HUNDREDS of US Army Helicopters have arrived in Germany as a giant multinational army prepares to defend the continent from a Russian invasion.

Dozens of Chinook, Apache and Black Hawk choppers were unloaded in the German port city of Bremerhaven joining an already massive US presence in Europe.

It comes as NATO continues to beef up its presence in Eastern Europe to fight against what it calls the "Russian threat".

It was confirmed that a total of 24 Boeing AH-64D Apache and 94 Chinook and Black Hawk helicopters touched down yesterday, along with 350 vehicles and 1,800 personnel from the New York-based 10th Combat Aviation Brigade.

Major General Duane Gamble, the Commander of the 21st Theatre Sustainment Command, said: Today, we are downloading a portion of the combat aviation brigade and it will be moved to Germany and Eastern Europe and will be scattered between Latvia and Romania, while a big chunk of it will be stationed in Germany."

The deployment marks a further stage in Operation Atlantic Resolve, which was launched in the wake of the Ukraine-Crimea crisis in 2014.

Just last week, Vladimir Putin warned his country to prepare for a "time of war".

The Russian President ordered a "snap check" of armed forces to ensure his military is able to fight enemies immediately.
