Germany has overtaken Japan as the worlds third-largest travel nation behind the USA and China in terms of the sectors economic impact, according to a new study by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). In 2014, the German travel sector contributed 258 billion to the countrys GDP and accounted for nearly five million jobs, and further growth of 2.4% and 1.9% respectively are forecast for 2015. This shows the strength of the travel industry which is growing more strongly and creating jobs faster than the overall German economy, the WTTC commented.
DER Touristik increased its revenues by 6.9% to 4.9 billion last year and plans to expand its online business, parent group Rewe announced as part of its 2014 financial results. The supermarket and retail store group increased overall turnover by 2.4% to 51.1 billion while operating profits improved by 29% to 468 million.
Germans plan to spend more on their holidays this year, according to a new TripAdvisor survey. Two out of every five respondents want to increase their travel spending, with the average cost of a two-person holiday rising by 300 to 6,700, the Ipsos survey of some 34,000 travellers in various countries, including 2,400 persons in Germany, found. Hoteliers are also optimistic about prospects for this year, with a high 75% saying they are very optimistic.

Jaan Albrecht will take over from long-serving Paul Schwaiger as head of leisure airline Sun Express, the Lufthansa Turkish Airlines joint venture, in June. Albrecht will move from Austrian Airlines, where he is currently CEO, to replace the 60-year-old Schwaiger, whose contract expires in the summer. Antalya-based Sun Express flies from various European countries to Turkey, while subsidiary Sun Express Germany flies from Germany to diverse Mediterranean destinations. From November onwards the airline will operate long-haul budget flights from Cologne for Eurowings, the new Lufthansa budget brand, under a wet lease agreement.
Sedat Tatli will take over management of DER Touristik brand Meiers Weltreisen in June. Currently product manager for Asia and the Indian Ocean, he will replace Matthias Rotter who has been appointed head of the overall DER Touristik Frankfurt business, which includes Dertour and ADAC Reisen.
German dynamic tour operator JT Touristik has increased the number of its sales partners to 10,000 and expects to add more travel agents to its distribution network in future. The Berlin-based company sold 28,000 holidays last year.

The World Travel & Tourism Council projects the world will welcome nearly 1.8 billion international visitor arrivals per year by 2025, a 58 percent increase from the 1.1 billion international arrivals who crossed borders in 2014.
These international tourists will certainly contribute to a travel industry experiencing faster growth than the wider global economy but the money tourists spend in their own countries continues dwarfing that of international tourists traveling abroad. This reality has long defined visitor spending in destinations and the status quo wont see significant changes in the near future, the World Travel & Tourism Council projects.
Considering global domestic travel spending made up 72 percent of travel and tourisms contribution to global GDP last year, the organization released forecasts this week which point to domestic travel spending growing slightly faster than foreign visitor spending in 2015, 3.7 percent vs. 2.8 percent and accounting for $3.7 trillion and $1.4 trillion, respectively, of the worlds total GDP.

The coveted FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy is set to travel more than 13,000 kms across Canada ending in Vancouver on May 31
OTTAWA, April 1, 2015 /CNW/ - Over 60 special guests joined the Hon. Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport); John Herdman, Head Coach of the Canadian National Women's Soccer Team; and current FIFA Women's World Cup winner Nozomi Yamago (Japan), to officially launch the FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola in Ottawa today. Over two months, the first-ever FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola will travel more than 13,000 kms, making 12 stops across Canada including Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.
"Coca-Cola is excited to bring Canadians their first up-close look at the official FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy in our nation's capital today," says John Guarino, President of Coca-Cola Refreshments Canada. "Over the next two months, the FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola will travel from coast-to-coast, bringingCanadians together in their passion for women's soccer and helping to inspire the next generation of female athletes."
As the most popular sport in the world, the beautiful game of soccer has been embraced by more than 270 million people1. In Canada, over 41 per cent of all registered soccer players are female and over 265,000 are youth players (18 and under)2. This is the first time the official FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy has toured a country prior to the tournament, giving Canadians an exclusive and rare chance to get up close and personal with this coveted prize leading up to the start of the tournament on June 6th.
"As a leading sport nation, Canada has an incredible sporting system that offers an overwhelming number of ways for Canadians to enjoy sport and active living," says the Hon. Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport)."As we prepare to celebrate the single largest women's sporting event right here at home, I hope Canadians take advantage of all of the opportunities they have to be involved in sport in Canada."
At each stop, fans will get a taste of the tournament at the custom-designed Fan Experience where they can go head-to-head with the Coca-Cola Ultimate Goalie, record a cheer for their favourite team at the Video Celebration, hang out in the FIFA locker room or TSN Sports Desk, play eight-person foosball and learn a trick or two from expert freestylers. The experience takes guests through the Winner's Tunnel, which leads the way to the trophy display where fans will get their photo with the official FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy. There will also be a special guest appearance from Official Mascot, Shume! Afterwards, guests will cap off their experience with a perfectly served, ice-cold Coca-Cola, Coke Zero or Diet Coke; each in a specially designed, limited edition, collectible aluminum bottle.
"I am honoured to have been invited to help launch the first FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola, representing Nadeshiko Japan. For me as a footballer, the Trophy is a symbol of passion, celebration and national pride and I am pleased that people across Canada will have the opportunity to witness it ahead of the FIFA Women's World Cup this year," said Nozomi Yamago, current FIFA Women's World Cup winner, Japan. "The FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy also represents the power women's football has today, promoting gender equality and inspiring social change. I hope that it will encourage many Canadian girls to join this beautiful game, just like the girls in Japan."

The world's oldest person has died a few weeks after celebrating her 117th birthday - after saying her life seemed 'rather short'.
Misao Okawa was surrounded by her family and staff at her nursing home in Osaka, Japan, as she died of heart failure on April 1.
Born on March 5, 1898, the great-grandmother had lived through two World Wars, the invention of the television and the first successful powered aeroplane flight by the Wright Brothers.
