10/23/2012 NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00): Perspectives from Awardees
On Tuesday, October 23, 2012, Duke Postdoctoral Services and the Duke Office for Faculty Mentoring held a panel discussion on the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00). The NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00) is designed to help postdocs transition from a mentored postdoctoral research position to a stable independent research position at an earlier stage than is currently the norm. The award provides up to 5 years of support consisting of two phases: 1-2 years of mentored support for postdoctoral research scientists, followed by up to 3 years of independent support contingent on securing an independent tenure-track or equivalent research position. The K99/R00 award is open to both US citizens and non-US citizens. The panel was made up of Duke postdocs and faculty who have successfully applied for the prestigious NIH K99/R00 Award. Panelists discussed their personal experiences applying for a K99, the K99 awards process, transitioning from the K phase to the R phase (including how the award impacted their faculty job search), and tips for success (or failure and then success, in the case of those who applied more than once!).
