Where to Go Now: 3 Top Travel Destinations for 2015

Travel is back, and in a big way: according to a recent report by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the tourism agency of the United Nations, international tourism hit a new record in 2014, with over 1.1 billion travelers traversing the globe. And while conventional wisdom says the world is getting smaller, the list of potential destinations for passionate travelers continues to grow. While a quick Google Google search reveals the list of recommendations is seemingly endless, here are the three top places on my 2015 travel wish list. While the selection process was relatively unscientific, there are a host of compelling reasons to visit them in the year ahead, not the least of which is that they remain largely undiscoveredbut not for long.

Montenegro is fast emerging as one of the most picturesque and luxurious destinations in Europe.

Montenegro: Long overshadowed by Croatia, its captivating neighbor to the west, Montenegro is poised to become a world-class luxury travel destination thanks to its idyllic, 180-mile-plus coastline and rugged interior dotted with river canyons, glacial lakes and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the singularly spectacular Durmitor National Park. Already home to the stunning Aman Sveti Stefan resort, which hosted the wedding of Novak Djokovic in July, the Balkan country is luring other top-tier operators, including the esteemed One&Only chain, which will open its first European propert in Kumbor on Tivat Bay in 2016. Meanwhile, on the UNESCO-protected Bay of Kotor, Porto Montenegro, whose chief investor is Barrick Gold founder Peter Munk, is vying for the title of Europes leading marina, with berths up to 180 meters to accommodate superyachts; tax and duty-free fuel at 45% discount versus countries within the EU is another incentive sure to lureuber-wealthy mariners.

Namibia: Celebrating its 25th anniversary as an independent nation this year, Namibia is arguably the jewel of Africa, and an example to the continentand the worldof the power of sustainable development. It was the first African country to incorporate protection of the environment into its constitution; the government has reinforced conservation efforts by giving its communities the opportunity and rights to manage their wildlife through communal conservancies. Today, over 43% of Namibias surface area is under conservation management, and the program has facilitated a remarkable recovery of wildlife: Namibia now boasts the largest population of black rhinos and cheetahs in the world and is the only country with an expanding population of free-roaming lions, leading some to call Namibias conservation efforts the greatest African wildlife recovery story ever told. The country is also home to the largest sand dune in the world, Soussusvlei, and Fish River Canyon, the largest canyon in Africa.

The old town of Vilnius in Lithuania is one of the largest and most dazzling in Eastern Europe.

Lithuania: This former Soviet Republic, located east of Sweden and Denmark, will become a card-carrying member of the Eurozone starting January 1, 2015which means traveling there is about to become a whole lot easier (think lots of ATMs, easier electronic payments, and a familiar currency). Its also home to three UNECO World Heritage sites, including the old town of capital city Vilnius, a Baroque masterpiece and one of the largest old towns in Central and Eastern Europe; and the Curonian Spit, a 60-mile peninsula of spectacular beaches stretching south into Russias Kaliningrad exclave. Once heavily forested, its now the pride of the country and backed by Europes largest moving sand dune.

EYVoice: Travel And Hospitality Trends for 2015

By Howard Roth, Global Real Estate Leader EY

Long gone are the days when luxury travel was a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Todays consumers have more access to these services thanks to disruptive low-cost airlines and mobile booking sites.

Recently, Ive spoken with several travel providers who are racing to enhance the consumer experience, win new business and, ultimately, customer loyalty. Here are some highlights from those hospitality and travel leaders:

Supply, meet demand

Travel and tourism make up 9% of global GDP, and the industry is the worlds largest employer, responsible for one in 11 jobs. However, as big as the industry is, it has the potential to be a lot bigger. Within the next decade, it is anticipated that this industry will create an additional 75 million jobs. Look at the numbers and youll see why: the tourist population has doubled in the past 20 years and is expected to double again over the next 20 (reflecting the same increases in the middle-class population).

Customer demands, theyre a-changing

Such tremendous growth has changed the face of the travel and tourism industry. As more capital flows from east to west, as the middle class continues its surge, and as the Millennial generation which within 10 years will be in its peak earning, spending and travel years demands faster, customized services, many accommodation providers have moved toward a model that caters to these changing demographics.

Mobile travel services will continue to be a hot platform, as will social media, digital innovation and analytics tools in a bid to engage customers and build loyalty. By using the information captured by these tools, differentiated experiences are created, which motivate customers to visit more frequently, stay longer and spend more. Hotels, trending public

Recent hotel IPOs in the US have largely been driven by major private equity players. Several years of steady revenue growth and limited additions to supply have enhanced investor confidence, particularly where a dynamic growth story exists for the future. Other large, private owners have clearly taken notice, and this hotel IPO and venture capital trend will likely continue for large portfolio owners with the right economics and growth stories.

Hilton Worldwide, which in 2007 agreed to an all-cash buyout by the Blackstone Group, is a great example of the benefit of leveraging private equity funding. Chris Nassetta, President and CEO, shared with us his own experience. Since taking the buyout, he said, We have become the fastest-growing lodging company in the world with growth in rooms at 37%. We have the largest pipeline in our history, with nearly 200,000, and more new rooms under construction than anyone else in the industry. Most importantly, weve received a great reception upon our return to the public markets and are feeling very positive.

How to travel the world and get rich

Natalie Sisson: digital nomad.

Last year "suitcase entrepreneur" Natalie Sisson visited 15 countries, ran a thriving online business and also found time to write four books, including a bestseller.

This year she intended to ease up a little on the international travel, but already has plans to add at least 10 stamps to her passport.

Sisson combines her love of adventure with building her online business and staging coaching workshops around the world.

Among other things, she'll play Ultimate Frisbee in the Philippines, speak at an event in Sweden, hold a business "mastermind" retreat in Spain, whip through London and spend a chunk of time exploring Japan.

Sisson, now 36, was working in London in 2008 when she became fed up with a long daily commute, "lots of bureaucracy" and being stonewalled at every turn in her well-paid London role.

Taking a leap of faith, she quit and went to Vancouver to compete in the Ultimate Frisbee world championships. While attending a business networking event in the city, she met a like-minded entrepreneur and the pair founded charity app FundRazr.

After "the best 18 months of education that money could never buy", Sisson turned her attention to building a business that would help others learn to escape the confines of an office, and also be able to run their businesses from anywhere.

In four years of running her own show, Sisson has increasingly been able to combine her love of adventure with building her online business and staging coaching workshops around the world.

Mobile phones will change the way we travel in 2015

Donald Strachan Dec 30 2014 at 8:56 AM

For full functionality of this site it is necessary to enable JavaScript. Here are the instructions how to enable JavaScript in your web browser.

Travel takes us all over the world, but its key technology battles are happening in your pocket. Mobile use is booming. During 2014, Skyscanner flight searches from hand-held devices have grown by 152 per cent, according to the company. Mobiles will become ever more important, particularly as last-minute and in-destination booking booms.

Gone roaming

Of course, a mobile phone is useless if you can't afford to use it. I have written regularly this year about roaming, including how to avoid charges with apps such as Roamer (Android, iOS;roamerapp.com). Roaming will continue to be an issue, but welcome changes may arrive for European travellers. In April, the European Parliament voted to end roaming charges within the EU by December 2015. Details are still to be confirmed.

The convergence between phone and wallet will accelerate. It is not yet clear when Apple's mobile payments system, Apple Pay, will come to Australia. In Britain, Zapp is working with banks and retailers to add a mobile payment capability to existing UK banking apps. Zapp's service will launch in 2015.

Pay as you go

Some travel apps already have a built-in payment function, including taxi services such as Uber and Hailo and last-minute hotel service HotelTonight. Restaurant app OpenTable (Android, iOS;opentable.co.uk) is trialling payment direct from its app in several US cities, including New York and San Francisco. Set to launch in London, new restaurant app Reserve (iOS;reserve.com) also enables diners to settle their bill in-app. Paying with your phone will become more mainstream in 2015.

Wear it's at

There is already plenty of buzz about "wearable technology", particularly smart watches. The Apple Watch launches in 2015, but Android Wear devices including the Motorola Moto 360 are already on sale. Travel apps will learn how to make best use of this new hardware. For example, clever itinerary management app TripCase (Android, iOS;tripcase.com) automatically notifies a connected watch if your flight is delayed, cancelled or even if the departure gate changes. One of my favourite apps, Rain Alarm (Android, iOS, Windows Phone;rain-alarm.com), also works smoothly with Android Wear. My watch simply vibrates when rain is heading my way. More travel apps will work in tandem with smart watches by this time next year.

Back to the future for your travels

In 35 years, travellers can expect to interact with robots, holograms and Star Trek-like cyber reps instead of humans for their travel needs. Holidays via virtual reality headsets and fingerprint passports are also expected to transform the travel experience.

These are among some of the predictions that came out of an industry report from Euromonitor, which was presented at the World Travel Market (WTM) trade show in London.

In a survey that polled about 1,230 senior executives of the travel industry, more than half (59 per cent) agree that robots or holographic images are likely to displace human reps in the resorts of the future.

And though the public isn't as convinced - only 13 per cent of holidaymakers polled said holograms will be used - experts point out that the technology already exists, though in a more primitive form.

The iPhones virtual assistant Siri, for example, already carries out the tasks of a concierge by directing users to the nearest museum, hailing a cab or making restaurant reservations.

In September, developer IPsoft also launched an artificially intelligent computer system called Amelia, that can understand text and solve problems, and which will be embedded in humanoid robots, researchers point out.

"Androids and holograms being part of everyday life is still science fiction - yet much of the technology is already available so I am sure they will become science fact," said WTM's senior director, Simon Press.

Likewise, another landmark report released from Skyscanner this year also predicts that the future of flying will entail 3D-type chats with holographic images of spouses and children beamed into airplane cabins.

In their Future Of Travel 2024 report, experts predict that airports will be staffed with holograms rather than humans.

The advances in virtual reality technology - think Oculus Rift - are also predicted to give virtual travel a larger role in the travel-planning process.

On the Road: Travel part of surfing world titles for Stephanie Gilmore

Stephanie Gilmore doesnt have time for jet lag. Winning her sixth surfing world title has been keeping her too busy for that sort of thing.

The Australian riding atop the surfing world tells Edge that immediately falling into the routine of a regular dayat whichever time she arrives at a new destinationhelps her to adjust. I dont really believe in jet lagthats what I tell myself anywayit is all in your head, Gilmore says. When I take off, I set my mind to the time of my destination and work from there. I guess I travel so frequently that I'm just used to it.

While the 26-year-old surfer may be accustomed to travel fatiguedrinking tons of water is an extra tipand to winning surfing titles, getting used to packing never gets easy.

With trips varying in length anywhere from five days to three months for a surfer, Gilmore figures she averages a month gone per trip. And usually she has to make three stops before returning home, which can make packing a nightmare.

The most difficult trips are those that go from tropical surf [locales] that only require bikinis and then onto a winter city, she says, noting the weight and heft of a wetsuit. Variation of climate kills the packing process.

Stephanie Gilmore is a five-time champion on the ASP World Tour, claiming four of those titles consecutively (2007-2010). The Australian surfer has carved out a career that began with a 2005 Roxy Pro Gold Coast win, then she appeared in ESPN's Body Issue and won an ESPY in 2011 for Best Female Action Sport Athlete. For a look into the life of one of the most talented surfers in the sport, follow Stephanie Gilmore onInstagram @stephaniegilmore.

Along with the needed range of clothes, Gilmores must-haves include sun protection and different body creams, her Roxy bikinis and board shorts and her mix of Nikon cameras and lenses to document the crazy beautiful corners of the globe Im lucky enough to see.

Once on the ground, after adjusting to the new time of day, Gilmore says she keeps a tight diet. While she tries to eat local delicaciesone of her favorite things when travelingboth to eat local and in season to reduce her footprint and get the highest nutritional value, she has some supplemental nutrition along for the ride.

While she watches her diet closely and varies her meals based on her location, she does the same with workouts. If Gilmore finds herself near a beach, she surfs a couple of times a day for her workout. In a city? Find the hotel gym.

When I have time away from the beach I like to stretch a lot and give my body a rest, she says.
