Comets End Regular Season on Five Game Winning Streak

March 2, 2014 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Missouri Comets MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (March 2, 2014) - The Missouri Comets ended the regular season facing the same team that they began the season with. The Wave were able to claim victory, but the Comets have won four of the five matchups since then, including this afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The two highest scoring teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) played a defensive battle in front of 4,552 fans with the Comets coming out on top with a 9-4 victory.

Coming into today's match, the Missouri Comets and the Milwaukee Wave had each scored 320 points, more than any other team in the MISL. Knowing the offensive explosiveness that these two teams are capable of, both head coaches played a decisively defensive strategy. The result was the lowest scoring output in a win for the Comets all season.

Lucas Rodriguez scored the only goal of the opening quarter with two minutes remaining in the period. One of the newest Comets, Max Touloute sent a pass along the wall that bounced off the corner and into the middle of the box where Rodriguez was waiting to strike.

Bryan Perez extended the Comets lead to 4-0 in the second quarter before Milwaukee's Nic Perera got the Wave on the board with ten minutes remaining in the half.

The Comets held a 4-2 lead going into the break, in no small part, thanks to the play of goalkeeper Danny Waltman and his defense. Waltman faced 19 shots on goal and his defense blocked another 11 shots in the win. In the past eight quarters he's played, Waltman has only surrendered four goals.

Making his return to the lineup after missing the last four games due to injury, Vahid Assadpour notched the only score of the third quarter. John Sosa lined up on a restart opportunity, after faking right he quickly passed to an open Assadpour on the left side to put Missouri up 6-2.

As the fourth quarter began and the time for Milwaukee to mount a comeback decreased, the Wave increased their pressure on the Comets. Marcelo Fontana collected a bouncing pass into the middle of the box and brought his team within two points of tying the score. Unflustered, the Missouri defense stood tall and waited for their opportunity. Lucas Rodriguez jumped in front of a Fontana pass midway through the period and buried a shot to the right top corner of the goal. His goal increased the lead to 9-4, the score that would hold for a final.

The win was Missouri's 14th of the season and gave them a 4-2 series victory over their rivals from Milwaukee. The Wave finish with a record of 16-4; with all four losses coming against the Comets. These two teams will now face off for the fourth straight year in the 2014 MISL Playoffs.
