Ireland, home of adventure capitalism

Ireland has proven to be a major hit, with some of the biggest adventure travel specialists in the world heaping praise on the country.

This week saw Killarney in Co Kerry host the prestigious Adventure Travel World Summit a gathering of the biggest names in the travel industry.

Some 700 delegates kayaked, climbed and cycled around many of the best outdoors venues in Ireland with many tweeting and posting images of their travels all over the world.

Its the first time the event has been held in Ireland and promises to be a huge boost to Irelands growing adventure travel market.

Filte Ireland estimates that the direct economic impact from hosting the summit would be in the region of 1m, along with the significant marketing, industry education and global networking value it will also provide.

The global world adventure travel market is estimated to be worth almost $90bn and around 852m here in Ireland.

Nathan Borchelt, senior product manager for travel and adventure with National Geographic, said Ireland was moving beyond the clichs of pubs and friendly people.

No matter how much time Ive spent in Ireland, its clear that its not enough, said Nathan.

The country exceeds every known clich the pubs and the rolling hills and the kind-hearted people and the Guinness.

But, as a landscape for adventure, it feels like Ireland is defining a whole new part to its already-rich persona.

Teens become world travelers with Girl Scout Destinations

For two Girl Scouts of South Countys Troop 11294, summer 2014 will be remembered as a time of adventure, growth and world travel.

Claire Cromley, a sophomore at The John Cooper School, and Claire Miller, a homeschooled sophomore, both traveled overseas as part of the Girl Scouts Destinations program.

Cromley, who joined the Girl Scouts as a Daisy nine years ago, traveled to Ireland with the Destination Ireland Multi-Sport Adventure, and Miller, who has been a Girl Scout for six years, visited New Zealand, Australia and Fiji as part of Destination Amazing Oz and the South Pacific.

To be selected, the girls had to submit an application to the Girl Scout Council including references and an essay describing why they wanted to go on the respective trips.

With the help of scholarships from the Girl Scout Council and money saved up from babysitting and lifeguarding, both girls were able to make their dream trips a reality.

Miller explained that she was first drawn to the Destinations program when she went to a Girl Scout Open House several years ago and saw a booth some girls had set up sharing their experiences with Destinations.

They had these big poster boards with pictures from all their trip experiences, Miller said. They seemed very confident in themselves, which really drew me to traveling ... they told me this saying, to travel is to discover yourself. I wanted to try it out for myself.

Miller experienced her first Destinations trip to Panama and Costa Rica in 2012, where she became a certified scuba diver.

For her second Destinations trip this summer she chose the New Zealand, Australia and Fiji experience because she wanted to see someplace different.

Im a big adventurer, Miller said. So I was really into going as far as I could.

Dubai: The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 trophy returned to Dubai on Thursday after having embarked on a world tour, which started at the ICC headquarters in the city on July 3.

The trophy has so far visited India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea. It is scheduled to travel next to the West Indies from here.

The trophy was received at the ICC Cricket Academy by UAE coach and member of the 1992 Cricket World Cup winning Pakistan squad, Aqib Javed.

"This trophy holds a special place in every cricketer's heart. It is the biggest prize in international cricket. The UAE will be playing in the ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time since 1996 and we are confident of putting in a performance that will make our fans proud," said Javed.

The UAE team recently returned from a tour of Australia, as part of an initiative of the ICC High Performance Programme, aimed at providing the four qualifying associate teams -- Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland and the UAE --valuable match experience ahead of the tournament across host nations Australia and New Zealand.

World Cricket's biggest extravaganza gets underway on February 14 in Christchurch and Melbourne, with the final to be played in Melbourne on March 29.
