Meet the world's ultimate checklist traveler

Few have seen as many as Gary Arndt.

It's been nearly eight years since the founder of travel blog Everything-everywhere.com sold his house to hit the road as a full-time traveler.

Since then, the Wisconsin native has been to 291 UNESCO World Heritage Sites -- a feat achieved by visiting all seven continents, more than 170 countries and territories, every state and territory in the United States, every Canadian province and every Australian state.

Now a well-known fixture in the travel blogging world, Arndt made a name for himself by capturing award-winning photos of his journeys -- he says he learned to shoot on his own through trial and error -- with World Heritage Sites being a particular area of expertise.

Originally, however, visiting so many UNESCO-listed sites wasn't on his mind when he set out to see the world in March 2007.

"I'm not even sure I was aware of the list until after I had been to Volcanoes National Park [Hawaii], which is what I list as my first World Heritage Site visit," he says.

"After a few months traveling, I was heading to New Zealand and I was aware that they had two sites on the list, so I made it a point to visit them.

"I then went way out of my way to visit East Rennell in the Solomon Islands, which is one of the least visited World Heritage Sites in the world."

It was at this point that he decided he'd try to make a meaningful visit to as many of the sites he could and document them for his readers.

He now has a dedicated page on which he maps his visits, with each link featuring a writeup and photo of the site.

WORLD TOURISM BY THE NUMBERS

More people are traveling worldwide, more of them are from China and many of them are heading to Europe, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization.

Tourist arrivals overall were up worldwide in 2014 over the previous year by an increase of 4.7 percent. The UNWTO said Europe was the most visited region in the world with over half the world's international tourists adding up to 588 million arrivals, an increase of 4 percent or 22 million overnight visitors over 2013. Biggest increases were in Northern Europe and Southern and Mediterranean Europe (7 percent), while Western European arrivals were up 2 percent. Arrivals in Central and Eastern Europe were unchanged after three years of increases.

China has been the world's largest outbound market since 2012. Outbound trips from China increased in 2014 by 11 million over the year before, bringing the country's outbound total to 109 million trips, the UNWTO said. Travel from Russia decreased 6 percent in 2014 while travel from Brazil grew by 2 percent, the WTO found.

International tourist arrivals in Asia and the Pacific increased 5 percent last year by 13 million to 263 million. North America saw an 8 percent increase in international tourist arrivals, and arrivals to Central and South America increased 6 percent, doubling their growth from the previous year and exceeding world averages.

The UNWTO said international tourist arrivals in the Middle East were up 4 percent, while Africa's international tourist numbers grew by an estimated 2 percent, an increase of about 1 million arrivals. The organization noted the continent saw more tourists despite the Ebola outbreak, but added that the findings were based on "limited and volatile data."

For 2015, the UNWTO is forecasting another increase in international tourist arrivals between 3 and 4 percent. The organization expects increased demand as the global economy improves, driven partly by a decline in oil prices.

Travel booking websites field millions of searches everywhere in the world, putting them in an ideal position for identifying trends and deals that is, if they can distill all that data into useful tips.

Kayak says it handles more than 1 billion travel booking searches annually, and the company's "Travel Hacker Guide," launched Monday, is an effort to do just that for North American travelers. The "hacks" included in the guide are meant to help people travel smarter.

Kayak ranked the top 10 trending destinations based on year-over-year increases in flight searches. Milan, where the World's Fair will take place this year, came in at No. 1.

KAYAK's new "Travel Hacker" tool provides insights on popular destinations as well as tips for getting the best deals.

A calendar feature displays average airfare, popular hotels and travel tips.

"We've made the data featured in the [guide] highly visual and easy to reference, which we know is ideal for travelers who are hungry for hacks to make trip planning as simple as possible," said David Solomito, North America brand director for Kayak.

The cities rounding out the trending list show the appeal of growing urban destinations.
