The cloud-based transportation management software provider Kuebix has created a direct integration with the international freight marketplace SimpliShip, the companies said Tuesday. The integration allows Kuebix users to pull air and ocean freight rates from SimpliShip directly into Kuebixs planning and execution platform. Kuebix will utilize SimpliShips international freight rate application programming interface (API). The integration allows Kuebix to provide procurement capability in international modes to complement its existing capability in domestic modes, and gives SimpliShip access to Kuebix customers that require international rates. SimpliShip Chief Executive Officer Cory Margand called the integration the first step in unlocking the true potential for APIs in international logistics. The days of having to access multiple platforms to manage domestic and international shipments are over. Margand is a former logistics executive with Adidas, and founded SimpliShip to provide a platform to make the procurement of freight forwarding services easier for shippers. The use of APIs to connect logistics and freight transportation systems is steadily growing, especially among the newer breeds of systems providers. APIs are essentially a way for two systems to communicate with one another in a more flexible, real-time, two-way manner, relative to electronic data interchange (EDI). EDI is a more standardized method of conveying information like rates, transit times and invoice information, but that standardization can be perceived as rigidity for some uses. EDI messages are also sent in batches, creating data latency, and EDI integrations can be costly and time-consuming. Kuebix President Dan Clark called the SimpliShip integration a great addition to the Kuebix ecosystem as we continue to expand our global network of providers to maximize visibility and efficiency for domestic and international shippers. Kuebix is a fast-growing TMS provider primarily focused on the small- and medium-sized enterprise segment, but with growing revenue from larger enterprises. The [Kuebix] TMS was built on the Salesforce platform and allows clients to implement the solution very quickly with the core TMS, then seamlessly add premier apps and integrations as needed, Gartner analyst Bart de Munyck wrote about the company in a TMS market study in March. Kuebix focuses on both the SMB and the enterprise market and has over 1,500 customers. Although 90 percent of Kuebix's customers are small (less than $25 million in freight under management), the company is growing on the large enterprise client side. Kuebix offers managed service programs to businesses looking to partially or fully outsource transportation management.

Getting Paid: Why AR Matters in your TMS – Logistics Viewpoints (blog)

Figuring out the right TMS for your business typically boils down to your vendors data structure, which affects every facet of the software. One way to know whether the TMS will work for your needs is to look at its accounts receivable capabilities (AR). This is where the data structure really comes to light.

Whats so important about AR?

Think of an AR record as a sell-side load. While a load is essentially an intermediate point between an order and a carrier freight bill on the buy-side, an AR record is the intermediary between an order and a customer invoice. Both buy-side and sell-side charges are allocated back to the order. An AR record is the primary entity against which sell-side rating occurs for the purpose of invoicing customers.

The flexibility with which a TMS allows you to create and manage AR records drives how fast, easily and accurately you get paid. But the truth is that many TMS AR record parameters wont match up with the realities of your business, so taking a hard look at them will quickly give you an idea of whether youre considering the right TMS.

Precise rating and billing by order, shipment or load

Determine exactly how not just whether the TMS enables you to rate and invoice in multiple ways. For any given load and client, your TMS should be able to create an AR record at the order level, shipment level or load level.

The existence of the sell-side load allows you the flexibility to consolidate multiple clients on a load while still billing each client independently at the load, shipment or order level.

Lets say you have a load originating out of Dallas and it has four different stops:

At Stop #1, you have to bill two different divisions within the same company. At Stop #3, theres an order for a different customer entirely. Some orders will need to be billed separately to different parties, and so require different ARs.

A TMS should allow you to bill several different ways in this situation: If you choose ordered-based invoicing, you will have six AR records (one for each of your six orders associated with the load). If your TMS allows for shipment-based invoicing, you will still receive six ARs because the bill-to location and/or client are different on some of the orders so they will be split into their own AR records. For load-based ARs, you would receive three ARs: One for each combination of client and bill-to location.

Rating and allocation

Once an AR is created, the next step is rating and allocation. AR records can be rated in multiple ways:

Once rated, the AR records charges are allocated back to the order associated with it. The allocation process is used to support both the buy and sell-side rating processes. It determines how the calculated buy/sell charges should be allocated to and from the orders associated with the ARs, and therefore determines a loads profitability and margin. A TMS should give you multiple options for allocations and run them automatically as needed, such as when a load cost changes or order charges change.

By giving you several allocation options including capabilities for determining shared savings for any customer programs a TMS gives you maximum power in determining the real-time profitability of your loads and flexibility in how you invoice. This is critical to managing the logistics of todays transportation industry and taking advantage of more complex (but profitable) distribution methods, including pool distribution.

AR matters

The capabilities of a TMS matter little if you cant bill your customers according to the realities of your business. By examining the AR capabilities of a TMS, you can determine not only what the software is capable of but how it will help you solve your challenges efficiently and profitably.

The Treatment That Finally Lifted My Depression After Everything Else Failed – Reader’s Digest

Courtesy Nathalie DeGravelFour years ago, Nathalie DeGravel, 48, finally recognized something was horribly wrong with her brain. A human resources coordinator at the time, and living in Los Angeles, she knew that the episodes of rage and crying she battled frequently were much worse than the typical emotions everyone experiences. But her trips to a psychiatrist and prescription medications couldnt put a dent in the vicious depression she was suffering. Her despair at finding a solution led her to an unconventional new treatmentwhich ended up saving her life.

Born in Paris, France, DeGravel had always been content with the pleasant life she built in the United States: A husband and two children she enjoyed immensely, a satisfying career, with occasional trips to visit family in Paris. When her symptoms of depression began, they were mild, almost unnoticeable. Over time, however, the mental illness grew in severity to the point she couldnt even recognize herself, or the life she had worked so hard to build.

It started with anxiety a few years back, and I would experience rage as well, says DeGravel. I shouted and hit objects. At one point, I even emptied the trash can on my husbands head. Her feelings eventually caused her to withdraw from those she loved most, creating a sense of confusion and anger that radiated through her family. I would isolate myself and leave the house for the entire day, not saying where I was. I wouldnt respond to the phone when I was actually just in a parking lot, listening to music or sleeping in my car, she recalls. Simple tasks such as showering and taking care of her family became overwhelming. I cried all the time for no reason, DeGravel says. I was lethargic, I would sleep or stay in bed all day long without eating. I progressively became overwhelmed by daily tasks even though I wasnt working and my youngest child is in high school. Cooking, housekeeping, and grocery shopping would provoke panic attacks. Heres what not to say to someone whos depressed.

As DeGravels life began to spiral out of control, her loved ones became tangled in the web of her illness. My husband had to do his own therapy to understand what happened to me and to cope with the changes at home. He was frustrated, angry, and resentful. Our relationship in general was in constant conflict, and we didnt have fun together anymore, she explains. (Dealing with a depressed spouse can be extremely tricky.)

DeGravel found herself focusing solely on doing the unthinkableending her own life. She recalls, I would think all day and night about how I could kill myself so that it looked like an accident: My husband could get the life insurance money, and my kids would not feel guilty, because it wouldnt be their fault. Her career suffered the strain of her illness as well: She ultimately walked away from her job while she struggled to survive each and every day. When I was working I was unable to concentrate, couldnt remember what I read or the instructions I was given. Id miss deadlines, and fall asleep during meetings and at my desk, she said. During her worst moments, she wondered why her life had taken such a tragic turn. The first thing I always asked myself was Why? Why me? I used to be strong, independent, able to control my emotions, and able to know what I wanted, she says. I moved from France to the US and found a job quickly, visited my family regularly, was in good health. I had good friends, I bought a house. I was known for my character: strong, but generous and fair. In short, I was not a weak person, and I accomplished a lot in life. So why me?

Content continues below ad

Desperate to regain control over her life, DeGravel sought out the help of a psychiatrist. But repeated attempts at traditional therapy and medication did nothing to ease her symptoms. DeGravel knew she had to think outside the box. I was online when I saw an advertisement for transcranial magnetic stimulation. I had never heard about it and I was desperate for any solution. I talked to my psychiatrist about it, and he enrolled me in the program at UCLA, she recalls.

Cultura/ShutterstockTranscranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a recently developed therapy in which magnetic pulses are beamed deep into mood centers in the brain; while no one is sure exactly why the treatment works, the increased neural activity over timeTMS is done several times a week for four to six weeksseems to rewire the brain, easing depressive symptoms and thoughts. Ian Cook, MD, director of the UCLA Depression Research and Clinic Program where DeGravel received treatment, told the UCLA News Room, We are actually changing how the brain circuits are arranged, how they talk to each other. The brain is an amazingly changeable organ, and we hope this technology will have use, not just in depression, but for other conditions as well. The development of the new therapy to treat stubborn depression is an encouraging sign for the 30 percent of people whose symptoms are treatment resistant to other therapies. (TMS is just one of several promising advances in depression treatment.)

The FDA-approved treatment requires patients to visit a TMS center. The doctor positions an electromagnetic coil against the patients scalp, and then administers magnetic pulses for 30 to 40 minutes. For the most part, the non-invasive treatment is painless, though some patients experience temporary pain at the site or mild headaches. DeGravels experience with the treatment was positive: After about 5 weeks I noticed the treatment had an impact on my symptoms. I felt almost normal. I had control of my emotions, I was socializing again, I wasnt crying, and I had no suicidal thoughts. Physically, the procedure was relatively easy to tolerate. She recalls, When the set-up is finalized the sessions last only about 40 minutes. Its noisy, but I wear earplugs, and it feels like I have a woodpecker on my head. Some people watch TV during the sessions, but I prefer to check my emails or Facebook. The new therapy has had such a profound impact on her life that DeGravel hopes others suffering from the same debilitating symptoms will consider the treatment. I encourage anyone with depression to give TMS a try. I was in their shoes a few months back, and I only regret one thingnot knowing about it earlier! TMS is an option for patients who, like DeGravel, have failed to find relief with counseling and drug therapy.

Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) Needle Moving 0.00% – Evergreen Caller

Shares ofTargeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) aremoving on volatility today0.00% or 0.00 from the open.TheTSXV listed companysaw a recent bid of 0.05 and66000shares have traded hands in the session.

Investors and traders are most likely gearing up for the next round of company earnings reports. Investors have the ability to follow sell-side analysts who regularly cover certain companies. Investors may be tuning in to see how analysts revise estimates heading into earnings season. After the reports, investors may be interested in how the actual results impact the stock price in the following days or weeks. Companies posting large surprise factors with either a beat or miss could see accelerated stock price volatility in the short-term.

Now letstake a look at how the fundamentals are stacking up for Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V). Fundamental analysis takes into consideration market, industry and stock conditions to help determine if the shares are correctly valued. Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. currently has a yearly EPS of -0.11. This number is derived from the total net income divided by shares outstanding. In other words, EPS reveals how profitable a company is on a share owner basis. When getting into the markets, most investors realize that riskier stocks may have an increased potential for higher returns. If investors decide to take a chance on some of these stocks, they may want to employ some standard techniques to help manage that risk. This may involve creating a diversified stock portfolio. Mixing up the portfolio with stocks from different sectors, market caps, and growth potential, may be the right move. In general, the goal is to maximize returns in accordance with the individuals specific risk profile. It should be obvious that no matter how well rounded the portfolio is, there are always risks in the equity markets. Having a sound plan before investing can help ease the burden of knowing that markets can sometimes do crazy things without any rhyme or reason.

Another key indicator that can help investors determine if a stock might be a quality investment is the Return on Equity or ROE. Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) currently has Return on Equity of -124.73. ROE is a ratio that measures profits generated from the investments received from shareholders.

In other words, the ratio reveals how effective the firm is at turning shareholder investment into company profits. A company with high ROE typically reflects well on management and how well a company is run at a high level. A firm with a lower ROE might encourage potential investors to dig further to see why profits arent being generated from shareholder money.

Another ratio we can look at is the Return on Invested Capital or more commonly referred to as ROIC. Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) has a current ROIC of -108.54. ROIC is calculated by dividing Net Income Dividends by Total Capital Invested.

Similar to ROE, ROIC measures how effectively company management is using invested capital to generate company income. A high ROIC number typically reflects positively on company management while a low number typically reflects the opposite.

Turning to Return on Assets or ROA, Targeted Microwave Solutions Inc. (TMS.V) has a current ROA of -95.05. This is a profitability ratio that measures net income generated from total company assets during a given period. This ratio reveals how quick a company can turn its assets into profits. In other words, the ratio provides insight into the profitability of a firms assets. The ratio is calculated by dividing total net income by the average total assets.

A higher ROA compared to peers in the same industry, would suggest that company management is able to effectively generate profits from their assets. Similar to the other ratios, a lower number might raise red flags about managements ability when compared to other companies in a similar sector.

Investors might be looking for a way to boost profits as we move deeper into the second half of the year. Finding that next big winner may take a lot of research and number crunching with so many stocks trading around all-time highs. Finding that gem that everyone else missed can be an exhilarating feeling. On the other side of the coin, nobody wants to be stuck with that loser that drags down the portfolio. Knowing when to cut losses can play a significant role in longer-term portfolio stability. Investors may get too attached to a specific stock, and let emotions get involved in the decision making process. Keeping emotions out of stock picking may be tough, but it may be a smart play.

Taking a deeper look into the technical levels ofEdap Tms SA (EDAP), we can see thatthe Williams Percent Range or 14 day Williams %R currently sits at -65.79. The Williams %R oscillates in a range from 0 to -100. A reading between 0 and -20 would point to an overbought situation. A reading from -80 to -100 would signal an oversold situation. The Williams %R was developed by Larry Williams. This is a momentum indicator that is the inverse of the Fast Stochastic Oscillator.

Edap Tms SA (EDAP) currently has a 14-day Commodity Channel Index (CCI) of -24.56. Active investors may choose to use this technical indicator as a stock evaluation tool. Used as a coincident indicator, the CCI reading above +100 would reflect strong price action which may signal an uptrend. On the flip side, a reading below -100 may signal a downtrend reflecting weak price action. Using the CCI as a leading indicator, technical analysts may use a +100 reading as an overbought signal and a -100 reading as an oversold indicator, suggesting a trend reversal.

The RSI, or Relative Strength Index, is a widely used technical momentum indicator that compares price movement over time. The RSI was created by J. Welles Wilder who was striving to measure whether or not a stock was overbought or oversold. The RSI may be useful for spotting abnormal price activity and volatility. The RSI oscillates on a scale from 0 to 100. The normal reading of a stock will fall in the range of 30 to 70. A reading over 70 would indicate that the stock is overbought, and possibly overvalued. A reading under 30 may indicate that the stock is oversold, and possibly undervalued. After a recent check, Edap Tms SAs 14-day RSI is currently at 51.81, the 7-day stands at 50.53, and the 3-day is sitting at 70.92.

Currently, the 14-day ADX for Edap Tms SA (EDAP) is sitting at 21.82. Generally speaking, an ADX value from 0-25 would indicate an absent or weak trend. A value of 25-50 would support a strong trend. A value of 50-75 would identify a very strong trend, and a value of 75-100 would lead to an extremely strong trend. ADX is used to gauge trend strength but not trend direction. Traders often add the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI) to identify the direction of a trend.

TMS Writes Fanfic: Steves on a Plane – The Mary Sue

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to fandom. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of fans fears and the summit of their knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the TMS Slack Zone.

From time to time, we here at The Mary Sue have Slack conversations that spin off wildly into Are We Just Writing Fanfic Now territory. Snatching the copy of Destinations from the seat back pocket in front of him, Steve Rogers let out a heavy, tired sigh. They can put a man on the moon, he muttered to himself. But they cant figure out how to make more space in an overhead compartment.

A voice came from the slow-moving, cowherd-like procession of passengers in the center aisle. You can say that again, pal. It was attached to a smiling face and an extended hand. Names Steve. Steve Trevor. Steve couldnt help but notice his immaculately sparkling teeth and well-coiffed hair that seemed to defy gravity. He met Steves hand with his own, and somehow the universe did not fold in on itself.

Funny. My names Steve, too. Rogers. Steve Steve Rogers.

Someone else in the line groaned, rolling their eyes so hard that Rogers thought theyd fall out and roll across the floor. Oh, comeon.

Whoops, said Trevor, with much chagrin and a wave to the eye-rolling passenger. Let me just He quickly shoved his bag up in the impossibly-packed overhead compartment and flopped into the seat next to Rogers. Looks like someone in ticketing wanted to play a little joke, huh?

Yeah, something like that.Rogers eyed Trevor, giving him a once over. He wasnt sure whyit was just something he did since he left his shield behind with Tony. But he couldnt help himself. His kindness won out. Something told him he could trust this man, Steve or not. Believe you me, Id be laughing if it wasnt so darn warm and uncomfortable in these jets.

Trevor smirked, arching an eyebrow. You call this a jet, pal? He reached up to turn on the air conditioner knob. Ive flown jets, and this thing? This things a big bus. Greyhound of the skies, we call em.

Oh, are you military? Rogers asked. It was only now he noticed the small tattoo of what may have been wings peeking out from under Trevors bomber jacket. Trevor followed Rogers gaze and pulled his sleeve up the rest of the way, showing off a tattoo of what Rogers instantly recognized as a World War I-era fighter.

Something like that. was Trevors reply. How about you?

Rogers instantly tensed up and turned away. Ex.

Of course Trevor noticed. There was no way he couldnt notice Rogers sudden change in body language and how he seemed to did he just flex? Uh huh. What branch? Or, uh what ex-branch?

Rogers just pursed his lips and looked down at his shoes. Army.

At that, Trevor slapped Rogers on the shoulder. No kiddin, huh? Thats swell. I was well, I wasAir Force, myself. Rogers nodded. Neat.

Sensing the conversation was going south, Trevor began to fidget just a bit. Well ah, okay then. So why are you headed to Trevor fished in his jacket pocket for his boarding pass. Canada? He furrowed his brow. Wait, were going toCanada? He started looking around the cabin.

You didnt know this plane was going to Canada? Rogers asked. How does someone get on a plane and not know where its going?

I mean, its not likeI booked the damn flight. Hed have to have a conversation with Diana about all this cloak and dagger and misdirection stuff. Hes the spy, after all, and theyre in peacetime, why shouldnt he be the one who decides how to ah, heck with it.

With a strong sense of finality, the cabin door sealed itself shut. Rogers picked up Trevors seatbelt and offered it to him. Better buckle in, pal, cause its going to be a long flight to the Great White North.

Trevor could only pout as he buckled himself in.

As the plane backed away from the gate for taxi and takeoff, Rogers nudged Trevor. Oh, man, Ilove these little safety videos they show us. He brightened up considerably, and it rubbed off a little on Trevors now-soured demeanor. Rogers began to sing along. I got some safety tips that you gotta know

Trevor was determined to stay under his little storm cloud. But Rogers continued on undeterred. Heck, he started dancing in his seat, much to the dismay of the poor passenger sitting behind him. and trust me, its something that you wanna hear.

Squinting just a bit, Trevor relented. So zip your lips and enjoy the show before we move into the stratosphere

Together, they sang.

So tonight, get ready to fly cuz were gonna live it on up in the sky Virgin America knows all the places you wanna be Fly away with me, fly away with me, yeah!

Jazz hands. Bouncing around. The poor sucker who thought they were getting a better deal out of an aisle seat next to the pair immediately began to regret their seat choice. She reached up to try to activate the Call Attendant button, but Trevor grabbed her hand and began to mock-swing dance with her.She even began dancing just a bit as Trevor moved back to sing the rest of the song with Rogers.

His mood considerably lightened, Trevor leaned back in his seat. Maybe this flight wont feel so long after all.

20,000 feet up in the air.

Rogers tapped Trevor on the shoulder. Trevor, dont you find it strange that were asked to put on our own masks before helping children? Ive always thought it was a little odd.

Trevor grinned. You havent been in many plane crashes, have you?

Rogers laughed. Buddy let me tell you

36,000 feet up in the air. One hour into the flight.

They never give you enough nuts in these snack packs. Rogers stuffed the empty bag into the seat back pocket in front of him.

Trevor chuckled to himself. No kidding, huh? Not enough nuts. Never enough nuts.

Back in my day They pause, realizing that they both just said the same thing. Trevor winks and fires some fingerguns at Rogers.

36,000 feet up in the air. Beginning landing approach.

Tell me, Rogers, have you ever seen Fight Club?

Later.

The pair laughed and joked all the way down the aisle and up the jet bridge. Well, Trevor said with a sigh. Thanks for the great ride, Rogers. He held out his hand, again flashing Rogers with that winning smile, the same smile he gave him back when this whole journey just began. It was only a few hours of Rogers life, a few hours spent out of his admittedly already abnormally long lifespan. But despite the relatively short amount of time they spent together, Rogers found himself wishing what he wished so long ago with Peggythat he had just a little bit more time.

At that, Steve Rogers, Captain America, the eternal boy scout, did something he never thought hed do. He stole something from Trevor: a kiss. A bare grazing of lips on a stubbled cheek, under widened, surprised eyes.

Rogers turned beet red, sure that he looked just like the Red Skull in that moment. He nodded, muttered a bye and sprinted away.

Trevor stood at the gate, his hand still extended as if for a handshake. A slip of paper carrying Rogers number rests carefully in his palm. He looked down at it, as one might look at a freshly-born baby chick.

Dianas never going to believeany of this.

I Know Your Next Move: Game Reveals How the Brain Strategizes – Live Science

Anyone who has played a competitive game knows their own actions are affected by their opponent's moves. A baseball pitcher, for instance, might start throwing curveballs if he thinks the batter is ready for a fastball. Now, researchers in Switzerland have identified the part of the brain that's involved in those calculations the place where our "theory of mind" gets worked out.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a simple strategy game, the scientists found that an area called the right temporoparietal junction, or rTPJ, (located toward the back and side of the head, behind the right ear) becomes active when people try to figure out another person's beliefs and possible actions. The rTPJ connects two regions of the brain: one area that allows us to imagine other people's mental states (the theory of mind), and another that governs our sense of value, or how important that information is.

The finding could help researchers "probe deeper into disorders where the person has deficits in theory of mind," Christopher Hill, a doctoral student at the University of Zurich and the lead author of the study, told Live Science. Some people on the autism spectrum have this kind of problem, he said. [10 Things You Didn't Know About the Brain]

The rTPJ helps us update our own thoughts with information about what another person may be thinking in response to our actions, Hill told Live Science. For example, when person A wants to respond to something person B has done, it first estimates what person B will do in response to that.

The team tested the idea using a simple psychology strategy game called "Work/Shirk," which has two players, a manager and an employee.

The person playing the employee must decide whether to do their work, and the manager must decide whether to inspect the employee's work. If the manager decides not to inspect the work but the employee works anyway, the manager gets 100 points and the employee gets zero. But if the manager does not inspect it and the employee shirked their work (did not complete it), the employee gets 50 points (since they escaped notice) and the manager gets zero. If the manager decides to look in on the worker and the employee is working, that's 50 points for the employee and zero for the manager. If the manager looks in and catches the employee shirking, the manager gets 25 points while the employee gets zero.

Over several iterations, players can maximize their points if they correctly guess what their opponent is doing. A manager who decides not to inspect because they know the employee is working has guessed right. Similarly, employees would try to be working when inspected and shirking when not, and managers would try to catch the employees not working.

In the experiment, Hill and his colleagues used fMRI imaging scans and a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). They divided the 120 study participants into two groups, and the participants worked in pairs. For one group, the researchers used TMS while they scanned the brains of the players in the "employee" role. TMS involves inducing a current in a part of the brain with an electromagnet. That current can temporarily disrupt the functioning of specific brain regions. For the control group, the researchers scanned the participants' brains with an fMRI machine but did not use TMS.

It turned out that the group that received the TMS had more difficulty anticipating their opponent's moves, suggesting that the rTPJ is important in the process of that anticipation. [5 Interesting Facts about Human Cooperation]

Further, the fMRI scans revealed that the rTPJ became active as people played the game and started calculating how they could beat their opponent. The researchers saw increased activity of the brain as people tried to figure out what the other person was thinking.

"We had these neural effects if we looked for a correlation between the magnitude of disruption and how much weight people gave," to their thoughts about what other people believe, Hill said. The more that communication occurring between the rTPJ and the areas of the brain that govern how much we value something was disrupted, the less people tried to use their beliefs about opponents to win.

Both Hill and Christian Ruff, a professor of neuroeconomics at the University of Zurich who supervised the study, acknowledged that the data is a bit "noisy." For example, some people are very good at strategy games such as this one (rock-paper-scissors is another example), and some people are not, so the researchers tried to make sure the participants they chose were of roughly similar ability. In the future, the researchers want to do a more extensive study with more people, to confirm the findings.

"One thing that's interesting is that during strategic interactions, people play at different levels of complexity, and people who play at more complex levels beat those who play at lower levels," Ruff said. "The question is, can you teach this? Can you learn it?"

The study is published in the July 10 issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience.

AscendTMS launches commission system for TMS Software – Fleet Owner

InMotion Global, Inc. announced that AscendTMS has released a new commission and branch split management system available for TMS software.

The new module is provided as an included feature of the Premium AscendTMS subscription. It allows carriers and freight brokers to setup and manage a variety of sales commission and branch split programs, along with full commission overrides on a load-by-load basis, the company noted.

Tim Higham, president and CEO of InMotion Global, Inc. said, Commissions and sales incentives are the life-blood of all successful carriers and freight brokers. So, we designed our new commissions system to let the sales team monitor their own successes in real-time. Any commissioned sales representative can see exactly what has been paid, what is owed, and what their future commissions are expected to be. Better still, sales managers dont need to be asked to run commission reports, the sales reps can do it themselves any time they wish.

Higham continued, Whether you have one sales person or one thousand, this new AscendTMS feature gives you a happier and more productive sales force, which translates into more revenue and more profit. Thats why AscendTMS is the fastest-growing TMS in the world today. Never again will sales reps question their commissions or their branch split. AscendTMS does everything and its perfectly accurate every single time.

Rewiring the brain to treat depression – WRCB-TV

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

Each year American's spend billions on antidepressants, but studies show they can be ineffective in up to 40 percent of all patients. Bob Holmes was one of them.

Bob Holmes says "They tried to adjust my medication, but the medication had side effects that weren't desirable."

Holmes is among the 16-million people in the U.S. who suffer major depressive episodes each year. Thatnumberincreased 18-percent over the last decade, which is why some doctors are taking a different approach.

Doctors are beaming magnetic pulses deep inside patients' brains to change the way depression symptoms are perceived.

Dr. Andrew Leuchter, UCLA Health says, "We are used to thinking of the brain as a chemical organ, but, it's also an electrical organ."

Dr. Ian Cook, UCLA Medical says, "It's called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or T-M-S. It's currently F-D-A approved only to treat depression, but doctors say it may prove helpful in a wide range of conditions, by rewiring a network of signals in the brain."

Doctors tell us that T-M-S can feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but many patients quickly get used to it and report substantial relief from their symptoms of depression within a few weeks.

Dr. Leuchter says, "What TMS is doing is changing how thenetwork functions, really rebooting the network to improve symptoms of mood, anxiety, and chronic pain."

Which may be why many patients treated for depression also say it helps relieve their pain. Raising provocative questions about whether T-M-S could one day become a viable alternative to opioids.

Dr. Ian Cook says, "This is really a transformative kind of therapy, but in medicine there's always the wish to do better, to help more people than what we do now."

But for now, it's made a dramatic difference in Bob's depression.

Bob Holmes says, "It provided that kind of jolt to get my brain to start work again, normally."

Lanesborough-Williamstown Schools Hire Business Management Consultant – iBerkshires.com

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. After three attempts to hire a business manager for the Williamstown-Lanesborough Tri-District, the school committees this week agreed to hire a consulting firm to handle the schools finances on an interim basis.

On Tuesday, the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee joined its counterparts from Superintendency Union 71 in unanimously accepting the recommendation of Interim Superintendent Kimberley Grady to sign a one-year contract with The Management Solution (TMS) out of Auburn.

At the time, school officials took solace that the groundwork for the fiscal year 2018 budgets had been laid, and, in fact, all three budgets for Lanesborough Elementary, Williamstown Elementary and Mount Greylock passed muster with their respective town halls and town meeting voters in Lanesborough and Williamstown.

Nonetheless, Grady seemed relieved on Wednesday when she updated the Williamstown Elementary School Committee about the current staffing levels at the Tri-District office.

We have an interim director of pupil personnel services also starting July 5 and an HR specialist starting July 5, Grady said. And we have a district office manager who will continue his role.

"I will be fully staffed on July 5. Thats a really good feeling. Thank you all for the support youve supplied in the last several months. Im looking forward to rolling out the new team and hitting the ground running over the summer months."

This is the second time the Tri-District has contracted with TMS.

TMS last tenure in the district was remembered as less than smooth by some members of the hiring committees, but Grady said that the firm had undergone some restructuring and came recommended by districts that recently have used their services.

The companys website lists 28 clients, including Mount Greylock, the overwhelming majority in Massachusetts.

TMS, founded in 2006, has a mission statement that reads: Rethinking the process for managing school district operations. This includes business management, planning, professional development, evaluation of staff, contract negotiation, procurement, program review, and use of data. TMS continues to push forward and break new ground.

The Management Solution was the only firm to respond to the request for proposals the Tri-District issued after several tries to hire either a permanent or interim business manager.

Prior to recommending the Auburn firm, Grady sought feedback from the Massachusetts Association of School Business Officials and the Massachusetts Association of School Committees. As part of the contract, the firm promised to have someone on site three days a week during the term of the arrangement: July 1 to June 30, 2018.

The school committee members were satisfied that TMS is the best option for the three school districts.

Since Im raising specific concerns, Id like to say Im happy to bring them on board, said Mount Greylock School Committee member Carolyn Greene, who was on the committee for the last go-around with TMS. I think we have a good shot at working well with them. Theyre much more aware of us. Were more aware of them. And we need a business firm.

I dont think its a compromise. Its a fair option.

Lanesborough Elementary School Committee Chairwoman Regina DiLego, who also served the last time the Tri-District employed TMS, agreed.

One of the problems was they were new and didnt anticipate the size and scope of what they had to do, she said.

The RFP made clear the expectations of the business manager, including the use of three different accounting software programs, answering to three different school committees, attending night meetings in the two towns and managing bills and compensation from the state related to the ongoing building project at Mount Greylock.

I think having them for three days will be better than two days, DiLego said. And, in all fairness, I have to say that, in my opinion, the issue wasnt totally with TMS. There were internal issues at the time that complicated a successful venture with them, and I dont see them being issues again.

The Tri-Districts contract with TMS is for $97,000 for one year. The full-time business manager position had been budgeted for $94,000 in the FY18 budget; all three school districts pay a share of the central administration costs proportionally based on enrollment.

The Guardian view on Test Match Special: 60 years of tacit pleasure – The Guardian

Sound of the summer: Test Match Specials Michael Vaughan and Jonathan Agnew. Photograph: Gareth Copley/Getty Images

It is 19 years since BBC television ceased broadcasting live Test cricket and 12 since Channel 4 drew stumps on its own free-to-air coverage. Since then, Sky has had the monopoly of rights to what was once the national summer game. This will change a bit in 2020, when the BBC will start showing highlights, and some live T20 games, with Sky retaining the bulk of the rights.

Yet for many, free-to-air cricket coverage is now synonymous with radios Test Match Special. On Thursday, as Test cricket resumes for the first time in this English summer, TMS marks its 60th year of ball-by-ball radio commentaries. This deserves salute from the paper of John Arlott, even while recognising that TMS is a Marmite taste that some adore and others dislike.

Many are devoted to TMSs gentle rhythms in spite of the male public school tone that still lingers. Others want it to converse better with todays Britain. The tension between tradition and innovation will always shape responses to TMS and cricket itself.

In a Wisden survey of TMSs role in the game, Matthew Engel this year highlighted an important truth. While televised sports relentless underlying dogma, especially in Skys treatment, is always that this is thrilling and it really matters, he wrote, radios values are subtler. On radio, there is a tacit pact with the listener, who will be registering the cricket as an agreeable extra in their own daily routine. Exactly so. Just as there is more to life than politics, so there is also more to life than cricket. But its good to welcome TMS back for the summer.

Stevie Ryan chronicled her extensive depression treatments, including TMS, on her mental health podcast – Starcasm.net

Saturday night comedian and pop culture commentator Stevie Ryan lost a long and hard fought battle with depression. Stevie has been very open and public about her quest for depression treatment, peppering in tweets about 3-hour-long talk therapy sessions and Instagram posts about transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatments (above) along with her scathing humor about pop culture and reality stars like the Teen Mom cast and the Kardashians.

Three months ago Stevie Ryan launched a mental health podcast called Mentally Ch(ill) with fellow comedian Kristen Carney. The episodes, which are embedded below, involve frank and humorous about all aspects of living with depression and seeking treatment.

In podcast posted on May 23, 2017, Ryan talks about embarking a month-long set of every day TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) treatments. As pictured above, the treatments involve her sitting there with a giant magnet on her brain. According to the Mayo Clinic website, TMS is often used when most other depression treatments have been ineffective.

The magnet is supposed to deliver a pulse that stimulates nerve cells in parts of the brain that regulate mood. I just have to sit there for a half-hour while this magnet just pounds on my head, Ryan explained on the podcast. It will move your eyebrows a little.

She went on to say that they fitted her for her personal device by testing to see which part of the brain they could stimulate that would make your fingers and hands start twitching. They told her they could also do that to her legs. Shed only had one real treatment before she already started to see a difference in her mood in the morning. Usually, Ryan said she cried every single morning when she woke up, but the day after her first TMS session, she didnt feel the need to cry. I dont know what it is, Im just so sad inside, she said about why she regularly cried.

In her last podcast episode, which was uploaded two days before her death, Ryan was severely grieving the death of her beloved grandfather. The episode was recorded just a few hours after her grandfather died. Ive just kind of watched him wither away in the past two weeks and its really, really sad to watch someone who youve grown up your entire life and who you see as the manliest man ever just slowly deteriorate. And, its actually the hardest thing that Ive ever dealt with in my entire life, Ryan said through tears. It just sucks and I will miss him forever. This is just a part of life, but I am just worried that this is gonna send me into a deeper depression. Or maybe it will take me out of my depression a little bit to see that life is short and that we just dont have as much time as we think we do with people that we love or care about.

Co-host Kristen Carney said that they had just recorded a very candid episode about suicide, which they couldnt put out because of audio quality issues. She expressed an interest in rerecording the episode, but wondered if the death of Ryans grandfather had changed her views about suicide.

Ryan expressed confusion over how well her mother was handling the death of the grandfather compared to her. Carney recommended that she ask her doctors at her next TMS treatment to possibly get her on some sort of depression medication to stave off a further spiral. Stevie expressed concern about asking for medication because she says on the last visit they wanted to prescribe her Lithium, which she wanted to stay away from because of the side effects like hair loss and weight gain. Ryan had previously been on Prozac.

Carney also suggested that since Ryan was going through the grieving process, she should avoid isolating herself. Ryan replied that for the first time in a while, she did not feel like isolating herself.

Stevies story is a heartbreaking example of some of the painful realities of dealing with mental health disorders like severe depression, especially during very fragile times in our lives. People are not usually open to talking about their feelings or talking openly like like this, Ryan said in the podcasts first episode. The honesty and gallows humor in the podcast is much like comedian Paul Gilmartins Mental Illness Happy Hour, which has been running since 2011.

Another common theme in these two podcasts is the wisdom that professional success and fame is not the answer to happiness or depression relief. Gilmartin earned a good living on the TBS show Dinner and Movie, while Ryan found a lot of success with YouTube which led to her own VH1 sketch comedy show. When I was doing well in life, I was so lonely and depressed, she said of her time on television.
