Edward Snowden does not use an iPhone

THE EDWARD SNOWDEN INSECURITY WAGON stopped late last week in Russia for just long enough to scatter tales of wide-open iPhone hardware and easily cored user credentials, according to reports.

Snowden's lawyer told reporters in Russia that he does not use an iPhone. We assume that he does not use a lot of common or open means of communication these days, because he worries about what it means for his liberty.

Snowden, who is currently enjoying Russia as his home, does not have time to use the popular phone, and is unlikely to ever make time. Instead he chooses a much simpler method. Sadly not the pigeon.

"Edward never uses an iPhone. He's got a simple phone," said the lawyer, according to reports.

"The iPhone has special software that can activate itself without the owner having to press a button and gather information about him. That's why on security grounds he refused to have this phone."

Apple's view on vendors, users and data is that the twain should never meet. Recently Tim Cook told the world that neither he nor Apple give a fig about user details, unlike others.

"We try not to collect data. We are not reading your email, we are not reading your iMessage. It is encrypted. There is no key," he said.

"We run a very different company. Companies should be very transparent. From our point of view, you can see what we're doing on the credit card thing. We're not in that business.

"I'm offended by lots of it. I think people should have a right to privacy. We want to be totally transparent."

The thrust of his message is that Apple does not play host to any backdoors.

NSA leaker Edward Snowden refuses to use Apple’s iPhone …

By AppleInsider Staff Wednesday, January 21, 2015, 08:03 am PT (11:03 am ET)

"Edward never uses an iPhone, he's got a simple phone," Snowden's lawyer said in a recent interview, as noted by Sputnik. "The iPhone has special software that can activate itself without the owner, having to press a button and gather information about him, that's why on security grounds he refused to have this phone."

It is unclear whether the "special software" referred to consists of standard diagnostic tools, or if Snowden believes U.S. intelligence agencies have compromised Apple's mobile operating system.

Apple was one of the first companies accused of participation in the NSA's PRISM data mining initiative, following Snowden's release of hundreds of classified NSA documents. The PRISM project is said to have involved the extraction of "audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents and connection logs that enable analysts to track a person's movements and contacts over time."

Apple immediately denied the accusation, saying at the time that they "have never heard of PRISM" and that they "do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers."

Later leaks revealed that the NSA had created spyware targeted at the iPhone, which would have given intelligence services access to SMS messages, on-board data, live microphone feeds, and positioning information. It remains unclear how successful that program was, and Apple again denied involvement.

"Apple has never worked with the NSA to create a backdoor in any of our products, including iPhone," the company said following news of the project. "Additionally, we have been unaware of this alleged NSA program targeting our products. We care deeply about our customers' privacy and security."

Edward Snowden says secret Apple spyware is the reason he wont use an iPhone

IsApples wildly popular iPhone series hiding spyware that can collect information about users without their knowledge. As thoroughly as developers have dug through Apples iOS code over the past seven and a half years, one would think functionality like that would have been unearthed by now. According to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, however, iPhones are capable of activating special software behind the scenes that collects information about users, who are completely oblivious to the fact that their phones are gatheringthis sensitive data.

Edward Snowdens lawyer Anatoly Kucherena recently spoke with Russian news agencyRIA Novosti, and their conversation spanned several topics. As Russian news site Sputnik noted, however, the iPhone was among the topics that were discussed, andKucherenas comments were quite interesting, to say the least.

Edward never uses an iPhone; hes got a simple phone,Kucherenasaid. The iPhone has special software that can activate itself without the owner having to press a button and gather information about him; thats why on security grounds he refused to have this phone.

Edward Snowden says secret Apple spyware is the reason he wont use an iPhone

Does Snowden know something we dont? The notorious whistleblower certainly has access to plenty of spy agency documents, and recently published fileshe stole from the NSA revealed thatBritish agency GCHQ indeed uses Apples iPhone UDID system to track users.

We havent seen anything new in the Snowden documents that suggests Apple itself has secret software on its iPhones that collect personal data without users knowledge, however, so it will be interesting to see ifKucherena or Snowden himself will elaborate on these comments in the coming days.
