World Travel Market 2014 interview Razvan Maric, Romania

At the World Travel Market 2014 in London, the leading event for the global travel industry, euronews spoke to Razvan Maric from the Romanian National Authority for Tourism about how his country is currently promoting Romanias Black Sea Coast as a new hot spot for summer fun in the sun.

Over the past three years, the Black Sea Coast, in particular the resort of Mamaia has become known as the Ibiza of the East so it has a lot of clubs, and events going on in the summer. Our season is quite short, about three months, every summer and those three months are full of carnivals, of parades of people partying non-stop. So that is why we want to promote here at the World Travel Market our coastal resort as a destination for party.

World Travel Market 2014 interview Pierre Coenegrachts, Belgium

At the World Travel Market 2014 in London, the leading event for the global travel industry, euronews spoke to Pierre Coenegrachts from Wallonia-Brussels Tourism about how Belgium is trying to use big events happening on its soil to bring tourists to the country.

Because of the crisis you mentioned obviously people go North South, looking for the sun but also people come North to discover some new destinations. We are focusing on Southern France, Italy, Spain, and Germany to bring people over for events. We have big events as I told you coming up next year, but we also have international events such as cycling, Tour de France coming to Belgium next year. Formula 1 Grand Prix in Spa every year, so this brings people coming over for these events, and at the same discover our country. We try to keep them and make them come back. Of course, because of the crisis, people also from the North also try not to go too far, and they try to discover new destinations. And we are among these new destinations for people from Scandinavia for example.

World Travel Market 2014 interview Eglantina Gjermeni, Albania

At the World Travel Market 2014 in London, the leading event for the global travel industry, euronews spoke to Eglantina Gjermeni, Albanian Minister of Urban Development and Tourism ,about Albania as an upcoming travel destination in the Adriatic region.

In the whole region there are countries that have more experience, like Croatia or Greece. I do think that Albania has some own specifics or its own uniqueness. I think we are building our approach and our strategy on what is authentic about Albania. To keep our identity, to really share with the other countries the values and what we know to do best or better than the others. Of course the coast is so beautiful, and the landscape as well. But in a small country, we could develop different kind of tourisms. So even we have the sun and sand tourism, the coast, not just the Adriatic but the Ionian Sea as well, has really great potentials. They are unspoiled beauties, beautiful ones, and they are really open for tourists and investors to come and we are really trying to get the best investment to develop a sustainable tourism in my country.

World Travel Market 2014 interview Sandra Naranjo, Ecuador

At the World Travel Market 2014 in London, the leading event for the global travel industry, euronews spoke to Ecuador Minister of tourism, Mrs Sandra Naranjo about the diversity in the tourism offer of Ecuador.

Basically we are working on five pillars to improve the supply of the products that we have to offer. So we are working on safety, on quality, on the products and destinations, and then we are also working on attracting more than once for the activity and promotion. We have some very interesting products to show, like the train cruise that ends in the capital and ends at the coast. We have a lot of products within the Amazonas, we have some very high-end hotels or a community project that is a beautiful experience to see, a wildlife center, a river-cruise within the national park, which is the biggest hot spot on earth. And then of course the Galapagos, the jewel of the crown.

Africa tourist chiefs defy Ebola fears

African countries at a world travel exhibition have presented a united front in the battle to woo tourists back to the continent following the Ebola crisis.

Ebola-hit country Sierra Leone pulled out of World Travel Market in London but two other West African countries, Nigeria and Senegal, where the outbreak is deemed to be over, were at the exhibition in London's Docklands.

Senegal hopes this year's tourist numbers are not too badly hit by the health crisis.

"We have a lot to offer visitors," said Ms Houma Dia, the marketing and communication director of the Senegalese Tourism Promotion Agency.

She flew to London for WTM at which Senegal is exhibiting for the first time in four years.

Another who travelled from West Africa was Ms Bolanle Osute, the marketing and communication director for the Keystone Bank, which is a partner of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation.

"Ebola has not stopped people wanting to come to Nigeria," she said.

Two other Ebola-suffering countries, Guinea and Liberia, do not take part in WTM.

There has been concern the crisis could affect not only West African tourism but visitor levels throughout Africa. At WTM Kenya Tourism Board was buoyant about tourism prospects, revealing that the East African country received nearly 150,000 British visitors in 2013.

Last week, the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) said worldwide tourist numbers increased five per cent in the first eight months of this year, with northern Europe one of the highest growth areas.

70 tourism firms for London World Fair

Monday, November 03 14:16:46

70 Irish tourism businesses together with Tourism Ireland and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring are in London today at the world's largest travel fair.

Their presence at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London today heralds the beginning of the promotional drive overseas for the 2015 season.

Now in its 35th year, World Travel Market is the largest B2B event in the global travel and tourism calendar, with about 50,000 travel industry professionals from around the world and 3,000 influential international media in attendance.

According to the organisers of WTM, more than Stg2.2 billion's (approximately E2.8 billion's) worth of business was transacted at the event in 2013. This year, some 70 Irish tourism enterprises - including hotels, visitor attractions, ferry companies, coach companies, incoming tour operators, hostels and activity providers - are exhibiting at the Tourism Ireland stand. Over the next four days, they will engage in thousands of meetings with British and international tour operators as they negotiate and exchange vital contracts for 2015.

With more than 180 countries and regions all vying for business at WTM this week, Tourism Ireland aims to stand out from the crowd and capture the attention of the global media and travel trade in attendance - highlighting the unique offerings of the island of Ireland for potential visitors around the world.

The latest CSO figures for overseas visitors to Ireland are very strong, confirming growth of 9.3pc in overseas visitors to Ireland for the January to September period more than 500,000 additional visitors when compared with the same nine-month period in 2013. Government initiatives - including the reduction of the air travel tax to zero (which has helped increase key air routes to Ireland), as well as the retention of VAT on tourism services at 9pc (helping to make Ireland more competitive in terms of value for money), have played a significant role in helping grow visitor numbers. The recent launch of the British-Irish Visa Scheme is also significant, as it will mean Chinese and Indian visitors will be able - for the first time - to visit both Ireland and the UK, including Northern Ireland, on a single visa of either country.

Minister Michael Ring said: "I am highly impressed with the level of business being done by the tourism industry at this year's World Travel Market, particularly at the Ireland Stand, where I have seen tourism enterprises from all parts of Ireland conducting hundreds of business meetings and doing a great job of selling tourism to the global travel trade. The Government believes strongly in the importance of tourism as a vehicle for Irish economic recovery, and we are committed to supporting the tourism industry's efforts to increase Ireland's export earnings from overseas tourism."

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: "The large representation of Irish tourism companies on the Tourism Ireland stand at World Travel Market this year is extremely welcome and essential in the highly competitive global marketplace."

Holiday.com domain name could fetch 20m

A new record price for a domain name could be set this week when a web address that has been described as the holy grail of the travel industry goes under the hammer.

It is thought that holiday.com could fetch as much as 20m when it is put up for auction at the World Travel Market event, which opens in London on Monday.

The web address could command such a high sum because holiday is one of the most searched-for terms online, with 90% of travel companies including it in the top-five keywords searched for by potential customers.

According to Guinness World Records, the $13m (8.1m) paid for sex.com by Clover Holdings in 2010 is the most expensive domain name-only transaction.

But Brian Sharples, the founder and chief executive of HomeAway site, said last year that his company paid $35m in 2007 for the name VacationRentals.com to ensure it was not bought by travel site Expedia.com.

Farad Laaforce, managing director of auction organisers Breathe Luxury, described holiday.com as a premium domain name.

Holiday is the main key word in the travel industry. It is only in the United States that people use the term vacation. People in India and China also use the word holiday, so its potential is massive, he said.

The domain is being sold by a US company that lacked the resources to fully exploit it, said Laaforce.

A one-word domain name can be valuable because it is easier to remember, said Richard Winslow, head of web hosting services at domain name registration site 123-reg. Search engines like Google will value that if you have the right content behind it. But you need to have a business plan and to be able to use the name and market it effectively, he said.
