How world travel helped a PEI author deal with grief – CBC.ca

A new P.E.I. book chronicles a journey around the world and through the heart, as the author struggles with grief following the still birth of her daughter.

Mo Duffy Cobb and her husband had often thought about taking a long journey, but the idea took on a new urgency in 2008. Their second daughter, Tya, was still born at 39 weeks.

"We were grief stricken. We were frustrated with the world, with P.E.I.," said Cobb.

Their certainty about the world and even their marriage was gone. They sold their house and packed off for Europe with their two-year-old daughter, Leila.

They started in Belgium, moved on to Germany and then England, and from there caught a plane to Singapore.

They were backpacking around the world with a toddler, and that was a challenge, but Cobb said it also opened up experiences that would otherwise be closed.

"I feel like she opened us up to the world even further, because it was really a family affair," she said.

"We got to meet so many people, moms and kids and working people and she really brought the trip alive for us. We wouldn't have had access to a lot of those young families. It was very play-based adventure."

From Singapore the family went on to Bali, Malaysia, Borneo, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

It was in Asia that Cobb found some of the solace she was looking for:new ways of thinking about the death of her daughter.

"Here in my living room in P.E.I. things were very black and white. Ty was here and then she was gone, and so I was expected to shut the door and move on," she said.

"Whereas when we got to Bali it was a totally different experience. The culture there with Hinduism, the influences there, every night people are leaving baskets of fruits and flowers, 'What are those baskets for?' 'Oh, they're for our ancestors.' It's a continual honouring of the people who are no longer with you."

After a nine-month journey the family returned to P.E.I., and settled down once again. They have two more children now.

"I think I did weave something in there that has a little bit of peace at the end," said Cobb.

Unpacked: From PEI to Palawan was published last month by Pottersfield Press.

Trump’s latest tweets will probably hurt effort to restore travel ban – Washington Post

(Jenny Starrs/The Washington Post)

President Trump on Monday derided the revised travel ban as a watered down version of the first and criticized his own Justice Departments handling of the case potentially hurting the administrations defense of the ban as the legal battle over it reaches a critical new stage.

Trump in a tweet called the new ban politically correct, ignoring the fact that he himself signed the executive order replacing the first ban with a revised version that targeted six, rather than seven, Muslim-majority countries and that blocked the issuance of new visas rather than revoking current ones.

Trump said the Justice Department should seek a much tougher version and made clear despite his press secretarys past remarks to the contrary that the executive order is a ban, not a pause on some sources of immigration or an enhanced vetting system.

People, the lawyers and the courts can call it whatever they want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is, a TRAVEL BAN! Trump wrote.

[Federal appeals court maintains freeze of Trumps travel ban. Attorney general vows Supreme Court appeal.]

The presidents tweets could significantly damage his administrations effort to restore the ban, which has been put on hold by two federal courts.

Next week, those suing are expected to file arguments on the matter with the Supreme Court, and Trumps latest remarks will surely be part of their briefs. The administration appealed to the nations highest court after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit upheld the freeze on the ban last month.

Neal Katyal, the lawyer who argued for the challengers in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, wrote on Twitter, Its kinda odd to have the defendant in HawaiivTrump acting as our co-counsel. We dont need the help but will take it! He also wrote that he was waiting now for the inevitable cover-my-tweet posts from him that the Solicitor General will no doubt insist upon.

Even George Conway, a prominent lawyer who recently took himself out of the running to lead the Justice Departments Civil Division and who is the husband of top Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, posted on Twitter that the remarks might hurt the legal case.

These tweets may make some ppl feel better, but they certainly wont help OSG get 5 votes in SCOTUS, which is what actually matters. Sad, he wrote, using abbreviations for Office of Solicitor General and the Supreme Court.

[Conway: Presidents tweets certainly wont help]

A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president was not at all concerned that his tweets might muddy the legal case, and his attention was instead on the substance of his executive order. She said she was not aware of any vetting of his tweets by lawyers or aides.

The president is very focused on exactly what that order spells out, and thats protecting Americans, protecting national security, and he has every constitutional authority to do that through that executive order and he maintains that, and that position hasnt changed in the slightest, Sanders said.

Trump himself indicated late in the day that he had no intention of backing down from his early morning sentiments, tweeting, Thats right, we need a TRAVEL BAN for certain DANGEROUS countries, not some politically correct term that wont help us protect our people!

Federal judges across the country have focused acutely on Trumps own comments in ordering that the ban be frozen, determining that the presidents words expose the measure as being a tool for discrimination disguised as a national security directive.

[President Trumps lawyers on revised travel ban repeatedly asked about campaign promises]

The majority opinion in the 4th Circuit maintaining the freeze on the ban quoted extensively from Trumps tweets and media interviews, and from those of his advisers. On the campaign trail, Trump called for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.

Omar C. Jadwat, the American Civil Liberties Union lawyer who argued the case in the 4th Circuit, wrote that Trumps tweets amounted to a promise: let me do this and Ill take it as license to do even worse. In an interview, Jadwat said the presidents tweets seem to undermine the picture the governments been trying to paint.

I cant say for sure what our brief is going to look like, but this stuff seems relevant, Jadwat said.

Government lawyers have sought to convince judges that they should not consider the presidents statements but instead limit their analysis to the text of the ban. They have also sought to portray the presidents words as campaign trail rhetoric, and noted that many of the remarks in question though not all came before Trump was elected.

We shouldnt start down the road of psychoanalyzing what people meant on the campaign trail, acting solicitor general Jeffrey B. Wall told judges at a recent court hearing in the 9th Circuit.

Trumps latest tweets which were later set to dramatic music and posted in a video on his Facebook page will provide those challenging the ban more examples of post-election remarks and a stronger case that Trumps revised travel ban had the same purpose as the original version.

That version, which unilaterally revoked the visas of tens of thousands of people from seven Muslim-majority countries, was seen as much harder to defend because it was more onerous and had a provision in the text that seemed designed to exempt Christian travelers.

Trump tweeted Monday that the Justice Department should have stayed with the original Travel Ban, not the watered down, politically correct version they submitted to the Supreme Court. In addition to creating possible headaches in court, that misstates the process. Trump signed the executive order imposing the ban. The Justice Department defends his policies in court.

Trump also wrote that the Justice Department should ask for an expedited hearing of the watered down Travel Ban before the Supreme Court & seek much tougher version! The Supreme Court would not be the body to enact a ban; the justices will be weighing whether Trumps order is constitutional.

The travel ban seems to have been on Trumps mind since the terrorist attack in London on Saturday, when Trump wrote on Twitter, We need to be smart, vigilant and tough. We need the courts to give us back our rights. We need the Travel Ban as an extra level of safety!

[Trump ramps up push for travel ban even as opposition hardens]

Legal analysts were quick to point out that the president was hurting his own case.

In case its not obvious, these will only undermine the governments case before #SCOTUS for both a stay & on the merits of the #TravelBan, University of Texas law professor Stephen Vladeck posted on Twitter. These will also go a long way toward mooting debate over use of campaign statements; no need when, as President, he still says these things.

Trump also wrote on Twitter that the administration was already EXTREME VETTING travelers coming into the United States which he said was necessary to keep the country safe because courts are slow and political! The Department of Homeland Security has previously suggested such vetting was taking place, but that, too, seems to undercut the Justice Departments legal position.

The travel ban was supposed to be a temporary measure, designed to afford the administration time to conduct a review and decide what new vetting procedures were necessary. When a federal judge in Hawaii ordered the ban frozen, though, the government interpreted his order as stopping even that review and the judge declined to clarify that it did not.

Wall told the 4th Circuit last month that the administration had put our pens down and had done nothing to review the vetting procedures for these countries.

If the administration already has implemented new vetting procedures, that would seem to call into question the necessity of a temporary ban. Legal analysts, though, have previously said that presidents remarks indicate he might not view the measure as temporary despite what the text of the executive order says.

Lake Hillier, Australia Bubblegum-pink Lake Hillier is a nearly 2,000-foot-wide lake on Middle Island, the largest of the Recherche island chain in the state of Western Australia. The remote lake is accessible via plane or boat excursion from nearby Esperance. The cause of the Lake Hillier's color isn't fully known. A high level of salinity and dye-producing bacteria are possible sources of the distinctive hue.

Cao Cristales River, Colombia Called "The Liquid Rainbow" and "The River of Five Colors," Colombia's Cao Cristales River puts on a splashy show each year between July and November. An eruption of colorful algae brings a predominantly blood red color to the river when the water levels are right. Guides offer tours of the area, which is part of the national park Sierra de La Macarena in the department of Meta.

World's most colorful landscapes

Danxia Landform, Zhangye, China Beautifully striped rock formations define the Danxia Landform near Zhangye in China's Gansu province. The rich, earthy, colors are the result of sandstone and minerals deposited millions of years ago.

Terraced rice fields, Yuanyang County, China The mirrorlike pools of Yuanyang County's flooded rice terraces in China's Yunnan province allow for an array of intense visual effects. Ancestors of the Hani people crafted the terraces by hand more than 1,000 years ago to irrigate the red rice crop. The terraces change with the seasons; in the winter and spring, flooded paddies create reflective pools, which give way to rippling ribbons of bold green in the summer growing season.

Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming The largest hot spring in Yellowstone, Grand Prismatic Spring is about 300 feet (90 meters) across and 165 feet (50 meters) deep. At 188 degrees Fahrenheit, the bright blue water at the center of the pool is too hot to support life, but bacteria and algae thrive along the edges. The heat-loving bacteria produce orange, yellow and red pigments as a natural sunscreen, creating the spring's psychedelic look.

The island's summers are usually sunny and clear, attracting tourists looking to camp and hike in the wide-open spaces. Lavender and tulips are among the flowers cultivated on the hills from spring to fall.

World's most colorful landscapes

Lake Natron, Tanzania This caustic lake along the Great Rift Valley in Tanzania is extremely salty, hot and inhospitable to most plants and animals. However, flamingos and other wetland birds thrive here alongside a species of alkaline tilapia and the salt-loving microorganisms that give the water an otherworldly red hue.

Antelope Canyon, Page, Arizona Some landscapes spring to life with light. The oranges, pinks and purples of Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona, are amplified and muted by the changing sunlight filtering down from above, with the most intense colors emerging during the summer months. Tulip fields, Lisse, Netherlands Visitors flock to the Netherlands each spring to wade in knee-deep fields of tulips. From mid-March to the end of May, saturated fields of flowers dot the landscape. Mid-April is considered the peak of the flowering season.

World's most colorful landscapes

White Mountains, New Hampshire Deciduous trees in the Northeastern United States create a tapestry of rich colors in the fall. While familiar to U.S. travelers, the colorful leaves never fail to draw hordes of autumn "leaf peepers."

World's most colorful landscapes

Fly Geyser, Nevada This colorful curiosity on private property in the Black Rock Desert in Washoe County, Nevada, is largely unknown because it's not open to the public. But the owners do offer occasional tours, and it's visible from the road. Evidently a man-made accident, this odd formation grew and evolved after a hole drilled in the earth began to spew geothermally heated water. The resulting buildup is this fantastic fountain.

World leaders call for unity after London attack. Trump tweets the complete opposite. – Washington Post

Three men in a speeding van mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge before getting out and stabbing patrons at nearby bars and restaurants on June 3. (The Washington Post)

In the early confusion ofSaturday's attack in London, as police urged people not to spread rumors, those world leaders who did speak out early were largely circumspect. Restrained. Sympathetic.

My thoughts go out to the victims and their loved ones, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Twitter. Awful news, wrote Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the same evening, adding, We're monitoring the situation.

Andthen there was President Trump.

BeforeLondon police or anyone else had announcedthat the attack was linked to terrorism the president of the United Statesretweeted an unsourced blurbfrom Drudge.com: Fears of new terror attack after van 'mows down 20 people' on London Bridge.

London authoritiesat that point had confirmed only a few details. Shortly after the Drudge tweet, British police againwarned against spreading unconfirmed information.

Fifteen minutes later, Trump issued his second tweet sincethe attack promoting his administration's legally embattled travel ban, which hinderspeople from several Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

As Philip Bump noted for The Washington Post, Trump tends to rush to weigh in on attacks connected to Islamist terrorism but is remarkably late in responding to others that are not.

Republicans and Democrats on June 4 commented on President Trump's tweets calling for a travel ban and criticizing the mayor of London after an attack in Britain's capital left seven people dead the day before. (Bastien Inzaurralde/The Washington Post)

[London attack toll rises to 7 dead as Theresa May insists things need to change]

But at that point in the evening (and even by Sunday morning), London authorities had not released any information on the identities, ethnicities or nationalities of the suspects in the attack.

Trump's final tweet of Saturdaynight was more in line with early statements from other world leaders a show of unity and support.

One minute after he sent it, British authorities declared the attackto be a terrorist incident.

Overnight, as Americans slept, leaders in Britain and around the world issued statements of condemnation.

On London Mayor Sadiq Khan's Twitter account, which had deferred to police in the early minutes of the attack, the mayorurged all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant today and in the days ahead and vowed that terrorists would not cow his city.

Onthe BBC, Khan also toldLondoners to expect a heavy police presence in the days ahead. No need to be alarmed, he said. One of the things the police, all of us, need to do is make sure we're as safe as we possibly can be.

In Trump'sfirst two tweets of the morning, he attacked political correctness then quoted a fragment of Khan's statement toessentially upbraid the elected leader of a woundedcity.

A spokesman for Khan later responded that the mayor has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump's ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks.

The president let 15 more minutes go by before he tweetedagain. By now, many world leaders had spoken out on the attack. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had joined Britain in horror and mourning, and vowed toaid in the fight against terrorism. British Prime Minister Theresa May hadlaid outdetails of the attackthat had beenconfirmed, along withher planto prevent more like it.

At 7:43 a.m., Trump citedthe attack to ridicule gun control.

Even as authorities hunted for suspects in Britain onSunday morning, a spat raged on Internet over whether Trump's tweets had beenreckless and offensive or prescient andbold.

The president's critics made much of the NBC Nightly News's refusal to cite Trump's early retweet suggestingthe attack was terrorism.

"Translation," CNN hostReza Aslan wrote about NBC's disclaimer: "The president is a man baby that must be ignored in times of crisis."

Noting thatTrump hadreceived an intelligence briefing minutesafter the attack, the Guardian wonderedif whatever he learned influenced his decision to retweet Drudge's speculation. The publication also noted that it was unclear whether the briefing had occurred before Trump's retweet.

Trump-friendly websites, meanwhile, focused on the fact that later that evening, Drudge turned out to be right.

"CNN Host Reza Aslan Calls Trump Piece of S--- for Correctly Identifying London Terror Attack," Breitbart wrote, for example.

But nearly allof Trump's London tweets drewoutrage from someone.

"Political point scoring is the absolute, LAST thing we need right now," a British barrister wrote Saturday, for example after Trump promoted hisexecutive orders banning visitorsfrom Muslim-majority countries. Even the European Union's top security official called out the president.

And the president's criticism of Khan, London's mayor, instigateda sort of flame war betweenBritish and American leaders with Khan's spokesman and Trump's social-media director sparring as proxies for their bosses.

City Highlight: Montevideo – World Travel Guide

Montevideo is more reserved than many of its South American neighbours, and in some ways it seems as if its stuck in a time warp, but its still a lively and inviting metropolis, a charming sprawl of contrasting architecture, districts and colours. And as it gets relatively few international visitors, you can explore at your own pace.

Montevideos compact centre is best explored on foot. A good place to start is 18 de Julio Avenue, the main street that runs through the city. Join the avenue at the west of the city, at the Plaza Independencia, called the Gateway of the Citadel. Here you can see at the towering, gothic Palacio Salvo or pay your respects to Uruguays founding father Jos Artigas at the Artigas Mausoleum.

An hours walk away, at the other end of 18 de Julio Avenue, the Obelisk of Montevideo stands at the entrance to Parque Batlle a magnificent public park that houses several important national monuments and the world renowned Estadio Centenario. This iconic stadium was built just in time for the first ever World Cup final in 1930, which La Celeste (the sky blues) hosted and won. Football is still played here but if you dont get lucky enough to catch a game, the stadium also houses the Museo de Futbol, which is open five days a week and boasts a fascinating collection of footballing memorabilia. For non-football fanatics, see our Montevideo city guide for more things to see and do in Montevideo.

Uruguay, like neighbouring Brazil and Argentina, is a nation of meat-eaters. Traditional dishes include the juicychivito, a filet mignon steak sandwich typically piled high with mayonnaise, egg, cheese and other fillings. Wood-fired barbecues, orparrillada, are ubiquitous: the best are at the Mercado del Puerto on the waterfront. This is also where youll find Caf Rolds, which was established in 1886 and serves the citys signature medio y medio (half dry white wine, half sparkling wine) with wonderful views of the bustling port. Hungry for more from Montevideo? See our restaurant recommendations for the city.

As in most of South America, nightlife in Montevideo starts late. There isnt the same wealth of clubs as Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro, but theres a great local bar and caf scene. One of the oldest running institutions is the Baar Fun Fun Club which has been a tango and candomb music hotspot for more than a century. Its Uvita, a super-sweet wine-based concoction, based on a secret recipe, has been made and bottled by the bar for the last 120 years. See the nightlife in Montevideo guide for more local suggestions.

For such a small city, Montevideo has great shopping opportunities. Once a prison, Punta Carretas Shopping is now Montevideos largest shopping centre and also home to a multiplex cinema and a number of chain restaurants. For a more traditionally Uruguayan shopping experience, visit the numerous ferias (markets) in the capital peddling crafts, clothes and antiques. A good place to start is Mercado de los Artesanos, a crafts market on Plaza Cagancha where artists take shifts selling each others candles, leatherwork and ceramic lamps. For souvenirs that reflect Uruguays rural heritage, try the high quality woollen textiles and woodcrafts. More unique shopping experiences and local deals can be found in our Montevideo shopping guide.

Liquor sale: SC order on liquor sale: World Travel and Tourism … – Economic Times

NEW DELHI: The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), a global forum for the industry, called for a coordinated countrywide response to the Supreme Court ban on the sale of alcohol in proximity to highways, reflecting concern that move will take a toll on the revenue of several companies with interests in India. Some members of the industry, meanwhile, threatened a strike if the matter wasn't resolved soon.

WTTC said the ban will have a significantly negative effect on hotels and restaurants in India and will curtail investment for job creation in the industry.

In December, the SC had directed states and Union territories to cease granting liquor licences to outlets along national and state highways. No shops should be visible or directly accessible within 500 metres from the highways, the top court had said.

In its March 31 order, the Supreme Court rejected review petitions seeking clarification on the earlier judgement, forcing a vast number of hotels, restaurants and pubs to stop serving alcohol to guests, leading to losses in sales and tax revenue.

"While we acknowledge the importance of implementing policies that address the abuse of alcohol when driving, we call on the Indian government to reverse or amend the current ruling," said David Scowsill, chief executive officer, WTTC. "I do not believe that this ban was aimed at the travel industry. It is an unbalanced approach that will have negative consequences for the countrys economy, as business and leisure customers cancel their bookings in those affected establishments."

Various options are being considered to mitigate the effect of the ban, including legal challenges, redesignation of highways as district roads and increasing the motorable distance to outlets.

Riyaaz Amlani, president, National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) said he hopes the denotification process in various states of highways being renamed goes through. "If that fails, then we will have no option but to go to the president," he said.

Key industry groupings such as Federation of Hotels and Restaurant Association of India (FHRAI) and NRAI are planning to meet on April 11 in New Delhi with other tourism and travel bodies to discuss the matter.

Industry associations said they may be forced to declare a strike if talks with the state governments fail.

"Let the tourists be out on the roads. We are contemplating calling a nationwide bandh if our efforts to deal with the state governments fail," said Dilip Datwani, president of Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI).

The order, based on a public interest litigation filed by an NGO called Arrive Safe, is aimed at checking drunk-driving on highways but industry experts say it will do little to discourage the practice.

Western industry associations met Maharashtra tourism minister Jaykumar Jitendrasinh Rawal on Thursday.

The state government assured them that move would not hurt the industry.

Amlani said around 30,000 restaurants and bars in India will lose their licences as a result of the ban. Other incidental losses could affect 1million jobs in the industry, according to previous estimates.

This couple uses Instagram to make a fortune traveling the world … – New York Post

This couple has turned their wanderlust into a career with the help of Instagram.

Jack Morris, 26, and Lauren Bullen, 24, travel the world while promoting brands and locations on Instagram, making six-figure salaries, according to Cosmopolitan.

They have a combined following of more than 3 million on Instagram, where they share breathtaking snaps relaxing in hammocks in the Maldives and eating pizza outside the Coliseum in Italy.

The couple, who have been dating for two years, earn up to $9,000 for a single post. According to Morris, he would not promote anything on his account for less than $3,000.

Morris, who is originally from Manchester, United Kingdom, started jet-setting around the world after buying a one-way ticket to Bangkok when he was 21 years old. Meanwhile, Bullen first started gaining followers taking photos around her home country, Australia.

They had each already been blogging their travels, gradually building up their brand portfolios, before they met while in Fiji for a job.

We got on so well from day one and were inseparable throughout the whole trip. On our last night in Fiji I asked her to come to Bali with me, she said yes and weve been together ever since! Morris wrote on his blog Do You Travel.

When not working, the couple lives together in Bali, Indonesia.

Four Snacks in Search of an Airline at the World Travel Catering and Onboard Services Expo – APEX Media

For many new snack vendors, landing a deal with an airline would be a dream come true, but its no easy feat. For independent companies, the airline tender process can be too resource-intensive, competitive or just downright intimidating. Youve got to have elephant-thick skin in this business, said Emirates alum and current head of Dnatas catering division, Robin Padgett, at this years World Travel Catering and Onboard Services Expo (WTCE). But if youve got the right product, branding strategy and youre confident in it, dont stop. Keep pushing.

Here are four snacks in search of their first airline customer at WTCE.

Chikas Gluten Free, Vegan West African Snacks

Chika Russell, founder and mogul behind Chikas Snacks, may be familiar to viewers of Dragons Den UK, where she received offers from all of the dragons, eventually accepting one, but later walking away from the agreement to go at it alone. After achieving success in online and retail markets, shes now hoping to bring her Nigerian-inspired snacks on board. Entering the airline space is just an evolution of where our business needs to be as a global player, she says. In her view, landing a deal with an airline likely wont be a huge revenue generating opportunity, but the ability for marketing your brand in airlines, and getting more people seeing drives more brand awareness, makes the airline market an attractive industry. Her snack line ranges from hand-cooked plantain to chickpea crisps and varieties of nuts all infused with a bold kick of flavor.

Biscotteria Bettinas Confezioni Salati

Sourced by trolley innovators and food suppliers Italcarrelli, Biscotteria Bettinas new line of biscuits offers a savory twist: Theyre salty cookies. For salty snacks, were used to seeing chips, but not biscuits, says Sandra Capuzzo, international business relations advisor for Italcarreilli. Perfect as an antipasti or an aperitivo, the biscuits blend traditional Italian ingredients into original combinations like cantucci with peanuts and parmesan, or curry and poppy seed. Those not sure if they should pair their biscuit with an Aperol Spritz or Prosecco can consult the pairings list prepared by Italian sommelier Wladimiro Gobbo. Its something really new for the market, and airlines always want some innovation, something new to offer their customers, says Capuzzo. For those with a sweet tooth, Biscotteria Bettina also offers a line of sweet biscuits.

Bars Chocolate Mallow Hippos

Airlines looking for a hippo in a haystack snack with the potential to surprise and delight passengers may be in luck with Bars Chocolate Mallow Hippos. Available in bars or bite-size servings, the handcrafted marshmallow treats are colorful and come in fun fruity flavors or rich chocolate tastes. Bar has grown its retail footprint, which now spans the globe, with stores stocking the sweets in Australia, Asia, Europe and North America, but the company now has its sights on the skies. We see that in the airline industry and other retail environments people are looking for new experiences and better products than everyday items, says Maarten Krikken, owner of Bar. Endeavoring to take off in the airline business does come with a learning curve, Krikken says. Its a completely different market from what we are used to. There are a lot of people involved and very specific requirements.

The Coconut Collaboratives Dessert Pots

The Coconut Collaborative is on a mission to give back to the plant and spread its coco love far, wide and high. Non-dairy, vegan and low on calorie count, the collaboratives Little Chocolate and Little Lemon dessert pots are refreshing, guilt-free treats, idealfor the health and environmentally conscious traveler. Our product has been a huge success in retail, and travel represents a good opportunity for good volumes and great marketing, says account manager James Hanbury. Having first launched in the UK, the product can now be found in France and Germany and was recently made available in a smaller to-go format with airlines in mind. Hanbury thinks the products wide consumer appeal could have airlines going coccoonutty for the little pots. Our biggest selling point and point of difference is that it caters for all, he says. I think our product represents a huge opportunity to serve everyone on the plane the same thing.

World Travel Market brings together key players in So Paulo … – eTurboNews

More than 100 senior industry leaders, authorities, private sector executives and tourism professionals, accompanied the conversation between the leadership of the three countries which, according to the United Nations (UN), are looking at tourism as a component of sustainable development.

This was the second day of the 5th edition of WTM Latin America & 47th Braztoa Business Event as it got underway with an important political meeting between leaders of the Latin American travel industry. The Ministerial Round Table on Tourism as a Tool for Development consisted of Marx Beltro, the Brazilian Minister for Tourism, Lilian Kechichin, Uruguay's Minister of Tourism, and Alejandro Lastra, Argentina's Secretary of Tourism, in the realization of a meeting that was conceived during WTM London in November of last year.

"WTM portfolio is globally recognized for guaranteeing encounters that promote networking, business creation, and reflection regarding the industry's challenges and opportunities. Holding this meeting as one of the milestones of the fifth edition of WTM Latin America is a source of great pride for us. We know that we are contributing, in an effective way, to the industry's development", says Lawrence Reinisch, Exhibitions Director of WTM Latin America.

The secretary of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Sandra Carvao, who mediated the debate, reinforced the importance of 2017, which was elected the Year of Sustainable Tourism, and highlighted the three goals that have been ever-present this year: raising awareness regarding this industry's power as a tool for sustainable development, the mobilization of the public and private sector, and mobilization with public policies changing consumer behavior.

During the meeting, the Brazilian Minister for Tourism, Marx Beltro, praised the initiatives that are being developed, in particular policies for simplifying visas, strengthening air infrastructure, with greater connectivity, and promotion of destinations, in addition to the size of Brazil's territory and the potential from the partnership with the private sector. "We are working hard on the concessions and infrastructure agenda, increasing access to the more than 60 million people who travel throughout Brazil. But the government can't resolve everything".

Marx Beltro also stressed that the country needs to use the sector as a driver of economic development "generating employment and income in local communities where tourism enterprises have already been developed". The Brazilian minister added that the industry continues to grow, even in the face of the economic challenges. "the travel industry is the only one that's swimming against the tide of unemployment."

BUSINESS GENERATION

Another highlight of the second day of WTM Latin America was the start of the highly sought after the Speed Networking sessions, in the Networking Area. This business activity was set up so that buyers have the opportunity to make the greatest possible number of contacts with exhibitors in a short space of time. The sessions contribute to the diversity of contacts and receptiveness among the investors, making the relationship between them more dynamic. "It is very important to stress that these are not conventional meetings: Speed Networking paves the way for deals that will be done later," says the Exhibitions Director of WTM Latin America, Lawrence Reinisch.

Today, approximately 400 exhibitors and 100 buyers took part of the event, including Ricardo Shimosakai, who is commercial director of the company Turismo Adaptado. "I regard it as having been a very good experience. These relationship encounters are very positive, mainly because I manage to make numerous contacts."

BRAZTOA 2017 YEARBOOK: 3% GROWTH IN THE TURNOVER

In 2016, the turnover of the companies associated with Braztoa (the Brazilian Tour Operators Association) came to a total of R$ 11.3 billion, which represents a 3% increase vis--vis the previous year. Domestic tourism was the choice of 81.4% of Brazilians during the period, as compared with 78.5% in 2015, reflecting the crisis period and the change in consumption patterns, marked by substitution of destinations, products and services. These figures are part of the Braztoa 2017 Yearbook, which is presented today by the organization's president, Magda Nassar.

In relation to the type of package sold, complete packages - those that include both the land part and the air part - remain the preferred option for most people, accounting for 60% of the choices. The number of embarkations showed a slight increase of 1%, and of the 5.12 million passengers who embarked, 4.1 million went to destinations inside Brazil. The Brazilian region that stands out the most is that of the Northeast, which accounts for 67.4% of the sales of domestic trips, followed by the Southeast with 13.7%, the South with 12.6% and the North and Centre-West regions, which together account for 6.1% of the industry's turnover.

"Our industry registered a small increase in a year full of challenges," recalled Magda. "But we recently had the announcement of a freeze of nearly 68% in the Ministry of Tourism's expenses (a R$ 321.6 million cut). Let's complain", invited the president.

The complete yearbook will be available on Braztoa's website ( http://www.braztoa.com.br ) from April 7 onwards.

PROFESSIONAL UPDATING

Continuing with the training and professional development agenda, WTM Latin America welcomed the researcher and professor from the University of So Paulo, Mariana Aldrigui, who spoke about how new generations are playing a leading role in terms of developing inspiring projects to help preserve the environment.

During the panel "Translating sustainability into business: inspiring ideas!", the specialist went as far as to challenge Brazilian students. "If countries such as the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom can create gardens inside supermarkets, vests with pollution sensors that measure how often to reduce pollution, Brazil needs to get into gear and encourage people with new ideas".

Another panel that had a full crowd was the one presented by Google's tourism industry analyst, Felipe Chammas. The advertising executive presented a number of examples of productions that got thousands of hits on YouTube, applauding the fact that the consumption of travel content on the platform has increased by 200% over the last few years. "You have to think in terms of how to creatively inspire and influence these travelers. Because they are doing research and are identifying with the tips given and the experiences presented in the videos".

How Instagram Stars Jack Morris and Lauren Bullen Make Money … – Travel+Leisure

Ah, the honeymoon phase of a new relationship: spontaneous dates, late-night conversations... exploring Balinese waterfalls, piggy-back rides through the jungle, and breakfasts with giraffes on safari.

Okay, so some of those perks only come with a budding romance if you're Jack Morris, 26, and Lauren Bullen, 24, two travel bloggers who met in Fiji just over a year ago and have already traveled to more than 20 countries together. On top of that, they're earning six-figure salaries doing it.

Go ahead, send your significant other that passive-aggressive text message. We'll wait.

Courtesy of Lauren Bullen @gypsea_lust | Jack Morris @doyoutravel

Morris, the face of the travel blog Do You Travel, recently hosted a Q&A where he gave his 2 million Instagram followers travel and money tips and answered their burning questions about his beautiful Australian girlfriend and how they turned everyone's dream life into a reality.

In the post, he reveals he didn't go to college, cleaned carpets for a living, lived out of a backpack for four years, and got a house with Bullen in Bali last October after meeting her in March. (So basically, yes, your mother's advice on everything might be wrong.)

We met in March 2016 whilst on a job together in Fiji. We got on so well from day one and were inseperable throughout the whole trip, Morris writes of Bullen, who goes by @gypsea_lust to her 1.2 million Instagram followers and also has a blog of her own. On our last night in Fiji I asked her to come to Bali with me, she said yes and we've been together ever since!

The pair has since traveled to more than 20 countries, and recently celebrated their one year anniversary with some PDA under a turquoise waterfall. (How else?) Right now, Morris and Bullen make up to $9,000 and $7,500 per sponsored Instagram post, respectively, according to Daily Mail Australia.

Want to become an Instagram star in your own right? Morris gives some tips: He uses Lightroom to edit his photos, not Instagram filters. I also look at the grid and try to plan the next image to make sure it works well with the rest of my recent feed, he wrote.

To avoid crowds, he said he shoots at popular spots around one hour after sunrise. He also said he takes all photos of Lauren, and she takes all photos of him. When they're pictured together, they usually use a tripod and timer.

Courtesy of Lauren Bullen @gypsea_lust | Jack Morris @doyoutravel

Morris' feed is filled with jaw-dropping destinations, which he says he finds via word of mouth, Instagram, and research on Pinterest. The couple aims to travel to at least one new country every month (for pleasure; that's not counting work), which they select last-minute.

To learn more about his favorite (and least favorite) places, pros and cons of being an influencer, and the Instagram photo he loves most, check out Morris' post on Do You Travel.
