Youth wetland photos could win world travel

Young people from 15 to 24 are in with a chance to win international travel by entering the World Wetlands Day youth photo competition.

The Department of Conservation is encouraging young people to take a picture of their favourite wetland on their phone or camera, and upload it to the World Wetlands Day website between 2 February and 2 March 2015. The winner will receive a free flight to a famous wetland of their choice anywhere in the world, courtesy of Star Alliance Biosphere Connections.

World Wetlands Day on 2 February marks the adoption of the International Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2015 is Wetlands for our future; Te tirohanga mua m ng mria.

DOC Conservation Services Ranger Daniel Jack says Wetlands play an essential role in our environment including filtering and cleansing water, providing critical habitat for many plants and animals and acting as a natural shield to protect our landscape through absorbing water runoff and providing a controlled release of water to lakes, rivers and our coast. They are biodiversity hotspots and provide many recreational opportunities.

Wetlands can be broadly defined as areas where the presence of water is the primary factor controlling the environment and associated plant and animal life. There are a number of accessible places frequented by people that are classified as wetlands including, lakes, large reservoirs and estuaries.

Some of the most significant and stunning wetlands in the region are found at:

Lake Waihola -Waipori wetlands and Sinclair Wetlands

Approximately 33 km south of Dunedin, Lake Waihola, Lake Waipori and Sinclair Wetlands make up the most significant area of wetland habitat in Otago. The area is nationally and internationally recognised as a precious refuge for many threatened and endangered species of plant, fish and birds.

The Strengthening U.S. Dollar Means Huge Savings When Traveling Abroad

Our 25th Year of Retirement by Age 62

Authors Billy and Akaisha Kaderli retired at the age of 38 and have since traveled and lived all around the world. The Kaderlis are published authors on the subjects of personal finance and world travel.

At the age of 62, we're beginning our 25th year of financial independence. That's quite a feat!

From the beaches on Nevis, West Indies, to the shores of Phuket, Thailand, we have traveled extensively through the past two-and-a-half decades, and what a ride it's been! Young and strong in those early years, we were willing and able to tackle just about anything. Now we tend to be a bit more cautious, but we're not letting up. We still climb into the backs of pickup trucks and soak in volcanic hot pools. No one can take away the wonderful memories we've made, and we are filled with gratitude for all the miles and smiles.

What about you? How do you want to live the next five, ten, 20 years or more? Only you can decide what is best and how to get to your goal.

We were often told that retiring early couldn't be done and that we would fail. These self-supported 24 years have proven the naysayers wrong, and we believe that since we have done it, you can, too. In our books and on our website we share the tools we have used to get us here so that you, too, can create your own successful retirement, early or not.

No matter where you are on your retirement path, here are some time-tested tools we have used. Take advantage of what we know.

Track spending This is basic and oh-so-essential. When you track what you are spending, you know exactly where your money is going, and you're able to make decisions clearly and in real time about your cash outlay.

Throughout the day, take note of everything you spend, either on paper or with a smartphone app such as HomeBudget or Mint. Tracking your spending will be a big stress reliever, and your data entry takes only a couple of minutes a day.

How much do you want to spend per year? If your goal is to spend $30,000 annually, this gives you an $82 a day average to maintain. If you can afford to live on $60,000 a year, you have $164 a day to spend.

How To Save Money When Travelling To Any Destination

Spending a lot of money on holidays doesnt mean you will have a better time than someone who spends less. Ive been travelling the world for close to a decade on a budget and found that following a few simple tips makes it easy to travel on a budget and still have an amazing trip.

Saving money on the road requires us to break away from a conventional mindset that travel is expensive. This mindset is pushed by a travel industry built on people spending more money, that tells us that we need to stay in hotels, eat at world-class restaurants, or go on packaged tours to have a good time. Of course, thats just not the case, and there are plenty of ways to have a good tripwithout spending a fortune.

Below are various ways to save in any destination around the world from cheaper locales like Thailand to more expensive countries like Norway. They will save you big money with minimal effort. Ive traveled to over 75 countries in the last eight years. I even wrote a book on budget travel called How to Travel the World on $50 a Day. I know how unbelievable it can sound to say you can travel the world on a budget comfortably, but I know its possible because Ive done it firsthand. Below are some of the best ways to save money in any destination because when you spend less, you can travel more.

When you dont need a luxury suite, there are a variety of options for finding housing that wont cost you much. Whether you work in exchange for room and board or simply find a cheap hostel, here are a few alternatives to hotels.

The best way to save on accommodation is not paying for it and a hospitality exchange allows you to do exactly that. Youve probably heard of couch surfing, but there are more options than that. Hospitality exchange services connect travellers with locals offering a free place to stay. Sometimes its a bed, sometimes its a couch, and sometimes its literally just space on the floor. These sites work by having users sign up, create profiles, and connect with each other. The expectation is that one day, those who were hosted will pay it forward and host someone else. Youre not required to host anyone in the future, but most people find the experience of being hosted rewarding and do host others. There are four major hospitality exchange organisations:

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, or WWOOFing, matches people looking for work on farms with farms that need labour. You get free room and board in exchange for work! Its an incredible way to stay in one area for free. You dont need any farm experience either. There is no international WWOOF membership, so youll have to buy a membership from each individual WWOOFing countrys organisation. Annual membership usually costs around $US30 per country. Obviously this solution isnt for everyone and is limited to certain areas, but it can be a good way to gain interesting experience while saving money.

House sitting is exactly like it sounds while someone else is on holiday, you watch their house and take care of any pets they have while they are gone. House sitting commitments tend to be long term (i.e. a month or more) and are suited for travellers who want to stay longer in one specific place. The biggest house sitting websites are:

Perhaps the most common solution for travellers looking to save money, hostels are one of the cheapest forms of paid accommodation in the world. Hostels are places that offer shared (and sometimes private) rooms for travellers looking for a cheap place to stay. These dormitory-style rooms usually have between four and 20 beds. The more beds, the cheaper the room.

Hostel prices are about a third of the cost of a hotel room. A cheap hotel in New York City is $US100 USD, while a dorm room is $US30. In Thailand, where a hotel is $US30 USD or more, you can get a cheap dorm room for $US5. In Australia, a dorm room is $US25 USD versus $US110 for a hotel.

One option for group travellers, or even people travelling alone who arent interested in hostels, is serviced apartments. These are apartments owned, furnished, and taken care of by someone else that you rent like a hotel room. People list an extra room, couch, or property they own and want to make money from. Its like couch-surfing, except you pay for it and get your own space. There are many companies that will help you find these apartments around the world, such as:

Yes, we can live well and avoid climate disaster, says UK government

The world can enjoy higher standards of living and more travel, while drastically cutting emissions to avoid dangerous climate change but only with sweeping changes to our infrastructure, the natural world and agriculture, a new analysis has found.

The UK government analysis also assumes that billions of people will remain in dire poverty at mid-century, despite efforts to lift them to greater prosperity, as the population rises to an estimated nine billion people.

Dealing with greenhouse gas emissions will require a transformation of electricity generation, including an expansion of renewable energy and nuclear power, as well as more public transport and changes to the built environment, according to the key findings of the Global Calculator, an online software tool developed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc), with partners.

The calculator is intended to show the likely outcomes of a variety of choices that policymakers and the public can make to tackle global warming, such as investing in nuclear, insulating houses, making electrical appliances more efficient and using electric vehicles.

Some of the findings are likely to be controversial. The analysis suggests that to cope with the food demands of a rising population, much more land will need to be brought under cultivation, which could have harmful side effects on biodiversity, and genetically modified crops may be needed to boost yields.

Far more intensive agriculture will be necessary, with the amount of beef raised in confined systems vast cattle warehouses in which the animals rarely or never see grass accounting for as much as 15% of the global herd by mid-century. Consumers must also switch away from eating beef to poultry and vegetables.

The analysis also found that deforestation must be halted and the extent of forested land increased by between 5% and 15% by 2050 a mammoth task, given the failure of efforts so far to halt forest destruction.

However, the analysis depends on several key factors. For instance, within the emissions limits required to hold global warming to less than 2C above pre-industrial levels, in theory it ought to be possible for everyone in the world to travel 12,400 KM a year, up from an average of 8,300 KM a year at present.

Currently, people in the US travel an average of 16,000 KM a year, and in the EU about 10,000 KM, while the average Indian travels 6,000 KM and Chinese less than 2,000 KM a year. So the increases in air travel in the developed world seen in recent years, thanks to the proliferation of cheap flights, will have to be severely limited in future to stay within these levels.

Similarly, nutrition that fulfills our daily needs, of 2,100 calories a day, is possible for the entire planet, but is unlikely to reach everyone without a transformation in global equity. According to the models used to develop the calculator, billions of people are likely to remain in poverty at mid-century, and they are unlikely to benefit much in the form of the better nutrition, better housing or increases in travel which are theoretically possible.
