There has been an argument made that we have had plenty of distractions to keep us from paying attention to the economy. From the situation in Europe to the missing plane in East Asia, there are a lot of people that are looking at the crisis of the week knowing full well than when all of the dust clears, when the wreckage is found and put back together we will have to deal with an economy that is devolving and what it may become in the near future.

Arguably, there seems to be a positive outcome of the shaky economy and that is the birth of cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin at the moment has captured the imagination of banks and investors. Bitcoin has the worlds largest virtual currency market capitalization at over $8 billion dollars. Apart from bitcoin, there are at least 100 other cryptocurrencies, ranging from Ripple at ($1.4 billion) and Litecoin ($453 million) also at the high end there is Germanys Deutsche eMark ($106,000) and Grumpycoin ($88,000) at the low end. Even criminals have begun to diversify into homemade cryptocurrencies.

There is also a cryptocurrency called Mazacoin that was created by Payu Harris in hopes that the Lakota can use it in order to have greater independence.

The question is: does the boom in cryptocurrency indicate that people want to become independent of the almighty dollar?

There are many people that agree that while we are seeing successes and failures with cryptocurrency that the dollar will eventually go the way of digital.

InformationWeek reports: According to former Central Intelligence Agency CTO Gus Hunt, in the future, the dollar could well become a crypto currency. Governments going to learn from Bitcoin, and all the official government currencies are going to become crypto currencies themselves, he said during a recent panel discussion in San Francisco hosted by information security firm eSentire, for which he sits on the board of advisers.

Others are saying that bitcoin will do for digital currency what Napster did for downloading music.

It is creating the format for which all digital dollars will be distributed.

Bitcoin Isn’t the Only Cryptocurrency in Town

Currencies designed to fix perceived flaws in Bitcoin could lead to competition that makes the idea of digital cryptocurrency stick.

In recent weeks, the digital currency Bitcoin has soared and then dipped in value, along the way attracting more public attention than ever before and speculation as to whether it could become an established and widely accepted way to pay for goods and services.

But Bitcoin isnt the only cryptocurrency out there. Several others are also surging in popularity and value, and they claim to offer technical improvements that make them better suited to mainstream use.

Some of these competing currencies already represent significant stores of value. The value of a single bitcoin on the most popular exchange was $93.70 at time of publication, and the total value of all bitcoins in circulation just over $1 billion (it was over $2 billion at the markets high point last week). The largest alternative cryptocurrency, litecoins, were worth $2.31 each and $38 million in total; the next largest, PPCoin, were worth $0.22 each adding up to a total value of $4 million.

Bitcoin is based on mathematical techniques that control the production of new bitcoins, make it possible for a person to verify money sent to them is genuine, rule out counterfeiting, and limit the maximum number that can ever exist (to 21 million) (see What Bitcoin Is, and Why It Matters).

The Bitcoin alternatives are inspired by that design, which is published openly, and try to offer improvements.

One of Litecoins most significant claimed improvements over Bitcoin is that it allows transactions to be confirmed as legitimate much more quickly, says Charles Lee, who designed the currency, which is now maintained by him and a small group of other enthusiasts.

Bitcoin transactions are verified by the work of software run by other people using the currency, a process that takes on average 10 minutes and can be much longer, an hour in the case of many exchange sites. Lee says that hinders operators of online stores from using the currency. With Bitcoin, sometimes merchants are forced to accept unconfirmed transactions because confirmations are way too slow, he says. Faster confirmations lead to a more useful currency. Litecoin transactions are confirmed on average every 2.5 minutes, which Litecoins developers say is more practical for businesses.

Both Litecoin and the third most-popular cryptocurrency, PPCoin, also generate new coins in a way intended to be more practical than Bitcoins design. New bitcoins are created through a process known as mining, in which people run software that competes to solve a computational puzzle. Each time a puzzle is cracked, new coins are awarded and a new challenge is set. In a neat twist, the process of solving a puzzle also confirms the validity of recent transactions made with bitcoins.

However, because more powerful computers are more likely to solve these puzzles, an arms race between bitcoin miners has resulted. Today only those with very powerful, customized machines have a chance of profitably mining bitcoins and miners are still racing to build ever more powerful mining rigs.

Chinese Bitcoin exchange focuses on cash transactions to keep cryptocurrency in play

Chinese banks may be cutting ties to Bitcoin suppliers, but that isnt stopping a local Bitcoin exchange from making physical cash a way to buy the cryptocurrency.

On Tuesday, BTC China, one of the nations largest exchanges, took a step to establish its own Bitcoin sellers network with the launch of a new web app, called Picaso ATM.

By using the app, the exchanges own clients can sell their bitcoins to customers.

BTC China is advocating sellers set their own profit margins and get cash in return. To complete transactions on the app, the sellers must meet face-to-face and input confirmation codes through their smartphones. The bitcoins are then transferred over to the customers account on BTC Chinas exchange.

Although the cash approach may seem outdated, China has been moving to ban banks and third-party payment services from dealing in bitcoins. Buying the virtual currency could once be done by wiring funds to an exchanges bank account. But starting this month, certain banks have begun closing the corporate accounts used by several exchanges.

While the ensuing crackdown hasnt affected all, its put pressure on Bitcoin suppliers to come up with new ways to keep the virtual currency in circulation.

In BTC Chinas case, the exchanges bank accounts are still in operation, but the companys sees promise in using cash transaction to popularize Bitcoin among Chinese users.

Despite the nations strict stance on Bitcoin, authorities have said consumers are still free to buy the virtual currency.

We do want to create a seller network, but we also simply want to help facilitate the ease at which people can acquire Bitcoin, BTC China said in an email.

On Tuesday, the exchange also unveiled what it claimed was the countrys first physical ATM Bitcoin machine. It is located in a coffee shop based in Shanghai.
