Trained as a paediatrician, he then chose to become a researcher to study the mechanisms of genetic diseases, in particular those of the eyes and the metabolism. After spending a number of years as a researcher in the United States, he returned to Italy in 2002 and now coordinates a research group of about 15 people. He is also an associate professor of medical genetics at the Department of Paediatrics at the "Federico II" University in Naples and in 2007 was made a "Knight of the Republic" by President Giorgio Napolitano.
