Comets lose final game

Scrantons defense limited Abington Heights to 65 yards of total offense and Jacob Watts scored two touchdowns to lead the Knights to a 16-3 win over the Comets in a Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 game at Scranton Memorial Stadium on Friday.

This was one of our better defensive games, said Scranton head coach Mike Marichak. We had a couple shutouts, but tonight I thought we put some pressure on the quarterback and they couldnt run the ball. I think, upfront, we did a nice job.

Scranton kicker Alvaro Fernandez capped a 9-play, 63-yard drive with a 28-yard field goal to give the Knights a 3-0 lead with 7:04 left in the first quarter.

Comets kicker Colin McCreary tied the game, 3-3, with a 24-yard field goal to cap a 4-play, 16-yard drive with 9:50 remaining in the second quarter. Sam Radkiewiczs 34 yard punt return helped set up the score.

An interception by defensive back Damel Wright set the Knights up at the Comets 25-yard line with 7:05 left in the second quarter, but three consecutive stops for losses, including a sack by Joe Arcangelo on fourth down, ended Scrantons scoring threat.

Scranton (7-3, 6-1 LFC Div. 1) had another scoring opportunity stopped by the Comets when defensive back Jake Henzes intercepted Scranton quarterback Anthony Tooson at the Comets 25-yard line with 1:20 remaining in the first half.

Scranton regained the lead when Watts ended an 11-play, 81-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 11:25 left in the fourth quarter. Tooson connected with Dylan Granahan for 18 yards on a 3rd-and-10 play from the 19 to set up the score. Fernandezs extra point made the score 10-3.

Abington Heights (4-6, 2-5) linebacker Collin Huggler intercepted Tooson on the Knights next drive and returned the ball into Scranton territory, but the Comets couldnt convert the turnover into points.

Im extremely proud of these players, Abington Heights head coach Joe Repshis said. They have been resilient all year.

After an interception by Knights defensive back Ramon Fields, Watts carried the ball all seven plays of Scrantons 50-yard drive and scored his second touchdown on a 3-yard run to stretch the lead to 16-3 with 2:48 remaining in the game.
