Are There Any Disadvantages To Taking Herbal Supplements?
In this 2010 interview, integrative medicine practitioner Dr. Graeme Shaw MD was asked if there are any disadvantages to taking herbal supplements. He replied "While herbs are natural food supplements, there still can be disadvantages of using herbal dietary supplements due to the laxative effects of some herbs as well as the possibility of a small percent of individuals having food sensitivities. Also, since herbs may support the natural and healthy detoxification pathways within a person #39;s body, the body can often begin to release previously stored toxins from the tissue of the body. Detoxification occurs within the body when the body eliminates toxins such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or stored chemicals like pesticides, prescription drugs, food additives, or heavy metals. While detoxification is generally a good thing, when the body detoxifies too fast, the body can cause unwanted symptoms including diarrhea, constipation, skin rash or flu-like symptoms. These symptoms from toxins being eliminated can be decreased or eliminated by either beginning any herbal product slowly and/or drinking more clean water during this process. I have found that the best way to prevent any possible disadvantages accompanying the use of herbal supplements is to always begin any herbal product slowly by taking less than the suggested usage printed on the bottle.
