TROY Troy Main Street will treat its Style Showcase Fashion Show guests to an evening of 2017 spring fashions from downtown Troy boutiques and dcor shops.

TUPELO The Tupelo Middle School robotics team is gearing up for a competition against students from across the state of Mississippi, many of whom are in high school.

The team, the Tupelo Wavebots, will compete at the FIRST Tech Challenge state robotics competition on Saturday in Oxford against 23 other teams.

Judy Harden, robotics teacher and coach, said the team of seventh- and eighth-grade students usually competes against mostly high school robotics teams.

Thats a big deal, Harden said.

This is the first year the team has competed at the state level, and if they do well, they could qualify to compete at the national level, too.

The team began during the 2015-16 school year as an after-school club, but Harden said the students didnt compete much.

Now, TMS offers the class as an elective, and the team is made up of students in the class. They work on their projects during class and after school on some days.

The class is split up into teams that each focus on a different competition element art, programming, marketing, recording data and building.

At competitions, all of these moving parts come together. The teams robot battles against other robots, performing certain tasks given to the students ahead of time so they can program the robots to do them.

The students must also make a presentation of the work theyve done prior to the competition, including recorded data, how they programmed the robot and other details.

Daven Sanders, a seventh-grader, helps program the robot, developing skills he says will help him out in the future.

It helps me for what I want to be when I grow up, which is an engineer or an architect building things and making things move and designing things which is basically what I do in this class, Sanders said.

The presentation also includes a marketing component in which students must pitch their robot as a product.

They get to use these skills in real-life situations, Harden said.

In Hardens classroom on Monday, Race Davis busied himself trying to make improvements to the teams robot.

Davis said he is confident, but not overconfident, about the teams chances in this weekends competition.

I know that were not going to do terribly, Davis said, with a laugh.

Although the team could qualify for the national competition this weekend, Davis said hes trying not to think too far ahead.

Were just trying to get past state at this point, Davis said.

TMS robotics team headed to state - Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal

Once again, Texas Motor Speedway track president Eddie Gossagein Fort Worthis being weirdly territorial about the rest of Texas after Austins Circuit of the Americas expressed interest in a series that runs at TMS. Um, do you guys own a map? In any other, smaller state, Fort Worth and Austin would probably be in different states.

COTA chairman Bobby Epstein recently expressed interest in hosting NASCAR. COTA, of course, is a road course instead of an oval like TMS, and its a full three and a half to four hours away by car from TMS.

But nope! NASCAR dates elsewhere in Texasthe second largest state in the countryfall under a regional protection clause in Texas Motor Speedways five-year contract with the series, per Autoweek.

Gossage made short work of reminding everyone that TMS called dibs on NASCAR first to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram this week:

I dont blame [COTA] for wanting NASCAR races, its just that theyre 20 years too late. I dont think they know the business, or they wouldnt be saying such things.

This is asinine, not to mention pretty condescending. These tracks are 221 miles apart by car, according to Googleand most of those miles are on the Godforsaken hellscape of perpetual construction known as I-35.

To put this spat over Texas race dates in perspective, this is like if Homestead-Miami suddenly got up in arms that Daytona was 287 miles away, or if Martinsville decided those dweebs 173 miles away at Bristol shouldnt get to have a race anymore. (Martinsville and Bristol even race in the same month this year!)

Sure, there are situations where nuisance at a nearby race would be understandable. If you know a race is going to draw people in from all over Texas, dont put the same series back-to-back at TMS and COTA in the same month.

But NASCAR only races at TMS twice a year, allowing plenty of time to sneak in a road course date that would be a welcome addition for many NASCAR fans who want to see more right turns on the schedule. Better yet, NASCARs road course dates attract race fans who dont often come to NASCAR races, which might even convince more people to make the drive up to TMS if they liked what they saw at COTA.

To their credit, TMS puts on a pretty good show whenever Ive been up there, right down to the flame-spewing, car-eating Robosaurus. Thats why I think Gossage needs to heed his own words when he said this to the Star-Telegram:

We have 20 years of history with NASCAR, theres a long history there and our company is one of the biggest clients in the world for NASCAR. This story doesnt concern us.

TMS has been working with NASCAR for ages, which is exactly why any race several hours awaybe it at COTA or somewhere else in the statethats spaced out well away from TMS dates on the calendar shouldnt be a concern at all.

Eighth grader Jasmine Collins looks to the basket during a game earlier this season.

Thermopolis Middle School's seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams had their final games last weekend, with eighth grade attending conference in Powell and seventh playing here.

Seventh grade coach Kent Hessenthaler said his girls played very well, but lost by just three points to Worland in a "barn burner".

Their second game of the day was against Riverton, however, the girls lost that one by five points after leading through most of the game. Hessenthaler said they just seemed to run out of gas in the last half of the last quarter, with Riverton outscoring the girls 6-0.

"We were handicapped by just having seven girls playing the tournament," he said. "One of our girls missed the tournament due to a prior commitment and we missed her a lot.

"Playing against the larger schools with many more players was tough on us. Still, I'm very proud of our girls. They gave 100% effort in both games."

Seventh grader Layne Myers puts up a shot during the Yellowstone Conference Saturday.

Hessenthaler added that this is an incredible bunch of young ladies with a bright future.

"It's Monday evening and I miss them already," he said. "I feel like I should be at practice right now. Every practice and game this year was a pleasure.

"I commend them and their parents for a great season."

The eighth graders faired better, coming away with a fifth place win. Coach Katie Despain said, "The season overall has been a lot of fun. The girls have been improving from game to game.

"I am excited to watch the girls next year at the high school level. They have a lot of potential and will become even better athletes moving forward.

"I could not have asked for a better bunch of girls to coach this year. I will most certainly miss them next year!"

It was a sword produced in the style of a Norwegian langseax, however, that took home the inaugural TMS Wadsworth-Sherby Bladesmithing Grand Prize when the winners of the competition were announced on February 28. Did you catch last ThursdaysRiverdale? This weeks episode brought up all kinds of family blood feuds, Jason Blossoms memorial service, and a really creepy Gothic mansion.

In this episode, Keisha and I talk about how our love for Cheryl Blossom grew tenfold in this episode, and her growing friendship with Veronica is a wonderful thing to see. After all, who better to help the spoiled, mean rich girl than a reformed rich girl? Maybe these blossoming friendships will be enough to bury the feuds between all the adults, which we found out this week were all over maple syrup.How could such a wonderful, beautiful thing cause so much hate and evil? We dont really understand how maple syrup works, but we dont appreciate it being soiled like this.

Heart of Darkness was also one of the creepier episodes, and we love all the Gothic elements from theCrimson Peakvibe we got at the Blossom mansion to the snake in the box sent to Hermione Lodge. Were starting to uncover some lies and secrets behind Polly and Jasons relationship. Our current working theory is that Polly was/is pregnant, and might be locked away unfairly so she doesnt snitch on someone. It would certainly fit in with the Gothic vibe were seeing now.

On a lighter note, Archies musical journey is going well! With the gross predatory Ms. Grundy gone, were seeing him get closer to Val (who we both agree is too good for him) and start to work in some balance. Naturally he has to compromise a bit, and its refreshing to see the film take on improving as a musician and having multiple commitments in an honest way. One might even call Archie a red-headed Troy Bolton, torn between sport and song until he discovers he can doboth. Were all in this together, yall.

The O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 NASCAR doubleheader weekend is not for another 42 days but that didn't stop fans from pouring into the infield of Texas Motor Speedway this weekend.

Fans from across the region celebrated the start of the 2017 NASCAR season during Texas Motor Speedway's Daytona 500 Watching Party held in the infield of the 1.5-mile speedway.

"We had the biggest Daytona 500 Watch Party in the country so a lot of fans came to kick off the season in style," Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said. "If Sunday's Daytona 500 is any indication, this is going to be a wild season. So many fans at Texas Motor Speedway over the weekend tells me there is tremendous interest in NASCAR for 2017."

The two-day event proved to be the largest watch party for NASCAR's season opener as more than 3,000 campers and tailgaters took part in the free event. Fans lined up their campers as early as Thursday, waiting for their opportunity to select their infield spot when the gates opened. The event, which began Saturday and continued through Sunday's Daytona 500, offered fans the chance to enjoy the start of the race season surrounded by thousands of race fans, watching all the action from Daytona International Speedway on "Big Hoss" - the world's largest TV.

"We missed last year and it looked like fun when you see everything on Facebook getting posted about all the campers rolling in," said Wally Villarreal, who drove nearly three hours from Austin to attend the watch party. "So we decided to come up. We just love this. I love NASCAR. This is my home track. What else can you say?"

Texas Motor Speedway's Daytona 500 Watching Party offered more than just racing. Fans were treated several entertainment options throughout the weekend with a two-day cornhole tournament, performances by country artists Larry Joe Taylor, Brad Puckett and Deryl Dodd, along with the comedy classic "Stroker Ace" shown on "Big Hoss."

Officials have deemed Tonganoxie Middle School to be safe Thursday afternoon after a student reported a threat being written in a bathroom stall.

The student reported the note being found in a boys' bathroom about 11:45 a.m. Thursday, according to a statement from the Tonganoxie USD 464.

Tonganoxie police were called to TMS to investigate the threat and assess the credibility.

Students are safely secured in classrooms and Tonganoxie police have searched lockers and determined the building to be safe, according to the statement.

We consider any threats to be very serious," said Tonya Phillips, interim district superintendent, in the statement. "The safety of our children and our community are our top priority.

"Thankfully, no weapons were located during the search of Tonganoxie Middle School."

Tonganoxie police are reviewing video footage of the area outside the bathrooms and determining how to proceed with the investigation. Additional police will be at TMS the rest of Thursday and Friday for extra precautionary reasons.

The incident remains under investigation by authorities.

Last March, a threatening note also was found in a Tonganoxie High School bathroom. Investigation into that incident didn't determine who wrote that note.

The Company estimates that as of December 31, 2016, it had 22 million of cash on hand.

Fifteen million Americans live with depression. The most common way theyre treating it is with anti-depressant drugs, but half of them either cant tolerate the medicine, or they arent responding to it.

Now doctors are using a non-invasive treatment for depression, and it seems to be offering promising results.

I cant take care of myself. My husband takes care of me when I get this way, said Judy Davis.

The 60-year old doesnt usually talk about the low points in life. But she did with us.

Davis is a wife and grandmother who has lived with bipolar disorder for 38 years.

I'll become suicidal when I get depressed, and very, very ill," she said.

Medicine after medicine didnt help Davis. Then she tried something different called Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS.

The magic is in a helmet that looks like a hair dryer at a salon.

Try to imagine the brain like a strong battery, said Board Certified Psychiatrist Diana Ghelber.

Dr. Ghelber explained how it all works: the helmet uses a magnet to stimulate parts of the brain that regulate mood. Neurons start firing -- creating connections, a rapid response, and over time, improved symptoms of depression.

During the treatment we already notice a change, said Dr. Ghelber. A lot of times the family members and friends -- they notice a change before the patient is aware."

Changes include better posture and eye contact, improved energy, even a shift in motivation and social engagement as early as two to three weeks into treatment.

So far, Davis has received 30 TMS treatments, which each last about 20 minutes. She admitted there is some pain.

It makes your lip quiver and it hurts your teeth, but it lasts for just a few seconds then it stops and starts again, said Davis, who was quick to add, But it's worth it."

Davis said the pain is worth withstanding for the results and the relief it has offered.

Ive been well, I'm on a low dose of medicine now. I feel great, said Davis, who described herself as happy and living a normal life for the first time in most of her adult life.

I haven't felt this good in years," said Davis.

TMS treatment is FDA-approved and Dr. Ghelber said most insurance will help to cover or reimburse the cost of treatment.

This past holiday season, my son received NBA 2K17 for Xbox One from his grandmother. He opened it up, popped it in and started playing. A couple of hours later, he asked me to play against him. I grabbed the box to read the manual. Silly me. There is no manual for these games. Well there is, but it is a small page with a link to the online users guide. Im guessing not many 13-year-old boys are studying that webpage.

If you ever played this game before, you know that it is some complicated software. It is no doubt every bit as complex as many of the commercial and enterprise applications of the last decade. But something changed. Why is it that teenage kids (and younger) can so quickly learn and master very advanced applications such as NBA 2K17, yet companies must budget and plan for days of classroom training for new transportation software, inventory solutions or warehouse applications?

The reality is, as software evolves and as younger generations enter the supply chain talent pool, far too many supply chain software vendors failed to follow suit. One of my favorite studies of all time was conducted by the Sand Hill Group. When asked how to best define success, both software providers and buyers indicated value realization. Seventy percent of those surveyed believed that user adoption was the primary driver of success. Only 1 percent felt that features and functions ruled the day. I think the vast majority of supply chain software users would agree.

While leading vendors in traditional software have the benefit of deep, mature functionality, they are also saddled with applications that likely have hundreds of screens designed a decade ago or longer. While many added slick new skins that appear more modern, few are willing to invest the millions of dollars necessary (and years and risk) to fundamentally change how the application is used. The return on investment (ROI) can be difficult to prove and requires a core belief from senior management to make this kind of bet.

With that in mind, I would submit that companies looking for new supply chain software (or any enterprise software, for that matter) must reconsider how they evaluate software. The traditional requests for proposal (RFPs) and demo scoresheets used by consultants and buyers alike are almost entirely checklists of features and functions. The more, the better! But doesnt feature bloat usually lead to even more confusing user interfaces?

Changing how you evaluate software is not easyboth literally and culturally. It is a natural temptation to add features you may need four years from now just in case. Likewise, how do you objectify ease of use?

To help, Id like to offer five warning signs (and evaluation tips) of old-fashioned software design.

Cluttered screens with far too much information on them stem from good intentions. Software vendors simply want to ensure that any possible data a user might need in the theoretical future is available on the screen. Take a look at one of your most commonly used screens (i.e., a shipment screen). If you find that you dont need half of the data on the screen, you have a problem.

One sure sign of feature bloat is how many clicks it takes to perform a frequently used function. Good, experienced design teams have usability labs to measure this exact metric. During the demonstration, evaluators should pick a couple of important features, such as tendering a load or approving an invoice, and measure click count. I strongly recommend not telling your vendor this in advance as data can be pre-staged and unrealistic shortcuts can be taken to give a false reading.

This may sound silly, but you can tell a lot about an application by its menu structure. How wide and how deep is the menu? If a menu has more than 10 selections on it, it is probably too cumbersome. If it goes two or three layers deep, that is also a worrisome sign. Vendors occasionally talk about positional memory as a design strategy, but that is usually an excuse for feature bloat. The one exception to this is configuration, which by its very nature, is complex. However, good software hides this from everyday users.

What does your vendors training look like? Do they advertise a university? If you need a four-year degree to master your new software (or five days of training just to start your project), then you might have a problem. Good software design should allow you to start exploring and executing within a couple of hourskind of like the NBA 2K17 tutorial.

OK. This last suggestion is a little devious. But, how long does it take for your vendor to prepare for a web-demo overview with data that is similar to yours? If it takes more than a day or two, that should tell you something. If the company needs two to three weeks to prepare for a scripted demo, that should also be factored in to your evaluation. If the people who use the software every day need a lot of time to get ready to show you their best side, what does that mean for a team of people who are going to be new to the system?

Its been a month and I think I am finally ready to take on my son in NBA 2K17. I didnt learn it quite as quickly as he did and Im pretty sure Ill lose by 30, but Im guessing its not the design. Maybe Im just old.
