TMS Therapy Center of Tulsa – Cutting Edge Depression …

Dr. Rao has over 20 years of experience treating major depressive disorder. The majority of his patients are people who have had depression for many years, if not for their whole life. Their depression has been recurrent, meaning that it keeps coming back despite treatment; or chronic, meaning that theyve experienced some level of depression, even low-grade baseline depression, that has never lifted; or they are people who say theyve been depressed since their teenage years. The traditional treatment for depression has been psychotherapy, the most effective of which is cognitive behavioral therapy. There are some patients who have great results with this treatment, but not everybody. The second type of treatment for depression is antidepressant medication. Similarly, many patients have great success with this type of treatment but we know from experience that about 50-60% have either an inadequate response or no response at all.

Dr. Rao has expertise in treating recurrent or chronic depression which has not responded to these ordinary treatments. Using new protocols for treating depression with antidepressants and TMS, our patients have a greater-than 60% rate of recovery, meaning full remission of their depressive symptoms. In addition, another 20-30% improve from severe or very severe levels of depression to the mild range with only residual symptoms remaining.

Dr. Rao offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment of clinical depression. Evaluations include complete psychiatric, medical and neurologic histories; medical and neurological examination; and state-of-the-art laboratory testing including genetic testing. Genetic testing can indicate why a patient has not responded to an antidepressant and can suggest what other types of antidepressants the patient might respond to.

TMS is the newest modality available to combat clinical depression. FDA guidelines indicate that TMS therapy is indicated for depressed patients who have undergone a course of psychotherapy and/or a course of 1 or more antidepressants that failed to eliminate the depressive episode. TMS is not a treatment of last resort, but rather a mainstream treatment that can be used routinely along with psychotherapy and medication.

More importantly, TMS has become an important or essential component of treatment of recurrent or chronic depression. Frequently patients who have had only a partial response to antidepressants achieve significant improvement, if not recovery, from depression.

The best candidate for TMS is a patient with clinical depression that has not had a satisfactory response to antidepressants; and/or has not improved with psychotherapy; and/or has experienced intolerable side effects.Mission Statement. The purpose of this Center and its sister practice is to provide outstanding psychiatric care based on the most recent advances in the field, including advances in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and neuroscience.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation – About – Mayo Clinic

Overview

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS is typically used when other depression treatments haven't been effective.

During a TMS session, an electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp near your forehead. The electromagnet painlessly delivers a magnetic pulse that stimulates nerve cells in the region of your brain involved in mood control and depression. And it may activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity in people with depression.

Though the biology of why rTMS works isn't completely understood, the stimulation appears to affect how this part of the brain is working, which in turn seems to ease depression symptoms and improve mood.

Treatment for depression involves delivering repetitive magnetic pulses, so it's called repetitive TMS or rTMS.

Mayo Clinic's approach

Depression is a treatable condition, but for some people, standard treatments aren't effective. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is typically used when standard treatments such as medications and talk therapy (psychotherapy) don't work.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive form of brain stimulation used for depression. Unlike vagus nerve stimulation or deep brain stimulation, rTMS does not require surgery or implantation of electrodes. And, unlike electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), rTMS doesn't cause seizures or require sedation with anesthesia.

Generally, rTMS is considered safe and well-tolerated. However, it can cause some side effects.

Side effects are generally mild to moderate and improve shortly after an individual session and decrease over time with additional sessions. They may include:

Serious side effects are rare. They may include:

More study is needed to determine whether rTMS may have any long-term side effects.

Before having repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), you may need a:

Tell your doctor or mental health provider if:

Repetitive TMS isn't invasive, doesn't require anesthesia and can be performed in a doctor's office. You don't need to arrange for someone to drive you home after treatment unless, for the first treatment, you prefer a driver until you get a sense of how you'll feel afterward.

Before considering treatment, check with your health insurance company to see whether rTMS is covered. Your policy may not cover it.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is usually done on an outpatient basis in a doctor's office or clinic. It requires a series of treatment sessions to be effective. Generally, sessions are carried out daily, five times a week for four to six weeks.

Before treatment begins, your doctor will need to identify the best place to put the magnets on your head and the best dose of magnetic energy for you. Your first appointment typically lasts about 60 minutes.

Most likely, during your first appointment:

Once the coil placement and dose are identified, you're ready to begin. Here's what to expect during each treatment:

You can return to your normal daily activities after your treatment. Typically, between treatments, you can expect to work and drive.

There are different ways to perform the procedure. Techniques may change as experts learn more about the most effective ways to perform treatments.

If repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) works for you, your depression symptoms may improve or go away completely. Symptom relief may take a few weeks of treatment.

Repetitive TMS may be less likely to work if:

The effectiveness of rTMS may improve as researchers learn more about techniques, the number of stimulations required and the best sites on the brain to stimulate.

It's not yet known if maintenance rTMS sessions will benefit your depression. This involves continuing treatment when you are symptom-free with the hope that it will prevent the return of symptoms. Most insurance companies don't cover maintenance rTMS.

However, if your depression improves with rTMS, and then later you have another episode of symptoms, your rTMS treatment can be repeated. This is called re-induction. Some insurance companies will cover re-induction.

If your symptoms improve with rTMS, discuss ongoing or maintenance treatment options for your depression with your doctor.

Landmark TMS Provider – Achieve TMS – Opening in Claremont, CA – PR Newswire (press release)

CLAREMONT, Calif., Aug. 23, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --Achieve TMS, the largest and most experienced provider of deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) for the treatment of depression, will open a state-of-the-art center in Claremont, CA on September 1. This new center will enable local residents and students to benefit from the powerful and highly effective impact of dTMS technology, which is approved by the FDA and covered by every major health insurance company in the U.S.

"With 1 in 6 Americans suffering fromdepressionthere is a huge need for treatments that are proven to make a difference in the battle against this debilitating disease," said Manish Sheth, MD, PhD. "Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is known to be an effective tool in the battle. Patients and their families are looking for an effective way to move away from depression into a place where lives are productive, balanced, healthy and well integrated. TMSis a vital tool that helps facilitate healing. We look forward to partnering with psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists in the Claremont area to expand access to this treatment option."

Deep TMS works by administering magnetic pulses through an H-coil on the scalp that is targeted to the mood center of the brain. It is safe, non-invasive and highly effective for those who are treatment resistant and/or have experienced no relief from medication.

In more than 60 clinical studies globally, dTMS has consistently demonstrated statistically significant response and remission rates. The therapy is well tolerated by patients, causing no adverse effects. Treatment sessions are prescribed 5 days per week for 4-6 weeks, with each session lasting 20 minutes. There is no sedation involved, and no down time.

EDAP TMS Reports Record Second Quarter and First Half 2017 Results – GlobeNewswire (press release)

August 23, 2017 16:01 ET | Source: EDAP TMS SA

EDAP-TMS Reports Record Second Quarter and First Half 2017 Results

LYON, France, August 23, 2017 -- EDAP TMS SA (Nasdaq: EDAP), the global leader in therapeutic ultrasound, announced today financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2017, and provided an update on strategic and operational accomplishments.

"We are incredibly pleased to announce record second quarter revenue of 9.3 million", said Marc Oczachowski, EDAP's Chief Executive Officer. "Additionally, the 25% growth in HIFU revenues compared to the first quarter of 2017 shows a significant return from our increased sales and marketing efforts. We also submitted our 510(k) filing to the FDA for our novel Ablatherm Fusion device recently, and are working to file a new 510(k) application with the FDA for the Focal One device in the U.S. The addition of these HIFU devices to our U.S. marketing efforts, coupled with the active C-Code, should serve to help our customers service the widest possible range of patients."

Second Quarter 2017 Results

Total revenue for the second quarter 2017 was EUR 9.3 million (USD 10.4 million), compared to EUR 8.2 million (USD 9.2 million) for the second quarter of 2016, a 13.7% increase and the highest second quarter revenue in EDAP's history.

For the three months ended June 30, 2017, total revenue for the Lithotripsy division was EUR 6.4 million (USD 7.2 million), a 33.9% increase compared to EUR 4.8 million (USD 5.4 million) during the year-ago period. During the second quarter of 2017, EDAP sold 7 lithotripsy devices compared to 6 lithotripsy devices sold during the second quarter of 2016.

Total revenue in the HIFU business for the second quarter was EUR 2.9 million (USD 3.2 million) compared to EUR 3.4 million (USD 3.8 million) for the second quarter of 2016. During the second quarter of 2017, EDAP sold 1 Focal One and 2 Ablatherm HIFU devices compared to 1 Focal One and 3 Ablatherm devices during the second quarter of 2016.

Gross profit for the second quarter 2017 was EUR 4.0 million (USD 4.5 million), compared to EUR 3.5 million (USD 3.9 million) for the year-ago period. Gross profit margin on net sales expanded to 43.2% in the second quarter of 2017, compared to 42.2% in the prior year period, primarily due to increase in revenues.

Operating expenses for the second quarter of 2017 totaled EUR 4.4 million (USD 5.0 million) for the second quarter of 2017, compared to EUR 3.8 million (USD 4.3 million) for the same period in 2016. The increase reflects increased sales and marketing efforts associated with the expansion of the HIFU and UDS businesses.

Operating loss for the second quarter of 2017 was EUR 0.4 million (USD 0.5 million), compared to an operating loss of EUR 0.3 million (USD 0.4 million) in the second quarter of 2016.

Net loss for the second quarter of 2017 was EUR 1.7 million (USD 2.0 million), or loss of EUR 0.06 per diluted share, as compared to net income of EUR 2.5 million (USD 2.8 million), or earnings of EUR 0.09 per diluted share in the year-ago period. Net loss during the second quarter of 2017 included a non-cash interest expense of EUR 0.6 million (USD $0.6 million) to adjust the accounting fair value of the outstanding warrants.

First Six Months 2017 Results

Total revenue for the first half of 2017 was EUR 18.0 million (USD 19.7 million) - a new record level for the period, up 6.3% compared to EUR 16.9 million (USD 18.8 million) for the first half of 2016. For the six months ended June 30, 2017, total revenue for the Lithotripsy division was EUR 12.8 million (USD 14.0 million), an increase of 24.6% when compared to EUR 10.2 million (USD 11.4 million), during the year ago period. This increase was driven by growth in both the distribution business and lithotripsy device sales.

Total revenue in the HIFU division for the first six months 2017 was EUR 5.2 million (USD 5.7 million) compared to EUR 6.7 million (USD 7.4 million) for the six months ended June 30, 2016. This decrease was primarily due to slow U.S. sales of HIFU devices during the first half of the year, tempered by an increase in HIFU treatment driven revenues.

Gross profit for the first half of 2017 was EUR 7.6 million (USD 8.3 million) and gross profit margin was 42.1%, compared to 45.8% in the year ago period. The contraction in gross profit margin was primarily due to an unfavorable mix of HIFU and UDS segment revenues.

The Company recorded an operating loss for the first half of 2017 of EUR 0.8 million (USD 0.9 million), compared with an operating profit of EUR 0.4 million (USD 0.4 million) in the first six months of 2016.

Net loss for the first half of 2017 was EUR 0.1 million (USD 0.1 million), or EUR 0.00 per diluted share, as compared to a net income of EUR 3.9 million (USD 4.3 million), or EUR 0.14 per diluted share, in the first half of 2016. Net income for the first six months of 2017 included non-cash interest income of EUR 1.4 million (USD 1.5 million) to adjust the accounting fair value of the outstanding warrants

What is the Schaff Indicator Suggesting For Edap Tms SA (EDAP)? – Morgan Research

Edap Tms SA (EDAP) shares have seen their Schaff Trend Cycle gradually downtrendthis week over the past fewsessions. While this indicates negativeprice momentum, it also suggests that if the reading moves into oversold territory (STC of 30), thenthe liklihood of a reversal greatly increases. Investors will be watching very closely over the next few days to see if the trend contiunes or reverses.

The Schaff Trend Cycle (STC) indicator combines the common indicators of MACD & Stochastic. The benefit of the Schaff Trend Cycle is that it is meant to be quicker than the standard macd and stochastic signals. The indicator uses similar methods to a MACD i.e uses exponetial moving averages but applies a cycle factor to them. Then the price is smoothed using a mofidied Wilders smoothing algorithm. The Schaff Trend Cycle indicator fluctuates between 0 and 100. Readings below 20 are considered oversold while readings above 80 are considered overbought. The STCindicator fluctuates between 0 and 100. Readings below 20 are considered oversold while readings above 80 are considered overbought.

Active investors are typically interested in the factors that drive stock price movements. Buying an individual stock means that you own a piece of the company. The hope is that the company does very well and becomes highly profitable. A profitable company may decide to do various things with the profits. They may reinvest profits back into the business, or they may choose to pay shareholders dividends from those earnings. Sometimes stocks may eventually become undervalued or overvalued. Spotting these trends may lead to further examination or the underlying fundamentals of the company. A company that continues to disappoint on the earnings front may have some issues that need to be addressed. It is highly important to make sure all the research is done on a stock, especially if the investor is heavily weighted on the name. Sometimes earnings reports may be good, but the stock price does not reflect that. Having a good understanding of the entire picture may help investors better travel the winding stock market road.

Checking on some other popular technical levels, Edap Tms SA (EDAP) has a 14-day Commodity Channel Index (CCI) of -17.91. The CCI technical indicator can be employed to help figure out if a stock is entering overbought or oversold territory. CCI may also be used to help discover divergences that may signal reversal moves. A CCI closer to +100 may provide an overbought signal, and a CCI near -100 may provide an oversold signal.

Tracking other technical indicators, the 14-day RSI is presently standing at 37.05, the 7-day sits at 37.85, and the 3-day is resting at 41.71 for Edap Tms SA (EDAP). The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a highly popular technical indicator. The RSI is computed base on the speed and direction of a stocks price movement. The RSI is considered to be an internal strength indicator, not to be confused with relative strength which is compared to other stocks and indices. The RSI value will always move between 0 and 100. One of the most popular time frames using RSI is the 14-day.

Moving averages have the ability to be used as a powerful indicator for technical stock analysis. Following multiple time frames using moving averages can help investors figure out where the stock has been and help determine where it may be possibly going. The simple moving average is a mathematical calculation that takes the average price (mean) for a given amount of time. Currently, the 7-day moving average is sitting at 2.67.

Lets take a further look at the Average Directional Index or ADX. The ADX measures the strength or weakness of a particular trend. Investors and traders may be looking to figure out if a stock is trending before employing a specific trading strategy. The ADX is typically used along with the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI) which point to the direction of the trend. The 14-day ADX for Edap Tms SA (EDAP) is currently at 23.41. In general, and ADX value from 0-25 would represent an absent or weak trend. A value of 25-50 would support a strong trend. A value of 50-75 would signify a very strong trend, and a value of 75-100 would point to an extremely strong trend.

Like most families, Test Match Special has had some bitter rows – Telegraph.co.uk

To celebrate TMSs 60th birthday, a match is being played (and commentated upon) in Leeds. Agnews team will take on Geoffrey Boycotts; with the two broadcasting greats represented by their respective on-field captains Phil Tufnell and Vaughan. I think I may have drawn the short straw with my captain, Agnew said with a smile.

TMS favourites will play, as well as celebrities including Jim Carter of Downton Abbey, sprinter Yohan Blake and McFly drummer Harry Judd (a good cricketer, according to Agnew).

They could have sold 10 times the tickets, Agnew said. The TMS mystique remains strong.

It is amazing how much this programme continues to appeal, Agnew said.

Our audience numbers go up and up.

It is a companion for people: most are listening in a confined space, car, headphones in the office, in bed. Often for seven hours a day, five days at a time. There is a feeling of camaraderie, that we are in it together.

For many, TMS has been there during good times and bad. Agnew himself experienced this recently.

My wife Emma has been diagnosed with breast cancer, he said. Because of the nature of the relationship we have with listeners, if I am not on it, people will ask wheres Aggers?

Boycott leads out jokers at TMS T20 Test in Leeds – Yorkshire Post

Geoffrey Boycott chats to Jamacian sprinter Yohan Blake. Picture: Jonathan Gawthorpe

Published: 18:04 Thursday 24 August 2017

THE WEST Indies side that will step out against England at Headingley today has already taken some ribbing, but it was at a stadium two miles up the Otley Road this afternoon that the real comedians were to be found.

The BBCs Test Match Special, to celebrate its 60th anniversary, fielded two teams of jokers, retired cricketers and assorted pundits for a Twenty20 match on a Leeds University pitch at Weetwood that looked more village green than international stadium.

Geoffrey Boycott, 40 years to the month since scoring his 100th century in another Headingley Test, was one of the coaches, along with commentator Jonathan Agnew.

Boycott, these days a controversial summariser on the BBC radio warhorse, had said 24 hours earlier that this West Indies lot was the worst Test match team he had seen in more than 50 years of watching, playing and commentating.

Never one to mince his words, he appeared unrepentant as he strode onto what he described as a pockmarked pitch, beneath his customary straw Panama hat.

Instead, he offered some sage advise to his captain, Michael Vaughan. When the suns out and the pitch is dry, bat first in Yorkshire, he counselled.

Phil Tufnell, the opposing captain, was also not a stranger to the Yorkshire climate. You always come to Leeds and you always look up, he said.

The comedians taking to the crease included Andy Parsons, Dom Joly and Miles Jupp. They were joined by Made In Chelseas Jamie Laing, athlete Yohan Blake and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The teams also included England cricket veterans Graeme Swann, Simon Hughes, Ebony Rainford Brent and Charlotte Edwards and BBC commentators Simon Mann and Alison Mitchell.

Unfortunately, many people who think they may have Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) do not live in an area served by any TMS professionals. Luckily, some TMS professionals are able to provide services over the internet or telephone. Although diagnosis can't be performed over the internet or telephone and distance can provide a significant barrier to psychotherapy, the following people provide coaching and other services to people who aren't able to travel to meet a provider face to face. All that these other forms of pain management can give you are temporary relief...The most immediate relief for clients upon receiving the TMS diagnosis is that there is nothing structurally wrong with their body and are therefore encouraged to go about their daily activities of life without giving into the pain."

Arlen is a licensed psychologist in California. He has a doctorate in psychology. He says "I had been focusing on the mind body connection for a long time before I got exposed to Dr. Sarno. His thinking filled in important gaps for me. I have now spent several years specifically extending his diagnostic formulations into effective treatment for those people whose pain is caused by or worsened by emotions that have gotten directed into physical pain. I consider physical therapy, anti-inflammatory or pain deadening drugs and surgery to all have potential value. However, If you are not satisfied with the limitations of those approaches and believe that your pain has a significant emotional component, I can work with you on healing it." (Source)

Jill is a licensed marriage and family therapist in the Los Angeles area. She says "My interest in TMS grew after my own experiences with chronic pain for many years and my frustration with the traditional medical community. I knew there were many people suffering from 'mystery illnesses' that needed relief, guidance and support. I read Dr. John Sarno's book and was introduced to TMS through Dr. David Schechter in Los Angeles and Don Dubin MFCC. I am in private practice in the West Hollywood area, and chronic pain and somatization is one area of interest of mine. Unconscious 'bad' feelings that have been suppressed since childhood such as anger, guilt, sadness, rage, disappointment, unloveability and low self-esteem often emerge as somatic symptoms in various parts of the body." Clark has a masters in Humanistic Psychology (Mind/Body focus) and a PhD in Clinical Psychology, California Institute of Integral Studies. He is a licensed psychologist in California. He receives most of his referrals from Dr. Parvez Fatteh in the San Francisco Bay Area, who is a Sarno adherent and is board certified in physical medicine & rehabilitation, with a sub-specialty (Board Certified) in pain medicine.

He says, "About 8 years ago I was working with a client who had a number of issues, with the most compelling one severe tendon/muscle pain in his arms. He was diagnosed with repetitive motion injury and was so incapacitated that he couldn't even pick up his two year old daughter. This client introduced me to Sarno's work as he worked through his pain. The philosophy of Sarno's beliefs were familiar to me because of my background in mind/body psychologies in my Master's program at Sonoma State University. Approximately 7 years ago I had a close family member go through excruciating back pain. She consulted with over 10 health practitioners (mainstream and alternative) and did not find any diminution of the pain until she read "The Mind Body Prescription". She was pain free in about 2 months." (Source)

Patti is a licensed clinical social worker. She says of TMS "Treatment consists of identifying and acknowledging the suppressed emotion (anger, sadness, fear, etc.). That's it. It is not necessary to delve into the scenario which triggered those feelings in order to release the physical symptoms. Those symptoms were only there to protect your conscious mind from the feelings. So once the feelings are revealed, the symptoms simply fall away." (Source)

With William Proctor, he has written a book entitled Pain Free for Life. In it, Dr. Brady describes how he overcame his own pain:

"Turn on your TV!" she said. "John Stossel is interviewing Dr. John Sarno, who says he can cure back pain like yours." the Stossel interview of Dr. Sarno can be viewed for free here.

I wasn't optimistic ... But the more he talked, the more I listened--and the more intrigued I became. Following the show, I remembered that a friend had given me one of Sarno's books, and after a little rummaging around, I managed to find it. ... His ideas set me on a journey of healing that eventually cured my pain, and led me to where I am today. (p. 33)

Dr. Brady refers to TMS as Autonomic Overload Syndrome (AOS), but the explanation that he gives for AOS is fundamentally the same explanation that Dr. Sarno gives for TMS. (Scott Brady. Pain Free for Life. New York: Hachette Book Group. 2006.)

Dr. Stracks believes that the mind and body are intimately connected and that almost all disease processes involve an interplay between the two. His training in integrative medicine has taught him that all treatment plans must include not only a mind and body component but a social and spiritual component as well. In addition, Dr. Stracks believes that the most powerful interventions involve changes in nutrition, activity level, and other lifestyle areas, and he works to partner with patients to effect these changes. Dr. Stracks believes that many conditions can be controlled or even reversed with mind-body techniques, lifestyle changes, and other integrative therapies, and he likes working with patients and their primary physicians to safely reduce medication use whenever possible.
