Comets fall to Rampage in shootout

SAN ANTONIO, Texas The Utica Comets poured on the pucks at the San Antonio Rampages net all night, but goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped all but two of the Comets 36 shots, including all five during a shootout, to lead his team to a 3-2 victory on Monday night.

The Rampage tallied back-to-back goals in the first period to jump to a 2-0 advantage off the sticks of Quinton Howden and Jared Gomes, before the Comets jumped on the scoreboard 16:22 into the game.

Markstrom turned aside Benn Ferrieros shot off the rebound, but Nicklas Jensens follow up was too much to stop.

The game would remain locked at 2-1 until 13:21 of the third period with the Comets firing an onslaught of shots, including a 10-0 advantage to open the period until Jensen found the back of the net again.

Kent Huskins blasted a knuckling shot on net, Markstrom saved the initial shot, but Jensen was there to tuck in the rebound. Henrik Tommernes picked up the secondary assist. The goal was Nicklas Jensens fifth goal in four games.

San Antonios Bobby Butler was the shootouts lone scorer, as he fired a wrist shot past the blocker of Comets goaltender Mathieu Corbeil in the third round of the shootout.

Corbeil stopped 21 of 23 shots in his first career American Hockey League start.

The Comets wrapped up their road trip with a 0-1-1-1 record and fell to 11-19-2-3 on the season. They return home to take on the Albany Devils Friday night at The Aud at 7 p.m.
