Card 5 The Hierophant
Today, Day 6, we visit The Hierophant, or High Priest (or Pope), card #5. He #39;s the male counterpart to the High Priestess - who represents a personal, mystical experience of the Divine. The Hierophant represents the public and communal forms of spirituality, and the transmission of knowledge and practices created as social institutions or resources to help guide and direct us on our path. The Hierophant is Community, structured to serve a spiritual, educational, moral, or otherwise helpful purpose. He encompasses institutions and organizations (like a church or ashram or school) that serve to direct and teach; all contracts (including marriage!), conventions, social mores; and He also represents books and oral traditions that pass down knowledge, practices, and spiritual and moral values. Perhaps this sounds "boring," but the Hierophant provides us with a remarkably useful tool - a "hook" upon which we can safely and usefully hang our hopes and aspirations.
