[Exclusive Interview] Ferry Corsten: No Blueprint for Trance – EDM Sauce

Ferry Corsten needs no introduction; the man practically created the melodic sounds now known as trance music. Almost twenty years after he introduced us to the build ups and crashes of melodies, Ferry continues to explore the rhythmic harmonies of trance, allowing it to create a story through his latest album, Blueprint.

I caught up with Ferry at EDC Las Vegas right before he was about to take the stage and play amongst thousands of fans from around the world. Even though we did chat with Ferry earlier this year (you can read Meagen's piece here), he did get a bit more candid in regards to his take on the current state of trance (no pun intended) and how fan reception has been since his album release.

Q: You're about to perform at EDC Las Vegas for the hundred millionth time, tell me, do you still get nervous?

A: Haha. Yeah, I've played many EDC's and there's always excitement, but it's not the nerves anymore. The nerves have traded places with excitement.

Q: Any special guests with you tonight?

A: Yeah, actually. I'll be bringing out Haliene and she's going to be doing three songs live.

Q: You also just released a new album, Blueprint. Are you focusing on that for your set?

A: Yes I am. With a new album out, you really have something to present and there's a few tracks that I am including tonight. You don't have much time when you are playing at a festival, but I really hope I'm able to tell the story of Blueprint in the hour or so I have.

Q: What stands out the most out of your latest album, Blueprint?

A: The fact that the emotion of the music is backed up by a real story. Everyone always says, I'm doing an album and it tells a story. Well, this album ACTUALLY tells a story.

Q: You released the album with a narrative and then again without. Why?

A: That was always the plan. I knew that when I released an album with spoken word it wasn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. But that's the way I wanted to present the album, that is how I meant it. After a few weeks, we released it again for people who may not want to listen to the narrative. I knew that people would be like, I'm not too sure about the narrative. but I've also seen people who said on social media, man, I can't listen to the album without it.

Q: Now that you mention social media, how connected are you online and with your online fanbase?

A: Fairly connected. I don't like to have social media dominate my life even though it does create a fanbase.

Q: I'm asking because there's been a lot of debate online recently about what is considered Trance' music. You've been at the forefront of trance since the beginning, what's your take on it?

A: Well, on a personal level, I feel that trance is the sound that was big from 1999 until about 2004. I feel like I'm partly to blame for this because I started to experiment with a little bit of electro and gave it a little bit of a grittier sound.

But, what I really think that trance isit's not a sound, it's a feeling. I could listen to some techno DJ playing 122 BPM and then there's this amazing melody coming out of it and that could be trance. I could also listen to Aly & Fila at 140 BPM and I could get the same feeling.

Where I did see it go wrong was when the big EDM Big Room bubble spilled over into trance. I had to stand up and say, this isn't trance anymore.

Q: So it does affect you and the way you produce your music?

A: Yeah, of course it does. I'm very passionate about that sound.

Artist Shaming on the rise? – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

Earlier this week, Armin Van Buuren premiered his new track Sunny Days on his radio show, A State of Trance. It was a big moment for him and it was a highly-anticipated track. Of course, it wasnt the most trancy track, but it had a happy summer vibe which is exactly what he aimed to create and the track managed to do it successfully.

However as soon as the track was premiered, it received a lot of backlash from various people. Not everyone was very pleased with how the track sounded, and its okay. Not everyone has to like every track that is possibly released. Its perfectly fine. If one wishes to state their opinions regarding the same also, its not an issue. Each person can voice their opinions as they wish. But things start going wrong when people start shaming the artist for the work they have done. Its not positive and constructive criticism, but abuses that are hurled at the artist, which in my opinion is disgusting.

An artist doesnt choose to restrict his creativity to a specific genre. And if they wish to experiment with different sounds, its wholly their decision. If one is not in favor of it, dont listen to the track. Or listen to another artist who still chooses to make music within the boundaries of the specific genre.

One can never know if something will work out until and unless they experiment or try something new. Sometimes an idea if implemented well, may sound brilliant. In some cases, it may not. Doesnt mean that the artist has changed or chooses to produce a bad track. In the case of Armin, This is what it feels like was again not the most trancy track, but it got him recognition and fame and even a Grammy nomination. The track was not necessarily trance, and I personally am also not a great fan of the track, but it doesnt mean that the track was a bad one. If an artist chooses to take the safe path and produce work that is literally based off templates from his previous track, he is criticized for his lack of creativity. If he or she decides to try something new and tries to blend in a few elements from other genres, then also, they are criticized for not sticking to their so called specific styles or genres. So if both are wrong, what should he or she be doing? Because nothing that he or she makes will collectively satisfy everyone.

Who determines the rules by which an artist plays? Or who determines their so called styles? Why should an artist be restricted to a particular style of music, that too not out of his or her own free will? Embrace was again not the best album that came from Armin. It was not trance. But he had very clearly mentioned it that he was trying to experiment with different instruments with this album. Every track sees the incorporation of a different style of music and set of instruments with trance to produce a fusion. It was a unique concept, probably wasnt implemented too well to the liking of the people. But this doesnt mean that the album was terrible. It extremely upsetting to see people criticize it and curse the artist

When an artist plays a set at a mainstage of a huge festival, he or she is thrown in front of a mix bag. Crowds having people who love various genres of music. So, when they play a set, they have to take all of that into consideration. So, their sets tend to lean slightly towards the commercial side as it has the most crowd appeal. On the other hand, when they play a set at a specific genre dominated stage, they know that 90% of the fans love the genre and they can play a good set within the boundaries of the genre. Here, their sole priority is to appeal to the people at this stage and they can do it well. Just because they have to play a partly commercial set on the mainstage, doesnt mean they are sell-outs.

A similar situation was faced by quite a few musicians and artists who have gotten frustrated and eventually choose to leave the rat race. All that I am trying to say here is, as fans today, we tend to get a little too cynical about peoples work. If one cant appreciate what an artist does, its perfectly fine. You dont have to. Just because we have the freedom of speech and there is no form of moral policing on the internet, doesnt mean we can say anything derogatory to an artist. Today, I speak about Armin, because its the most recent one that has taken place. Its not like he isnt producing trance.Saint Vitus under his Gaia moniker was a good trance track. Probably not as good as some of his classic work, but yes, it was a good track.

Through this article, I do not wish to attack any genre or its fans. Its just directed toward that one section of people who tend to cross their limits when it comes to getting critical and negative about the work of a musician or an artist. Everyone has a choice when it comes to their listening preferences. Some may not like how an artist is progressing. Some may feel that the artist has become too commercial or cant produce as well as they used to before. But all I can request is, do not shame an artist. Do not put down their work and call it disgusting.

[Exclusive Interview] Fatum: Sealed Fate – EDM Sauce

Have you ever wondered why you don't notice when something impactful is about to happen in your lifethose seconds before your big break, a big announcement, a life changing moment? There are steps, events, that take place beforehand that eventually put you in that position, but one rarely notices them. In retrospect, you look back in your life and realize those specific moments led you to where you are at but you can never pinpoint those moments as they happen. Fate.

I had the opportunity to chat with one of the members of Fatum during EDC Week, and I'll be frank, going into the interview I was unaware of who they were aside from a little research. I knew of a few tracks they had remixed or produced, but nothing else.

Fate, as it turns out, put me in the position to interview one of the most promising, rising electronic music artists out there and after the one-on-one, I realized that these guys were on to something big.

Fatum consists of Bill Hamel, Chad Newbold, Bruce Karlsson, and Daniel Davis. With releases at Anjunabeats, Ultra Records and Armada, this quadruplet force have quite a bright future ahead of them. Oh, and did I mention a GRAMMY NOMINATION for a remix of JES's track Hold On?

Q: Welcome to the craziness of EDC Week. Hows it going?

A: Good, man. It's been a tiring week here in Vegas but we're powering through it.

Q: I'm really digging your remix of Late Night Alumni's Only For Tonight. How's the response been?

A: Good. The response is really, really, really good. When you take a little bit of a risk you never expect an outcome, but it seems like everyone is digging it.

Q: You're gaining new fans because of that track. What kind of sound can they expect out of Fatum?

A: Right now we're starting to mingle into the mainstream stuffnot too far, though. I wanted to come back into the trance scene and do it right. Everyone is calling it Trance 2.0, so let's call it that, but I wanted to dip into the good mainstream stuff the melodic side of it.

Q: You had a pretty big Anjunabeats show in L.A. back in May. How did that go?

A: Great! I haven't had a nice little adrenaline rush, especially coming back to trance, in a while. The trance fan's energy is way different than other fans. The energy that night at The Belasco Theater was really heartfelt and I haven't had that feeling in a long time.

Q: That energy is one of the main reasons I'm a trance fan, and as a trance fan, I look forward to Armin van Buuren's annual A State of Trance' compilation. You guys were featured on that, congratulations!

A: Thank you! I'm stoked about that. We had the track (Draco) ready for about half a year and we were just waiting and waiting telling ourselves, come on! Everyone will like this! and it finally happened.

Q: We're in the middle of EDC Week. Do you guys see yourself ever playing a set at EDC Las Vegas?

A: Right now we're right on the cusp of being able to play a big festival like EDC. For Fatum, I think if we hit it off this year with some good vocals, we may have a chance to gain a spot. EDC is tough, though. It was a lot easier back then, but now everyone's a DJ.

Q: You guys are just making it big on the scene, what can we expect out of Fatum in the near future?

A: We have two new tracks with Angel Taylor and she's been jumping on board and writing for us. Right now we're seeking new vocalists, trying that approach and getting people more connected with the music and then get into the more mainstream stuff. I really would like the trance elitists' to say, you know what, I can't hate it.

Keep an eye out for these four, something tells me that fate is on their side.

Give Fatum a listen on their Soundcloud.

Designated ecstasy holder caught with stash at city trance gig – Glasgow Evening Times

A WOMAN was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court after being caught with a class A drug at a trance gig.

Rebekah Carral was fined after she was found with 17 tablets of ecstasy.

The court heard the tablets were worth 170.

She admitted that on October 15 last year at the O2 Academy on Eglinton Street she had ecstasy in her possession with intent to supply it to others.

The 24-year-olds defending solicitor said his client had come through to Glasgow with a large group to go to a concert.

It was said that Carral of Eastfield Place in Edinburgh was holding on to the drugs on behalf of her group of friends and there was no intention to make any money from the stash.

A number of the girls had clubbed together for it.

Get into a trance with nature’s sounds – The New Indian Express

CHENNAI : Trance music came to India in the 90s and has been a sensation since then. Although psychedelic trance, a sub-genre of trance music, has been making its way to the hearts of young people, there continues to be misconceptions and myths about it. DJ Sandeep Sharma, who was in the city recently to play his project White Wizard, tells more about this genre of music.

When I started in 1997, I was playing a lot of electronic music and used to listen to a lot of other people who played psychedelic trance music. And soon, I started researching more on it, and before I knew it, I was playing it too he smiles.

Sandeep, who has played across the country and also abroad, says this is his second time in Chennai. I have met a lot of people from Chennai when I play in Goa. The response last time was great too, and that makes me really happy. I learn a lot from all my listeners, he adds.

White Wizard is a night-time psychedelic trance music project that is inspired from a lot of organic sounds of the forests and nature with some percussion and groove-ridden baseline. I am from Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh and have a great connect with nature. My music too is inspired from the sounds of nature. It is organic and I want to be able to connect with my listeners that way. It is a way of opening your mind and becoming conscious of yourself and your surroundings, he says.

Sandeeps passion for music drove him to pursue a career in it. Music is really close to my heart, and honestly, every day is a learning experience for me. I am always looking at evolving and expanding as much as I can.

Omnia, Speaking About His Future, Says Right Now, Trance is Back. – Dance Music Northwest

Is trance music dead? Once atopicfor discussion, 2016 saw that question finally laid to rest. Trance artists sawincreased bookings, large dedicatedtrance events like Blissin Seattle sprouted out of nowhere, psy-trance became a fad, and more! This year, the genre continues to soar to new heights.Fresh, youngartists are emerging and legends of old, ones who bounced to other genres, have returned home under new aliases. One trance mainstay whos set to have his biggest year yet? Omnia.

Before taking to the Digital Oasis stage last week at Paradiso, the Ukranian DJ/producer shared with us what fans can expect from him this summer, and beyond. Lets just say: trance family, you are definitely in for a treat!

Dont expect from me simple EDM, commercial big room stuff, DJ screaming in the microphone for the whole night, and things like thatits not me.

Contributing to trances resurgence last year, Omnia struck gold with Alien, released that April, and kept the hits coming. His remix of Armin van Buurens Face of Summer, Believe (featuring famed trance vocalist Audrey Gallagher) and All I See Is You (featuring Christian Burns, a legend in his own right), all released toward the end of the year, received massive support and placed on trance charts across the globe. He hasnt stopped since, teaming up with Johnny Rose for Why Do You Run and DRYM for Enigma to kick off 2017.

His Paradiso set saw a slew of new IDs and remixes, somehaving never been played on stage- a funtaste of whats to come.

The whole summer is going to be crazy with the new music from me and Im so happy about that!

Teasing a few more singles to be released in July and August, Omnia adds there are plans for an album to be released next year; in-progress now.

I think we are coming back to the trance roots right now. For some reasons trance music had too much EDM influences afew years ago, but that was just a trend I guess; people get bored of this too fast.

Right now, trance is back.

Happy days as Boks wake up from a trance – Citizen

It was a crystal clear indication that he was mulling things over before talking about the history which had been unrolled before him in the 35-12 Springbok victory over the Tricolores.

Well, he eventually said, that was truly worth watching. And though I have mentioned on several occasions in the past that I would never have the temerity to claim any expertise as a rugby pundit, it does strike me that the difference between this seasons Springboks and the disjointed team which turned out last year is astounding.

The nods from the usual suspects who go to make up the company which habitually assembles to watch sport over the weekends, showed graphically that they were in full agreement with the Silent One.

It is almost as if some enchanted being had suddenly arrived and awoken them from a deep sleep. And while it would be stretching the bounds of credulity to draw the comparison with Sleeping Beauty, for it strikes me that several players are lucky they can play rugby because they certainly are not pretty. It all seems to be working swimmingly for the Boks.

At this juncture it must be said that the oblique reference to the classic tale by the Brothers Grimm went straight past theArithmetically-challenged Golfer, a self-styled expert who tends to take himself far too seriously. But he did pick up on the dearth of film star looks in the Bok side.

Ill give you that Eben Etzebeth is not exactly an oil painting, but what do you want a Springbok forward to look like? Brad Pitt?

You also miss the point that his job is to help fire up the motor in the South African scrum, not pose for pictures. It was a point the Silent One was more than willing to concede, but couldnt resist adding a rider to.

I am sorry if I said anything to upset you over your favourite player. This was not my intention at all. I think though that the Boks seem to have a new purpose and a more concentrated direction. It is almost as if they have collectively shaken their heads and awoken to what it is they are doing out in the middle.

There are very few sides who could lose a captain like Warren Whiteley on the very eve of a Test match and throw Etzebeth in at the deep end as a replacement skipper, reshuffle the scrum to include a debutant, start with a stand-by scrumhalf and still come up with the goods. It truly points to a team who are confident in what they do and play together as a disciplined unit.

That opening of the conscious about what it means to operate as a team and play for one another rather than as a bunch of directionless individuals, strikes me as being the prime factor. In this summation, the Silent One showed that his understanding of the game of rugby football was perhaps far deeper than he owned up to.

Now, he said, if the South African cricket side are able to embrace this aspect, I am sure they would do far better. It is now a matter of record that this passed the Proteas by in their T20 against England in Cardiff, losing by 19 runs for yet another flop in the shortest form of the game.

Not surprisingly perhaps, the Silent One had heeded his own warnings and had not arrived to watch.

Classic album: Ferry Corsten on LEF – MusicRadar

Ferry Corsten doesnt like to keep still. Like some kind of Dutch trance shark, he has to keep moving else hell cark it. Constantly releasing, constantly reinventing himself, hes one producer that cant be pinned down. Case in point: His second album, L.E.F. He says the title stands for Loud. Electronic. Ferocious.

Apt, as the energy levels throughout are through the roof. Its also close to the word lef in his native tongue, which roughly translated, means daring or gutsy, and boy, is it that.

Corsten could have made a straight-up trance album. He could have followed the successful blueprint of his previous bangers, like Rock Your Body Rock from his debut album Right of Way. Instead, he plundered the 80s both for vibes and for vocalists, repurposing the voice of Duran Durans Simon Le Bon for the track Fire.

It was a time when I was getting out of the whole trance thing, says Corsten. I was getting motivated by a lot of stuff I was hearing around me at the time - in particular, the whole electro clash thing and the whole 80s electro sound.

Holed up in his attic studio, Corsten worked every hour in the day for well over a year with this sound, crafting beats in Cubase and tweaking his V-Synth. He was drawing on his dance music upbringing, and started to bring a grainy, vintage touch to his production, as well as broaden his palette with more electro and house tinges. It had attitude. It was distorted.

L.E.F. was more than, well trance. It was the perfect balance between old and new. Tracks like Beautiful leaped forward in years, while Cubikated shuddered with nostalgia for a bygone era.

Ive always been playing with that balance, says Corsten. But for this album I really brought that sound into what I was doing at the time: it was trance, but with sidesteps to the left and right. It was important to challenge myself to try and do something different.

As youd expect, Ferry Corsten continues to push the envelope today. Here, he takes, track by track, though the tour de force that is L.E.F..

This starts the album with some Morse code. It was just me really feeling out just how engaged the listeners would be. I was wondering if there would be any nutcases around the world who would take the time out to decode the hidden message.

What was it? Oh, it spells out Ferry Corsten, and the name of the album, L-E-F [laughs]. I hope someone made the effort.

This was the first track proper, and it was put here to really open the album. It really sets the tone of whats to come. I imagine most of my fans would have been expecting a trance album. This track was a bit more housey, with more of an electro vibe to it, and that sound would get explored more as you go along.

It was me saying, OK. This isnt going to be the one thing you expected straight away. They would get more of my classic sound later on, but for now I wanted to shake things up a little. Its a diverse album. Ive always been that way with my albums.

This features Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran. I was listening to one of their albums [1990s Liberty] and I came across a track that I wasnt too familiar with called Serious. The first line of that song is the one that I use here [Oh, woman you make me feel like Im on fire].

My management in the US were also the people who managed Duran Duran. I made a demo with the sample of theirs in, then sent it to them. The band just loved it, and loved the idea. I got the go-ahead, and after that I recreated some of the instrumentation, and it was done. It was also more of a housey track, but also the kind of track that works really well in a trance mix, which is what I made for some of my live shows at the time.

Yeah, this is a club banger. Ive always had a soft spot for vocoder voices as well, so I use that through here to go, Loud. Electronic. Ferocious. Thats me doing that. Just like when I did Rock Your Body Rock - that was me as well [laughs]. I like to mess with vocals sometimes.

It was a good track to put at this point in the album to keep the energy up. It was important to sequence the album like that, with lots of builds and drops - like a DJ set.

This track features another 80s musical icon: Howard Jones. I ran into him at the Amsterdam Dance Event. We were just talking about music and hit it off.

Yeah, hes a legend, and just the type of person I was looking for when I was putting this album together, so it made perfect sense to try and work with him. He was great. He dug my music and, of course, I was into what he did back in the day, so we decided to give it a go.

I made a simple demo for him and he wrote this really cool song over the demo, which pretty much became the song. If you listen to it, its very 80s. It has that [Roland] 606 drum sound and a very analogue vibe. It gave the whole album an attitude.

This is an update of one of my biggest trance tracks from back in the day. The original Galaxia was a B2 track on an EP I released in 96 under name Moonman. The A track was Dont be Afraid. I was just going through all this old Moonman stuff and found Galaxia again. I thought it could do with an update.

The original was super, super basic. I thought I could breathe some new life into it for the album.

The original was super, super basic. I thought I could breathe some new life into it for the album.

This started out as the house track, Forever. It was actually written by Ben Cullum [Jamie Cullums brother] and features Debra Andrews on vocals. Im not sure how I got hold of the acappella. I think it was through my publisher.

Id just picked up the Roland V-Synth, too. The V-Synth had this great feature where you could sample something and make it elastic, if you will. Then you could spread it out all over your keyboard, or do robotics. It was almost like a vocoder, but with a different effect. It did something really cool, like what youd do with Melodyne now, but live on the keys, which was really cool. I just loaded in the chords of Forever, and as I started playing around with this robotic voice on the keyboard, I struck trance gold [laughs].

I really just wanted to make this song a lush, lower-tempo trance track. It came out really cool and definitely has this magic kind of feel to it. It features Denise Stahlie on vocals. I was working a lot with two guys from Holland at the time, called Adrian Broekhuyse and Raz Nitzan. They were songwriters over here. They introduced me to Denise, and she was perfect for this track.

Denise is on this track, too. I had a completely different vocalist on this track to start, but it didnt really work. And as I was working with Denise already, I ran it by her to see if it was something shed be interested in being on. She loved it and gave a great performance.

Its really mellow, and on an album like this, its important to have that. Ive always wanted to show range; what Im capable of as an artist.

This had a bit more of a poppy vibe to it. I do remember that my publisher came up with a lot of vocalists to work with, so [Down On Love vocalist] Oz came from them.

Sometimes tracks just happen. Sometimes, I feel the more you just go with the flow, good stuff happens. If you look for something too hard, often it doesnt really come out. This was one of those tracks that just came out.

This is the original house track for the song that Ben Cullum wrote for Debra Andrews that I turned into Beautiful from earlier in this album. If you listen to Forever, youll notice that the B-section of the chorus is actually the part that I used in there.

I felt that I wanted to make an answer record to my track, Rock Your Body Rock. I felt that this new album was a great place for that. It wasnt too much of a successful outcome, but oh well [laughs].

The album format gives you chance to explore more tempos and moods. What I dont like about todays... Spotify industry, if you will, is that everything is so disposable, and its all singles-based. So everyone is just doing what people expect from them. Theres little room for fresh sounds and doing other stuff.

The album format gives you chance to explore more tempos and moods. What I dont like about todays... Spotify industry, if you will, is that everything is so disposable.

This features the rapper Guru [from hip-hop legends Gang Starr]. I remember playing around with [Ferrys 2002 single] Punk and thinking that Id like to do a new version. Then someone from the label in the states - Patrick Moxey, I believe - said, Maybe its cool to have a rapper over this? Im in touch with Guru; want me to ask him? It sounded like a long-shot, but he was in.

Well, to start with, he gave me one verse [laughs]. I was like, Yeah, its great. How about a second verse? Finally, he delivered and it was great.

It turned out great. And it gave a whole different idea to how Punk could be used as a melody.

This was like an ode to the old Cubik track by 808 State. That was definitely a track that sort of put me into electronic music at the time, alongside A Homeboy, A Hippy & A Funki Dredds Total Confusion.

This was an easy one. I made it just so I could put it in my sets. It also fits in with the whole 80s vibe I was bringing into the album as well. The whole mid-'80s electro stuff was a huge influence, but I dont want to call it a tribute album to the 80s because, at the same time, it was really looking ahead and forward with tracks like Beautiful, which was the next step in trance, if you will. But tracks like Cubikated were an ode to a previous era that I grew up in.

This track was inspired, in a way, by Leftfield. It was really one of those types of dubby, chilled tracks. But at the same time, I wanted it to feel trancey and melodic.

I never want to get known for just doing the same thing, which is why I do this left-and-right stuff - to keep challenging myself and what people expect of me. It was nice to put more chillout-type tracks on here to show that.

Ferry Corsten's new high-concept sci-fi album, Blueprint, is out now. For tour details, check his website.

Driftmoon talks India with Trancehub! – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

If asked to define Driftmoon, one can say Driftmoon is heart and mind combined into perfect harmony. Juraj Klicka, better known as the face of Driftmoon defines modern trance for all. It is pure, melodic, orchestral and puts the listener in a state of tranquil. So far every track by Driftmoon (including Drifter, Exodus, Leviticus, Howl At The Moon, Cama) have rocked planet trance and been supported by Armin Van Buuren on ASOT, earning Future Favourite and Tune Of The Week status on more than one occasion. Not only the king of trance but Aly & Fila, Markus Schulz, W&W, Solarstone, Jorn Van Deynhoven, Max Graham and the best of the rest are now hooked on Driftmoons phenomenal sounds.

The man flies down to India next week for a two city tour. Before he comes here, we sit down with him for a short Q&A about his expectations from here, his upcoming work and many other things!

Hi Juraj its lovely to finally have you perform in India! How does it feel like to finally come here?

Hi! Thank you for having me there and thank you for this interview. India has been in my sight for years even before I started making music. Its a beautiful country with rich cultural and historical heritage so its the place I want to visit of course, absolutely cant wait to breathe some of the history personally next week!

Have you planned to visit any places or looking forward to eating here?

India is a huge place and I would love to travel it all by train, which is what my sister did few years ago when she was traveling and backpacking there, I loved the photos ! It looks gorgeous. Also Indian cusine is one of my most beloved ones so of course, I will eat as much as I can there!

Driftmoon was a two-member project, which started off with you and Mikka. How did it all begin?

Driftmoon was originally a two member project made up of David Sherlock (owner of Freshly Squeezed Samples) and Miikka Leinonen, I joined the projects when they had difficulties finishing any of the tracks, they had great ideas (such as Drifter, Luminance, Howl At The Moon,) but they lacked technical skills to make the ideas into records, thats where I stepped in. David soon left to focus purely on FSS and Miikka left the project last year when he wanted to pursue a different path. I am fully dedicated to the project and Ive invested everything into making it a success.

How did you decide to name your project Driftmoon?

Originally we had huge problems with naming the project, we wrote down all our ideas on single document and then we were checking online which were available, Driftmoon was the last left and we went with it, eventually by the time we released a first track we found out that there is an indie game called Driftmoon as well, funny coincidence!

How did you start producing music? What inspires what you produce? Any specific place, person or an artist?

I started producing music when I was 15 but I didnt really get into it before I was 22, I went to study music and composition in UK and USA. By that time I already knew that I want to make and compose music full time for living.

Central Europe is a hotbed for trance producers at the moment, the change has come about in the last few years. What really led to this?

I think its a matter of geopolitical circumstances, situation in Europe allows young people to explore different aspects of life as well and it can lead many teenagers and adults to pursue career paths they wouldnt be normally allowed to.

Any artist you would like to collaborate with? Or you would like to play a B2B set with?

I take huge pride in my music and there arent many people I would love to collaborate with, I think only few (and classical) composers come to mind, no one from trance scene, sorry!

You happen to be a huge fan of tattoos. Which one is your most favorite one and why? Any meaning behind it?

I am huge fan of tattoos and the pain because even if you believe it or not, it cleans my mind because you have to be there and simply take it. It calms my mind down and I can focus more on important stuff. There are many I like but their meaning will be hidden, sorry!

You recently met Grammy nominated Cellist Tina Guo. Is there a collaboration on the cards? Could you tell us a little more about it?

I worked with her on my album already, she is an amazing person! I cant reveal anything for the future, yet

You have had fairly great relations with United Music Transmission, how did they start?

United Music Events are based in Prague even despite the owners are Dutch, they needed help with their show few years ago and one of the owners contacted me, now I am working full time on the show each year, another happy coincidence!

Any message for the Indian fans who are excited to see you in India?

I absolutely cannot wait to see all of you in India! It will be an amazing party, I promise you that.

Aston Manor Going Full Trance With Gabriel & Dresden and Bryan Kearney – Dance Music Northwest

Aston Manor, located in Seattles SoDo district, isnt known as a trance music destination. But that might soon change. After Andrew Rayel took his on-going Moments tour to Roy Astons social club earlier this month, team Aston and Stardust Events one-upped themselves with a double booking that has the Seattle Trance Family jumping with joy. Mark your calendars because on Thursday October 5th, Gabriel & Dresden and Bryan Kearney are taking over the Manor.

Kearney makes his Seattle return following an energizing performance at Bliss: Transcendence last month. The Irish trance powerhouse has been tearing up stages across the world with psy-heavy sets. However, his latest single, All Over Again, sees Kearney going back to his uplifting roots, teaming up with singer-songwriter Plumb to deliver an emotional ballad that will give you all the feels. One of the best in the scene today, Kearney alone is enough to get us excited. Throw in Gabriel & Dresden? What?!

Gabriel & Dresden are considered legends in the trance game, teaming up together back in 2001 for seven years before re-uniting in 2011. While Kearney is more up-tempo, these two are the opposite- opting for chillout, uplifting vibes. In addition to songs of their own, G & D have remixed the likes of trance Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Above & Beyond and more. At one point, the two joined JES, a renowned trance vocalist, to form the group Motorcycle best known for its hit As The Rush Comes. Together, the two are a force. Separate? Just as amazing. Gabriels Andain side project scored an all-time trance classic with Beautiful Things; Dresden matching that with remixes that ranked high on the Billboard Hot Dance and Club Play charts. Prepare to go back in time when the two take the stage.

Tickets go on sale next Thursday at noon. Will you be joining us for a night of beautiful trance under the Aston Manor chandeliers?

Artists you cannot miss at Luminosity Beach Festival – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

LBF or rather lovingly Lumi is all set to celebrate its 10thyear anniversary with the festival starting on 22ndof June. With the biggest names from the world of Trance having performed over the years, heres a list of some of the most anticipated acts set to perform this year.

If you are still looking to buy ticketsTickets: http://www.luminosity-events.nl/tickets Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1819200368309000

Firstly, the headliners! We have ATB, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz and Paul Oakenfold taking over the mainstage spotlight from Thursday till Sunday. These superstars are no strangers here and we can surely expect some solid music blasting through, especially from Ferry Corsten having just released a supermassive album! These Trance mega giants absolutely never ever disappoint.

For the first time ever Pure NRG is all set to perform! Now, both Giuseppe and Rich have performed solo in the past, however this new duo live concept surely is a definite no-miss.

Talking about live acts, We have Roger Shah returning as Sunlounger. Now this isnt exactly Ibiza, but where theres sand, there Shah! The Balearic maestro will provide some excellent melodic contrast to the otherwise hardcore uplifting madness. Absolute relief!

Orkidea returns back this year too. Now when we talk about Trance, we talk about the roots, the future, whats right, whats wrong, and whats pure. The Finnish Trance legend dominates the pure genre and it should be safe to say we can expect a lot of new unreleased material too.

No summer beach festival could be complete without a little bit of Genix. The Anjunabeats star is all set to make this a very fun party. Genix set shouldnt be missed. No! not even going to the bar during this one!

Sied can be a Rielly funny guy, we know it. No were not talking about his Vodka Booth here (maybe its rielly going to happen), but hes also here to play. Now Id recommend getting destroyed first at the bar, and then at the floor. You wake up next day and dont remember a thing. Classic Sied Van Riel.

Talking about destroying dance floors, we have Jordan Suckley! If youre ready to get Damaged (not permanently of course), this Tech Trance legend is surely set to deliver something epic. Hes a Trance DJ that scratches (really), how many even exist?

And finally on the list are German legends, Kyau & Albert. Maybe I am biased here, but probably no other artist makes those stabby euphoric club anthems like Kyau & Albert. Oh! And those vocals. Bliss

While every artist in the lineup is exceptionally talented and that one should absolutely try not to miss any, this list consists of artists you CAN NOT MISS. Youll be banned if you do (and what will you tell your friends?).

Tested at Bliss, Bryan Kearney Premiers Uplifting All Over Again – Dance Music Northwest

Bliss: Transcendence came and went, but reflecting on it revives some fun memories. A few of the biggest names in trance took to the stage at Seattles WaMu Theater last month for a night of music, love, and unity. Among the performers: Irish trance maestro Bryan Kearney.

Known for his high-energy sets, Kearney slowed things down at one point during his Bliss performance, unleashing a score of vocal anthems. One of those?: An untitled collaboration with American singer-songwriter Plumb. Untitled no more, Kearney dropped the curtains on All Over Againlast week on Armin van Buurens A State of Trance radio show. Featuring Plumbs angelic vocals and Kearneys uplifting score, this emotional ballad of love and forgiveness will give you all the feels- just ask anyone who was there when he played it at Bliss. Take a listen!

This isnt the first time the two have worked together. Kearney remixed Plumbs smash hit Need You Now (How Many Times) back in 2014, turning a poppy love song into one of the years best uplifting trance anthems. All Over Again.a stunner of a sequel.

While it currently does not have an official release date, according to Kearneys Soundcloud, this song will be released this forthcoming summer.

What do you think about All Over Again? Let us know in the comments below!

What We Like || Uplifting Trance – EDM Identity (blog)

What We Like is a new series that features genres we like in the electronic music scene. This months edition is focused onUplifting Trance!

What We Likeseries focuses on a sole genre that a contributor to the team is passionate about. Each month, that contributor will dive deep into the genre they care most about to bring you some history, information, and of course some music too. Our intention is to not just to provide some music for you to listen to, but to guide you on your journey in discovering new music or help you develop a deeper connection to genres you already love. This monthsedition of What We Like is focused on Uplifting Trance!

What is Uplifting Trance? This sub-genre of Trance has many aliases, including ones like emotional trance, epic trance, and even branching off into a sub-genre of its own called orchestral uplifting trance. However, what truly defines Uplifting Trance is the feeling that it gives you when youre listening to it. The rush The euphoria The pure bliss that reaches your ears, brings a smile to your face, and spreads warmth into your heart.

Its the type of Trance that can have you bawling from sheer happiness caused by just being in that beautiful momentor crying from deep sadness reminiscing on beautifulmemories from the past. When listening to it in a live setting, its the type of music that makes you want to hug a friend or significant other and just appreciate that you are sharing something so beautiful with someone you care about. Uplifting Trance truly evokes emotion in so many different ways, and thats why it is, and always will be my favorite genre!

Trance is said to have originated in the mid to late 1990s in Germany. These type of sounds had to be defined because it was a different type of sound than what was currently being played in Europes club scene at the time. The difference was that there was typically a breakdown portion of the song where the beat dropped and focused on a melody and then returned with a renewed intensity. It became instantly popular in Europe and spread very quickly.

It wasnt until the late 1990s and early 2000s that the more uplifting side of Trance started to show itself with artists like ATB, Delirium, Paul Van Dyk, and Ferry Corsten. Other artists such as Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, 4 Strings, and Above & Beyond to name a few were also involved in the progression of Uplifting Trance in the 2000s.

In recent years, this sub-genre of Trance has continued to carry on with artists such as Aly & Fila, John O Callaghan, Ferry Tayle, Daniel Kandi, and more. It has also branched off creating its very own Uplifting Trance subgenre mentioned above, orchestral uplifting.

There are many tracks that can be labeled as Uplifting Trance. Therefore, Ive simply picked out some of my favorite tracks, artists, labels, and radio shows that will help you get an example of what this Trance subgenre really is and why its so awesome!
