Kerala films on 'responsible tourism' shown in London

The UN World Tourism Organisation unveiled three short films from Kerala to promote the state's 'Responsible Tourism' initiative at the world's biggest travel and tourism trade event in London.

A press statement issued here Thursday by Kerala Tourism said UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai launched the three films produced by Kerala Tourism at the ongoing World Travel Market (WTM) in London Wednesday in the presence of Kerala Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar and tourism secretary Suman Billa.

The UN official said Kerala has placed 'responsible tourism' at the core of tourism development since 2007 and was indeed an inspiration for all.

"Kerala has transferred the power of tourism into a force that improves livelihood, projects nature and builds bridges between cultures," he said.

Directed by Anwar Rasheed, the films depict how the 'responsible tourism' initiative, which links the local community with the hospitality industry, was helping empower the people and improve their lives while conserving nature.

Inspired by true events, the films show how the lives of ordinary people have been transformed by the 'responsible tourism' initiative.

"Guide" is the story of a shy village student who finds the confidence to become a tourist guide and interact easily with travellers from around the world.

"Farmer" shows how an agriculturist in a remote village preserves many varieties of organic seeds and turns his farm into a destination for visitors.

In "Chefs", a group of homemakers turn themselves into successful entrepreneurs and culinary experts admired by tourists.

The three films, which highlight the 'responsible tourism' slogan "Better Together", were shot in picturesque villages around Kumarakom, Wayanad and Alappuzha.

Odisha artist makes Konark temple sand sculpture in London

Sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik promoted Odisha tourism abroad by creating a sand sculpture of a miniature of Konark sun temple at the World Travel Market in London, the artist said Friday.

Pattnaik, who is a native of Odisha's beach town of Puri, about 56 kms from state capital Bhubaneswar, said he created a sand sculpture of 13th century Konark sun temple by using one bag of sand.

"The miniature of Kornark was the main attraction for tourists. The Konark temple, popularly known as Black Pagoda is the only UNESCO world heritage site in Odisha," Pattnaik told IANS on the phone from London.

"I am honoured to be a part of Odisha tourism and I am trying to attract people to Odisha through my sand art," he added.

Pattnaik was conferred with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, this year.

The World Travel Market event was held Nov 3-6 and is a leading annual global event for the travel industry.

World Travel Market 2014 interview Gordana Plamenac, Serbia

At the World Travel Market 2014 in London, the leading event for the global travel industry, euronews spoke to Ms Gordana Plamenac, CEO/Managing Director of the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia about how Serbia can promote itself a reputation as tourist destination, despite the bad reputation the country earned through the wars in the Balkans. Video in English.

I just spoke to some of the journalists recently from France for instance and from Germany and I said what they would identify as the strongest assets of the Serbian tourism offer. And they both said on different occasions that hospitality is something that one does not expect but that as a fact hospitality and friendliness is the strongest asset. The image that we gained in the past 20 years really is not going in favor of what I just said but it is a fact, Serbs are really very friendly and hospitable people. Apart from Belgrade, there are mountain resorts, there are vast possibilities of activity holidays, cycling, hiking, canoeing, rafting, and this is something that we are offering. We have many mountain resorts but we also have six national parks and this is something that might be of great interest to foreign tourists.
