Travel books, for gifts or your own coffee table

NEW YORK (AP) Shopping, romance, bucket lists, inspiration and information: All of these things and more can be found in books for travelers that are out this season in time for the holidays. In addition to being gift-worthy, some of the titles make a nice addition to your own coffee-table collection; others are useful for trip planning or may serve as fodder for travel dreams.

111 Shops in New York That You Must Not Miss: Unique Finds and Local Treasures, by Susan Lusk and Mark Gabor (Emons Publishers, $20), is a fun guide to retailers around the city, from well-known emporiums like Eataly and ABC Carpet & Home, to unusual specialty shops selling books, vintage jewelry, skateboards, hats, lingerie and more.

Places for Passion: The 75 Most Romantic Destinations in the World by Pepper Schwartz and Janet Lever (Frommers, $23) offers inspiration for couples getaways from sophisticated cities and exotic destinations to beaches, resorts and outdoor adventures around the world. Schwartz, a love and relationship expert for AARP, is also one of the experts on A&E Networks FYI channels reality series Married at First Sight.

Worlds Best Cities: Celebrating 220 Great Destinations (National Geographic, $40) is a gorgeously illustrated hardcover book that offers an inviting glance at cities around the world from New York to Abu Dhabi, along with curated lists of best cities in categories like eco-smart, oceanfront, high-altitude and all-American.

You Only Live Once: A Lifetime of Experiences for the Explorer in All of Us (Lonely Planet, $30), also a lavishly illustrated hardcover, describes experiences rather than places, from tasting the worlds hottest chili peppers to the best birding, safaris, train rides and castles.

Other books out this season from Lonely Planet include Best in Travel 2015 ($15) with lists of top countries, cities, regions, freebies and more for the new year; The Best Place to Be Today ($20), with a recommendation for every day of the year; and Best Ever Travel Tips ($10), a small, cute flip book that offers advice on how to book trips, how to complain, how to stay healthy and even what to bring - like a $20 Casio F91-W watch straight out of 1981 that works for ages and will never be stolen.

Finally, a travel book that doesnt fit neatly into the usual categories: Travel: The Guide by Doug Lansky (ebook, $5, hardcover, $60). This guide wont provide hotel suggestions, give you packing tips, or tell you where to go, Lansky writes. Instead, this book aspires to hold a mirror up to our travel behavior. So, with colorful photos and clever graphics, the book offers interesting factoids on topics like travel safety (road accidents are the leading cause of tourist deaths worldwide); accounts of what its like to travel in a wheelchair or if youre overweight; and photo comparisons of English breakfasts served by airlines worldwide.

Tourism in Europe at record levels – ITB World Travel Trends Report

Foreign trips by Europeans at record levels increase in international arrivals in Europe further growth expected in 2015

Travel-hungry Europeans are defying local crises and political unrest, having undertaken record numbers of trips this year. Compared to last year, in 2014 the number of foreign trips rose by three per cent, reaching a new record. According to the ITB World Travel Trends Report, conducted by IPK International and commissioned by the world's leading travel trade show, destinations such as Greece, Spain and the UK profited from this boom. All signs point to growth in 2015 as well.

Europeans refused to be deterred from travelling this year. Despite Europe's weak economic growth and risks such as the crisis in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East and the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa Europeans travelled longer distances and more often. Compared to last year there was a three per cent rise in foreign trips, which on average were shorter. By contrast, spending per overnight grew by four per cent. Among Europeans the internet became an increasingly popular tool for making reservations. Bookings via this medium rose by seven per cent, while travel agency figures stagnated. During the first eight months of 2014 holiday trips grew by five per cent, with city breaks registering a major increase (10 per cent). By contrast, holidays in the snow and the countryside registered declines. Business travel increased by a mere one per cent. However, a new trend has emerged: at plus four pent, MICE travel has become increasingly popular, whereas conventional business trips fell by three per cent due to budget constraints.

This year, source markets reporting a substantial increase in foreign trips included Switzerland (plus seven per cent), Denmark and Poland (both six per cent each), as well as Sweden, Spain and the UK, (all plus five per cent). Spain aside, none of the most successful source markets belonged to the eurozone. Germany, Europe's largest source market, registered two per cent growth. At plus three and two per cent respectively, the Italian and French markets recovered despite their countries' weak economies. This year the Russian market declined by one per cent, which was due also to the numerous challenges it faced.

This year the number of trips undertaken in Europe, by far the largest market in terms of volume, grew by three per cent. In 2014 long-distance travel was even more popular with Europeans. Thus, during the first eight months of this year the number of trips to Asia increased by seven per cent, those to North America and the Caribbean by six per cent, and trips by Europeans to South America and the Pacific grew by five per cent. The number of trips to Africa also increased slightly. However, further developments must be awaited due to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Europeans are confident as regards their travel plans for 2015. Overall, foreign trips undertaken by Europeans are expected to rise by three per cent, which could herald another year of solid growth. At plus seven per cent, the UK would appear to be among the fastest-growing source markets, along with those of Switzerland, Poland and Russia at an estimated four per cent each. Foreign trips undertaken by the German market are forecast to rise by two per cent.

Once again, Europe was a very popular travel destination and reported double-digit growth in visitors from China, India and the United Arab Emirates. This year, Europe was also very popular with travellers from the USA and Canada.

Overall, during the first eight months of this year the number of international tourist arrivals in Europe rose to 413 million, an increase of 4.2 per cent. Southern and Northern Europe both registered the highest growth rates, at plus seven per cent respectively. Countries ahead in the rankings included Greece, Spain, Turkey, Germany and the UK.

All the findings are based on information from papers held at the World Travel Monitor Forum in Pisa, which is sponsored by ITB Berlin. Every year the consultancy IPK International invites more than 50 tourism experts and researchers from around the world to present the latest statistics and trends in international tourism.

Other results of the January to August 2014 trend surveys conducted by IPK as well as the assessments of more than 50 tourism experts from over 20 countries and the core data of the World Travel Monitor will be published exclusively by ITB Berlin. Detailed information will be available in the ITB World Travel Trends Report in early December at http://www.itb-berlin.com. At the ITB Future Day of the ITB Berlin Convention Rolf Freitag, president of IPK International, will present the findings of the World Travel Monitor for the entire year, as well as the latest forecasts for 2015. The World Travel Monitor is based on the findings of representative interviews carried out with more than 500,000 people in over 60 global travel markets. It has been published regularly for more than 20 years and is recognised as the most widescale continuous survey examining global travel trends.

Youre sitting there, poring over travel brochures looking for an exciting new cultural experience before checkingyour dwindling bank balance and chucking them all in the bin.Or maybe you just dont have the time to jet off on an exotic holiday next year?Dont get your travel socks in a twist, its possible to experience some of the best ofwhat the world has to offer, without even leaving the capital.

Londons well known for its fantastic markets. But for something completely different try the authentically South American one in Seven Sisters. Its known locally as Pueblito Paisa and has been the beating heart of Londons South American community for decades. Stepping inside feels like youve actually been transported to Bogota. Latin beats blare, buzzingrestaurants serve up hearty Colombian soups, meats and empanadas, ladies get their nails done, guys drink beer while watching the football direct from South America. Spanish is spoken everywhere. The market is mainly Colombian, although other Latin countries are also represented.

Another fantastic option for multicultural adventuring is Ridley Road in Dalston. A hive of Ghanaian, Nigerian, Turkish, Bangladeshi and many other nationalities, its raw, yet brilliant. Dont think you need to go thousandsof miles to encounter a glazed sheeps head, or pick up a dried catfish. Its right here.

Of course there is Brick Lane, Chinatown and Brixton market but we feel they lack the raw authenticity of Seven Sisters and Ridley Road.

There are some incredible religious buildings in London. For the largest Hindu temple outside of India, head to Neasden Temple its hand-carved fromItalian marble and is an incredible work of art. Theres also Wat Buddhapadipa, an authentic Thai Buddhist temple in Wimbledon. The Greek Orthodox church, St Sophias on Moscow Street has incredible mosaics. The Central London Mosque wouldnt look out of place in the Middle East, the golden domes looking spectacular against the Regents Park greenery.

We all know that London is awash with restaurants representing cuisine from all over the world. But where to go for something really authentic or different which isnt just inhabited by Shoreditch hipsters? TryCentro Gallego which also doubles as the Galician social club on the Harrow Road (much better than the overpriced touristy tapas of central London). Or try the Palace for authentic Korean food in Londons Koreatown(thatsNew Malden to you and me). TheresGold Coast in South Norwood for Ghanaian delights (and awesome parties), el Rincon Quinteno on Holloway Road for a little slice of Ecuador, and Mestizo near Warren Street is the Mexican where actual Mexicans go. For something uniquely Central Asian try Kazakh Kyrgyz in Camberwell its decked out in beautiful Silk Road-style upholstery and has live belly dancing most Fridays.For even more suggestions, weve rounded-up the best food and drink options in London, bynationality.

Get even more intimate with great tastes of global flavours with some of the capitals excellent supper clubs.
