UC Riverside trying again for medical school

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - The University of California, Riverside, is making a second bid for a 4-year medical school, saying it has obtained alternative financial backing worth about $10 million a year for a decade.

The university has operated a joint medical school program with UCLA for three decades. Its 25 students spend their first two years in Riverside and finish at UCLA.

The state refused to pay for a full medical school last year and it was denied national accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.

The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/NCpolL ) says school officials have now secured the $10 million-a-year alternative financing from private donors, local government and the UC system in hopes its first 50 students can enroll in fall 2013.
