The Soulsword was created by Magik while the young mutant was trapped in Limbo. Using her own life force to empower the spell, Illyana was able to manifest the sword from her own spirit. While the sword was introduced as a simple blade, the design of the weapon shifts and becomes more intricate and powerful with each use. The blade will also sometimes create a magical armor around the user when they need it.

The sword also technically comes with sovereignty over the demonic realm, Limbo. The sword can be used as a typical weapon, but it can also be used to sever and destroy magical spells. After the death of Illyana, the sword traded hands multiple times -- ending up briefly in the respective hands of Shadowcat, Nightcrawler and Amanda Sefton -- before Illyana was restored to life following the events of X-Infernus and reclaimed it.

Katana is a gifted warrior in many respects, and she's accordingly adept with numerous weapons. However, her greatest skills like with the Soultaker Sword. In the Post-CrisisDC Universe, the blade was forged by the 14th-century swordmaster, Muramasa. The sword is exceptionally sharp, capable of even slicing through otherwise durable substances. However, the most fearsome aspect of the Soul Sword is its capability to absorb the souls of the people it kills and traps them within itself.

The wielder of the blade can then force the spirits to serve them, even against their will. In the post-Flashpoint version of the DC Universe, this includes Katana's dead husband, and Katana speaks to his spirit through the blade. The sword is also suggested to be the Sword Totem, which means the blade can also potentially give the wielder immortality.

Both the Soulsword and the Soultaker come with unique attributes that make them fearsome tools in the right hands. But they also come with unique powers that make them specifically more potent against other specific foes. Both blades are shown being capable of slicing through most elements, which makes them useful in most situations. However, the Soultaker is better suited to contend with enemies who possess souls, thus allowing Katana to kill them and use their spirits as her servants. Meanwhile, the Soulsword is shown to be more versatile in slicing through magical enchantments and spells. This means the Soulsword could be used in more intense moments, especially when confronted with magical threats.

Another element that makes the Soulsword particularly powerful is the power it gives the user over the realm of Limbo. Once taking the blade, owners are able to use the sword to command the various beings of the hellish realm. This gives the owner a veritable army of demonic figures at their beck and call. Even villains like Doctor Doom have done everything they could to claim the sword and take control of Limbo for themselves, which hints at the potential power that control could afford. So while the Soulsword might be an effective tool to bring down human foes, the pure power and versatility of the Soulsword make it a considerably more impressive weapon.
