The testosterone myth – The Week Magazine

We place unreasonable trust in biological explanations of male behavior. Nowhere is this truer than with testosterone. Contemporary pundits invoke the hormone nicknamed "T" to prove points about maleness and masculinity, to show how different men and women are, and to explain why some men (presumably those with more T) have greater libidos. Yet, despite the mythic properties popularly associated with T, in every rigorous scientific study to date there is no significant correlation in healthy men between levels of T and sexual desire.

Beginning in the 1990s and really picking up steam in the 2000s, sales of testosterone replacement therapies (TRTs) went from practically zero to over $5 billion annually in 2018. This was either because there was a sudden outbreak of "Low T" when a major medical epidemic was finally recognized, or because T became marketed as a wonder drug for men thrown into a panic when they learned that their T levels declined 1 percent annually after they hit 30.

The answer is not that men's bodies changed or that Low T was horribly underdiagnosed before but that, in the minds of many, T became nothing short of a magic male molecule that could cure men of declining energy and sexual desire as they aged.

What's more, many have been taught that, if you want to know what causes some men to be aggressive, you just test their T levels, right? Actually, wrong: the science doesn't support this conclusion either. Some of the famous early studies linking T and aggression were conducted on prison populations and were used effectively to "prove" that higher levels of T were found in some men (read: darker-skinned men), which explained why they were more violent, which explained why they had to be imprisoned in disproportionate numbers. The methodological flaws in these studies took decades to unravel, and new rigorous research showing little relation between T and aggression (except at very high or very low levels) is just now reaching the general public.

What's more, it turns out that T is not just one thing (a sex hormone) with one purpose (male reproduction). T is also essential in the development of embryos, muscles, female as well as male brains, and red blood cells. Depending on a range of biological, environmental, and social factors, its influence is varied or negligible.

Robert Sapolsky, a neuroscientist at Stanford University in California, compiled a table showing that there were only 24 scientific articles on T and aggression in 1970-80, but there were more than 1,000 in the decade of the 2010s. New discoveries about aggression and T? No, actually, although there were new findings in this period showing the importance of T in promoting ovulation. There is also a difference between correlation and cause (T levels and aggression, for example, provide a classic chicken-egg challenge). As leading experts on hormones have shown us for years, for the vast majority of men, it's impossible to predict who will be aggressive based on their T level, just as if you find an aggressive man (or woman, for that matter), you can't predict their T level.

Testosterone is a molecule that was mislabeled almost 100 years ago as a "sex hormone", because (some things never change) scientists were looking for definitive biological differences between men and women, and T was supposed to unlock the mysteries of innate masculinity. T is important for men's brains, biceps and that other word for testicles, and it is essential to female bodies. And, for the record, (T level) size doesn't necessarily mean anything: sometimes, the mere presence of T is more important than the quantity of the hormone. Sort of like starting a car, you just need fuel, whether it's two gallons or 200. T doesn't always create differences between men and women, or between men. To top it all off, there is even evidence that men who report changes after taking T supplements are just as likely reporting placebo effects as anything else.

Still, we continue to imbue T with supernatural powers. In 2018, a U.S. Supreme Court seat hung in the balance. The issues at the confirmation hearings came to focus on male sexual violence against women. Thorough description and analysis were needed. Writers pro and con casually dropped in the T-word to describe, denounce, or defend the past behavior of Justice Brett Kavanaugh: one commentator in Forbes wrote about "testosterone-induced gang rapes"; another, interviewed on CNN, asked: "But we're talking about a 17-year-old boy in high school with testosterone running high. Tell me, what boy hasn't done this in high school?"; and a third, in a column in The New York Times, wrote: "That's him riding a wave of testosterone and booze"

And it is unlikely that many readers questioned the hormonal logic of Christine Lagarde, then chair of the International Monetary Fund, when she asserted that the economic collapse in 2008 was due in part to too many males in charge of the financial sector: "I honestly think that there should never be too much testosterone in one room."

You can find T employed as a biomarker to explain (and sometimes excuse) male behavior in articles and speeches every day. Poetic license, one might say. Just a punchy way to talk about leaving males in charge. Yet when we raise T as significant in any way to explain male behavior, we can inadvertently excuse male behavior as somehow beyond the ability of actual men to control. Casual appeals to biological masculinity imply that patriarchal relationships are rooted in nature.

When we normalize the idea that T runs through all high-school boys, and that this explains why rape occurs, we have crossed from euphemism to offering men impunity to sexually assault women by offering them the defense "not guilty, by reason of hormones."

Invoking men's biology to explain their behavior too often ends up absolving their actions. When we bandy about terms such as T or Y chromosomes, it helps to spread the idea that men are controlled by their bodies. Thinking that hormones and genes can explain why boys will be boys lets men off the hook for all manner of sins. If you believe that T says something meaningful about how men act and think, you're fooling yourself. Men behave the way they do because culture allows it, not because biology requires it.

No one could seriously argue that biology is solely responsible for determining what it means to be a man. But words such as testosterone and Y chromosomes slip into our descriptions of men's activities, as if they explain more than they actually do. T doesn't govern men's aggression and sexuality. And it's a shame we don't hear as much about the research showing that higher levels of T in men just as easily correlate with generosity as with aggression. But generosity is less a stereotypically male virtue, and this would spoil the story about men's inherent aggressiveness, especially manly men's aggressiveness. And this has a profound impact on what men and women think about men's natural inclinations.

We need to keep talking about toxic masculinity and the patriarchy. They're real and they're pernicious. And we also need new ways of talking about men, maleness, and masculinity that get us out of the trap of thinking that men's biology is their destiny. As it turns out, when we sift through the placebo effects and biobabble, T is not a magic male molecule at all but rather as the researchers Rebecca Jordan-Young and Katrina Karkazis argue in their book Testosterone a social molecule.

Regardless of what you call it, testosterone is too often used as an excuse for letting men off the hook and justifying male privilege.

The Anabolic Doc: There Is NO Safe Way To Use Steroids For Bodybuilding – generationiron.com

Dr. Thomas OConnor has appeared in a selection of our Generation Iron original films over the years. This is due to the fact that he is a doctor that bridges the gap between muscle and medicine. He was strength athlete in his past, he has taken steroids, and he now has a medical license to treat people for after effects of long term steroid use. For this reason, hes known as The Anabolic Doc. So with that in mind, does he believe theres a safe way to use steroids on a bodybuilding level? In our latest GI Exclusive, Dr. Thomas OConnor explains why there is no safe way to use steroids in bodybuilding.

Dr. Thomas OConnor doesnt want to be labeled as an enemy of steroids. He understands and sympathizes on why a person would decide to take the risk and use steroids. Thats why he dedicates his life to treating these people once side effects appear in later years. He tries to bring real medical research into steroid use in sports while also understanding the position these athletes come from. Hes not a fear monger attacking steroids, hes a doctor trying to be an ally to steroid users even when he has to tell the dangerous truths about the drug.

Thats why you wont hear the Anabolic Doc sweepingly say that bodybuilders shouldnt use steroids. He would never say that. What he will do instead, is explain the very real ramifications of that decision. If a bodybuilder is willing to take the risk, he wont discriminate against them down the road when they come back to him for treatment.

What Dr. OConnor wont accept, is lies about the dangers of steroids. He wont sit and let people believe that steroids are actually not that bad for your health. He makes it plain and clear long term steroid use will have permanent effects on your heath. It will lower your testosterone to the point where it might never come back. This leads to needing testosterone replacement therapy (or TRT) for the rest of a persons life. It can lead to enlarged arteries and enlarged hearts. This can then in turn lead to heart disease and death.

Dr. OConnor will never step down from detailing the truly dangerous risks of steroids. But he leaves the decision to use up to the athlete afterwards. Just like cigarettes, people will make their own decision on how they want to handle long term health.

With all of that being said, we wanted Dr. OConnor to clear the air. Is it possible to safely use steroids in bodybuilding at all? Is there some sort of tips or protocol that can help prevent these long term dangers of use?

The Anabolic Docs answer is a simple one. No. Each body is different. Each drug has different effects on different users. Some people might make it out clean but thats not due to a specific way of use. Its due to luck. There is no medical way to condone the use of steroids safely for sports like bodybuilding. Dr. OConnor believes that the research shows its simply impossible.

You can watch Dr. Thomas OConnors, aka The Anabolic Doc, full statements in our latest GI Exclusive interview segment above!

How high testosterone levels have different health outcomes for men and women – Health24

High levels of the sex hormone testosterone may trigger different health problems in men and women, a new study reveals.

In women, testosterone may increase the risk for type 2 diabetes, while in men it lowers that risk. But high levels of testosterone increase the risk for breast and endometrial cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, the researchers reported.

"Our findings provide unique insights into the disease impacts of testosterone. In particular, they emphasize the importance of considering men and women separately in studies, as we saw opposite effects for testosterone on diabetes," said lead researcher Katherine Ruth, of the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

"Caution is needed in using our results to justify use of testosterone supplements until we can do similar studies of testosterone with other diseases, especially cardiovascular disease," Ruth explained in a University of Cambridge news release.

Dr Joel Zonszein, an emeritus professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, said there is a "sweet spot" of normal values for men and women. "Too much is not good, and too little is also bad," he explained.

"Testosterone supplementation is widely used in both men and women with normal values with no good evidence of benefit. Testosterone replacement in truly deficient individuals is something else," said Zonszein, who had no role in the study.

For the study, British researchers collected genetic data on more than 425 000 men and women listed in the UK Biobank. The investigators found more than 2 500 genetic variations associated with levels of testosterone and the protein that binds it sex hormone-binding globulin.

The researchers checked their results with analyses of other relevant studies and used a randomisation method to see if associations between testosterone and disease are causal.

In women, a high level of testosterone was tied to a 37% increased risk for type 2 diabetes and a 51% increased risk for polycystic ovary syndrome.

In men, however, a high testosterone level was linked to a 14% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the findings showed.

"The findings in men that higher testosterone has a protective effect and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes is news to me," Zonszein said. "This needs to be shown by other studies and its mechanism needs to be elucidated."

Dr Minisha Sood, an endocrinologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that testosterone may not be as protective in women because it converts to estradiol, which is related to the risk for breast cancer.

"High levels of testosterone in women have also been shown to increase visceral fat, which is linked to the components of metabolic syndrome," Sood said.

That men with high testosterone are at lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes is likely related to having more lean muscle mass, which improves insulin sensitivity and reduces the likelihood of type 2 diabetes, she said.

But Sood isn't a fan of men using testosterone supplements to ward off diabetes.

"Testosterone therapy comes with potential risks, including a high red blood cell count and higher rates of high-grade prostate cancer if a man is already predisposed to develop prostate cancer," she said.

Obese men or those with type 2 diabetes would benefit more from lifestyle changes to improve testosterone levels, namely, weight loss, healthy diet and exercise.

"This approach is preferred in that population over testosterone replacement whenever possible," Sood said.

The report was published in the journal Nature Medicine.

What Miami cop Javier Ortiz is and isn’t – Miami’s Community Newspapers

Grant Miller

Miami Police Captain Javier Ortiz makes a habit of grabbing headlines. A City of Miami Civilian Investigative Panel (CIP) issued a report in November 2019 that he violated department rules by working more hours off-duty than are allowed. In fact, they found that his ability to turn back time would shock both Cher and Doctor Who.

Ortiz, like all cops who work for Miami, are supposed to get off-duty gigs through the department, which bills and collects from the business owner or event planner and pays the money to the officer who did the work, minus deductions for taxes and other items.

Officers arent supposed to work more than 16 hours of off-duty in one day and not more than 36 hours in one work week. The CIP found that Ortiz worked 66 hours during one week in Spring 2017. On one occasion, in March 2018, he put in for 27.5 hours in one day while working the Calle Ocho parade.

Obviously, Ortiz worked 24 hours straight. Then he jumped into his TARDIS, Doctor Whos time-traveling box, backed up three hours, and worked some more, before calling it quits for the day.

But it wasnt his abuse of the off-duty system that has landed Ortiz in water hot enough to finally cook his goose. It was a claim that he made while testifying before the City of Miami Commission.

Standing at the podium, Ortiz claimed that he was neither white nor Hispanic. He claims that hes a black man. He wasnt Black when he first applied to be a cop. He put down in his application that he was a Hispanic male. He wasnt black when he filled out his paperwork to become a sergeant.

Ortiz applied to take the lieutenants exam in 2014 and the captains exam in 2017. It was only then that Ortiz claimed that he had African roots. How strong is his connection to Africa? These are his words: And if you know anything about the one-drop rule, which started in the 20th Century, which is what identifies and defines what a black male is, or a negro, you would know that if you have one drop of black in you, youre considered black.

Ortiz claims that his one drop of black blood makes him black. The claim was met with skepticism from both Commissioners Keon Hardemon and Joe Carollo. It was also met with outrage by the Miami-Dade Chapter of the NAACP and Miamis black police union, the Miami Community Police Benevolent Association.

Ortiz is the past president of the Fraternal Order of Police, the union that represents Miami cops. During his tenure from 2011 to 2017, he frequently did battle with Carollo. That was when Joe was the lone, crazy commissioner. His position with the union shielded him from the repercussions of his actions. Now, Joe Carollo has the votes to control the commission, making it bend to his will. That means things dont look good for Javi O.

Over the years, the city has been sued and settled lawsuits from victims who have said Ortiz falsely arrested or racially profiled them. Javi has yet to find any cop worthy of discipline, even those who have killed unarmed black people. He tried to organize a boycott of Beyonc. Ortiz came to within a hairs breadth of losing his job in 2017 after he told his Twitter followers to go after a police critic.

Ortiz arrestedNew York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson in 2017 for allegedly shoving him at Miamis Rolling Loud concert. The case was dropped when no other cop who was with Javi would corroborate his story that Anderson shoved him. The fact that Ortiz refused to attend two scheduled depositions set by the defense didnt help Javi, either. In 2011, Ortiz claimed that someone attending an Ultra Music Festival tried to fight him and had to be tasered, but the video on scene showed that there was no threat.

Javis hyper aggressiveness might have a chemical source. He cut a commercial for BodyRx, a testosterone replacement clinic, touting both his membership in the City of Miami Police Department and that he is testosterone deficient. Now, the City of Miami may be exploring how to fire Ortiz finally and make it stick. Word is that Mayor Francis Suarez and Police Chief Jorge Colina have met to discuss how to get rid of Ortiz. Javis breaking Police Department regulations about overtime may finally give the city enough legal grounds to rip the shield from his shirt.

While Javier Ortiz might have been able to say with a straight face that hes black, heres hoping the City of Miami does the right thing so that Ortiz will have to truthfully say that he is no longer a cop.

USADAs fan support is weaning in light of recent inconsistencies – FanSided

The UFC and the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) seemed like a match made in heaven when the two partnered up in 2015. The use of testosterone replacement therapy had gotten out of hand, and fighters were walking around looking like they jumped out of comic books. Already huge men like Vitor Belfort and Alistair Overeem were seen as inhuman due to their size. USADA was here to fix that.

Since that fateful summer day in 2015, USADA has suspended dozens, if not hundreds, of fighters for drug use. From the biggest of names like UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones to lesser-known fighters that you may not even be aware of. USADA was supposed to bring integrity to the promotion. It was supposed to let fans know that the fights were clean and the fighters were held to regular and fair standards. Thats become anything but the case in the eyes of many.

Fans are now beginning to have doubts about the USADA partnership with the UFC. Too many head-scratching rulings, inconsistent penalties, and just too many allowances given to too many big-time fighters, while others are left swinging in the wind. Fighters who dont draw as much or arent as close to top brass wait months, if not years to have their cases heard. Its become a practice that has bothered many. This is why the recent news surrounding one MMA pioneer has fans really bothered.

Like with Jessica Penne. The 36-year-old UFC fighter announced shed recently been suspended a whopping four years for a positive drug test. The length is due to it being her second offense, the first of which she claims was due to a tainted supplement. USADA agreed with the findings but suspended her anyway.

Similar cases happened with Bellator heavyweight Josh Barnett and UFC middleweight, Yoel Romero. Both men claimed to have taken tainted supplements, USADA agreed, and neither men were suspended beyond the time they served provisionally during the investigation. Penne had the same situation, only this time USADA wasnt so lenient. USADA gave her a four-year ban for, as Penne put it, an extremely low level of stanozolol(picogram levels).

Fans are noticing however that certain fighters curry favor with USADA, as a certain champion is actively fighting with picogram levels in his system.

This brings us to Nate Diaz, whom the officials at USADA notified right before his fight with Jorge Masvidal that he had a positive drug test to his name. USADA claimed that he had elevated levels, and even suggested to Diaz it was probably from a tainted supplement. Diaz refuted the accusation and forced the UFCs hand by saying he wasnt going to fight until he was cleared. Less than 24 hours later, thats what USADA did. Which left fans wondering if Diaz got special treatment.

Is Penne is being treated differently compared to how Jones and Diaz were treated? It sure seems like it. Diaz was given the benefit of the doubt, and his case was apparently rushed in 24 hours to ensure the big fight with Masvidal happened. For Jones, the UFC moved an entire event just to make sure Jones didnt miss his fight.

USADA seems to be willing to help out the fighters and the UFC when big bucks are on the line. Meanwhile, fighters like Penne, Barnett, Romero, and others are left to fend for themselves. Fans no longer expect consistency from USADA. After all, USADA agreed that Penne and Diaz both took tainted supplements. Yet one was allowed to fight the very next day, and the other (Penne) was given 18 months.

Fans are growing more and more frustrated with the pairing of USADA and the UFC, and the legitimacy and integrity of the testing has grown suspect in the eyes of the fans. Many no longer have faith in USADA, and if you dont have the publics trust, you cant be reiled upon to be taken seriously.

Watch: It looks like TRT Vitor is back and he skipped leg day. – Pro MMA Now

TRT Vitor Belfort was the scariest fighter Ive seen and that is including former UFC heavyweight champ, Andrei Arlovski in his first title run. It looks like that version of Belfort is back.

He shared a video of himself and his coach boxing and he looks jacked. it also looks like he skipped leg day. Never skip leg day Vitor

The former UFC light heavyweight champion is now signed to the Singapore based ONE organization. This means he is not subject to rigorous USADA testing and TRT could very well be pumping through his veins making the 42 year old move like a man in his early 30s. We are not confirming that he is back on testosterone replacement therapy but he does look better than he did at the end of his last UFC run.

What do you think?

DEADLINE ALERT: Bragar Eagel & Squire, P.C. Reminds Investors That a Class Action Lawsuit Has Been Filed Against Lipocine, Inc. and Encourages…

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Bragar Eagel & Squire, P.C., a nationally recognized shareholder law firm, reminds investors that a class action lawsuit has been filed in the United States District Court for the District of Utah on behalf of investors that purchased Lipocine, Inc. (NASDAQ: LPCN) securities between March 27, 2019 and November 8, 2019 (the Class Period). Investors have until January 14, 2020 to apply to the Court to be appointed as lead plaintiff in the lawsuit.

Click here to participate in the action.

Lipocines lead product candidate is TLANDO (LPCN 1021), an oral testosterone replacement therapy. The Company has previously submitted New Drug Applications (NDA) for TLANDO twice and, both times, received Complete Response Letters (CRL) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejecting the NDAs. The Company received the first CRL in June 2016 and the second in May 2018.

On March 27, 2019, Lipocine issued a press release announcing new topline results from a study evaluating TLANDOs effects on blood pressure (one issue cited by the FDA in a prior CRL rejecting TLANDOs NDA), as well as the Companys intention to refile the NDA for TLANDO in the second quarter of 2019.

On November 11, 2019, Lipocine issued a press release announcing receipt of a CRL from the FDA regarding its NDA for TLANDO. In the press release, Lipocine advised investors that the FDA had again rejected the NDA for TLANDOthis time because an efficacy trial had not met three of its secondary endpoints.

On this news, Lipocines stock price fell $1.93 per share, or 70.7%, to close at $0.80 per share on November 11, 2019.

The Complaint, filed on November 14, 2019, alleges that throughout the Class Period defendants made materially false and misleading statements regarding the Companys business, operational and compliance policies. Specifically, Defendants made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (i) the results from Lipocines clinical studies of TLANDO were insufficient to demonstrate the drugs efficacy; (ii) accordingly, Lipocines third NDA for TLANDO was highly likely to be found deficient by the FDA; and (iii) as a result, the Companys public statements were materially false and misleading at all relevant times.

If you purchased Lipocine securities during the Class Period, have information, would like to learn more about these claims, or have any questions concerning this announcement or your rights or interests with respect to these matters, please contact Brandon Walker or Melissa Fortunato by email at investigations@bespc.com, or telephone at (212) 355-4648, or by filling out this contact form. Benefits of Male Hormone Replacement Therapy – The Good Men Project

Dear Healthy Men: A recent news release suggested that men with low testosterone levels may have improvement in sexual function and quality of life. How can I determine whether I can benefit and what questions should I ask my doctor?

A: Before we get into the details of the newly reported benefits of testosterone therapyincluding the scope of those benefits and the men most likely to see themlets talk about what, exactly, testosterone is, what it does, and what constitutes low levels (also sometimes referred to as low T, andropause, or even male menopause).

To start with, testosterone is the most important male hormone (although women have measurable levels as well). In a nutshell, its what makes men menat least physically. Its manufactured in the testicles and plays a significant role in puberty (including penis and testicle growth and voice deepening), muscle and bone growth and development, strength, sex drive, and fertility.

Testosterone levels are usually measured with a blood test and are reported in terms of nanograms per deciliter (abbreviated as ng/dL). The normal range for men 20-70 is 300-1000 ng/dL. However, starting at about age 30, mens levels gradually decrease by an average of 1-2% per year. According to the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, the symptoms of low testosterone include little or no interest in sex, erectile dysfunction, less energy/feeling weak, mood changes and feeling depressed, loss of bone mineral density, and loss of body and facial hair. However, there is significant debate as to whether these symptoms are truly associated with low testosterone or if they are a result of other factors, such as chronic illness or certain medications.

Studies have found that 20%-40% of males ages 30-70 have low testosterone levels (although its important to note that not all of them will have any negative symptoms).

Okay, now lets talk about the news stories you may have heard about. The study in question evaluated 38 other high-quality studies and focused on men with age-related low testosterone and the effects of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). The findings were fairly limited: Overall, men who received TRT experienced small improvements in sexual function and quality of life. The researchers did not find that TRT offered any benefits for other age-related issues, such as lack of energy, mood, strength, memory, or cognitive ability. And they were unable to shed any new light on any of the previously reported links between testosterone replacement therapy and heart health, prostate cancer, or mortality.

So, what should you do if you think you might have age-related low testosterone? The Washington DC-based non-profit, Mens Health Network (menshealthnetwork.org), recommends that you discuss your symptoms with your doctor and ask for a blood test. If your levels come back low, you should ask your doctor the following questions recommended by the American College of Physicians (ACP): Will taking TRT help with the symptoms that I came to discuss with you? What method of TRT is best for me? What are the risks and side effects of treatment? And How long will it take for TRT to work, and what if it does not work?

Mens Health Network supports the ACPs guidelines, which recommend that doctors consider offering TRT via intramuscular injection rather than a patch, gel, or pellet. The ACP believes that injections are cheaper yet just as effective as other methods and involve similar side effects. However, they recognize that injections (which will need to happen every 1-4 weeks) may not be for everyone.

Man Accused Of Running Illegal Long Island Health Clinic – Daily Voice

A Long Island man is facing a host of charges for allegedly posing as a medical professional and running an illegal health clinic, where he treated patients.

Brian Michael Kaufman, 45, of Smithtown, allegedly ran Mens Health Solution of Smithtown on Middle Country Road, despite not having a medical license, Suffolk County DA Tim Sini announced.

He allegedly treated patients, including testosterone and steroid injections.

The investigation into Kaufmans practice determined that he allegedly has been operating the medical practice since at least August last year.

When he was arrested, Kaufman admitted to investigators that he was not licensed to practice any medical profession and had no training to provide medical services or provide testosterone replacement therapy, the DA said.

Mens Health Solution of Smithtown has since shuttered its doors.

"This individual put lives in danger and posed a clear threat to public health by masquerading as a medical practitioner," Sini said in a statement. "He did not have patients; he had victims. We are asking those victims to please contact the District Attorney's Office with any information they may have about Kaufman's alleged scam."

Kaufman has been charged with:

"This case is significant because it unearthed a convicted felon playing doctor who jeopardized his 'patients' lives," DEA agent Ray Donovan said. "In order to safeguard our communities, law enforcement has to act fast when they see someone threatening public health and safety.

"In this case, Brian Kaufman's alleged testosterone trafficking ring put people in harm's way while committing several crimes."

If convicted, Kaufman faces up to seven years in prison on the top count. He was arraigned this week and released with a GPS monitoring device. He will also be subjected to drug testing and is under travel restrictions.

Anyone who has received medical services from Kaufman or at Mens Health of Smithtown has been asked to contact the Suffolk County District Attorneys Office by calling (631) 853-8087.

Clarus Therapeutics Lauches JATENZO – Oral Testosterone Replacement Therapy – MedicalResearch.com

MedicalResearch.com Interview with:

Robert E. Dudley, Ph.D.Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and PresidentClarus Therapeutics

Dr. Dudley discusses the recent announcement that Clarus Therapeutics, Inc. has launched JATENZO (testosterone undecanoate) capsules for the treatment of appropriate men with testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism):

MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this announcement?

Response: JATENZOis the first and only oral softgel testosterone undecanoate and the first oral testosterone product approved by the U.S. FDA in more than 60 years.JATENZO is indicated for testosterone replacement therapy in adult males for conditions associated with a deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone.

The launch of JATENZO means that physicians and men living with testosterone deficiency due to genetic or structural abnormalities finally have a safe and effective oral testosterone replacement therapy. We are proud to commercially launch this unique oral formulation to healthcare providers and the appropriate patients who they treat. JATENZO is now available at pharmacies across the country.

MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings of the underlying studies?

Response: JATENZO was evaluated in a Phase 3 pivotal trial among 166 adult, hypogonadal men in a 4-month, open-label study with a topical testosterone comparator arm. The starting dose was 237 mg twice daily (BID) with meals. Dose adjustments (minimum 158 mg BID; maximum 396 mg BID) were made roughly 3 and 7 weeks after initiation of JATENZO based on average circulating testosterone concentration levels. 87% of JATENZO patients reached testosterone levels within the normal eugonadal range at the end of the study; peak testosterone levels were in close alignment with FDA targets.

Across all Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials combined, the safety of JATENZO has been evaluated in 569 patients who were treated with JATENZO for up to two (2) years. Liver toxicity was not observed with JATENZO in clinical trials.

Mild gastrointestinal adverse events observed with JATENZO were transient, manageable and did not lead to discontinuation.Decreased HDL cholesterol and increased hematocrit were associated with JATENZO use but did not lead to discontinuation of JATENZO. Only three of the 166 patients (1.8%) in the 4-month study experienced adverse reactions that led to premature discontinuation from the study, including rash (n=1) and headache (n=2). JATENZO was associated with an increase in systolic blood pressure. A boxed warning about the potential risks associated with elevated blood pressure appears on JATENZO labeling. Patients on JATENZO should have their blood pressure monitored.

Among the 569 patients who received JATENZO in all Phase 2 and 3 trials combined, the following adverse reactions were reported in >2% of patients: polycythemia, diarrhea, dyspepsia, eructation (i.e., burping), peripheral edema, nausea, increased hematocrit, headache, prostatomegaly (i.e., enlarged prostate), and hypertension.

MedicalResearch.com: How doesJATENZO differ from other treatments for testosterone deficiency?

Response: The launch of JATENZO is an important step forward in testosterone replacement therapy. The only other oral testosterone replacement therapy product ever approved by the FDA is methyltestosterone (an alkylated androgen) that has been associated with serious liver toxicity and is rarely, if ever, used today. Because JATENZO is formulated as a lipophilic prodrug, it bypasses the first-pass hepatic metabolism. No liver toxicity-related events were observed in clinical studies of JATENZO including in patients who took JATENZO at higher doses than recommended in current product labeling for two (2) years.

We believe JATENZO addresses a long-standing need for a safe and effective oral testosterone replacement product that meets current day FDA safety and efficacy standards. JATENZO enters a market where the vast majority of hypogonadal men are treated with injectable or topical testosterone products. JATENZO avoids administration challenges seen with these non-oral treatments it presents no injection site pain, no transfer risk, no mess, no skin irritation and no surgical procedure. Therefore, we believe a significant number of hypogonadal men will prefer JATENZO as an alternative to other forms of testosterone therapy.

MedicalResearch.com: How are men tested to determine ifJATENZO therapy is appropriate for them?

Response: According to the American Urological Association and Endocrine Society clinical guidelines, diagnosis of hypogonadism is determined by both the identification of symptoms and/or signs consistent with hypogonadism and blood test measurement of low morning total serum testosterone concentration (defined as <300 ng/dL, on two separate days). Healthcare providers should assess each patient individually for the appropriateness of JATENZO to treat their clinical hypogonadism.

MedicalResearch.com: What else should readers take away from your report?

Response: Clinical hypogonadism can be more complex than most people realize and left untreated, can have a profound negative impact for the individual. Men with the symptoms of hypogonadism have a real medical need that deserves appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Jatenzo, an Oral Testosterone Replacement Therapy, Now Available – Renal and Urology News

Jatenzo (testosterone undecanoate; Clarus Therapeutics), an oral testosterone replacement therapy, is now available for the treatment of hypogonadism.

Specifically, Jatenzo is indicated for testosterone replacement therapy in adult males for conditions associated with a deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone:

Jatenzo is not intended for use in males with age-related hypogonadism and its safety and efficacy have not been established in males <18 years old.

The treatment carries a Boxed Warning related to blood pressure (BP) increases that could potentially increase the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. In a clinical trial, Jatenzo increased systolic BP during 4 months of treatment by an average of 4.9 mmHg based on ambulatory BP monitoring and by an average of 2.8 mmHg from baseline based on BP cuff measurements. For this reason, baseline cardiovascular risk should be considered before initiating therapy and BP should be adequately controlled. Among study patients treated with Jatenzo, 7% were started on antihypertensive medications or required intensification of their antihypertensive medication regimen during the 4-month trial.

Jatenzo, a Schedule III controlled substance, is available in 158mg, 198mg, and 237mg softgels. Dosage should be individualized based on serum testosterone concentrations.

Jatenzo offers patients a convenient softgel formulation, and eliminates the worry of gel transference, skin irritation from patches, or pain from injections that other testosterone treatments carry, said Dr Ronald S. Swerdloff, lead investigator of the inTUne trial, the pivotal study that established the safety and efficacy of the treatment.
