The incredible rise of Dubai as the world's air travel hub

Dubai is also leading 2014 (January-September) in terms of international passengers, with a shade more than 52 million until the end of the same month, compared to 51.7m for Heathrow.

Paul Griffiths, the chief executive of Dubai Airports, said he was confident statistics would show the airport had ended 2014 with more than 70 million passengers, confirming its place as the worlds busiest international hub.

It seals a rise that has been predicted for some time, but remains astonishing despite its inevitability.

Back in 2008, the then chief executive of British Airways, Willie Walsh, warned that Dubais plan was to become the hub that links the worlds biggest aviation market, North America, with its fastest-growing, Asia and this link would bypass Europe altogether.

How Dubai pipped Heathrow

Statistics from Airports Council International; 2020 shows projected figures

Yet the airport had only started appearing among the worlds 30 busiest airports the previous year, in 2007, when 34.3m passengers passed through. As several Middle Eastern airports and airlines competed for a greater slice of the aviation market (see our 2008 story, Middle East special: The new golden age for air travel), Dubai was by then clearly standing out.

In 2008, the airport opened its Emirates Terminal 3, the worlds largest passenger terminal (and the second busiest terminal in the world).

Opened exclusively for Emirates flights, which accounts for around 50 per cent of Dubais passengers, it doubled the airports capacity.

The number of passengers arriving in the city since 2008 has indeed increased twofold, and the rapid expansion shows little sign of slowing down.

Wearable tech set to go mainstream among travellers

According to "The Global Trends Report", which is created exclusively for the "World Travel Market" event by Euromonitor International's travel and tourism research team, travel technology, and especially wearable electronic tools - accessories incorporating computer and advanced electronic technologies and designed to incorporate practical functions and features - will erupt in tourism business, as they become an important way for travellers to connect with the Internet while on the go.

The report states that wearable Internet-connected devices will allow travellers to constantly receive notifications and services during their trip, as well as make bookings.

Furthermore, the technology represents a challenge for travel companies, which will need to build a flexible technological architecture to follow their customers from one device to another.

Simon Press, World Travel Market's senior exhibition director, said in November at the annual global travel show in London that wearable-electronics technology was now expected to go mainstream by 2016.

The Internet-connected devices are expected to soar from 9 million units sold globally in 2013 to a forecast 180 million in 2016.

Products currently on sale include the Sony SmartWatch, Samsung Galaxy Gear and Google Glass.

Google has also developed Android Wear software for wearable electronics, while the Apple Watch will go on sale early this year and is expected to take the sector by storm, as other Apple products have done for smart phones and tablets.

Asian trends

Meanwhile, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation estimates that more than 500 million tourists travelled to Asia last year, and that the number will continue to surge this year, with China leading the swell.

With the growth of inbound and outbound tourists in the Asia-Pacific region, international arrivals into Asia are increasing by 6.3 per cent per year, higher than the world average of 5.3 per cent.

Washington Native Plans Trip to Break Record, Bring Peace

WASHINGTON, Conn. - Cassandra De Pecol may be just 25 but shes got big plans to break a world record, to travel the globe, to work for world peace and inspire young people to live their dreams.

The Washington, Conn., native will be working on all those goals when she leaves July 1 to visit all 195 of the worlds sovereign nations. She hopes to break the Guinness World Record for fastest time to visit all sovereign nations by completing the trip in under three years. She would also be the youngest person and the first woman to do it.

Though she holds dual citizenship in both Canada and the United States, De Pecol will be traveling as a global citizen, with the endorsement of the International Institute of Peace Through Tourism. She will be honored at the nonprofit groups upcoming World Symposium in South Africa.

That organization will provide contacts and arrange meetings with officials in each of the countries she will visit, De Pecol said.

The president [of IIPT] works with ministers of tourism in 89 countries throughout the world. Ill be meeting with them and then in the remainder, with mayors of either villages or communities or even cities hell get me in touch with them as well, she explained.

Im going to be presenting to them a declaration of peace, doing photo ops and meeting with children and people of my generation, discussing world peace and what it means to them.

But one of the means through which De Pecol hopes to promote peace will occur after her trip, when a documentary is released. The documentary, which will be shown in theaters and on Netflix, will be paired with other materials to serve as a tool kit for high school and college classes, she said. De Pecol also plans to visit schools and speak about her travels and world peace, while she also urges them to live their dreams.

Im not necessarily wanting to inspire people to do what Im doing I dont expect everyone to pack up and go travel the world but just to follow their dreams and not be stuck in miniscule things, their job if theyre not happy, she said. Im hoping to influence people in my generation to pursue what they want and live a fulfilled life.

De Pecol is already known to some through her role on the Discovery Channel show, Naked and Afraid, during which she survived a 21-day challenge in the Panamanian wilderness.

And thats not the only wild adventure shes had. Since 2009, De Pecol has traveled to the Amazon, Turkey, Italy, Egypt and several other countries while doing internships in renewable hospitality at hotels across the world. Continued...

Travel letters: World's fairs remain a universal delight

In talking about Expo 2015 in his article "Where to Head Next" [Dec. 28], Christopher Reynolds asserts that "world's fairs aren't the world-shaking spectacles they used to be." I respectfully disagree.

Universal expositions, which are held every five years, are as relevant and popular as ever. In fact, the last fair, in Shanghai in 2010, attracted 73 million people. Compare that with the number of people who attended the London 2012 Olympics just over 9 million.

Because our country let its membership lapse in the Bureau of International Expositions the equivalent of the Olympic Committee and the fact that a fair hasn't happened in our country since 1984, Americans have largely forgotten about world's fairs.

That 147 nations are participating in Milan, Italy, proves that, indeed, bringing people together to showcase a country's people, industry and most of all, their ideals, remains relevant.

London letdown

Good article on London at the holidays and accurate, but you owe it to your readers to warn them that London is stone dead around Christmas ["London Glows at Christmas" by Darren Loucaides, Dec. 21]. Many restaurants are closed, except at some of the larger hotels.

The streets are empty, and there are very few taxis to be found. No concerts.

We visited during Christmas years ago and stayed at a hotel near the American Embassy in Mayfair. Its only restaurant open had all the charm of your local Denny's, and the menu was pretty sparse.

Metroparks showcase world travel

Published: Friday, 1/2/2015 - Updated: 54 seconds ago

BY MARK REITER BLADE STAFF WRITER

For those looking to combat cabin fever this winter and travel vicariously around the globe, the Travel Circle programs will be held on Saturdays for the next 13 weeks.

The programs, sponsored by the Metroparks of the Toledo Area and Maumee Valley Adventurers, provide narrations and photo presentations on places ranging from national parks to exotic cruises.

Scott Carpenter, the metroparks districts spokesman, said the programs are planned for 2:15 to 3:30 p.m.

Travel Circle is one of the most popular programs we have, especially in the winter months, he said.

The free program is organized by the Maumee Valley Adventurers, formerly Hostelling International/Toledo Area Council. The group is a hiking, biking, and travel club and offers an optional one-hour hike or cross-country skiing before each presentation.

Organizer Mary Lou Leonard, a member of the nonprofit group, said each program will feature a talk on the travel experiences and photos or videos of local residents.

The presentations and narration run about 45 minutes and include questions and answers at the end.

Its a fun format and not real formal, she said. People who come are kind of the outdoorsy type and they love the outdoors. Most of our people like to travel.

Want to see the world? Heres some tips

PLANNING an overseas holiday can be a daunting task, but anyone who has nutted out their foreign land adventure knows it's worth it.

My Personal Travel Planner director Ainsley Hardie said the wealth of information could be discouraging.

"There is a lot to consider and for people to take into account," Mrs Hardie said.

"The internet can become overwhelming with the information available, so for us here, we're very much about listening to people and finding the place that they want to visit."

Mrs Hardie said the New Year period was typically a busy time for travel agents as people made plans to see more of the world.

"I think a lot of people over the Christmas and New Year period stop for a bit and they do start to think about what they want to do this year," she said.

"It's also a great time of the year to plan things because cruise lines have great deals and there are early bird specials through Europe.

"So it's a motivator to get in and get things organised while the big stuff (such as flights) are available."

Mrs Hardie said Toowoomba travellers' trends had changed in line with the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport opening.

"Europe, France, Italy, Turkey, Morocco and, of course, England are popular destinations for Toowoomba residents," she said.
