Berserker – Wikipedia

Berserkers (or berserks) were champion Norse warriors who are primarily reported in Icelandic sagas to have fought in a trance-like fury, a characteristic which later gave rise to the English word berserk.

These champions would often go into battle without mail coats. Berserkers are attested to in numerous Old Norse sources, as were the lfhnar ("wolf-coats").

The English word berserk is derived from the Old Norse words ber-serkr (plural ber-serkir) possibly meaning a "bear-shirt"i.e., a wild warrior or champion of the viking age, although its interpretation remains controversial.[2] The element ber- was interpreted by the thirteenth-century historian Snorri Sturluson as "bare", which he understood to mean that the warriors went into battle bare-chested, or without armor.[3][2] This word is also used in ber-skjaldar that means "bare of shield", or without a shield. Others derive it from the preferred berr (Germ, br = ursus, the bear),[2] and Snorri's view has been largely abandoned.

It is proposed by some authors that the northern warrior tradition originated in hunting magic.[5][6] Three main animal cults appeared: the bear, the wolf, and the wild boar.[5]

The bas relief carvings on Trajan's column in Rome depict scenes of Trajan's conquest of Dacia in 101106 AD. The scenes show his Roman soldiers plus auxiliaries and allies from Rome's border regions, including tribal warriors from both sides of the Rhine. There are warriors depicted as bare-foot, bare-chested, bearing weapons and helmets that are associated with the Germani. Scene 36 on the column shows some of these warriors standing together, with some wearing bearhoods and some wearing wolfhoods. Nowhere else in history are Germanic bear-warriors and wolf-warriors fighting together recorded until 872 AD, with Thrbirn Hornklofi's description of the battle of Hafrsfjord when they fight together for King Harald Fairhair of Norway.

In the spring of 1870, four cast-bronze-dies, the Torslunda plates, were found by Erik Gustaf Pettersson and Anders Petter Nilsson in a cairn on the lands of the farm No 5 Bjrnhovda in Torslunda parish, land, Sweden.[8][1] Two relevant images are depicted below, along with two associated woodcuts made two years later in 1872.

It is proposed by some authors that the berserkers drew their power from the bear and were devoted to the bear cult, which was once widespread across the northern hemisphere.[6][9] The berserkers maintained their religious devotions despite their fighting prowess, as the Svarfdla saga tells of a challenge to single-combat that was postponed by a berserker until three days after Yule.[5] The bodies of dead berserkers were laid out in bearskins prior to their funeral rites.[10] The bear-warrior symbolism survives to this day in the form of the bearskin caps worn by the guards of the Danish and British monarchs,[5] the Royal Life Guards and the Queen's Guard.

In battle, the berserkers were subject to fits of frenzy. They would howl like wild beasts, foamed at the mouth, and gnawed the iron rim of their shields. According to belief, during these fits they were immune to steel and fire, and made great havoc in the ranks of the enemy. When the fever abated they were weak and tame. Accounts can be found in the sagas.[2]

To "go berserk" was to "hamask", which translates as "change form", in this case, as with the sense "enter a state of wild fury". Some scholars have interpreted those who could transform as a berserker was typically as "hamrammr" or "shapestrong"; literally able to shape-shift into a bear's form.[11]:126 For example, the band of men that go with Skallagrim in Egil's Saga to see King Harald about his brother Thorolf's murder are described as "the hardest of men, with a touch of the uncanny about a number of them...they [were] built and shaped more like trolls than human beings". This has sometimes been interpreted as the band of men being "hamrammr", though there is no major consensus.[12][13]

Wolf warriors appear among the legends of the Indo-Europeans, Turks, Mongols, and North American Indians. The Germanic wolf-warriors have left their trace through shields and standards that were captured by the Romans and displayed in the armilustrium in Rome.

The lfhnar (singular lfheinn), another term associated with berserkers, mentioned in the Vatnsdla saga, Haraldskvi and the Vlsunga saga, were said to wear the pelt of a wolf when they entered battle. lfhnar are sometimes described as Odin's special warriors: "[Odin's] men went without their mailcoats and were mad as hounds or wolves, bit their shields...they slew men, but neither fire nor iron had effect upon them. This is called 'going berserk'."[11]:132 In addition, the helm-plate press from Torslunda depicts (below) a scene of Odin with a berserker"a wolf skinned warrior with the apparently one-eyed dancer in the bird-horned helm, which is generally interpreted as showing a scene indicative of a relationship between berserkgang... and the god Odin[17]"with a wolf pelt and a spear as distinguishing features.

In Norse mythology, the wild boar was an animal sacred to the Vanir. The powerful god Freyr owned the boar Gullinbursti and the goddess Freyja owned Hildisvni ("battle swine"), and these boars can be found depicted on Swedish and Anglo-Saxon ceremonial items. The boar-warriors fought at the lead of a battle formation known as Svinfylking ("the boar's head") that was wedge-shaped, and two of their champions formed the rani ("snout"). They have been described as the masters of disguise, and of escape with an intimate knowledge of the landscape.[6] Similar to the berserker and the ulfhednar, the svinfylking boar-warriors used the strength of their animal, the boar, as the foundation of their martial arts.[6][19]

Berserkers appear prominently in a multitude of other sagas and poems, many of which describe berserkers as ravenous men who loot, plunder, and kill indiscriminately. Later, by Christian interpreters, the berserker was viewed as a "heathen devil".[20]

The earliest surviving reference to the term "berserker" is in Haraldskvi, a skaldic poem composed by Thrbirn Hornklofi in the late 9th century in honor of King Harald Fairhair, as ulfhenar ("men clad in wolf skins"). This translation from the Haraldskvi saga describes Harald's berserkers:[21]

I'll ask of the berserks, you tasters of blood,Those intrepid heroes, how are they treated,Those who wade out into battle?Wolf-skinned they are called. In battleThey bear bloody shields.Red with blood are their spears when they come to fight.They form a closed group.The prince in his wisdom puts trust in such menWho hack through enemy shields.

The "tasters of blood" in this passage are thought to be ravens, which feasted on the slain.[21]

The Icelandic historian and poet Snorri Sturluson (11791241) wrote the following description of berserkers in his Ynglinga saga:

His (Odin's) men rushed forwards without armour, were as mad as dogs or wolves, bit their shields, and were strong as bears or wild oxen, and killed people at a blow, but neither fire nor iron told upon them. This was called Berserkergang.[22]

King Harald Fairhair's use of berserkers as "shock troops" broadened his sphere of influence.[citation needed] Other Scandinavian kings used berserkers as part of their army of hirdmen and sometimes ranked them as equivalent to a royal bodyguard.[citation needed] It may be that some of those warriors only adopted the organization or rituals of berserk mnnerbnde, or used the name as a deterrent or claim of their ferocity.

Emphasis has been placed on the frenzied nature of the berserkers, hence the modern sense of the word "berserk". However, the sources describe several other characteristics that have been ignored or neglected by modern commentators. Snorri's assertion that "neither fire nor iron told upon them" is reiterated time after time. The sources frequently state that neither edged weapons nor fire affected the berserks, although they were not immune to clubs or other blunt instruments. For example:

These men asked Halfdan to attack Hardbeen and his champions man by man; and he not only promised to fight, but assured himself the victory with most confident words. When Hardbeen heard this, a demoniacal frenzy suddenly took him; he furiously bit and devoured the edges of his shield; he kept gulping down fiery coals; he snatched live embers in his mouth and let them pass down into his entrails; he rushed through the perils of crackling fires; and at last, when he had raved through every sort of madness, he turned his sword with raging hand against the hearts of six of his champions. It is doubtful whether this madness came from thirst for battle or natural ferocity. Then with the remaining band of his champions he attacked Halfdan, who crushed him with a hammer of wondrous size, so that he lost both victory and life; paying the penalty both to Halfdan, whom he had challenged, and to the kings whose offspring he had violently ravished...[23]

Similarly, Hrolf Kraki's champions refuse to retreat "from fire or iron". Another frequent motif refers to berserkers blunting their enemy's blades with spells or a glance from their evil eyes. This appears as early as Beowulf where it is a characteristic attributed to Grendel. Both the fire eating and the immunity to edged weapons are reminiscent of tricks popularly ascribed to fakirs.

In 1015, Jarl Eirkr Hkonarson of Norway outlawed berserkers. Grgs, the medieval Icelandic law code, sentenced berserker warriors to outlawry. By the 12th century, organised berserker war-bands had disappeared.

The Lewis Chessmen, found on the Isle of Lewis (Outer Hebrides, Scotland) but thought to be of Norse manufacture, include berserkers depicted biting their shields.

Scholar Hilda Ellis-Davidson draws a parallel between berserkers and the mention by the Byzantine emperor Constantine VII (AD 905959) in his book De cerimoniis aulae byzantinae ("Book of Ceremonies of the Byzantine court") of a "Gothic Dance" performed by members of his Varangian Guard (Norse warriors in the service of the Byzantine Empire), who took part wearing animal skins and masks: she believes this may have been connected with berserker rites.[24]

The rage the berserker experienced was referred to as berserkergang ("going berserk"). This condition has been described as follows:

This fury, which was called berserkergang, occurred not only in the heat of battle, but also during laborious work. Men who were thus seized performed things which otherwise seemed impossible for human power. This condition is said to have begun with shivering, chattering of the teeth, and chill in the body, and then the face swelled and changed its colour. With this was connected a great hot-headedness, which at last gave over into a great rage, under which they howled as wild animals, bit the edge of their shields, and cut down everything they met without discriminating between friend or foe. When this condition ceased, a great dulling of the mind and feebleness followed, which could last for one or several days.[25]

When Viking villages went to war in unison, the berserkers often wore special clothing, for instance furs of a wolf or bear, to indicate that this person was a berserker, and would not be able to tell friend from foe when in rage "bersrkergang". In this way, other allies would know to keep their distance.[26]

Some scholars propose that certain examples of berserker rage had been induced voluntarily by the consumption of drugs such as the hallucinogenic mushroom Amanita muscaria[25][27][28] or massive amounts of alcohol.[29] However, this is much debated[30] and has been thrown into doubt by the discovery of seeds belonging to the plant henbane Hyoscyamus niger in a Viking grave that was unearthed near Fyrkat, Denmark in 1977.[31] Given that crushing and rubbing henbane petals onto the skin provides a numbing effect along with a mild sensation of flying, this finding has led to the theory that henbane rather than mushrooms or alcohol was used to incite the legendary rage.[30] While such practices would fit in with ritual usages, other explanations for the berserker's madness have been put forward, including self-induced hysteria, epilepsy, mental illness, or genetics.[32]

Jonathan Shay makes an explicit connection between the berserker rage of soldiers and the hyperarousal of post-traumatic stress disorder.[33] In Achilles in Vietnam, he writes:

If a soldier survives the berserk state, it imparts emotional deadness and vulnerability to explosive rage to his psychology and permanent hyperarousal to his physiology hallmarks of post-traumatic stress disorder in combat veterans. My clinical experience with Vietnam combat veterans prompts me to place the berserk state at the heart of their most severe psychological and psychophysiological injuries.[34]

Op-Ed || Pure Trance Argues For The New Over 1999 – EDM Identity

Thanks to the Pure Trance Team, arecent post on Facebookhas the collective Trance Family going crazy debating the context.

Today, the Pure Trance Team, headed under the direction of Solarstone, posted a simple image to Facebook and opened the floor to debate.

Heated comments have flown around the internet in relation to this post both in favor of the new and the classic. As a bonafide fan of the genre, and after reading the comments flowing around, I decided that it might be good to lay some context and to gather my personal thoughts on the matter.

In regards to history, it is extremely hard to say that Rich doesnt have respect for the classic styles of Trance. Heck, he helped write a number of songs considered by many to be classic tracks of the genre. Take the track Seven Cities as a prime example of just that.

Seven Cities was released in 1999, ripe in the era he discusses in the post above. It is perhaps a zenith track to epitomize the summertime mood and moving melodies of what Trance is. He does not deny how important these tracks are, nor does he lack respect for his own work.

Having been in Ibiza and on a boat party with him in 2015, I heard him drop this track as the sun set on the Mediterranean Sea. He loves this track and what it means to his fans. With that in mind though, remember he has continued to produce tracks year after year to continue moving the genre forward.

If a quick look back into the discography of the labels Solarstone has attached his name to doesnt show this, I admittedly dont know what does. We could take a stance and look at Pure Trance and Pure Trance Progressive onlybut lets dig a bit deeper into the history books.

From the Solaris-era youll find talents like Alucard, Mike Shiver, Mark Eteson, Mark Pledger, Bot Cipryan, Matt Cerf, Majera, LTN, and Forerunners. This doesnt even bend the page to see who was selected to create remixes under these artists, but Im picking out two samples below for you to peruse.

Here we find tracks by talents considered legend today Bobina, Magic Island (aka Roger Shah), Sunny Lax, and Agnelli & Nelson. The following two tracks from FKN and Bobina show off the style presented during the Deepblue Records era.

It is clear to see the foundation Solarstone comes from when developing his thoughts and releasing the statement he made on Facebook.

With the above all in mind, I offer this response in the debate in favor of Richs statement:

For the fans, it sounds strange but its about context. The comment is about supporting the new wave of up and coming talent say a Forerunners or Sneijder three to four years ago. It focuses on where the genre is heading, rather than the legends of yesteryear. In some ways, he means breaking away from old-school talent like Ferry Corsten and Paul Oakenfold (who chase trends over sticking to the genre) and giving new people a shot. Rich doesnt mean that the music they make today isnt good, or that it isnt Trance right now. He just wants to see support for the new at something like Dreamstate or the rebirth of Trance Energy.

Dont get me wrong, I love a ton of old-school Trance guys, and would love to see Johan Gielen get a set here. Im stoked to see Marco V play at Dreamstate and throw-down Trance. Yet, Marco V left the genre years ago and lacks any major accomplishment for the modern Trance community. Thats the context of the comment. He wants us younger guys in the scene, whove been working hard for years to get any recognition in our local or break into the national/international scene. Hes excited for people like Niko and Triceradrops to break through the ceiling and take the mantle forward. He wants talent like Magnus to grow and take over what makes the genre great!

Rich is tired of seeing events (and maybe it is a regional thing) that revolve around Trance of old, or bringing back talents that may have been popular around the turn of the century. I for one would rather see Forerunners over a Tiesto set at this point. Id rather see Shugz over Dash Berlin/Alice Deejay. Thats the point hes trying to make. In fact, a part of me really wanted to hear what Neptune Project would have done with a open-to-close set down in San Diego without the classics moniker.

Heres the magic there is no reason a DJ cant play classic tunes! If you want to strictly play a set of them, sure, label it as a classics set. When you have the table before you, open to take people on a journey, why not give them something vivid and new, instead of relying on memories of sounds gone past? As a DJ personally, Im not afraid to weave in Arksuns Arisen with modern tunes in a set. Ill take Marco Vs Godd and slam it into two FSOE Excelsior tunes or whatever.

I understand the counterargument for why Ferry/Paul/Dash are on lineups over the rising talent. That is not what he is discussing from the conversations weve had (the true cash flow issue of festival production and maximizing the base that comes through the door). Hes talking about why people like Alex Ryan or Ally Brown cant get a gig but people keep booking someone like Armin hoping for that magical classics set that blows all of our old-school minds. Why dont we stop wishing for the past to be the present, and focus on the present and future of the genre being great?

Essaouira to Celebrate Women’s Trance Music August 17-19 – Morocco World News

Rabat Essaouira has earned the title of the City of Trance. The host of the renowned Gnaoua and World Music Festival is offering its inhabitants and visitors another chance to rejoice in the rhythm of spiritual and trance music. The wind city will welcome the fifth edition of the International Festival of Womens Hadra and Trance Music, to be heldAugust 17 to 19.

The festival aims to shed light on the presence of women in Moroccan arts and culture and raise awareness of Sufi beliefs and customs, often misunderstood by the general public, said the organizers in a statement.

The festival will kick off on August 17 with a parade, followed with performances by various women artists, notably Africa Begue from Senegal, Al Maoulaouiya Al Masriya from Egypt, and the Moroccan troupe Lalla Menana de Larache, together constituting the feminine voice of Africa.

A meeting with the artists is scheduledat the Sidi Mohamed Museum at10:30onAugust 18. Evening performances promise a sance with Marrakechi band Jil Jilala, Bnatte Al Nakhoua Al Aisaouia from Fez, Zaouia Darqaouia Haraqiya, and Bnat Hadarat from Essaouira.

The festival will close to the rhythms of the world with Anandita Baso from India, Hassnaa Bacharia and Souad Asia from Algeria, and Al Mchaheb band from Casablanca.

Through its four previous editions, the International Festival of Womens Hadra and Trance Music has become one of the rare festivals of traditional womens music with international dimension, said the festivals organizers.

The festival is organized by Haddarates Souiriyattes association, which aims to highlight the place of women in Sufi music and to enhance their role in the cultural dynamic and influence of the city of Essaouira.

Otis Taylor brings trance blues back to Buena Vista – Chaffee County Times

What do Derek Trucks (Allman Brothers, Tedeschi Trucks Band), Tommy Bolin (Deep Purple, James Gang), Warren Haynes (Government Mule, Allman Brothers), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy) and Bill Nershi (String Cheese Incident) all have in common? Theyve all played with Otis Taylor.

In a summer replete with live music gems, Taylors upcoming performance 8:30 p.m. Friday at The Lariat is the crown jewel.

Taylors music has repeatedly garnered awards, and he has received critical acclaim for his work as a songwriter, a lyricist, a vocalist and an instrumentalist.

His music shows up in Hollywood movies like Public Enemy, starring Johnny Depp, and Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg.

Taylor calls his music trance blues, which he compares to Haitian Vodou music.

In an interview with BG Blues and Music News, Taylor describes trance blues as American trance music, cause its just drums. Theres no chord changes, its repetitive, and when you have something thats repetitive it puts people in a trance, you lose your sense of time.

Released in February, Taylors latest album, Fantasizing about Being Black, features renowned dobro player Jerry Douglas and jazz trumpeter Ron Miles.

The album combines new material with some older songs that examine the historical trauma of the African American experience through stories that ultimately reveal the enduring nature of the human spirit.

Taylor was born in Chicago, and his family moved to Denver during his childhood. I started off playing banjo at 14, Taylor said. His website shows a Denver Post clipping with a photo him playing banjo while riding a unicycle.

I was gigging by 65. After learning the banjo, Taylor moved on to the guitar, then blues harmonica, and he went to London to perform at the age of 19. But he eventually left the music scene for almost 20 years.

I quit music in the 70s, he said. I wasnt happy and didnt need the money. I had a little antiques business. I also ran a bicycle team in the 80s for 4 years.

In 1995, Taylor said, the bike team sponsor opened a coffee house and called some friends to play. One of them was Kenny Passarelli. We went to high school together.

Passarelli is a legendary bassist who has worked with Elton John, Dan Fogelberg, Hall and Oates, Stephen Stills and Joe Walsh; he also co-wrote Walshs hit single Rocky Mountain Way.

Passarelli convinced Taylor to perform along with guitarist Eddie Turner, and the favorable response to the show prompted Taylor to return to the music scene.

Since then, Taylor has recorded 15 albums, including White African, which earned him four nominations for the W.C. Handy Award (now known as the Blues Music Award) and won him the Handy for Best New Artist Debut.

The album explores the history of race relations and social injustice and addresses the lynching of Taylors great-grandfather.

Guitarist JP Johnson, son of Lariat co-owner Court Johnson, played on two of Taylors albums and toured with him.

JPs flying out to play with us for this show, Taylor said. Hes a killer guitar player. Ive known JP since he was 15 so this is a special concert to me. Wed like to keep it a tradition.

Taylor performed at The Lariat last summer, so the beginnings of that tradition are in place, and its one that will hopefully continue for many years.

Gasoline Lolipops leave a good taste

Colorado Daily readers voted Gasoline Lollipops the Best Local Musician/Group for 2017, and in 2016 Westword named the band Colorados Best Country Artist.

The Denver Post calls Gasoline Lollipops Uncompromised, vicious and authentic.

The bands music inhabits the sonic realm known as alt-country, where it is the wild, rambunctious punk rocker of the family.

The band members arrive in Buena Vista with a third album under their belts. Resurrection completes a trilogy that began with Death followed by Dawn.

In reviewing Resurrection, Scene Magazine says, Gasoline Lollipops has managed to take the well-tread turf of alt-country and make it feel newly discovered. There is nothing hasty about (Resurrection).

These are songs that have been road-crafted before a live audience . As a result, they almost immediately sound like classics youve probably heard somewhere. ... We have musicians who are considerate of each performance, and a production quality that honors the songs.

Band front man and singer-songwriter Clay Rose said the he and his fellow musicians are currently working on a new album scheduled for release Dec. 16 at the Fox Theater in Boulder and doing a Kickstarter campaign to fund it.

He said the album can be pre-ordered, noting, Its going to be our first vinyl release. Nobody has CD players any more but people like artwork and liner notes.

So Buena Vistans can expect to hear plenty of new material Friday.

Rose said the band has evolved significantly since its early punkabilly days. Its been a revolving door, but this incarnation has been together about two years now. We have six band members, all of whom live in Boulder County.

Muscially, Roses influences include outlaw country musicians like Townes Van Zandt and Willis Alan Ramsey as well as The Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix, folk music, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. My three main influences are Leonard Cohen for lyrics, No FX and Allman Brothers.

A sign of the bands growing recognition, come September Gasoline Lollipops will perform at Red Rocks Amphitheater for the first time.

Playing in Buena Vista will also be a first for the band, but Rose said hes traveled around the Upper Ark Valley quite a bit as he has a fondness for Valley View Hot Springs.

Meet Solarstone and Giuseppe Ottaviani, aka.Pure NRG!

I had an amazing time sitting down with the two of them atIlesoniqFestival in Montreal, Quebec to talk about how they got together to create such incredible beats!

Mix 247 EDM: How did you boys meet and what brought you two together to create a wonderful duo?

Pure NRG:We were both being managed by the same manager and one day we were having cocktails together in Sydney, Australia and we were talking about how one of us performs live and the other doesnt. Then our manager suggested that we should work together! Its funny because we were getting bookings together as a duo but we hadnt made any music yet! But we met up in Rome and started producing in the studio and made our first show!

Mix 247 EDM: As a du0, how many shows have you performed at together ever since your first show?

Pure NRG:We limit ourselves to 10-12 shows a year to keep it special! Its been about three years and weve performed around 30 shows. We do our own shows almost every weekend but as Pure NRG, we only do around 10 shows.

Mix 247 EDM: Since you two only limit yourselves to a certain amount of shows per year, where would you say your favorite festival or performance would be in your entire life?

Giuseppe: Beyond Wonderland is definitely a favorite!

Solarstone: I dont have a favorite! They have all been so great!

Mix 247 EDM: You two just recently played at a festival called Luminosity! Tell us about it! How does it compare to Ilesoniq and other festivals?

Pure NRG:Luminosity is a small festival, focused mainly on trance in the Netherlands that takes place at a beach club. It was very intimate but there was a real sense of a TranceFamily connection and thats why everyone who attends looks forward to it! The weather was pretty terrible the whole time but the sun came out when we played our hit Scarlett!

Mix 247 EDM: Who are your inspirations in music?

Giuseppe: U2 for sure! Muse is also great!

Solarstone: I get inspired by classical music and talk radio! When I say classical music, I dont mean to sound like an asshole because its more like neoclassical and modern stuff on contemporary labels.

Mix 247 EDM: If you had to pick any kind of superpower, what would you choose and why?

Solarstone: X-Ray vision! That way Id get to look at peoples internals!

Giuseppe: I like flying!

With over two decades of work on their side, Kyau and Albert are names that every trance fan is familiar with. As their release their 5th studio album, Matching stories and also happen to complete 20 years with their record label Euphonic,we sit down with them and discuss everything from music to tours and plans ahead.

1) Hi! Firstly, congratulations on the release of Matching Stories! Its you fifth studio album! How does it feel having released it?

Ralph Kyau: Really happy that the album is out. It was a lot of work and also hard choice to select the tracks for the final album. We did much more demos as we finally took on the album. Dont know exact number but guess we made almost 50 demos over 1.5 years.

2) What was the idea behind naming the album Matching Stories?

Steven Albert: We had a couple of name ideas for the album and Matching Stories pretty much tells what we mean with choosing the final 14 tracks from so many tracks we produced for the album.

3) How have your fans responded to the album until now? Has it matched your expectations?

Ralph Kyau: Were excited about the response from our fans about the album, especially about the German vocal tracks like Mein Herz.

Steven Albert: It is the first time that I sing in my mother tongue. There are 2 tracks and all of my German friends love it. Not sure if it is for our fans who dont speak German, but I havent heard any negative feedback. We have all lyrics in the CD booklet, so people can read and learn some German, haha.

4) We see you experimenting and being open to do a lot more vocal collaborations in this album. How did it all happen?

Ralph Kyau: Our plan was to make the album diverse with female vocalists while listening and set a contrast to Stevens male voice. We wanted to have some female vocalists who didt worked at too many Trance releases before.

5) Love letter from the future, your collaboration with Adaja Black, narrates a love story that wasnt successful. What inspired the track? Is it based on a real-life story or experience?

Steven Albert: Adaja Black wrote the lyrics to an instrumental we sent her.

6) Which artist/vocalist did you look forward to collaborating with the most?

Ralph Kyau: I was really interested to work with Adaja again. She was on our last 2 albums before and we like her alot, also we were really interested to work with Jeza for the first time as we always loved her voice. Started to work with Jeza end of last year. The contact to Madeleine Wood came through Francesco Sambero, who both worked with us on one track of the album called Gamla Stan.

7) If you had to pick one track from Matching stories to which you were most connected to, which track would it be?

Steven Albert: I love the album in whole, every track is a story for me.

8) With the album having come out, can we expect an album tour to follow soon? Which cities would you be looking forward to performing at?

Ralph Kyau: We kicked off the album tour in early June with a 6 hour set at Avalon Hollywood and will still tour around the world till early 2018. For all dates best to check kyauandalbert.com or our socials.

9) You have released your 5th artist album and your record label, Euphonic records also completes 20 years this year! Two milestone events in your career! How are you celebrating both? And how does it feel to have achieved so much?

Steven Albert: As the artist album is finished we plan now two E.P.s under 20 years Euphonic and an album end of the year.

Ralph Kyau: Right now were updating our 10 year old remix for 6am by Cressida. Additional a few label acts do remixes for big Euphonic classics. All these remixes to be featured under 20 years Euphonic. For example remixer names here are Beatsole, Stoneface & Terminal, Johnny Yono, Maywave, Steve Brian pres Cabriolet Paris.

10) What does the future have in store for Kyau & Albert and Euphonic? Any big releases or news?

Steven Albert: New originals soon by Beatsole, Steve Brian and Maywave. But much more planned.

Ralph Kyau: Our collab Changes with Hello Machines gets a single soon, also Mein Herz gets a single including a Trance remix. Furthermore, were doing a collab with our long term label mate Ronski Speed right now. This one is getting huge! Release later this year.

As part of their yearly routine, Forbes reveal its list of highest paid DJs for the year again. The magazine, known for featuring pieces on finance, business, marketing and money, started documenting the highest paid DJs since 2012 and the tradition still follows.

This year, the list features artists such as Calvin Harris, Marshmello, and Tiesto amongst those who have walked away with a high bank balance.

2. Tiesto ($39,000,000)

3. The Chainsmokers ($38,000,000)

4. Skrillex ($30,000,000)

5. Steve Aoki ($29,500,000)

6. Diplo ($28,500,000)

7. David Guetta ($25,000,000)

8. Marshmello ($21,000,000)

9. Martin Garrix ($19,500,000)

10. Zedd ($19,000,000)

From the list, a few facts come out super clean. The maximum money is earned by artists who make your clich commercial music. No artist from any other genre including techno, trance, trap or deep house or any other sub genre feature on this list. Is this probably why Tiesto switched? And is this probably why most artists are taking the commercial route? Well, ill leave that upto you!

Meet Graeme Shepherd, aka.GRUM!

Originally from Glasgow in Scotland, he has recently found himself as one of the top ten selling progressive DJs in the world! His two most recent singles, Shout and Under Your Skin, has accomplished #1 in progressive & trance charts, along with being supported by well-known artists such asDanny HowardandDeadmau5. What a hard-working guy!

I had an amazing opportunity to ask him some questions about his background behind his music and how he feels about his tour.

Mix 247 EDM: Being born in Scotland, trance is usually big over there what were other reasons why you wanted to start producing?

GRUM:I just really liked the idea of pulling tracks apart and then seeing how they were put together. The idea of bringing sounds together and making them into something enjoyable to listen to seemed like a good challenge to me.

Mix 247 EDM: Why did you make your main focus on trance? Any inspirational ideas, stories, etc.?

GRUM:Although Im not really proper trance, I think the fact the music contains a lot of emotion was the real draw for me, and the older stuff from around the Millennium has definitely inspired my sound!

Mix 247 EDM: When did you start touring internationally, besides only in Europe?

GRUM:Pretty much from the start of my career in 2009 Ive toured worldwide. I used to do more electro/80s inspired stuff years ago, so I got a lot of touring under my belt during that period.

Mix 247 EDM: Your recent remix of Seven Lions Higher Love just came out, want to give us an exclusive commentary of the background of your remix?

GRUM:I first heard that track when I was on theSeven Lionstour at the end of last year. He played the original version every show and it really got stuck in my head. Anjuna asked me to remix it a few months later and I was really happy to have a play around with it. I wanted to go quite stripped back with it to give the vocal space to shine!

Mix 247 EDM: I want to talk about one of your remixes, Shout, byTears For Fears. What inspired you to remix that particular song?

GRUM:That was an idea I had been toying with for a while but couldnt quite get right. In the end, it came together nicely just a couple of days before ABGT 200 so I figured that would be as good a place as any to give it the first play. I hadnt intended to release it but Anjuna was keen. Its done really well so Im happy it came out in the end.

Mix 247 EDM: Do you plan on producing more 80s remixes?

GRUM:Its not something that I particularly want to become known for, but never say never!

Mix 247 EDM: Who were your inspirations growing up?

GRUM:I was really into trance when I was a teenager. People likeFerry Corsten, Gabriel & Dresden, Nalin & Kane, Push, etc. Definitely stuff on the more melodic side. A bit of 80s soft rock in there too (thanks, dad!).

Mix 247 EDM: What are your favorite things about each continent that you have toured internationally?

GRUM:Europe: Each country is small but has its own identity, food, culture etc. On a tour you can be in a completely different place every day.America: I love the energy and enthusiasm for the music over here (and obviously Texas BBQ)!Australia: The weather, beaches, and laid back attitude.Asia: Futuristic toilets!

What Made Us Fall in Love with Trance. – Trance Hub (satire) (press release) (blog)

Wikipedia describes Trance, as a collection of melodic loops mixed with a progression of soft & fast beats. However, ask a trance fan from anywhere around the world and Im sure they will agree with us when we say that there is way more to it that just the beat or the melody.

Each one of us has a different perception of this six letter word, but perhaps the essence of every description will remain uniform. The most unique thing about trance that separates it from other genres is the fact that despite each track being starkly different from each other, it still manages to connect us all and take us to that utopian place we all look forward to being at. Words like Journey, Blissful and Uplifting have been so commonly associated with the genre, its almost become synonymous to what trance stands for.

In the universe of electronic music, trance has always been a genre that has been associated with spirituality. Several mortals like us have always found comfort in it. However, as unfortunate as it may seem, people these days have been ridiculing the genre and its artists. In fact, they have even gone a step ahead and deemed it as a dying art.

Probably, they have never experienced moments where the mid-climax of a trance song has covered their entire body with goose bumps, or had their feet tremble while listening to the haunting yet beautiful vocals or the feel a surge of emotions which makes you want to cry and smile at the same time.

Well, to all of them out there, all we can do is sympathise with them, because honestly, no matter how much you try, these feelings cannot be bought. It can only be experienced. Moving further, since we are anyhow discussing the genre, we also will shed some light on the two major aspects that form the crux of the scene, the artists & the trance community or the fans.

Going back to old school analogies, trance has been blessed to have artists that have always looked to build and improve the genre. They are the Knights templar, the humans who have always done everything to protect the Holy Grail which bears the origins of the genre. If artists are the gladiators in the field of music, the trance community is the loudest community in the Colosseum, always motivating and cheering its heroes.

Each artist in this field has managed to incorporate different elements and modify the sounds to not only create musical masterpieces to please their fans, but to also broaden the horizons of the genre and to provide a multi-faceted music experience.

Trance fans are probably the warmest people on earth. No wonder group hugs amongst random people who may be absolute strangers are one of the most common sightings during trance gatherings. These songs have the ability to bring people together as ONE. Most of all, its only this genre that we have the concept of a trance family. The reason why we fell in love with the genre is not solely because of the music, but also the all round experience and the community. The feeling of walking through the doors of an event and letting loose is one of the most euphoric feelings we have ever experienced. Its not about the drop or the 1, 2, 3 jump clich chant. Its more about actually connecting with the music on a spiritual level which is absolutely surreal.

Also, no one is embarrassed or ashamed to show their feelings. In fact, the genre encourages you to look into the depths of your soul. That is the reason you see people crying at these events. They are surrounded by people who hold them and hug them and share the emotion with them. The genre bonds people together. People have walked in here and have ended up finding their soul mates. In fact, the both us writing this piece, also met because of trance. So many of us have friends from all across the globe mainly because of the genre. This is the beauty of trance.

What is even more beautiful to watch is the fierce loyalty of the fans. They swear by the genre. Most of all, the artists also do understand the responsibility that comes with their positions. They are extremely approachable and they understand the gravity of their impact on the lives of the people listening to their music.

Maybe Trance is not on the main stage anymore, but we feel that it doesnt affect the way the ones true to community think. As long as all of us are able to sway our hands in the air & feel each beat, feel each moment and sometimes even cry randomly, we are fine even if we get a small space to listen & dance to the sounds of the genre we love. Because, when we fell in love with the genre, it was not because it was popular or because it was commercial. We fell in love with the sounds, and it is the only thing that will matter.
