorean government gave me political asylum in relation to the ongoing national security investigation by the DOJ, the Department of Justice, in the United States into our publications and also into sourcing efforts. So, did I enter into a conspiracy with Chelsea Manning, who was sentenced last year to 35 years in prison?
So, the question as to how Im doing, of course, personally, its a difficult situation, in a variety of ways. I would say that when someones in this position, what you are most concerned about is the interruption in your family relationships. So, because of the security situation, thats made it very hard for my children and my parents.

Exclusive: DN! Goes Inside Assange’s Embassy Refuge to ...
LONDON: Julian Assange has been asked to star in a fashion show by British designer Ben Westwood at Ecuadors London embassy, where the WikiLeaks founder is currently holed up in a bid to avoid extradition to Sweden. Former photographer Westwood, son of legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, wants good looking Assange, 42, to appear with six other models as part of a fringe event during London Fashion Week in September. Julian is a popular hero, the designer said in a statement given to AFP. He has done a great deal to change public opinion. Through WikiLeaks people have been able to compare the facts with the official version of the story. He is a good-looking man and I hope he is going to model, he added. Mother Vivienne is also a keen supporter of Assange, and wore a T-shirt with the slogan I am Julian Assange when she paid him a visit at the embassy in 2012. Other celebrities to visit Assange have included Lady Gaga and director Oliver Stone. Hollywood A-lister George Clooney has been invited to the show, which is inspired by Clint Eastwoods costume in the spaghetti western films, according to Westwoods PR spokesman. Assange first sought refuge at the embassy on June 19, 2012, to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is under investigation on allegations of sexual assault. Anti-rape campaigner Jill Saward criticized the decision to ask Assange to model as distasteful. Its fashionable to get on board (with his cause), she told the Times. I find it really distasteful. What they should be saying is go and clear your name and then we will support you, but to hold this event for a man who has cost this government millions of pounds is wrong. The message thats going to come across is We dont care what he might have done.

Assange asked to model during London Fashion Week
You know what they say about the relative strangeness of fiction and reality.
And now, Julian Assange is slated to model(from the Ecuadorian Embassy, though) as part of London Fashion Week. Ben Westwood, designer and son of Vivienne Westwood, tapped the Wikileaker, saying he hoped to keep him in the public eye and use him as fashion inspiration.
Apparently the fashions will be inspired both by Clint Eastwood and by Assanges own look the beret did not go unremarked.
So this is happening, it seems.
If Whistleblowers and Newsmakers FromTwo-ish Years Ago And Today are going to become fashion inspirations, here are a few morelookbooks:

The model: Julian Assange
Here, Julian has accessorized with a speech, a classic and versatile accessory that goes with almost any outfit, including this fetching coat and scarf. You can see why Benedict Cumberbatch, also known for his dramatic coats, felt comfortable stepping into Julians shoes for a film role.
How to get this look: Do something elaborate to your hair. Wear berets a lot. Found Wikileaks. Escape to Ecuador to avoid being extradited to Sweden.

Julian Assange, runway model? Some lookbooks, from Snowden ...
Julian Assange may not have intended to make a name for himself in fashion, but the WikiLeaks founder has found friends in the industry.
Two years ago, Dame Vivienne Westwood crafted an "I am Julian Assange" t-shirt to close her fashion show in London. The piece was said to demonstrate her support for the controversial public figure.
Now, her son has done one better. Ben Westwood has tapped Assange himself to appear in his September runway show alongside six other models. The collection will feature ensembles inspired by Clint Eastwood's spaghetti western films, a soundtrack lifted from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and at least one custom "Julian Assange print" garment. George Clooney and fiancee Amal Alamuddin have reportedly been invited to attend.
Westwood told the Daily Mail that he conceived of the unlikely gig to "highlight Julian Assange's plight" and ensure that Assange does not "slip into obscurity" more than two years after he first sought asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy.
"What happened to him is totally unfair," Westwood said.
As Assange must stay put in order to evade extradition to Sweden on charges of sexual assault, Westwood will bring the catwalk to his de facto residence in London. And while press conferences held at the building suggest a challenging aesthetic, low ceilings, moderate acoustics, and fluorescent lighting sound very "bureaucracy chic" to us.

Julian Assange: WikiLeaks founder, lightning rod, and now... fashion model?
Apparently so. According to multiple reports, he's been asked to make his modeling debut during London Fashion Week in a show by designer Ben Westwood. And he won't have to risk arrest to work the catwalk.
The September show will take place at the Ecuadorian embassy, where Assange has for two years sought political asylum from a British court order to extradite him to Sweden over sexual assault allegations.
Westwood -- who is not listed under designers on the official London Fashion Week site -- found inspiration for his upcoming collection from "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly," a '60s Italian Western in which Clint Eastwood plays an enigmatic loner.
"My view about Julian is that he is a popular hero and he's done a great deal to change public opinion," Westwood said in a statement. "I think it's a citizen's duty to stand up for justice and freedom of speech. I want to highlight Julian Assange's plight."
Assange's WikiLeaks site has published more than 8 million anonymously leaked documents since 2006, including a trove of classified information.
Westwood, a photographer known for his erotic shots, is the oldest son of famed designer Dame Vivienne Westwood, also an Assange supporter. She created an "I am Julian Assange" T-shirt bearing his image and wore it when visiting Assange at the embassy in 2012. The shirt also appeared in one of her own runway shows.
Assange, 42, will reportedly appear in the London Fashion Week fringe event along with six other models. Still, fashion magazines shouldn't set aside space for an Assange photo spread just yet.
According to a New York Times fashion blog, Richard Hillgrove, a London publicist working on the September Ben Westwood show, has said the Assange modeling gig is still under discussion.
