Big win for the boys

The Comets were on fire, and Brett Becker's four three-point baskets in the first quarter helped bury the Tipton Tigers Jan. 9 at West Liberty. The Comets won 62-30.

Three Comets were in double figures: Becker scored 24 points, Kyle Miller 14 points and Troy Heick had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

"I thought we played well offensively," West Liberty Head Coach James Laughlin said. "Brett Becker came out shooting the ball well, and it was contagious for us. I think this helped us with some energy on the defensive end and led to some steals with easy baskets on the other end. We gave up too many offensive rebounds; that is something we will need to continue to work on."

First Quarter

Heick's tip to start the game went to Miller. Becker hit his first three-pointer just eight seconds into the game for a 3-0 West Liberty lead.

The Tigers turned the ball over, and Becker scored on a turnaround jumper. The Tigers got two tries at a basket and then got fouled. They made both free throws for a 5-2 score.

Brady Smith scored in the paint, assist Miller. Heick got a steal, but the Comets turned the ball over. Each team got a defensive rebound, then the Tigers were fouled. They missed both free throws, and Heick got the rebound.

Miller was fouled on a shot. He made the second of two free throws. Tipton turned the ball over and Miller scored, assist Becker. Heick got a defensive rebound and Miller made a layup for a 12-2 West Liberty lead with 4:42 left in the first quarter.

Tipton took a time out. Anderson tipped the inbounds pass to Becker, but the Tigers got a defensive rebound. Tipton was fouled on a shot and made both free throws. Each team turned the ball over, then Heick scored in the paint.

Ryan Alpen picked up a loose ball, then the Tigers got a rebound. Heick got a block and Tipton was fouled on a shot. The Tigers made the first free throw and missed the second. Luke Seele got the rebound and Becker hit a three-point basket with 2:51 on the clock for a 17-5 lead.
