Travel Agent Weighs In on World Wide Travel Alert

In light of many safety concerns around the world right now.

We spoke to a local travel agency about whether or not it's impacting their business.

Satrom Travel and Tour says travelers should sign up for free programs like STEP, or the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, that will send them emergency alerts and other information from the US Embassy.

Satrom also encourages people traveling overseas to constantly be aware of their surroundings and pay close attention to news outlets while on their trip.

She says despite the recent attacks, she has not seen a decrease in the number of people planning trips.

"I think there could be some persons that might be deterred but overall people who are frequent travelers and have traveled overseas, I don't think this would stop them," Katherine Satrom, Pres. of Satrom Travel and Tour said.

The United States issued the worldwide travel alert after recent terrorists attacks in France.

Are travellers more open-minded than those who don't?

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts."

So said the oft-quoted Mark Twain, having recently visited the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The American writer's eyes had apparently been opened by his travels, his thoughts and ideas changed by the things he'd seen and the people he'd met overseas.

As an experience, it's something that must be as old as travel itself. Surely even the earliest explorers had their minds irrevocably changed by their treks into the great unknown. Everyone from Marco Polo to Captain Cook must have been forever altered in their assumptions and knowledge of the world.

Travel changes you. Anyone who's been away overseas for an extended period of time and come back to a reverse culture shock, to the realisation that nothing and no one in Australia has changed in the slightest, would understand this.

There's huge frustration when you come home to find that no one else has seen the things you've seen, and no one thinks the way you think. The world is an exciting, fascinating place. Travellers know this.

And that knowledge changes you. According to Twain it makes you a more tolerant, open-minded person. It removes your prejudices and makes you appreciate the essential similarities that everyone in the world shares.

I've always agreed with this point of view. I don't know how you could travel and keep a closed mind. So much of bigotry and xenophobia is a product of ignorance, a fear of people and places unknown.

Once you see those places, meet those people, the fear is taken away.

Page and Perspective: How You Can Travel The World On $50 A Day

Have book, will travel affordably. That's the promise of Matt Kepnes's new travel guide, How To Travel The World On $50 A Day: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Smarter (Perigee Trade, $15). He will tell you how it's done at Kramerbooks on Tuesday, January 13th at 6:30 p.m.

Kepnes is the vagabond behind Nomadic Matt, a blog based on helping people travel and the idea that it's possible to do so without much money. The belief that it isn't can be attributed to the travel industry, Kepnes says. He tells DCist, "Most people look at the ads they see online and in print and think, 'that's lovely but I can't afford that.' However, there are so many websites, apps, and companies out there that can help you find deals, that now is one of the best times to travel."

Kepnes wants to help readers navigate the options, and prove that "travel can be done cheaply without sacrificing comfort." He traveled overseas for the first time in 2004 and has been to over 70 countries since then. He shares many of the tricks he's picked up on his blog, but he wrote the book to "take what is in the blog and expand it" in more detail, with new tips, resources, and destination sections.

How To Travel The World On $50 A Day is divided into three extremely practical step-by-step sections for the apprehensive (or experienced) traveler. "Anyone can do it", Kepnes says, and "the book lays out the planning of a trip from start to finish in an easy-to-follow format."

"Planning Your Trip", "On-The-Road Expenses", and "Breaking It Down By Region" offer both logistical advice and insider "hacks", such as booking a cheap flight (hint: get a credit card that offers bonus flyer miles), the best travel backpacks, the best deal websites, and how to save money at every turn, all over the world.

If you're really looking to get the most bang for your buck, visit Southeast Asia, Kepnes tells DCist: "It's the most affordable region in the world. There's cheap food, accommodation, transportation, and lots of other travelers." Central America is also a great place to save more and travel longer.

And what essentials to pack as a budgeting traveler? "I always bring extra socks because they seem to disappear, a backup bank and credit card in case something goes wrong so you'll always have access to your money, and a good lock to keep your stuff locked up during the day or on overnight buses," Kepnes advises.

Kepnes's other books include How to Teach English Overseas, The Ultimate Guide To Travel Hacking, How To Build A Travel Blog, and How To Make Money With Your Travel Blog. He has been featured in The New York Times, CNN, The Guardian, Lifehacker, BBC, Time, and many other publications. When he isn't traveling, he lives in New York City.

At the Kramerbooks on Tuesday, Kepnes will speak about budget travel and how it has changed over the years, then take questions from the audience and sign books. The event is free to the public.

How Often Do Airbnb Employees Get To Travel The World And Use The Service?

This question originally appeared on Quora: How often do Airbnb employees get to travel the world and use the service?

Answer by Kyle Pickering, UI Designer at Airbnb, on Quora

I dont have specifics on how often Airbnb employees are traveling and using the service, but I can tell you its quite frequent. Whether its staying in an Airbnb far far away, or 20 minutes out of town for the weekend, we make the most of our travel credit.

By design, the travel credit program encourages travel. Employees are given travel credit at the beginning of each quarter. The credit expires at the end of each quarter. If you dont use it, you lose it. I think this is a great system because it pretty much forces us to go on adventures at least 4 times a year. Many employees go on more.

The travel credit obviously isnt just a perk. Its an important tool that gives us valuable insight into how we can improve and build on the experience.

The question asks how often Airbnb employees use the service, so I should mention that in addition to using the service as guests, many Airbnb employees also host. Hosting definitely helps us understand the product better, and it also enables more travel!

As far as working remotely while using the travel credit? Its pretty dependent on the team/project the individual is working on.

Strong dollar makes world travel cheaper for Americans

AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia, File FILE - In this Tuesday, March 22, 2011 file photo, tourists take pictures in front of Rome's ancient Colosseum. A strong U.S. dollar is making world travel cheaper for Americans in 2015.

DALLAS If you've been putting off a trip abroad because it's too expensive, start packing your bags.

A stronger dollar has reduced the price of travel, from a hotel room to a glass of beer, in much of Europe, Japan, India and elsewhere.

"This is one of the best times for Americans to travel in years," says Matt Kepnes, author of "How to Travel the World on $50 a Day" and other travel books.

WHY THE DOLLAR IS STRONG

Other economies are shaky, making their currencies less valuable. Europe is barely growing. Japan is already officially in recession. China's growth has slowed. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy has been chugging along, and the dollar has gained too. Many economists expect that steady U.S. growth will compel the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates later this year, making dollar investments more attractive and leading traders to sell other currencies and buy dollars.

WHAT IT MEANS

Let's say that in June you had a charming dinner for two in Paris for 75 euros. First, congratulations. Second, it cost $103 then; today it would be $89. Expensive countries may not be cheap, but at least they're more affordable now.

BEST BARGAINS

Thanks to the pound's decline, England is cheaper than it was six months ago. But the euro has slumped more, making most of continental Europe an even better bargain. Travel writer Kepnes says Greece is attractive right now because hotels and tour operators have been slashing prices to fill rooms. The same thing is happening in Portugal and parts of Spain.
