Charles Clarke is a Consultant Neurologist and has interests in high altitude medicine and cold injury. He has been in consultant practice since 1979, initially at St Bartholomew #39;s Hospital, London where he became Clinical Director of Neurosciences, and later at the National Hospital for Neurology Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London where he is an Honorary Consultant Neurologist. He worked single-handedly at Whipps Cross Hospital from 1981 and earlier at Basildon and Orsett Hospitals. He retired from the NHS in 2006 but remains in active clinical practice. He initiated, edited and produced with three National Hospital colleagues Neurology: A Queen Square Textbook (Wiley Blackwell 2009). He has a longstanding interest in mountaineering, expeditions to remote areas and high altitude and has run an international information service for altitude medical problems and cold injury since 1982. He was elected President of the British Mountaineering Council in 2006, an organization representing some 70000 members.
