Artificial intelligence once relegated to academic studies and sci-fi nerds has become one of the hottest technologies, infiltrating every industry.

AI adoption was already accelerating before the COVID-19 crisis, but experts say that demand for AI tools is now is poised to grow even faster.

"The entire industry of AI is getting a huge boost from this unfortunate crisis," David Blumberg, founder and managing partner at Blumberg Capital, told Business Insider in May. "There is a silver lining to this dark cloud that we've all been living in for over two and a half, three months."

Former Cisco CEO John Chambers, who now runs his own venture firm JC2 Ventures, told Business Insider in an interview in May that he expects one to five major AI players to emerge from the current crisis.

AI has helped businesses take on big and small tasks, from making long-term sales growth projections to the automation of routine, time-consuming tasks.A 2019 Gartner survey found that major organizations planned to double their number of AI-related initiatives in the following year, from an average of 4 to 10. But as they pandemic has forced businesses to try to adapt to major changes, like the sudden pivot to remote work and tightening budgets, they're looking for ways to streamline and operate more efficiently.

"AI is best at solving all these really boring meat-and-potato problems," James Cham, a partner at Bloomberg Partners, told Business Insider. Many of the opportunities for using AI involve "straightforward process engineering," he said, where the technology can be used to shorten or streamline a process.

Industries like collaboration, shipping logistics, and manufacturing and warehousing will be particularly keen on using AI, said Sandeep Bhadra, a partner at Vertex Ventures.

Jake Saper at Emergence Capital had a similar prediction, that "vertical" specific AI software will be in more demand.

ABU DHABI, 15th June, 2020 (WAM) -- The UAE is constantly pushing the envelope as far as innovation and creativity are concerned, specially in the realm of Artificial Intelligence, AI, and automation.

"Robots, in fact, are increasingly becoming handy tools and great assistants for human beings in key services," noted UAE daily Gulf Today, before adding that "Emiratis are breaking new ground with their trailblazing creations that have captivated many people, regardless of their walks of life, particularly during coronavirus times."

It continued, "Recently, a young Emirati photographer and astrophotographer from Abu Dhabi tested a sterilisation robot in the emirate.

"Ateeq Alsuwaidi succeeded in developing the robot that could be used in the sterilisation drive to stem the spread of coronavirus in the country."

The paper further noted that a female Emirati student from the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Mohra Wessam Al Sayegh has invented a model for a spacecraft which uses steam energy to accelerate the launch process. "It takes advantage of the high temperatures of the spacecrafts internal engines while preparing for its launch. It produces a gas called hydroxy, which can be used to accelerate the spacecraft," the paper explained.

It added, "The student, who has specialised in aerospace engineering, said the speed of the spacecraft amounts to 2,900 km per hour, while its weight is approximately 2,200 tonnes, accommodating seven people, and carries about 2,200kg.

"A few days ago, Abu Dhabi Civil Defence General Authority used a remote control system, TAF35 Firefighting Robot, to control a fire.

"The authority explained that the robot pumps large quantities of water, from 1,500 litres to 4,500 litres per minute in the regular system and water spray system. It can also be used to pull weights up to 3.8 tonnes and is characterised by the presence of a bulldozer at the front.

"The first Emirati humanoid robots Samit and Sidra were launched at Gitex last year. The launch of the two robots came in conjunction with UAEs vision for the year 2031.

"The main purpose of the two robots is to provide assistance, interact with clients, and accomplish daily tasks without any human interference."

The paper went on to note that three years ago, Dubai Police welcomed a new member on to its force, the worlds first operational robot policeman. "He doesnt need a visa, medical insurance or hours of training, and he is ready to engage with Dubais residents and millions of tourists across the citys streets."

"It is these inventions that pitchfork the UAE into the frontline of global technological brilliance," the editorial said. "The robots, programmed by Artificial Intelligence, will interact with and evaluate satisfaction of clients through provided services," it further noted.

"The influence of AI and smart services has increased around the world while robots, drones and electronic services have become key global tools for controlling the emergence of coronavirus, COVID-19, and preventing its spread.

"The UAE has developed an integrated system of electronic and smart services, which has reduced the number of required auditors and physical customers of relevant authorities," the Sharjah-based paper added.

The paper concluded, "The UAEs electronic services system has also carved a trailblazing path. It is one of the best in the region, providing leading services, such as clearing government and private transactions, banking services and electronic shopping. This system has played a key role in reducing waiting lines and assisting various government and private entities.

"At the root of this remarkable electronic headway is the thirst for exploring new and uncharted terrain in the field of science and technology. The UAE seeks to map the space frontier with its ambitious Hope Probe. Understanding the Four Types of Artificial Intelligence

The common, and recurring, view of the latest breakthroughs in artificial intelligence research is that sentient and intelligent machines are just on the horizon. Machines understand verbal commands, distinguish pictures, drive cars and play games better than we do. How much longer can it be before they walk among us?

The new White House report on artificial intelligence takes an appropriately skeptical view of that dream. It says the next 20 years likely wont see machines exhibit broadly-applicable intelligence comparable to or exceeding that of humans, though it does go on to say that in the coming years, machines will reach and exceed human performance on more and more tasks. But its assumptions about how those capabilities will develop missed some important points.

As an AI researcher, Ill admit it was nice to have my own field highlighted at the highest level of American government, but the report focused almost exclusively on what I call the boring kind of AI. It dismissed in half a sentence my branch of AI research, into how evolution can help develop ever-improving AI systems, and how computational models can help us understand how our human intelligence evolved.

The report focuses on what might be called mainstream AI tools: machine learning and deep learning. These are the sorts of technologies that have been able to play Jeopardy! well, and beat human Go masters at the most complicated game ever invented. These current intelligent systems are able to handle huge amounts of data and make complex calculations very quickly. But they lack an element that will be key to building the sentient machines we picture having in the future.

We need to do more than teach machines to learn. We need to overcome the boundaries that define the four different types of artificial intelligence, the barriers that separate machines from us and us from them.

There are four types of artificial intelligence: reactive machines, limited memory, theory of mind and self-awareness.

The most basic types of AI systems are purely reactive, and have the ability neither to form memories nor to use past experiences to inform current decisions. Deep Blue, IBMs chess-playing supercomputer, which beat international grandmaster Garry Kasparov in the late 1990s, is the perfect example of this type of machine.

Deep Blue can identify the pieces on a chess board and know how each moves. It can make predictions about what moves might be next for it and its opponent. And it can choose the most optimal moves from among the possibilities.

But it doesnt have any concept of the past, nor any memory of what has happened before. Apart from a rarely used chess-specific rule against repeating the same move three times, Deep Blue ignores everything before the present moment. All it does is look at the pieces on the chess board as it stands right now, and choose from possible next moves.

This type of intelligence involves the computer perceiving the world directly and acting on what it sees. It doesnt rely on an internal concept of the world. In a seminal paper, AI researcher Rodney Brooks argued that we should only build machines like this. His main reason was that people are not very good at programming accurate simulated worlds for computers to use, what is called in AI scholarship a representation of the world.

The current intelligent machines we marvel at either have no such concept of the world, or have a very limited and specialized one for its particular duties. The innovation in Deep Blues design was not to broaden the range of possible movies the computer considered. Rather, the developers found a way to narrow its view, to stop pursuing some potential future moves, based on how it rated their outcome. Without this ability, Deep Blue would have needed to be an even more powerful computer to actually beat Kasparov.

Similarly, Googles AlphaGo, which has beaten top human Go experts, cant evaluate all potential future moves either. Its analysis method is more sophisticated than Deep Blues, using a neural network to evaluate game developments.

These methods do improve the ability of AI systems to play specific games better, but they cant be easily changed or applied to other situations. These computerized imaginations have no concept of the wider world meaning they cant function beyond the specific tasks theyre assigned and are easily fooled.

They cant interactively participate in the world, the way we imagine AI systems one day might. Instead, these machines will behave exactly the same way every time they encounter the same situation. This can be very good for ensuring an AI system is trustworthy: You want your autonomous car to be a reliable driver. But its bad if we want machines to truly engage with, and respond to, the world. These simplest AI systems wont ever be bored, or interested, or sad.

This Type II class contains machines can look into the past. Self-driving cars do some of this already. For example, they observe other cars speed and direction. That cant be done in a just one moment, but rather requires identifying specific objects and monitoring them over time.

These observations are added to the self-driving cars preprogrammed representations of the world, which also include lane markings, traffic lights and other important elements, like curves in the road. Theyre included when the car decides when to change lanes, to avoid cutting off another driver or being hit by a nearby car.

But these simple pieces of information about the past are only transient. They arent saved as part of the cars library of experience it can learn from, the way human drivers compile experience over years behind the wheel.

So how can we build AI systems that build full representations, remember their experiences and learn how to handle new situations? Brooks was right in that it is very difficult to do this. My own research into methods inspired by Darwinian evolution can start to make up for human shortcomings by letting the machines build their own representations.

We might stop here, and call this point the important divide between the machines we have and the machines we will build in the future. However, it is better to be more specific to discuss the types of representations machines need to form, and what they need to be about.

Machines in the next, more advanced, class not only form representations about the world, but also about other agents or entities in the world. In psychology, this is called theory of mind the understanding that people, creatures and objects in the world can have thoughts and emotions that affect their own behavior.

This is crucial to how we humans formed societies, because they allowed us to have social interactions. Without understanding each others motives and intentions, and without taking into account what somebody else knows either about me or the environment, working together is at best difficult, at worst impossible.

If AI systems are indeed ever to walk among us, theyll have to be able to understand that each of us has thoughts and feelings and expectations for how well be treated. And theyll have to adjust their behavior accordingly.

The final step of AI development is to build systems that can form representations about themselves. Ultimately, we AI researchers will have to not only understand consciousness, but build machines that have it.

This is, in a sense, an extension of the theory of mind possessed by Type III artificial intelligences. Consciousness is also called self-awareness for a reason. (I want that item is a very different statement from I know I want that item.) Conscious beings are aware of themselves, know about their internal states, and are able to predict feelings of others. We assume someone honking behind us in traffic is angry or impatient, because thats how we feel when we honk at others. Without a theory of mind, we could not make those sorts of inferences.

While we are probably far from creating machines that are self-aware, we should focus our efforts toward understanding memory, learning and the ability to base decisions on past experiences. This is an important step to understand human intelligence on its own. And it is crucial if we want to design or evolve machines that are more than exceptional at classifying what they see in front of them.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been described as the fourth industrial revolution. It will transform all of our jobs and lives over the next 10 years. However, it is not a new concept. AIs roots are in the expert systems of the 70s and 80s, computers that were programmed with a humans expert knowledge in order to allow decision-making based on the available facts.

Whats different today, and is enabling this revolution, is the evolution of machine learning systems. No longer are machines just capturing explicit knowledge (where a human can explain a series of fairly logical steps). They are now developing a tacit knowledge the intuitive, know-how embedded in the human mind. The kind of knowledge thats hard to describe, let alone transfer.

Machine learning is already all around us, unlocking our phones with a glance or a touch, suggesting music we like to listen to, and teaching cars to drive themselves.

Underpinning all this is the explosion of data. Data is growing faster than ever before. By the year 2020, its estimated that every human being on the planet will be creating 1.7 megabytes of new information every second! There will be 50 billion smart connected devices in the world, all developed to collect, analyse and share data. This data is vital to AI. Machine learning models need data Just as we humans learn our tacit knowledge through our experiences, by attempting a task again and again to gradually improve, ML models need to be trained.

AI is a journey. And the journey to AI starts with the basics of identifying and understanding the data. Where does it reside? How can we access it? We need strong information architecture as the first step on our AI ladder.

Of course, some data may be difficult it might be unstructured, it may need refinement, it could be in disparate locations and from different sources. So, the next step is to fuse together this data in order to allow analytics tools to find better insight.

The next step in the journey is identifying and understanding the patterns and trends in our data with smart analytics techniques.

Only once these steps of the journey have been completed can we truly progress to AI and machine learning, to gain further insight into the past and future performance of our organisations, and to help us solve business problems more efficiently.

But once that journey is complete the architecture, the data fusion, the analytics solutions the limits of possibility are only contained by the availability of data. So lets look at some examples where were already using these techniques.

Lets take an example that is applicable to most organisations the management of people. Businesses can fuse employee and payroll data, absence records, training records, performance ratings and more to give a complete picture of an employees interaction with the organisation. Managers can instantly visualise how people are performing, and which areas to focus on for improvement. The next stage is to use AI models to predict those employees who might need some extra support or intervention high-performers at risk of leaving, or people showing early signs of declining performance.

But what about when you focus instead on the customer? Satisfaction, retention, and interaction increasingly businesses look to social media to track the sentiment and engagement of their relationships with customers and consumers. Yet finding meaningful patterns and insights amongst a continual flow of diverse data can be difficult.

Social media analytics solutions can be used to analyse how customers and consumers view and react to the companies and brands theyre interacting with through social media.

The data is external to the organisations concerned but is interpreted to create an information architecture behind the scenes. The next stop on the AI journey enables powerful analysis of trends and consumer behaviour over time, allowing organisations to track and forecast customer engagement in real-time.

Social media data isnt the only source of real time engagement. Customer data is an increasingly rich vein that can be tapped into. Disney is already collecting location data from wristbands at their attractions, predicting and managing queue lengths (suggesting other rides with shorted queues, or offering food/drink vouchers in busy times to reduced demand). Infrared cameras are even watching people in movie theatres and monitoring eye movements and facial expressions to determine engagement and sentiment.

The ability to analyse increasingly creative and diverse data sources to unearth new insights is growing, but the ability to bring together these new, disparate data sources is key to realising their value.

There are huge opportunities around the sharing and fusion of data, in particular between different agencies (local government, health, police). But this comes with significant challenges around privacy, data protection and a growing public concern.

The next step is to predict the future when and where crime is likely to happen, or the risk or vulnerability of individuals, allowing the police to direct limited resources as efficiently as possible. Machine learning algorithms can be employed in a variety of ways to automate facial recognition, to pinpoint crime hotspots, and to identify which people are more likely to reoffend.

AI models are good at learning to recognise patterns. And these patterns arent just found in images, but in sound too. Models already exist that can listen to the sounds within a city, and detect the sound of a gunshot a large proportion of which go unreported. Now lamppost manufacturers are building smart street lights, which monitor light, sound, weather and other environmental variants. By introducing new AI models, could we allow them to detect gunshots at scale, helping police to respond quickly and instantly when a crime is underway?

However, there is one underlying factor that occurs across every innovative solution now, and in the future. Data quality. IBM has just launched an AI tool deigned to monitor artificial intelligence deployments, and assess accuracy, fairness and bias in the decisions that they make. In short, AI models monitoring other AI models.

Lets just hope that the data foundation that these are built on is correct at the end of the day, if the underlying data is flawed, then so will be the AI model, and so will be the AI monitoring the AI! And thats why the journey to advanced analytics, AI and machine learning is so important. Building a strong information architecture, investing in intelligent data fusion and creating a solid analytics foundation is vital to the success of future endeavours in data.
