The writers said in the article that food and drink were heavy factors in this years ranking.

So what put Cincinnati on the map? The writers first note the transformation of Over-the-Rhine. As far as food and drink, they gave shout-outs to Holtmans Donuts, Boca and Sotto.

Other factors mentioned were the streetcar and Music Hall.

A big portion of the areas description was given to Covington and its new, boutique hotel. They described Hotel Covington in great length as a beautifully repurposed space.

Go to school. Get good grades. Get a good job. Buy a house. Work for 30+ years. Be a good consumer. Retire on a golf course.

For many, these are the ingredients for success. But life has more to offer those willing to change the recipe.

Politics, world travel and a universalist faith – Patheos (blog)

My ten-year-old grandson is already a universalist. I suspect hell never understand the way the Evangelical Christians insist that those who dont accept Jesus into their hearts will see God condemn them to hell.

On a walk with the beautiful mother of my d-i-l and my sweet husband with the challenging Bepo.

[Note: Jet lag still horrible and not sleeping. But wanted to get some observations out in the first leg of our trip.]

By late Saturday night, only six of us remained in this suburban London house: me, my husband, a son, his wife, and their two children.

Most of the day, there have been fifteen here: various relatives from Colombia, some Brits, including my grandsons two female cousins, a Frenchman, and us US folks.

The morning had started, after the usual superb omelet that emerges from the kitchen magic here, with several rousing games of ping-pong with the youngest grandson. To put it mildly, I was soundly defeated. However, my husband gave him a pretty good run for the money.

Nonetheless, nothing can beat a determined nine-year-old school table-tennis champ with a killer-spin-serve that is nearly impossible to return.

In the meantime, his older brother and dad mowed and trimmed the huge back yard. Late morning, as others began to arrive, several of us set out for a walk in the nearby fields.

As is true all across the UK, there are dedicated public footpaths across privately held fields. We were able to meander comfortably through nearby fields of a thousand acres of sorghum and some other flowering grain.

Bepo, the one-year-old Chesapeake Retriever who comes from superb hunting stock, went through numerous training exercises but also was able to run freely, as did the many other dogs we met on our way.

After returning, the Colombian women headed to the kitchen, preparing for all fifteen of us a lovely lunch of beans, rice, pork, fried plantains, and salad. Lively South American music flooded the kitchen. The women danced as they cooked.

I prevailed on my oldest grandson to show off his increasingly expert piano skills. I knew enough to stay out of the kitchen.

Lunch conversation revolved around politics at our end of the table (all speaking English there) and politics at the other end of the table (all in Spanish there).

Was fascinated to hear the current take on the situation in Great Britain. Theresa May, misreading her popularity levels, decided to call for this election thinking she would solidify her position by so doing.

In the UK, voters vote, not for the Prime Minister, but for their local MPs. The party that gets most of the votes then chooses the Prime Minister. In this case, the Tories (Conservatives, Mays party) ended up losing multiple spots, rendering the likely end to Mays leadership.

There are numerous calls for her to resign. If she doesnt, she will probably be removed anyway by the Parliament, as the Labour Party (i.e., more liberal) picked up a bundle of seats. The consensusaround the table: the UK has no functional government at the moment.

Apparently, Holland is in a similar situation with a completely split government. France, however, is very, very happy with their election. Marie Le Pen made the same mistake as May: misunderstanding her popularity levels and thinking it would carry the election.

As for Trump: most Brits cant stand him, nor can the French. My son, although fairly sure Trump would win, is now making a series of bets as to how soon the House will start impeachment procedures.

While the political conversations were taking place, the kids disappeared on a bike ride with just a well be back later notice to their parents. None of the rest of us even knew they were gone.

On a later 2 1/2 mile walk to a pub, accompanied again by Bepo in an attempt to wear him out a bit, my walking companion was the oldest of the four cousins, a 16-year-old. She and I have grown close over the years of my visits, and we delight in being in each others company. She also graciously provided a steadying arm on some rock-laden, steep downhill forest paths where it is easy to lose footing or trip over a tree root.

A straggling line of our house party taking the 2 and 1/2 mile walk to the ancient pub.

She told me all about the bike ride, pointing out the hills they had raced down, the games they played, the freedom they enjoyed. And no, they had not worn helmets and, no, their parents did not come with them, and no, their parents did not know where they were going, as there are miles of roads and trails around here.

When I spoke of the fewer freedoms US kids have regarding this kind of unsupervised time and imaginative play (all the children have extreme restrictions on screen time), she said, So what happens when they go off to University? Will they have the maturity necessary to handle their freedom when theyve never had practice being on their own?

Wise question from a 16-year-old indeed. And I wonder the same. Other conversations with the kids indicated a remarkably high level of awareness of the world and current political events. They know well we live in an interconnected society. Far better than most US children, I would guess.

The pub, full of small rooms and expansive outdoor seating, also is a haven for dog owners. Nearly everyone had one, mostly quite large, all well-behaved. Bepo, so much the adolescent who had also taken an exuberant roll in a mud puddle, needed careful control on a tight leash, but many sat unleashed and calmly obedient to their owners.

I enjoyed a cold gin and tonic, and most others had a beer while my teen friend enjoyed hot chocolate. We all admired the other dogs around us and then headed back, with the steep uphill climbs facing us.

By 8:30, after the children had a quick swim, people began to depart leaving again the quiet household of only six.

Another superb meal followed, and we eventually tumbled into bed.

Shortly, my son heads for the Middle East as part of his work. He has some fascinating insights into the situation in Qatar, where he has often, until now, flown as that airport is a great hub for most Middle East airports.

Qatar, fully desert and embarrassingly oil-rich, must import 100% of its food and the only way food can get in right now is by air. The Saudis have blocked all roads. Qatars seaport is too small for the giant freighters that deliver to nearby ports. The Saudis are trying to starve them out.

Before breakfast, my son and husband headed to the store and came back with a copy of The Sunday Times. From a front-page article that spoke of Theresa May, She had a 20-point lead but managed to turn that crock of gold into a crock of shit. By the endin a campaign against Jeremy Corbyn for Gods sakewe were even on the back foot over terrorism. This is the extent of the disaster.

The press pulls no punches over here.

I asked my oldest grandson about the Religious Education courses he takes as part of his prep school education. They are studying all religious faiths. His best friend is a Muslima delightful and personable kid who was here on Friday when we arrived. Their classmates include Buddhists and Hindus as well as Muslims and Christians. My grandson didnt know if there were any Jewish classmates.

As part of a philosophy class (hes 10!), the instructor asked the children to define the meaning of life. I inquired how he answered. He replied, I guess it depends on how one is raised. Those who are Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Christian will all have different ideas of the meaning of life.

But now, the boys have a tutor here. They must prepare extensively for comprehensive exams that will decide on the schools they will start attending in the ninth grade. The environment is highly competitive and the seats in the best schools in short supply. Lots of academic pressure.

A few thoughts: The US is a bit of a laughing stock right now. However, political issues and economic problems are intense here. The British universal and free health care, so touted by many in the US who want a single payer system, is rapidly draining the country of resources and in danger of collapse. Not nearly enough adequate housing. The tough job situation is not improving.

Economics matter and they matter a lot.

People, both in Great Britain and in France, are also choosing not to give into fear, despite the recent terrorist acts. Although the immigration officer at the airport carefully asked about plans while here, I saw no one detained.

Im also thinking about my grandsons religious understandings. He is, already, a universalist. I suspect hell never understand the way the US Evangelical Christians insist that those who dont accept Jesus into their hearts will discover God intends to send them to hell. Assuming the Evangelicals are right, of course.

His world, informed as it is by international friends, major travel experiences, and coupled with a wider education, makes such narrowness impossible. So, does that mean that he, along with his brother and their cousins and extended family, will all experience eternal conscious torment? They are not regular attendees at Mass, although the boys are getting the basic grounding in their faith. Is that enough to keep them from the fiery abyss?

Its a question to explore. But now, it is time for a walk to another pub for lunch.

All thoughts welcome.

Bright Blue Gorilla Travel the World Making Musically-Minded Art House Films – OC Weekly

EXPAND

Image from Mr. Rudolpho's Jubilee

Robyn Rosenkrantz and Michael Glover are the consummate traveling art machine. For nearly 30 years, they have been traveling the world as Bright Blue Gorilla, performing concerts, showcasing their independent films, selling their CDs and DVDs, and maintaining their operation with the aid of the people theyve met along the way. As Bright Blue Gorilla, they have produced a dozen CDs, six feature films, and theyve just returned to L.A. to continue a tour they started in Europe three months ago.

Tomorrow, Bright Blue Gorilla will be appearing at The Frida Cinema, where they will perform a concert, screen their latest film, Mr. Rudolphos Jubilee, and conduct a Q&A session following the films screening. In advance of their appearance, the Weekly had a chance to catch up with Rosenkrantz and Glover to talk about their filmmaking model, shooting in Europe on a shoestring budget, and what audiences can expect to experience at one of their shows.

OC Weekly (Scott Feinblatt): To what extent have you guys shifted your focus from music production to film production, or is it all just sort of wound up together as your creative output?

Michael Glover: It definitely goes together. We still do a lot of music because of the movies. Every movie we have quite a lot of songs in it; for example, in this new film Mr. Rudolpho's Jubilee, we're the Greek chorus in the film. I wrote us in as that, and we're sort of telling the story to the audience through song, throughout the movie...and then there's always the incidental music and all kinds of things, so there's quite a lot of music still.

Robyn Rosenkrantz: With this movie, we have a soundtrack as well, that we sell at the shows because there was so much music in the movie.

Mr. Rudolpho's Jubilee was made with the participation of 300 artists from 36 countries. How did you corral that many artists from so many different places to collaborate with you?

Glover: Well, we've been touring for 27 years, starting as musicians, then in the past 10 or 12 years with movies, we have met so many great people over the years that it's not hard to get a great collection of artists.

Rosenkrantz: Yeah, it's so easy to meet new people when you travel, and especially when you're doing shows...and there are so many talented artists in so many different countries, and every couple years we try to bring 'em all together [to do] a film together.

Michael Glover and Robyn Rosenkrantz of Bright Blue Gorilla.

To what extent is it a fully funded project that you get investors for versus grabbing your resources and your friends and making a movie?

Glover: We've noticed for us, since we're a touring act, that we've reached a level with it sort of like sharecropping. We make enough money on every movie to make another movie. That's kind of how it works.

Rosenkrantz: It's a lifestyle. [laughs]

Glover: You make your crop, you sell it, and you make enough to proceed for the next crop. It's kind of at that level, so it's not excessively profitable, but we make enough to pay for the movie we just made and to make another one. So it's self-perpetuating, which was really the most important thing to me, as the director (I write 'em and direct 'em). I had an idea when we first started that it has to be repeatable; it has to be a repeatable formula because I've met so many directors that have just done one picture and just been so burned out by it and so destroyed by that process that they never make another one.

Rosenkrantz: [Also, regarding funding] we really work as an artist collective, where everybody will get a percent of the profits of the film. It was kind of a neat way to work because everybody was there because they wanted to be, and they believed in the story. That really creates an inspiring and fun atmosphere on set; I mean, everybody works really hard, but we have a lot of laughs on set[all] the money really goes to feeding people and the equipment, so that's kind of how we do it. Everybody's really coming together because they believe in art.

Glover: Even our movie star we had a German movie star, Christiane Paul she also just joined the collective and was a part of it in that way. I was reading a book right before I wrote this script, about D.W. Griffith; it's a nice book by Lillian [Gish], and she talks about how everybody on the set, in the early days these are the first commercial films made and everybody on the set got $5 a day. Everybody. The actors, the actresses, the camera guy. It was like this egalitarian thing, and he didn't differentiate between the main actress and, like, waiter guy walking behind her. I thought that was kind of interesting; she said there was really a great attitude on the set. Everybody felt like they were equals and they really just wanted to make a special thing. So I try to create some modern version of that. That's why we did the collective.

Sounds like a fun production model; where does it go from there?

Glover: We take the movie on tour to cinemas. We play 40, 50, 60, 100 cinemas over the course of a year, and also, in between the cinemas, we do like pop-up screenings at people's houses. We really try to just generate as much income back from the movie ourselves, as we can. That's what we did before we got a distributor, and now weve had a distributor for the past two films. That's helped a lot because now we have a team of people that are also trying to make money with the movie; they're out there looking for deals and TV things, and airline stuff and all this sort of thing.

Yeah, I was going to ask about distribution. I saw that your previous film, Go with Le Flo is on Netflix. Through what other channels can your work be seen?

Rosenkrantz: The distributor we're working with, Under the Milky Way, they're real experts in iTunes and Amazon, you know the whole VoD [Video on Demand], that's really their specialty. So, it's pretty neat, you can actually see our films worldwide now, which is kind of neat for low-budget, indie filmmaking that it's actually getting seen. Most filmmakers, you know, the only way to get your film seen is through film festivals, but since we're also a band, as Michael was saying: "You know what, let's take our movies on tour just like we did with our CDs, and we'll play shows; and we'll sell our CDs and DVDs at the shows. One of our fans in Holland is the manager of a very cool art house cinema. He kind of came up with the idea: "Hey you guys, why don't you show your movie at our cinema and come play a concert?" And that was from our very first movie, six movies ago. So it was pretty neat that he opened the doors to us, and we've been doing it that way ever since.

You shot this film in Germany and Italy. How difficult is it to go from country to country and make a film?

Rosenkrantz: This film was especially a challenge. I always say to Michael, "Write the script like you have money, and you just write the story you want. We're gonna figure out some version of how to shoot this picture. And so, he wrote it to take place at a villa the opening of the movie and I'm like, oh my gosh, now we've got to find a villa. But we ended up through a friend in Florence, actually a musician, an incredible guitar player, [meeting] a lady that owned a villa. So we went to visit her; she didn't speak any English just Italian and [our friend] translated. She loved the spirit of how we made the movies, so she said, "Sure you can shoot at the villa. In fact, you can shoot in my private garden." Michael and I were able to stay at the villa and have our base there, but I had to find a place to put up the 14 actors and crew, and it was amazing; our assistant director in Italy, she went online and she ended up finding this incredible villa that slept 14 people, I think 20 minutes away, or a half-hour drive away...

Glover: There's a lot of villas in Tuscany!

Rosenkrantz: There's a lot of villas! And it was only 200 Euro a night [about $225]. The guy gave us a great deal.

Glover: Fourteen people.

Rosenkrantz: Fourteen people! So they were able to stay at this other villa, which was amazing. Then two of our hair and make-up people, and our assistant camera, they drove the equipment truck. They said, "Yeah we'll take a road trip from Berlin to Italy. It sounds exciting!

Glover: They were nice, very young, excited people just out of film school and out of make-up school, and they were like: "We want a road trip!" So they thought! They jumped in the van in Berlin looking all perky and happy, and then we met them three days later on the other side, and they dragged themselves out of the van like people that had been through war. It was great!

To what extent is there film commission, paperwork, or is all of that off when we get to rural villas and things like that?

Glover: You still have to make a lot of arrangements like that. You have to be smart; you can't just run off and be an idiot, but there's a lot of places that are film friendly. Basically, as long as there are no public safety issues, you can shoot in a lot of places. But there are exceptions, and you always have to be aware of: "What is the situation, and what am I getting into, and what do I need?" We were able to get an artist visa for a year, for Robyn and I, in Berlin so that we could be there and shoot. That was very helpful. That's something that is available to people; it's a great thing that the Germans do. It's a lot easier for an American to get it in Berlin because they still think back to us fondly because we did that Berlin airlift all those years ago we really kind of saved the city at a certain point. So they've got a soft spot in their hearts for Americans, is what I've been told. And it was very easy for us to get that visa, so we did that, and then the rest of it: you decide what shot it is, what you're doing, we'd talk to local people, we'd talk to the film people and say "What do we need? What do we have to do?" And you do what you've gotta do.

How do American audiences respond to your work versus European audiences?

Glover: The Americans seem to like our stuff. Now I'm talking about a special audience; I'm talking about cinema lovers, the people that would go to an art house cinema. They seem to really get what we're doing because we're referencing other genres and other films, in a way, in the work; there's also an American sense of humor. Even though we spent most of the past 27 years living in Europe, when I write this stuff, it's still sort of got an American tempo and an American comedy aesthetic, so they seem to understand the form. Also, a lot of the film is in a foreign language. This one has a lot in English, but it's also in German and Italian, and that gives it a kind of fun art film feel to it (with those scenes that are subtitled and that are in their original language). So, we've had good response here, and the Europeans also...frankly, it's played well everywhere. It's not for everyone; it's not an Action film, it's not a Horror film. It's sort of a light-hearted genre mix of a bunch of different styles, but I think the redeeming qualities of the movie are that it's a fairly complex story, so it keeps your attention and also it's got a sweetness to it and a nice vibe. One comment we've gotten from every country is they're really happy to take a break from all the heavy darkness that they're experiencing in daily life, now, with all the strange news that we're getting all the time. [Theyre happy] just going to this make-believe world where people are kind to each other and where everything works out.

Are there any particulars youd like to share with OC Weekly readers regarding your show at The Frida Cinema?

Glover: Basically, at the show we're going to play a short concert before the film; we always do that because we love to connect with the audience that way, and there will be a question and answer after. We usually have a pretty lively question and answer session.

Rosenkrantz: Sometimes we even do singalongs! It's a lot of fun!

Glover: Tell [your readers] to warm up their voices before they show up.

Rosenkrantz: [laughing] Also, if they come to the show, they can actually enter a contest to win a part in our next film.

Glover: We've been doing that lately. The "You can be a star contest" we call it. We take four people randomly from the list, and put them in the film somewhere. It's just a fun way to involve people.

So you're shooting the next one in America?

Glover: Well, partly. It's basically sort of an espionage comedy; sort of a spy comedy, and it's going to be shot all around the world, including America. How I'm going to do that on the budget we have, I don't know, but we're figuring that out!

Sounds like you might have to resort to some guerrilla filmmaking!

Rosenkrantz: Totally guerrilla filmmaking!

Glover: Bright Blue guerrilla filmmaking!

Rosenkrantz: Also, if you can't make the Frida Cinema, we're going to do the Bowers Museum, August 19th. Otherwise we're doing pop-up cinema and house concerts, so we'd love people to connect with us through our website all of our shows are on our website!

Coppola family brings glitz and glamour to Auction Napa Valley – World Travel Guide

Padding around in a white suit, Francis Ford Coppola injected a dose of Hollywood glitz into this years Auction Napa Valley, which raised $15.7 million for local charities in the California wine region.

The Godfather director and owner of Inglenook, one of Napas most venerable and iconic wineries co-chaired the event with members of his family. Fresh from her best director win at the Cannes Film Festival for The Beguiled, Sofia Coppola hosted a small dinner for the highest bidders at last years auction.

Sofia and Roman Coppola / Napa Valley Vintners

Her mother, Eleanor Coppola, who has just released her first feature film, Paris Can Wait, starring Diane Lane and Alec Baldwin, catered for 2,000 guests at the barrel auction held at the Inglenook Estate on Saturday, where cases of wine from 108 producers were up for grabs and could be sampled fresh from the barrel, with the 10 highest bidders for each of the wines winning a case.

Speaking to World Travel Guide, Eleanor confirmed that Coppola would be cooking the post-auction meal at the three-Michelin-star Meadowood. Everyone thinks he isnt going to do it but hes preparing gnocchi for 800 as we speak.

Among the top selling lots in the barrel auction were The Mascot a Cabernet made from the younger vines of Harlan Estate, Bond and Promontory, which raised $73,550; and Melka Wines Mtisse Martinez Cabernet, which netted $62,600, while Shafers 2015 Hillside Select Cabernet went for $52,600. Napa has come of age on the world stage and the wines are now world class. The region is perfect for Cabernet its not too hot and not too cold, like the Goldilocks fairytale. Our Cabs are rich and concentrated but I dont think theyre too ripe theres a lot of luscious fruit there, Shafer Vineyards CEO, Doug Shafer, told WTG.

Inglenook on ice / Napa Valley Vintners

Rita Rae Fontenot, a podiatrist from Louisiana, got so caught up in the barrel auction bidding that she left with 10 cases of wine. I walked out with 10 cases as I bid early and was expecting to be out-bid but ended up winning them all, she confessed to WTG.

Dressed in a red linen suit, Coppolas son Roman was master of ceremonies at the live auction, which took place on Saturday night at Meadowood, a hotel-resort of unparalleled luxury set in acres of woodland. Women dripping with diamonds and men in pastel-coloured blazers arrived en masse, weaving their way through the parasol-dotted lawn to a giant white tent where they were enticed to bid on some of the 38 vintner-sponsored lots.

Drinking flutes of Schramsberg and nibbling on fennel arancini, wine trade luminaries like French consultant Michel Rolland and Petrus president Christian Moueix rubbed shoulders with Gina Gallo and her flamboyant husband Jean-Charles Boisset of Raymond Vineyards, wearing a pair of blue velvet slippers emblazoned with seahorses.

Mary Miner and Jean-Charles Boisset / Napa Valley Vintners

Boissets lot, which went under the hammer for $400,000, was one of the most glamourous of the evening a four-night stay on Marlon Brandos private island Tetiaroa, near Tahiti, where Obama recently wrote his memoirs and Pippa Middleton, the sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, honeymooned. French Polynesia was Gauguins dream and this magical island is the most luxurious place Ive ever been, he said.

The auction got off to a strong start with the first lot, which included three nights at Coppolas Niebaum Mansion and the chance to arrive in style at his Palazzo Margherita in Basilicata in his Falcon 7X private jet. Whipping bidders into a paddle-waving frenzy, the lot went for $460,000. Hoping for a higher sum, Coppola took to the stage and grabbed the mic. Just to let you know, the Falcon can seat 16 not six, he announced, then exited stage right.

While bidders got giddy on Krug, a brass band blasted out Hey Big Spender and flapper girls dressed in gold shimmied across the stage after a Balthazar of Screaming Eagle 2014 fetched $440,000. The top lot of the night came from Colgin Cellars. Featuring dinner at Alain Passards LArpge in Paris and lunch at Krugs Clos du Mesnil vineyard, auctioneer Fritz Hatton incited a bidding war that saw the lot won by three people, who paid $700,000 each for the experience, raising $2.1 million.

Rather than mingling with guests, Coppola slaved over a hot stove perfecting his pomodoro basilico peperoncini sauce for his signature gnocchi dish, which he served at an Italian-themed al fresco dinner after the auction. Hurry up, the food cant wait were on a schedule, he teased, as bidders fled the tent to dine under the stars. With a string band playing on the lawn and guests gorging on steak Fiorentina, Coppola had created a scene that could have come straight out of one of his films. I half expected a young Al Pacino to turn up with a shiner. In the end, wine and food is really all about show business, he said.

And if Auction Napa Valley is beyond your means, Adam Lechmere has 8 great affordable California wines

California and especially Napa has a reputation for excessive prices and overblown wines. The stereotype is true to an extent: cult wines like Harlan and Screaming Eagle do sell for up to thousands of dollars a bottle, and at every price point there are some pretty hefty wines, loaded with alcohol, oak and ripe fruit. But the pendulum has swung, and restrained Californian wines are now easy to find.

Heitz Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California 2012 Heitz Cellars is Napa aristocracy: Joe Heitz was making wine in the Valley in the 1940s. Now his daughter Kathleen Heitz Myers runs the operation, and style has changed very little: its still fresh, modest, with hints of luscious perfume but above all soft tannins, mineral acidity and fine blackcurrant fruit. Finesse and power. Average 40 Justerini & Brooks

Lang and Reed North Coast Cabernet Franc, Napa Valley, California 2014 One of the best Cab Francs in Napa. Fresh hay on the nose, damson, lots of juice, violet perfume, bright gripping tannins, delicate structure with excellent weight and balance. Restrained and delicious 20 average Reid Wines (Tel: 01761 452645)

Smith-Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, California 2013 From an estate high on Spring Mountain (brothers Charlie and Stuart Smith are pioneers from the 1970s). Bordeaux-like cassis and coffee with a layer of violet perfume. Fine acidity and silky tannins. One of the best Napa Cabernets youll taste 40 average Roberson Wine

Au Bon Climat Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir, Central Coast, California 2012 Sanford & Benedict is a vineyard with the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Santa Barbara: winemakers across California clamour for its grapes. Au Bon Climats Pinot is delicate, perfumed, with dark raspberry fruit and suave, silky tannins. A gorgeous wine for a great price 40 average. Noel Young, Hedonism

Saintsbury Chardonnay, Carneros, Napa Valley, California 2012 From one of Napas most-respected producers. This is old-fashioned (ie youll taste the oak) but by no means overblown. Carneros is just north of San Francisco Bay so benefits from cooling ocean winds. Flavours of pear and white stone fruit held up by brisk acidity. Fine & classic 19 Majestic Wine

Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Fum Blanc, Napa Valley, California USA 2103 Robert Mondavi called his Sauvignon Blanc Fum to give it edge in the market. This is a lovely example of Napa opulence, with an acidic backbone for structure. Lots of tropical lychee and guava, citrusy notes, very nice weight on the palate. A really seductive mid-level Napa Sauvignon Blanc. 17 average Drinks Direct.co.uk

Twomey Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, California 2015 The fruit is from Napa and neighbouring Sonoma. Fresh and perfumed with grapefruit, apple and honeyed flavours. Fine acidity and great persistence. 31.00 The Wine Treasury

Moobuzz Chardonnay, Monterey, California, USA 2014 Cool, old-fashioned nose with easy peachy sweetness, very open though and fresh on the palate, interesting hints of lanolin. Excellent 17 Roberson Wine

Five things Travel & Tourism needs to do to secure its future – eTurboNews

The World Travel & Tourism Councils 17th Global Summit in Bangkok, Thailand gathered together over 1000 public and private sector leaders from the international Travel & Tourism sector, Thailand. Participants included government ministers, the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, industry CEOs, and internationally recognized thought leaders in the fields of conservation, security, finance, and technology. As the flagship private sector event under the UN Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, the Summit centred around the theme of Transforming Our World and how Travel & Tourism can maximize its contribution to sustainable development.

The wide ranging conversations covered a broad field of issues, but overarching themes emerged. All of them reflect that the world may be full of challenges and unpredictable developments, and in this context especially the sector needs to be proactive to change the futureboth of the sector and the world as a whole. Identifying the issues is the first step, taking action is the necessary continuation. Here is what Travel & Tourism needs to embrace to transform our world:

Show leadershipstand up for the industry and beyond

The continued growth and development of Travel & Tourism needs leadershipand leadership that goes beyond talk. The challenges facing the worldclimate change, security threats, social upheavalare not easy ones to address. Without leaders, from the private as well as the public sectorstanding up and setting an example, progress cannot happen as fast as it needs to. This also means that leaders in Travel & Tourism need to see their role in a wider context and take a stand on global issues that are of importance to the sector.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals provide a framework under which businesses and leaders can contribute to a global effort. These objectives are challenging, but with strong leadership and committed action they will make a concrete difference to our world, and a global community which will in turn sustain the future of Travel & Tourism.

Be transparent, earn trust

Travel & Tourism is a force for good, but to be the best it can be the sector needs to be transparent and earn trust. This will require taking responsibility with well-defined commitments on issues including sustainability and using data and measuring to stay accountable. There are a range of challenges facing the sector which can be addressed by increased openness and sharingfreedom to travel, data sharing for security, environmental and social impactbut for these solutions to be successful people need to trust that systems are acting in their interests and using their information for the right purposes.

Recognize the individual

People want and need to be seen as individuals rather than being lumped into simple categorieswhether they be customers, employees, visitors, hosts, leaders or someone else. The sharing economy and increased personalization of Travel & Tourism services is a part of this, with each person wanting their own, customizedor customizableexperience. But individuality is also becoming a growing element of leadership. People want to see their leaders as individuals, and expect them to take responsibility and respond to demands as such.

Balance the global and the national

Sentiments of populism and nationalism have taken the spotlight in many parts of the world over the past year, and Travel & Tourism needs to take these developments seriously, while not forgetting about the global nature of the sector. There is a danger that in some parts of the world the current mood tends towards closing borders and making travel more onerous. Its important for businesses to recognize the issues and concerns behind these movements, but also show that open and free travel is a solution rather than an additional burden. To keep everyone engaged in this mission, the sector has to deal with local concerns that may complicate it, including challenges of overcrowding and destination degradation.

Look into the future

Successand even survivalwill depend on being prepared for what comeswhether they are forecasted developments or unpredictable events. The sector needs to continue to make improvements to accommodate the 1.8 billion international travelers that are expected to travel by 2030. This will require investment and infrastructure, but also open-minded approaches to the issue of overcrowding that some destinations are seeing. At the same time, Travel & Tourism needs to build resilience to be able to respond to and cope with the unexpected events and crises which look to stay a constant reality.
