Lions edge Comets on the mat

Lackawanna Trail defeated Abington Heights, 34-30, in a nonleague wrestling match on Jan. 28 in South Abington Twp. T0m Kohinsky (126) and Tyler Baltrusaitis (145) won by pin for the Lions. DJ Klinges (160) won by major decision, Rocco Pacini (170) and Nathaniel Barbolish (220) won by decision and Trent Ashley (138) and Jordan Hannon (285) won by forfeit. Jimmy Fayocavitz (132), Nick Carr (152) and Anthony Sylvester (195) won by pin for the Comets. Luke Fayocavitz (113) and Zach Spangenberg (182) won by decision and Noah Sirianni (106) won by forfeit.

Cavs, Classics victorious in the pool

The Scranton Prep boys swim team defeated Elk Lake, 110-56, in a Lackawanna League meet on Jan. 27 at The University of Scranton. Joe Kyle Bushta had wins in the 200 free and 100 back. Tom Pfaeffle won the 200 individual medley, Nico Lastauskas had wins in the 50 free and 500 free, Ryan Sebastianelli placed first in the 100 free and Ben Evans won the 100 breast. The Prep 200 medley (Sebastianelli, Lastauskas, Bushta and Richie Holden), 200 free (Conor McCall, Mike Terrery, Mike Robinson, and Sebastianelli), and 400 free (Lastauskas, Pfaeffle, Holden and Ryan Powell) teams also placed first.

The Scranton Prep girls swim team downed Elk Lake, 88-73. Cat Donlon had wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 fly, Katie Voitik placed first in the 100 free and 100 breast. The Classics also placed first in the 200 medley (Emily Donlon, Cat Donlon, Lauren Lanzendorfer and Catherine Dipaolo), 200 free (Cat Donlon, Mariah Leontopoulou-Cochran, Voitik and Audrey Campo), and 400 free (Voitik, Campo, Emily Donlon Lanzendorfer) relay events.

Comets, Lady Comets swim past West

The Abington Heights boys swim team defeated West Scranton, 123-57, in a Lackawanna League meet on Jan. 27 in South Abington Twp. Ben Vale had wins in the 500 free and 100 breast, Shane Cummings places first in the 200 free, DJ Weiland won the 200 individual medley, Max Voyce placed first in the 100 fly, Noah Shapiro won the 100 free and Sam Jubon placed first in the 100 back. The 200 medley (Brendan Conahan, Shapiro, Voyce0 and Andrew Barren) 200 free (Barren, Jubon, Cummings and Shapiro), and 4o0 free (Chris Suh, Barren, Shapiro and Vale) teams also had wins.

The Abington Heights girls swim team downed West Scranton, 139-39. Danielle Sanok had wins in the 200 individual medley and 100 breast, Catherine Simakaski placed first in the 200 free, Hannah Conahan won the 50 free, Rachel Smertz placed first in the 100 fly, Kelsey Jackson won the 100 free, Leah Byman placed first in the 500 free and April Sokalsky won the 100 back. The Lady Comets also placed first in the200 medley (Smertz, Laura Hartman, Byman Sydney Gualtieri), 200 free (Hartman, Gualtieri, Byman, Smertz), and 400 free (Smertz, Hartman, Gualtieri Byman) relay events.

Comets top Cougars, rout Buckhorns on the court

Clay Basalyga scored a game-high 13 points to lead Abington Heights to a 49-33 win over Valley View in a Lackawanna League Division 1 boys basketball game on Jan. 27 in Archbald. Jordan Hollander and Tim Toro each added nine for the Comets.
