‘Tipping point for NUCLEAR WAR’ North Korea threatens to spark WW3 after US bombing drill – Express.co.uk

The hermit state reacted furiously after two US supersonic bombers performed live-fire drills in South Korea in a show of military strength.

State-run newspaper Rodong newspaper described the region as the "world's biggest tinderbox" and warned: "Don't play with fire on a powder keg."

Yesterday's drill was designed to "sternly respond" to recent missile launches by North Korea.

But the propaganda rag branded it a "dangerous military gambit of warmongers who are trying to ignite the fuse of a nuclear war on the peninsula".

It added: "The US, with its dangerous military provocation, is pushing the risk of a nuclear war on the peninsula to a tipping point.

"A small misjudgment or error can immediately lead to the beginning of a nuclear war, which will inevitably lead to another world war."

Donald Trump's administration and the North's regime under leader Kim Jong-un have exchanged hostile rhetoric for months.

Tension further escalated after North Korea's test-launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) last week.

The North has staged five nuclear tests and has made a significant progress in its missile capability under Kim, who took power in 2011.

Mr Trump yesterday told Chinese President Xi Jinping that the United States will stop North Korea "one way or the other".

He said: "I appreciate the things that you have done relative to the very substantial problem that we all face in North Korea, a problem that something has to be done about.

"It may take longer than I'd like, it may take longer than you'd like. But there will be success in the end one way or the other."

Trump warns US is planning ‘severe things’ for Kim Jong-un when WW3 breaks out – Daily Star

DONALD Trump has threatened North Korean despot Kim Jong-un with pretty severe things if he continues with his deadly nuke programme.

GETTY

The President lashed out at Kim in a heated rant following the tyrants successful ICBM test this week.

North Koreas missile launch saw their dreaded ICBM fly into the Sea of Japan, after being in the air for more than half an hour.

And Trump was quick to hit back with his own massive military exercises in South Korea as a show of force to the rotund ruler.

Tensions on the Korean peninsular have reached an all time high as US and South Korean forces launched a drill which saw them fire off missiles in response to Kim Jong-un's successful test of an ICBM

"I have some pretty severe things that we're thinking about, Trump said in a statement on Thursday.

That doesn't mean we're going to do them. I don't draw red lines.

He added the North is "behaving in a very, very dangerous manner and something will have to be done about it."

Serious concerns have been raised by the international community about North Koreas missile programme.

It is believed Kim's new missile could obliterate a major US city, with an estimated range of around 6,700 km (4,160 miles).

A US Defence Department spokesman, Captain Jeff Davis, said the US had not seen a missile like the tubby tyrant's latest deadly ICBM.

While Commander of US forces in Korea, Gen Vincent K Brooks, said: "As the combined live fire demonstrated, we may make resolute decisions any time, if the alliance commanders-in-chief order it.

"Whoever thinks differently is making a serious misjudgement."

REVEALED: Nuke bunkers in UK that YOU could hide in if WW3 explodes – Daily Star

MILLION pound nuclear shelters are lying underneath our feet in Britain ready and waiting for World War 3 and the Daily Star Online can reveal exactly where they are.

The threat of a nuke war involving North Korea is higher than ever before after its tyrant leader Kim Jong-un tested his first intercontinental ballistic missile this week.

So if and when the time comes, and the UK finds itself in the firing line, thousands of Brits will be desperately cramming into nuclear fallout shelters across the country.

But the bad news is the numbers of active shelters fall into just single figures. And worse still, one of the just four shelters Daily Star Online have come across will only be reserved for the Prime Minister.

A cold war expert also revealed to us there are many more shelters across Britain that are being kept hidden from society, and has revealed some of their secret locations.

And on top of all of that, despite the already little protection, Nick Catford, the author of Cold War Bunkers, has a chilling warning for Daily Star Online readers: We are not prepared for a nuclear war.

GETTY

Tubby tyrant Kim Jong-un gloats as the world reacts to the news of his successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile. As Trump took to Twitter to slam the secretive state, the world watches in fear: is this how WW3 starts?

1 / 17

Kim Jong-un watches as the missile launches

The country currently houses four known nuke bunkers, but once was a hotbed for dozens of them which were built for the Cold War, before being turned into museums, sold off, or simply decommissioned.

Heres a list of the shelters as listed by Civil Defence Today:

DS

Widen the net and include decommissioned and transformed bunkers, then these 14 shelters would have once been our getaway locations:

GETTY

Photographs have emerged of a forgotten Cold War bunker - complete with fascinating instructions of what to do in event of a nuclear attack. The hidden relic deep in the heart of the East Anglian countryside was built in 1958 when tensions between the West and the Soviet Union were growing towards their height.

1 / 11

Although the public could flee into some of the active bunkers in the event of an all-out war involving the likes of Russia, North Korea and USA, they werent actually built for us, Cold War Bunkers writer Nick told Daily Star Online.

Provision was never made for the people here, ever, he told us. The Government, military and services were prepared for themselves.

But in other countries there was. In Sweden for example during the cold war, when you had a new build you would have to have fallout shelters included, but we never had that.

Some people built their own fallout shelters there are some fallout shelters in houses but they are very few and far between.

He added: (If there was a nuclear war) theres very little we could do.

In the Cold War the local and national government all had bunkers and fall out shelters and the main reason for those was so that in the event of a nuclear attack they could keep services running.

Nick revealed to Daily Star Online that besides the Government-commissioned bunkers, there are actually secret shelters lying underneath properties across the country that are kept hidden from the public.

During the threat of Cold War some people built their own bunkers under their homes, he said.

There was a company in Kent that would build shelters to order in your garden.

There was this one man in Brixham, Devon who got a bit paranoid in the cold war, and built his own house with a shelter underneath it.

I stayed there the night once, and hed fitted it out in similar equipment to the Government!

GETTY

Hes got plenty of food, water, hes got the generator. He is quite well provided for.

But for how long? Everything is going to run out, so youve got to come out at some time.

All the tins (of food) there I remember were dated to the 1980s, so they never got replaced!

The locations of the secret bunkers revealed to us are mainly in villages, and include Pluckily in Kent, Balcombe in Sussex, South Godstone in Surrey and Brixton in Devon.

But if anyone is now thinking about building their own nuke bunker, Nick has a word of warning: The cost is colossal.

DS

Since 2008, photographer Eric Lafforgue ventured to North Korea six times. Thanks to digital memory cards, he was able to save photos that was forbidden to take inside the segregated state

1 / 62

Taking pictures in the DMZ is easy, but if you come too close to the soldiers, they stop you

He told us: When the UK started its bunker building programme in the 1950s, at the start of the Cold War, we put all our radar stations in protected bunkers and just building the bunkers for the radar stations virtually bankrupted the country.

We cant afford it, and anyway, no bunker that we could build would withstand a direct hit.

They need blast protection, which would be virtually impossible to provide.

You then need filtration so if your air runs out, any air that you bring from the surface is clean from radiation. This would be horrendously expensive.

You would also need a supply of fuel for running a generator and a water supply - it is all just so expensive and the idea of the Government building shelters isnt going to happen.

But dont be downhearted, as Nick believes there is only a small chance of a nuclear bomb going off in Britain.

There is no threat whatsoever from the Soviets. I dont think there is a threat from North Korea either, he said.

The only slight worry would be if a terrorist organisation got hold of something. It would be a small, probably quite dirty bomb. But I dont think you could prepare for something like that.

If anyone is still concerned about not having a bunker, Nick told Daily Star Online: I dont think we have anything to worry about. I have a bunker, but I wont be running to it! I wouldnt want to be stuck down in that.

WW3 FEARS: Pakistan fires ballistic missile against ‘hostile and belligerent India’ – Express.co.uk

It follows outrage from Islamabad about the sale of advanced weapons to India by some countries Pakistan claims would undermine the strategic balance in the region.

Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa said: The weapon system will augment credible deterrence against [the] prevailing threat spectrum more effectively, including anti-missile defences.

Nasr is a high precision weapon system with the ability of quick deployments.

General Bajwa used the launch to target Indias cold start doctrine by saying the missile launch has put cold water on Cold Start.

In India, operation Cold Start is the armys attempt to retaliate to Pakistani terror attacks by quickly mobilising a military unit to seize and hold territory without giving Islamabad the excuse to escalate the conflict.

Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat said: The Cold Start doctrine exists for conventional military operations. Whether we have to conduct conventional operations for such strikes is a decision well thought through, involving the government and the Cabinet Committee on Security.

New Delhi has only recently acknowledged the existence of Cold Start as tensions escalate between the two countries with nuclear weapons.

Pakistans general congratulated the engineers and scientists who were working on the missile project, he said: You are our real heroes; the unseen; we owe you our gratitude.

Our strategic capability is a guarantee of peace against a highly militarised and increasingly belligerent neighbour."

What is an ICBM? How ‘lethal’ North Korea nuclear missile could unleash hell in WW3 – Daily Star

NORTH Korea has revealed it fired an an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) today but what is it and how far can it reach?

North Korea declared itself a "nuclear power" after launching an ICBM into the Sea of Japan in yet another missile test that angered the international community today.

An ICBM is a long-range guided ballistic missile with a minimum range of 5,500 kilometres.

In theory, it is thought US and North Korea which are around 8,000km apart could strike each other with an ICBM.

The primary purpose of the missile is to delivery several warheads containing nuclear weapons on multiple long range targets.

ICBM were first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1958, following by the US in 1959 and China some 20 years later.

UN

Peak speed for an ICMB is around 14,500mph or 6-7km/s with a 10 minute acceleration period.

At that speed an ICBM fired from Moscow could reach New York in around 20 to 30 minutes.

ICBMs can be deployed from multiple platforms, including missile silos, submarines, heavy trucks and mobile launchers on rails.

Russia's RS-24 Yars Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) can strike anywhere in the US with ten nuclear warheads, according to reports.

US nukes are like Ferraris: beautiful, intricate, and designed for high performance.

China has developed a similar platform, and the US has no way to defend against such devastating nukes.

In comparison, the US's Minuteman III ICBM carries just one warhead, and was introduced in the 1970s.

Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, publisher of Arms Control Wonk, said the US possess the most accurate nukes in the world.

He said: US nukes are like Ferraris: beautiful, intricate, and designed for high performance.

Experts have said the plutonium pits will last for 100s of years."

World on brink of WW3 as NATO boss warns Putin cyber attack could trigger ARMED RESPONSE – Daily Star

A TOP NATO official has warned another major cyber attack may lead to all out war as governments reel from devastating hacks.

Secretary general Jens Stoltenberg made the chilling comment following a paralysing software attack that crippled governments and businesses across the globe.

Mr Stoltenberg said: The attack in May and this week underlines the importance of strengthening our cyber defences and that is what we are doing.

We exercise more, we share best practices and technology and we also work more and more closely with all allies.

He added NATO leaders last year agreed a devastating cyberattack could be considered a threat to warrant members to trigger article 5 which states nations will actively defend an ally if they come under attack.

While it is not clear where the ransomeware hack which holds data hostage until payments are made originated, officials in Ukraine laid blame squarely at Vladimir Putins feet.

Kiev previously stated the Kremlin had launched similarly devastating attacks on their neighbour.

WW3 IMMINENT: Russia says tensions with NATO troops ‘likely to deteriorate’ – Daily Star

RUSSIA has warned the tensions between itself and NATO are "likely to deteriorate" as total war in Europe looks ever more likely.

Sergey Shoigu, Russias defence minister, said the growing NATO presence in Eastern Europe demonstrates blatant unwillingness of Western nations to stop pursuing an anti-Russian agenda.

Shoigu also said Russia would be forced to beef up its defence preparations amid the increased threat of war.

It is related to the growing military activity of NATO countries in Eastern Europe, Shoigu said.

The ongoing developments clearly indicate blatant unwillingness of the Western partners to stop pursuing the anti-Russian agenda.

"The NATO summit in May also demonstrated that, when international terrorism and Russia were placed on the same list of threats.

The NATO buildup includes the modernisation of airfields, ports and other military sites, as well as the deployment of new US missile defence systems.

NATO army surrounds Russia in war games — strikes WW3 fears? – Blasting News

The Express has reported that "#Russia was surrounded on all sides by #NATO forces yesterday as America and Britain kicked off a summer of war games in Kaliningrad, amid World War III fears."

The NATO army, led by a huge number of U.S. nuclear bombers that mainly consist of B-52, B-1, and B-2 stealth airplanes is surrounding Russia along the borders of their western enclave in order to confront Putin's Baltic fleet. In this operation, now called Sabra Strike, the British will provide any help that might be necessary with some of the very best of their war planes.

According to Lieutenant Richard Clark, a U.S.

air force commander, NATO clearly wants to show that they will do anything in their power to prevent any kind of conflict that might occur in the future. There is no doubt this is a bold move from NATO as these joint forces of the UK and USA clearly show that they are ready to swoop in when even the slightest possibility of conflict arises, and, if needed, they are even ready to confront Russia along the way.

Apparently, Operation Sabra Strike was launched because Russia sent a couple of their own nuclear bombers last week across the #Baltic Sea. These bombers just happen to be Tu-160 Blackjack strategic nuclear bombers, the world's largest aircraft.

There's no doubt that Russian President Vladimir Putin is absolutely furious because of this bold move. It was reported that Mr.

Putin denies any kind of rumors that Russia is planning an attack on Baltic countries. He also stated that it is, in fact, NATO that is threatening the stability of whole Eastern Europe by increasing their military presence and demonstrating these types of war games.

Lieutenant Steven Venter, a U.S. Commander explains the real reason behind Operation Sabra Strike. He said that it is all for defense purposes as their main focus is to defend NATO from any kind of future attacks that might occur. According to him, there is no better way to stop the aggression than to be not only ready but a razor sharp and lethal as well.

As NATO officials firmly believe, this serious conflict in the Baltic sea will definitely lead to Moscow holding an even greater military exercise in September than was originally planned. Apparently, this exercise, that goes by the codename "Zapad", will be taking place in Russia and Belarus and it might involve up to 100,000 troops.

Jerusalem, Nicosia and WW3 – Dissident Voice

How did this came about? How did the Cypriots, who are known to support the Palestinian cause, become a province of the Israeli empire?

An Israel-Europe gas pipeline deal is the answer.

In the beginning of April we learned about a proposed 2,000 kilometer subsea pipeline connecting gas fields located offshore in Gaza and Cyprus with Greece and possibly Italy.

The pipeline agreement among Israel, Italy, Cyprus and Greece leaves both the Turks and the Palestinians out. While Gaza faces a critical energy crisis with electricity reduced to less than three hours a day; Israel aims to collect billions of dollars from a significant natural gas reserve located off the Gaza shore and well within Palestinian territorial water (assuming such a term exist).

Yuval Steinitz, Israels energy minister, hailed the pipeline project expected to be in operation in 2025 as the beginning of a wonderful friendship between four Mediterranean countries. Of course, not all related Mediterranean nations are included in the deal. We can foresee that this is a recipe for disaster: the pipeline and the gas installation are soft targets. The region is volatile. Cyprus is putting its sovereignty at risk. It may, within a short time, God forbid, become a battle ground for some merciless global operators.

Cyprus leadership realises that it has to become an Israeli province if it wants an oil pipeline that dispatches plundered Palestinian natural gas. And as the video reveals, Cyprus is now protected by its Israelite big brother. The Israeli-Cypriot joint military drill was performed to deliver a message to Turkey and other regional players: any attempt to interfere with their gas theft project will be met by Israeli military brutality.

Brit soldiers in MAJOR military drill as Russia WW3 fears grow in eastern Europe – Daily Star

BRIT and US soldiers were involved in a huge NATO military drill in the shadow of Russia as fears of invasion increase.

GETTY

It is NATOs first defensive drill on the border between Poland and Lithuania and involved 1,500 troops.

This comes as tensions between Vladimir Putin and the US rose at the weekend as a US jet shot down a Syrian warplane an ally of Russia.

Sergei Ryabkov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, called the incident yesterday a "dangerous escalation".

We have to demonstrate that we can support allies

It was rehearsing for a Russian invasion of the Baltic states.

if they seize the Suwalki Gap then it would cut off Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Over two days, US helicopters and British aircraft took part in exercises in a simulated defence of the potential flashpoint.

We live in turbulent times. Trump has the keys to nuclear weapons, and could end work to prevent climate change. Putin is looming in the East, the far-right are on the rise in Europe and Kim Jong-un is developing nuclear weapons of his own. Is this the END of days?

1 / 13

Before his inauguration, Donald Trump asked a security expert three times during a briefing, why the US couldn't use nuclear weapons after he becomes president.

American helicopters landed in a field in rural Lithuania on Saturday, startling grazing horses and cows.

US Lieutenant General Ben Hodges said: The gap is vulnerable because of the geography. It's not inevitable that there's going to be an attack.

But if that was closed, then you have three allies that are north that are potentially isolated from the rest of the alliance.

Russia denies any plans to invade the Baltics, and says it is NATO that is threatening stability in eastern Europe.

But Hodges, who commands US forces in Europe, said it was crucial for the alliance to show it was ready.

"We have to practice, we have to demonstrate that we can support allies in keeping (the Gap) open, in maintaining that connection," he said.

Eleven NATO countries have sent 4,000 troops to Lithuania to participate in this years Iron Sword exercises.

Members of the U.S. 173rd Airborne Brigade prepare a simulated attack

There are currently 4,500 troops deployed in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

The Poles have been pushing other NATO allies to use some of these troops to secure the vulnerable Suwalki Gap.

"The training helps present a credible defence force that hopefully will deter aggression, but if not, we'll be prepared to move to defend the borders of NATO," added Lieutenant Colonel Steven Gventer, who leads the US battlegroup in Orzysz.

Dennis Rodman risks starting WW3 with North Korea with THIS gift to Kim Jong-Un – Daily Star

FORMER basketball legend Dennis Rodman risked the wrath of Kim Jong-Un during his latest visit.

Rodman has become a regular in North Korea after becoming a close friend of the Supreme Commander.

The blossoming buddies apparently bonded over their love of basketball.

And Rodman headed to Pyongyang for a fifth time this week, but the 56-year-old might not get an invite back.

As par too his visit, he showed off some of the gifts he was giving to the tubby tyrant's sports minister to cameras.

AP

And among the basketball shirts was a copy of Donald Trumps book The Art of the Deal.

The US President has been vocally critical of Kim Jong-Un and his despotic rule in the secretive state, leading to mounting world tensions.

Trump has previously vowed to deal with North Korea and has continued to be bullish in his behaviour.

In response, Kim Jong-Un has ordered a series of missile tests as he looks to create nuclear weapons that could reach the US mainland.

North Korean news agency KCNA has released images which show another successful missile test inside the secretive state. This is sure to heighten tensions in the already fraught Korean Peninsula

DefCon level REDUCED to SAFEST rank despite North Korea WW3 threat – Express.co.uk

GETTY

The lowered threat level comes despite continued tensions in the Korean peninsula between the hermit state of the North and the United States and South Korea.

The DefCon Warning System is a private intelligence organisation which has monitored and assessed nuclear threats against the US by national entities for more than 33 years.

According to reports on the site, South Korea has not expressed any desire for war with its neighbouring country, causing the United States to re-evaluate its plans for the region.

The statement added the public should make their own evaluations and not rely on the DefCon Warning System for strategic planning, adding all citizens should learn what steps to take in the effect of a nuclear attack.

North Korea has repeatedly flouted United Nations and international sanctions to test a range of long-range ballistic missiles - with experts claiming the despot nation could potentially launch a missile test every two weeks for the rest of the year.

Last months launch of the Hwasong-12 rocket is believed to have had the capability of reaching the US mainland.

The ground-to-ground medium-to-long range ballistic missile

Only last week, the reclusive state fired what appeared to be several land-to-ship missiles off its east coast, just one day after the South Korean military postponed full deployment of a controversial US anti-missile system designed - THAAD - to deter a North Korean attack.

Compared to the different types of ballistic missiles Pyongyang has tested in recent months, the missiles launched last week are considered to be more defensive in nature, designed to defend against threats such as enemy warships.

In recent weeks, a US expert claimed that Kim Jong-un is only one step away from developing a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), to which the Trump administrations head of missile defence expressed great concern.

North Korea has stated that it has accomplished high precision in newest missile test, which if true, would mark significant progress in the countrys ballistic programme.

Tensions in the Korean peninsula have been running high for weeks, with Washington refusing to rule out a military strike against the dictatorship in response to any attacks.

North Korea has carried out five nuclear tests in the last 11 years and is widely believed to be making progress towards its dream of building a missile capable of delivering a warhead to the continental US.

GETTY

Since assuming office, Kim Jong-un greatly increased the number of tests he authorised from eight in 2012, to an averaged total of 15.3 tests per year up to 2016.

Each Spring, the regime raises the tone of its warnings in response to joint exercises carried out by Washington and Seoul.

The regime has condemned these military exercises, accusing them of being rehearsals for an invasion.

World War 3: Putin deploys ‘kill all’ missile system and points it at North Korea – Daily Star

VLADIMIR PUTIN has deployed his "matchless" missile system to Kim Jong-un's border defend against attacks as World War 3 looks imminent.

The Buk-M3 is the most advanced anti-missile system in the world, according to Moscow.

The move is seen as a deliberate effort to stem the tide of North Korean aggression which resulted in a number of successful nuke tests over the last few weeks.

Putin has previously expressed "profound concern" over Kim's recent missile launches.

Reports said the deployment was "a precaution due to the situation in the Korean peninsula escalates".

"The brigade can be relocated further east and used to cover administrative and industrial centres from possible missile or aviation attack."

The Buk-M3 is seen as countering cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, aircrafts and helicopters, and this is its first deployment in the east of the country.

"If they ever get to a point where they can hit the continental USA, then they'll also be able to hit us.

"US President Donald Trump has said the world will never see North Korea reach the final stage of developing nuclear weapons that could reach the US, but recent strategic weapon tests have proved the country is not far away from testing an ICBM.

Pyongyang fired the ballistic Hwasong-12 missile last month, reaching an altitude of 1,312 miles.

GETTY

While the regime hailed it as a success, that claim was later backed up by South Korea and US officials who confirmed it could have hit American soil.

In response the US carried out the first test of a missile defence system against an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) able to intercept a missile from North Korea.

This guy is irrational

Gerry Brownlee

And adding to fears, Mr Browlee highlighted the volatile and unstable nature of its portly leader, Kim Jong-un, who often sets unrealistic targets on his malnourished and impoverished citizens.

He said: This guy is irrational. He's nuts and not a sort of person that you'd want to have with a finger anywhere near the trigger of a nuclear weapon.

"It's an awful situation there, you've got a complete nutter running the place.

"Bear in mind here there's millions of people in North Korea living on the edge of starvation.

"We've made a small contribution over the years to the food and support for those people.

GETTY

But if there's any doubt about whether it's funding the nuclear programme, we're dealing with that by stopping the funding."

There are fears North Korea could imminently test-fire another missile, following the pattern seen over the past few months.

Will Thucydides’ Trap lead to World War 3? – The Sunday Guardian

LONDON: Where do you think World War 3 (WW3) will start? Probably not in Europe, even though there are tensions in the Ukraine and on the borders of the Baltic states. President Vladimir Putin is using these areas to scratch away at NATO and in the case of Ukraine, to prevent the further expansion of this defence treaty, which will celebrate its 70th birthday in two-years time. Putin has nothing to gain from attacking the Baltic states and the Crimea will remain a permanent part of Russia. Provided the West recognises these facts and Kiev agrees to some form of federation within Ukraine, Putin will scale down his support for the rebels in the east, which will de-escalate tensions in the area. Nor will WW3 start in the troublesome Middle East, whose problems are likely to fester without a solution for years to come. Only if President Donald Trump cancels the Iranian nuclear deal, will tensions there rise even further. As Syria approaches the messy endgame in its civil war, Turkey, Iran and the Kurds are hovering over recaptured land from ISIS, like vultures over a carcase and will re-draw the ill-fated line in the sand created by the Sykes-Picot agreement in 1916. Russia will be satisfied with an enlarged naval base in Tartus and a greatly expanded airbase in Latakia as a reward for supporting the Bashar al-Assad regime, which will remain beholden to it. These bases will provide Putin with a useful counterbalance to NATO in its south-eastern flank, lost when the Soviet Union collapsed more than 25 years ago. Nor will WW3 break out over the crazy nuclear antics of North Korea. The recently increased sanctions by China give a useful clue to the seriousness with which they consider the threat of the nuclear build-up by Kim Jong-un. China could solve this problem at any time they wish, as the regime of Jong-un would collapse without its assistance. No, the most likely scenario for WW3 is over the sovereignty of the South China Sea (SCS).

Consider a few facts. Some $6 trillion of trade passes through the SCS every year. According to the US Energy Information Administration, there are $11 billion barrels of oil and $190 trillion cubic feet of gas in the SCS. At the present time, more than half of the tonnage of world crude oil transported by sea passes through the SCS, with thousands of merchant and fishing vessels using it every day. If you take a look at a geopolitical map of the region, you will see a number of overlapping areas of the SCS which show the various claims of sovereignty by six neighbouring countries. Dotted within these areas are numerous islands, reefs and banks, many of which are not only claimed, but also occupied by the awakened giant in the area, the Peoples Republic of China (PRC). Over the past few years, the PRC has dredged and reclaimed thousands of acres in the SCS, building artificial islands, on which they have constructed such infrastructure as runways, radar facilities, support buildings and loading piers. From these the PRC has the potential to boost their power projection over the entire area, well into the Bay of Bengal, by deploying aircraft, warships and offensive missiles. Recent satellite imagery of the Subi and Fiery Cross Reef of the Spratley Islands, which are also claimed by Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan, shows advanced Chinese military facilities which are now active.

In 2011, the PRC, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam agreed to a set of preliminary guidelines, which would help to resolve the dispute over sovereignty of the SCS. This covered the normal maritime activity such as safety of navigation, communications and search and rescue, but left the issue of oil and natural gas exploration unresolved. The latter was tested by India when its state-run explorer, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) signed an agreement with PetroVietnam to carry out exploration in certain blocks of the SCS claimed by Vietnam. This was denounced by PRC in a statement which began China enjoys indisputable sovereignty over the SCS and islands. This emphatic response was later backed up by the Chinese President Xi Jinping when he stated We are strongly committed to safeguarding the countrys sovereignty and security, and defending our territorial integrity, the latter referring to the newly created islands. In the northern SCS, often referred to as the East China Sea (ECS), lie the Diaoyu/Senkakus islands, over which China and Japan have been in dispute since the Sino-Japanese war of 1894. Provocations against Japans sovereign sea and land are continuing, but they must not be tolerated, said Japans Prime Minister Shinzo Abe recently, referring to these islands. The hard line approach by the PRC over much of both the SCS and ECS could trigger not only armed conflict with its neighbours, but also the United States, through the latters military alliances and commitments with its allies, Japan and the Philippines. In February this year, the US sailed a carrier group on what they called routine operations through the SCS, during which time they were tailed by Chinese vessels as they surveilled the man-made islands, ignoring Beijings warnings not to challenge its sovereignty in the strategic waterways. The Pentagon issued a statement that the US Navy had been doing these operations for many years and would continue to do so. Defense Secretary James Mattis, a staunch believer in President Trumps Peace through Strength policy, is likely to abandon the previous administrations policy of seeking to avoid upsetting China. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also weighed in on the dispute, promising that the US would block China from further militarising the islands. This is a potentially explosive scenario, which could lead to conflict on a grand scale between an established world power and one which is rapidly developing into an equivalent world power.

Almost two and a half thousand years ago, a similar dilemma resulted in the Peloponnesian War of 411 BC, which devastated Greece. At the time, Sparta (read US) became fearful of a rising power Athens (read China), which made war inevitable. The Athenian historian, Thucydides, recounted this war which engulfed his homeland, the city-state of Athens, and since then it has been called Thucydides Trap, a phenomenon which has occurred no less than 16 times, according to some historians, when an established world power was challenged by a rising one and major miscalculations were made. In his 2015 essay in the Atlantic, the renowned historian Professor Graham Allison, argued that this historical metaphor provides the best lens available for illuminating relations between China and the US today. During their 2015 summit, Presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping discussed the Trap at length. Both being aware of the dangers, it was re-assuring that they concluded that the two countries are capable of managing their disagreements. However, since then a new player has arrived on the scene, one who is committed to making America great again. President Trump, having fired up populist nationalist support, could well dress himself in Spartan robes (particularly if they were made of gold) and see China as Athens. Unless the US and China can avoid conflict as effectively as did the US and the USSR during four decades of the Cold War, there is the possibility that Thucydides Trap could be enacted for the 17th time in the form of WW3.

Although this scenario appears to be as unlikely as it would be unwise, we are currently commemorating the centenary of another example of the Trap, which resulted in the folly of the First World War. It is well to keep in mind the words of the Spanish philosopher, George Santayana, Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

John Dobson worked in UK Prime Minister John Majors Office between 1995 and 1998 and is presently a consultant in the private sector.

‘No one will survive’ Russian president Vladimir Putin in chilling nuclear war confession – Daily Star

RUSSIAN president Vladimir Putin has revealed his chilling belief everyone will die if the world is plunged into nuclear war.

The bombastic leader made the shock confession as the globe is on the brink of all-out conflict.

North Korea and its tyrant leader Kim Jong-un are building up their nuclear weapons in defiance of international law and the US and Russia are at loggerheads over the Syria conflict.

Speaking on a new US documentary The Putin Interviews due to be released next week, Putin said US President Donald Trump would not win if war broke out.

I dont think anyone would survive such a conflict

I dont think anyone would survive such a conflict, Putin told US film director Oliver Stone.

Relations between Russia and the US are at the lowest ebb since the Cold War but Putin isnt too hopeful of this turning around.

There is always hope. Until they are ready to bring us to the cemetery and bury us, Putin added.

Putin has an arsenal of state-of-the-art weaponry at his fingertips. Could this be the hardware that wages WW3?

The preview also featured a clip of the president in his military situation room.

He showed the camera a video feed from a Russian military jet in Syria.

The bald president then decries that NATO is an instrument of US foreign policy.

Once a country becomes a NATO member, it is hard to resist the pressures of the US, he said.

And all of a sudden any weapons system can be placed in this country.

An anti-ballistic missile system, new military bases and if need be, new offensive systems.

As tensions between NATO and Russia escalate, 4,000 soldiers have turned up on Putin's doorstep to show him what he'd be messing with

Russia is forced to take countermeasures over the ever-increasing NATO threat and armed military build-up on Russias borders, Putin claims.

We have to aim our missile systems at facilities that are threatening us. The situation becomes more tense, Putin said.

How to Handle a Pushy Mother-In-Law without Starting WW3 – eMaxHealth

I recently heard a young woman lament that it was going to be her daughters first birthday and her mother-in-law wanted the other children to get presents and the traditional first birthday smash cake too, even though it was not their birthday. Her rationale was so they wouldnt feel left out or be upset over a one-year-old baby getting attention.

Well I think that really says it all.

It may sound like a minor thing but turning one happens only once in a lifetime and its a milestone. Turning one used to be a huge thing because many kids died before they reached their first birthday.

So, I dont think its too much to ask for that day to be special for the child whose birthday is being celebrated.

Children are egocentric but they can understand it's not always supposed to be about them and they can be taught respect even at a very young age. If you don't begin early taking these opportunities to teach life lessons you are either going to create selfish children or set a precedent that every other special occasion means they have to be part of the limelight or get presents. Either way you're doing a disservice to the children. Chances are since the mother-in-law already anticipates a problem she's behaved this way in the past and had used bribery to pacify a tantrum. Better to be honest and take the opportunity as a teaching lesson.

Daughter and mother-in-law relationships are often adversarial. The mother-in-law is probably used to making decisions regarding her son or at least having influence and often feels it is still her right even after her son is married.

Daughter-in-laws and sometimes sons dont want to rock the boat and would rather just try to keep the peace, but there comes a time and place when a gentle reminder is appropriate.

Voicing a preference can be an assertive action rather than an aggressive or passive-aggressive one. Take the high road.

In the case of the young mom trying to throw a special party for her one-year-olds birthday this suggestion is worth a try.

Deliver the message with love (even if youre not feeling it) at the moment. Try to muster a little feel good emotion and keep the focus simple then say, "I understand that it would be cute for the kids to all smash the cakes, but this is a special birthday celebration, and I would prefer for there to be only one smash cake. Thanks for understanding."

Now you've turned the tables and done it nicely.

You cant really control any other action such as her giving the other children presents rather than teaching them how to focus on someone else without having a meltdown or having to get presents to avoid a selfish display, but you can ask that the attention for the day be on your child. As a grandmother she should understand even if shes used to running the show.

As to presents most people have party favors so you can give small items such as hats or noisemakers without taking the focus away from the birthday girl or boy.

If the mother-in-law still doesnt get it after you've done everything you can and you are feeling magnanimous, suggest perhaps having cupcakes for the girls to take home and smash at grandmas house and be sure when you make that suggestion you do it with love and a HUGE smile! Then hand the cupcakes in little boxes to the kids and say, "have fun smashing these at grandma's!"

I think your mother-in-law will get the point.

North Korea WW3: Japan prepares for EVACUATION after missile tests – Daily Star

NORTH KOREAS latest missile tests have forced Japan to undergo evacuation drills with over fears of an impending attack.

Kim Jong-uns tyrannical state fired an unidentified warhead last week which fell close to the neighbouring country.

Days after on Sunday (June 4) hundreds of residents from a small Japanese coastal town took part to simulate a ballistic missile strike.

The town of Abu which faces the Sea of Japan is surrounded by the Yamaguchi prefecture range, which host a major US Marine Corps air station.

GETTY

I was able to stay calm and evacuated in a few minutes, 67-year-old Yuriko Suewaka, who was among the 280 people involved in the exercise, told Jiji Press.

As WW3 tensions escalate further, there are plans to conduct more drills later this month in Yamagata and Niigata which both also face the Sea of Japan.

The government has requested local communities to prepare for the holding of an evacuation drill, an official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

GETTY

North Koreas long-running tension with the West hit new levels on Friday after a US official claimed the country does not have the capability to stop Kims deadly missiles.

John F. Tierny executive director of the Centre for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation said the system aimed to intercept nuclear bombs has failed to destroy its target three out of the last five attempts.

Kim is also providing a new threat with claims he has an army of 6,000 hackers ready to gain access into Western computer systems.

North Korea facing new alliance to stop WW3 as Japan pledges to team up with China – Express.co.uk

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told China's top diplomat he would like to work with China to try to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

Prime Minister Abe said: To resolve this problem peacefully, we would like to work with China, which has strong influence (over North Korea).

In return, Mr Yang said he hoped all parties play a constructive role in resolving the issue.

GETTY

This partnership takes on an especially symbolic importance given the dark history of Sino-Japanese relations, highlighted by the Rape of Nanking in 1937, an atrocity committed by Japan which left hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians dead.

And in 2014 a poll revealed 90 per cent of Chinese people polled expressed a negative view on Japan, while 85 per cent of Japanese people concerned disputes between the two nations could lead to another war.

Taking pictures in the DMZ is easy, but if you come too close to the soldiers, they stop you

But North Koreas increasingly erratic actions could force the two rivals to come together in order to bring stability to the region.

Kim Jong-un regularly threatens Japan, seen as one of the countrys biggest enemies, promising several times this year to reduce Tokyo to ashes.

But more worrying in recent weeks has been the emergence of North Korean threats against China, traditionally seen as one of Kims biggest ally.

GETTY

Last month North Korean state media accused China of a betrayal following the introduction of coal imports to the country

It said: China should no longer recklessly try to test the limitations of our patience. We have so devotedly helped the Chinese revolution and suffered enormous damage.

North Korea should be very careful

Odd Arne Westad

And one North Korean expert warned Beijing was quickly losing patience with North Korea.

Odd Arne Westad of Harvard University said: North Korea should be very careful. It's clear Beijing now sees further, deeper urgency in getting talks started and these talks have to centre on North Korean nuclear and missile programmes.

GETTY

The end point will have to be at least a freeze on North Korean nuclear and missile programs with an aim of its abolition, not necessarily to insist on its immediate disarmament.

Prof Westad said relations had never been as bad as they are today - and they seem to be getting worse very quickly.
