Chelsea Manning, the Army specialist whoserved seven years in prison for crimes related to leaking hundreds of thousands of military and diplomatic files to WikiLeaks, has been denied temporary entry to Canada, according to a letter she published on Twitter.

The letter appears to be the official Canadian denial of an application to visit the country. The letter states that Manning had sought tocross the border inSaint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Quebec.

Manning is deemed "inadmissible" due to Canadian law barring those "having been convicted of an offense outside Canada that, if committed in Canada, would ... [be]punishable by a maximum term of imprisonable of at least 10 years."

In subsequent tweets, Manning wrote that she would challenge the decision on the grounds that laws for which she was convicted were not sufficiently similar to Canadian treason laws.

Manning was imprisoned in 2010 after leaking more than 700,000 documents to WikiLeaks, including diplomatic cables, a video of an airstrike in Baghdad and other files. She was sentencedto 35 years in prisonbut granted clemency by President Obama in 2016.

Former acting CIA Director Michael Morell resigned his non-resident Senior Fellow position at Harvard on Thursday in protest of convicted military leaker Chelsea Manning joining the Kennedy Schools Institute of Politics.

The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University has named convicted felon and transgender activist Chelsea Manning as a visiting fellow at its Institute of Politics for the 2017-18 academic year.

Chelsea Manning went after MSNBC host Joy Reid on Tuesday for defending Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.) on Twitter.

When asked by a member of Ms. Mannings team why Mr. Spicer and Mr. Lewandowski were being endorsed, Mr. Elmendorf said that they had something to bring to the table, the source said.

The call lasted about 10 minutes; Ms. Mannings team left the conversation stunned and insulted.

The sudden turnabout by the school came after a day of intense backlash over the universitys announcement that Ms. Manning had been included. Mr. Elmendorf said that while the university encouraged a diversity of opinions and did not shy away from controversy, naming Ms. Manning a fellow was a mistake for which he accepted responsibility.

I see more clearly now that many people view a visiting fellow title as an honorific, so we should weigh that consideration when offering invitations, he wrote in a letter posted on the Harvard Kennedy School website early Friday morning, shortly after the phone call with Ms. Manning. I apologize to her and to the many concerned people from whom I have heard today for not recognizing upfront the full implications of our original invitation.

In his statement, Mr. Elmendorf said the university had extended the fellowship to Ms. Manning because she fit the schools tradition of asking influential people to address students.

After news that the invitation had been revoked became public, Ms. Manning tweeted that she was honored to be disinvited and that the institution was chilling marginalized voices under C.I.A. pressure.

In another tweet, she contrasted herself with Mr. Spicer and Mr. Lewandowski.

Chase Strangio, a lawyer for Ms. Manning, wrote in a statement that the decision to withdraw the invitation in the middle of the night without coherent explanation is disgraceful even for Harvard. He also accused the school of being beholden to the C.I.A.

The decision by the Kennedy School followed forceful denunciations by a former top official at the C.I.A. and the current director at the agency.

Michael J. Morell, a deputy director at the intelligence agency under President Barack Obama, resigned as a fellow on Thursday, calling the invitation to Ms. Manning wholly inappropriate. He said it honors a convicted felon and leaker of classified information.

It is my right, indeed my duty, to argue that the schools decision is wholly inappropriate and to protest it by resigning from the Kennedy School, Mr. Morell wrote to Mr. Elmendorf. The letter was obtained and reported on by CBS News, where Mr. Morell is a national security contributor.

Mr. Morell did not respond to an email Thursday night, and the Kennedy School did not respond to a request for comment.

Later on Thursday, the director of the C.I.A., Mike Pompeo, withdrew from a Harvard forum he was scheduled to participate in that night, citing Ms. Mannings fellowship as the reason.

Ms. Manning betrayed her country, Mr. Pompeo, who graduated from Harvard Law School, wrote in a letter to a Kennedy School official, adding that he commended Mr. Morells decision to resign.

He said that his withdrawal has everything to do with her identity as a traitor to the United States of America and my loyalty to the officers of the C.I.A.

Ms. Manning was convicted in 2010 for giving WikiLeaks hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic cables and military reports from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mr. Obama commuted her sentence in January as one of his final acts as president, and she was released in May.

Since 2013, Mr. Morell had served as a nonresident senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, which is also part of the Kennedy School. In his letter, Mr. Morell said he worried that Ms. Mannings actions would encourage others to leak classified information as well.

Manning wasone of fourvisiting fellows announced two days earlier by the Kennedy Schools Institute of Politics. As part of the program, visiting fellows appear on Harvards campus for speaking engagements and events,interacting with undergraduate students ontopical issues of today, the schools initial announcement explained.

Elmendorfdecided to withdrawthe invitation after realizing that many people view a Visiting Fellow title as an honorific, though the school had not intended to honor [Manning] in any way or to endorse any of her words or deeds.

Mannings website generates an automatic response to media requestsandindicates shes not giving interviews.

On Twitter, however, she accused the school of suppressing marginalized voices and caving to pressure from the CIA.

The deans decision came only hours after Pompeowithdrew froma planned appearance at the Kennedy Schooland chastised the institution for calling attention to Manning. In a biting letter to the events organizers, Pompeo, who earned a law degree from Harvard, brandedManning an American traitor whose actions and ethos contradicted the intelligence agencys most basic and sacred values.

Harvards actions, Pompeo added, implicitly tell its students that you too can be a fellow at Harvard and a felon under United States law. I believe it is shameful for Harvard to place its stamp of approval upon her treasonous actions.

Pompeos blustery withdrawal from Thursdays event joined a chorus of denunciationfrom national security experts, military veterans and others.

Earlier Thursday, in a stern letter of his own, Michael Morell, a former CIA leader who spent more than three decades at the agency, resigned from HarvardsBelfer Center for Science and International Affairs.He had been a fellow theresinceSeptember 2013. The schools invitation to Manning, Morell said, all but endorsed her decision to break the law.

I have an obligation to my conscience and I believe to the country to stand up against any efforts to justify leaks of sensitive national security information, wrote Morell, 59, who twice served as the CIAs acting directorand retired in 2013 as the agencys second-in-command.

Pompeopraised Morells decision to resign,writing in his letter that Harvard traded a respected individual who served his country with dignity for one who served it with disgrace.

Like the Obama administration, Trumps White House has struggled to curtail informationleaks.National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster issued a memothis month to leaders throughout the federal government, imploring them to conduct an hour-long training session next week. Pompeo, in particular,has prioritized this matter, calling it a leading reasonfor his decision to have the agencys Counterintelligence Mission Center report directly to him.

The Institute of Politics at Harvards Kennedy announced a broad range of visiting fellows for the 2017-2018 academic year, including Sean Spicer, President Trumps short-lived White House press secretary, and Corey Lewandowski, who was fired as Trumps campaign manager several months before the election.

Manning noted their participation shortly after Elmendorf, the dean, said he was withdrawing her invitation to serve as a visiting fellow.

In selecting Manning for a fellowship, Elmendorf said, Kennedy School officials felt they were keeping with the programs guiding objective, which is to expose students to individuals whose words or actions influence world events even if they do not share our values and even if their actions or words are abhorrent to some members of our community, he noted.

We do this not to endorse those actions or legitimize those words, but because engaging with people with fundamentally different worldviews can help us to become better public leaders, he wrote. Because controversy pervades many questions in politics and public policy, some speakers are controversial. While we do not shy away from that controversy, we insist that all speakers take questions, and these questions are often hard and challenging ones.

Hearing a very wide range of views, regardless of what members of our community think about the people offering those views, is fundamental to the learning process at the Kennedy School.

He added that I think we should weigh, for each potential visitor, what members of the Kennedy School community could learn from that persons visit against the extent to which that persons conduct fulfills the values of public service to which we aspire. This balance is not always easy to determine, and reasonable people can disagree about where to strike the balance for specific people. Any determination should start with the presumption that more speech is better than less.

In retrospect, though, I think my assessment of that balance for Chelsea Manning was wrong.

Harvard fellow and former congressman Jason Chaffetz said the deans decision to revoke Mannings invitation was the right call.

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who was in the same class offellows with Manning, expressed the same sentiment. Speaking on Fox News Fox and Friends Friday, he said that while there is a need for an open and honest discussion of ideas,it is quite another to take someone who has been a traitor to his country and invite them to be part of the process.

The schools initial announcement suggested Mannings advocacy on LGBT issues would be a focal point during her campus visit, and that discussions with students mightcenter onthe social challenges associated with being transgender in the military.

At Trumps direction, the Pentagon is studying how to implementhis ban on transgender men and women in the armed forces.In their letters, Pompeo and Morell specifically sought to distance themselves from any suggestion their decisions were motivated by Mannings choiceto become a woman or publicly discuss her crimes.

But it is my right, Morell added, indeed my duty, to argue that the Schools decision is wholly inappropriateand to protest it by resigning from the Kennedy School in order to make the point that leaking classified information is disgraceful and damaging to our nation.

On Friday night, in the middle of a hurricane, President Donald Trump pardoned Joe Arpaio, the Arizona sheriff who profiled Latinos and ignored a court order to stop.

It's nothing like what happened to Chelsea Manning, who spent seven years in prison for leaking classified documents and had the rest of her 35-year sentence commuted by President Obama in January.

Some people, however, were evidently using Obama's decision to commute Manning's sentence to justify Trump's decision to pardon Arpaio, who hasn't served any jail time for his conviction of criminal contempt or expressed any remorse for his history of racial profiling.

Manning quickly shut them down.

"Why does everyone insist on comparing my commutation with the pardon of some crooked cop?" she tweeted Friday night, shortly after Trump pardoned Arpaio.

Trump hinted that he might pardon Arpaio during his rally in Phoenix on Tuesday. In a tweet Friday night, the president called the sheriff an "American patriot."

Along with profiling Latinos, Arpaio was known for harsh, violent conditions in the jails he oversaw for over 20 years. He was also the sheriff who, you might remember, sent a member of his staff to Hawaii to look for Obama's birth certificate.

So it's not surprising Manning would immediately criticize those who compared his case with herswhere both the situation of the pardon and commutation were wildly different, as were reasons why both were convicted.

To Manning, beauty has a deeper meaning beyond lipgloss and eyeshadow. "I choose my lipstick colors carefully," she revealed in the essay. "I'm not just saying, 'I like this edgy color.' This is an expression of my humanity. And beauty, to me, is self-expression."

She continued, "Now that I'm out and free, I love experimenting with makeup. I use it to project different moods and emphasize what I'm trying to say in a particular moment."

Her fairly extensive daily makeup routine now involves playing with bold shades, for an important reason: "Most days I put on a liquid foundation, some powder for highlights, eyeliner, a mascara base, and mascara, with either a lipstick or gloss for the day. I'm wearing a lot of bold lipsticks, because I'm trying to make bold statements: I'm here and I'm free and I can do whatever I want."

She also reflected on her past, and how her story of being a transgender person in the military quickly gained media attention. "The first time the world saw me as I see me is that picture that went viral of me in the blond wig, which I sent to my superior," Manning wrote. "I took that picture for myself when I was on leave in January of 2010. I took it as a little memento of who I was at that moment. I never intended it to be shared with the world. When I look at that picture now, I see me but I see me in a phase of trying to figure myself out. I'm much closer to who I am today than I was in that photo. But it was a process to get here."

By the time I enrolled in the military at 20, I had spent years in denial about who I really was. I was openly gay and would go through periods of cross-dressing, and had even thought about transitioning, but I was in such complete denial. To overcompensate and because I was constantly being reminded of how inadequate I was as a male I enrolled in the military. My thought was, I must enlist and man up.

That thought really wears on you.

The one place I never felt at all comfortable in the military was in private circles of conversation. Theres a tendency, especially among young men, to objectify and denigrate women behind closed doors. Theyd say ridiculous, raunchy things about women call them sluts and whores, basically just treat them like objects. It was a line I just couldnt cross. Id try to avoid those kinds of macho conversations, because thats inevitably what would come up. Id get very, very distant.

That said, I loved my job and I took my military career very seriously. Theres this idea out there that, had I not been trans, the leaks and stuff would never have happened. But to my mind those are two completely separate things. Had I been out, I think I still would have been attracted to the military, but I would have been more comfortable and gotten along with people better. Being closeted often put me in situations where I couldnt concentrate or even think straight.

I loved my job, and had I been out, I think I would have been even better at it.

Now I try to be bold. I try to be myself. I really believe in this notion that we cant have anybody speak for us. But whats happened over the last 20 years is that the queer and trans community has depended on people who are not queer or trans to speak for us in places of power, whether thats a state legislature or a courtroom. We need to show up and speak for ourselves now more than ever.

People ask if Ill eventually run for office and be that voice, but the truth is Im not ready to make bigger decisions just yet. Right now Im just settling into my new apartment, Im watching theHandmaids Tale. Im not discounting any of the bigger things, but I need to buy a couch and a coffee table first.

Im also fine-tuning my style, perfecting my makeup skills. I suck at eyeshadow, and thats why I havent worn it, but Im watching YouTube videos and practicing. Im borrowing a lot of elements of punk and pop culture and incorporating a lot of the cyberpunk look. People tell me Im like the protagonist of a cyberpunk movie or something, so I may as well dress for it.

But heres the thing: Theres no public Chelsea and private Chelsea, theres just Chelsea. Im still the same person that Ive always been on the inside. Everything Ive gone through has just strengthened my sense of self and my sense of who I am. I cant pretend to be anyone else. I dont have a public persona. The person you see is the person I am.

While a lot has changed over the last seven years, for a tech savvy millennial like herself, the learning curve doesnt seem to be particularly steep. Shes already become a force to be reckoned with on Twitter, skillfully shutting down her many trolls and haters with a charming optimism and clear-eyed view of the realities and foibles of modern culture, buoying her supporters with her signature hashtag, #WeGotThis. And it seems that same no-nonsense approach to life extends to her personal wardrobe as well as Manning begins to define her sartorial aesthetic now that shes living as an out, trans woman, going shopping with Vogues Sally Singer and sharing a bit of her in-depth knowledge of fashion history in the process.

As it turns out, prior to her release, Manning was already in touch with the editors at Vogue, taking her own measurements with a makeshift tape measure composed of strips of 11-inch notebook paper and writing down detailed notes on her personal taste, telling Singer, jeans (boot cut, yes; acid wash, NO); denim (yes, but careful, its not the 90s); prints (its a matter of discretion . . . no animal print leggings, no puzzle pieces); shorts (not low around the hips and not high-rise like a lot of shorts are now); colors (yes to black, naturals, pinks, purple, blue; no to white, green, citrus, metallics, red); yes to pencil skirts, but no to minis or midis or anything longer than a cargo short.She also kept a folder of inspiration photos that largely featured professional looks in which a sharp-shouldered tailoring anchored flowy, distinctly feminine separates.

But despite providing the magazine with such a strict list of fashion guidelines, when out shopping Chelsea slowly realized that rules were meant to be broken, gravitating toward the unexpected, as Singer writes, Manning had professed a wariness of prints and volumes, yet she literally jumped for joy in a floral corset laced sundress with a tiered skirt by Rodarte because shes a video gamer at heart and it touched her inner Daenerys. But she still favors function over form, tending towards things with lots of pockets and secret places to put things; keep IDs, credit cards, thumb drives, steering clear of an 80s denim all-in-one, however, saying, Ive already worn a jumpsuit. Might be a sore subject for me.

In terms of fashion muses, she credits Queen Elizabeth I of England for being unquestionably feminine and unquestionably strong at the same time: She defeated the Spanish Armada! and Marie Antoinette who broke a lot of French high-fashion norms, though she admits she was, terrible in her politics. Since Mannings release from prison earlier this year after her sentence was commuted by then-President Obama, the activist has used her platform to draw attention to the injustices trans and gender-nonconforming people face in America. Most recently she slammed Trumps ban on transgender people in the military, calling the move cowardice.
