How Changes in Technology and Law Created the iGaming Industry – UKTN

The iGaming industry was born in 1994 when changes in technology and legislation occurred simultaneously, creating the perfect conditions for online casinos, sports betting, lotteries, and bingo websites to open.

In the 26 years since the industry has grown and matured with several major publicly traded companies building large market shares in Europe and parts of North America. Casino revenues in Europe alone now exceed 20 billion (18 billion) each year, and the industry is expected to become valued at $100 billion (76 billion) by the end of this decade.

So what were these technological and legal changes? And could anything like that happen again?

Free Trade and Processing Zone Act

Spotting an opportunity, lawmakers in Antigua and Barbuda set about passing legislation that would make it possible for businesses to operate casinos from its jurisdiction, even if the customers were resident and present elsewhere.

Foodtech startup Grocemania announces nationwide expansion

The result was the Free Trade and Processing Zone Act, which was adopted on 10th November 1994. Very quickly, companies began scrambling to get a license and develop the software required to operate an online casino.

Microsoft Windows and the Internet

At the same time, Microsoft Windows 3.1 was the most common operating system loaded onto personal computers. It was great at the time, but something much more important was in the pipeline, Windows 95.

It went on sale in August of 1995, around the same time that the first online casinos began opening. It came preinstalled with Internet Explorer, the web browser of choice for most at the time.

Language learning app Memrise scores $15.5m Series B

This was often the first opportunity many people got to use the internet, especially as companies like AOL began aggressively pushing their dial-up services in the US and Europe.

Windows 95 sold 40 million copies in the first year, ten times more than 3.1, significantly increasing the number of people able to access the new online casinos.

It was an exciting time for users who had unprecedented opportunities to explore information, entertainment, and commerce in ways that had never been possible before. And, of course, iGaming companies were a big part of this.

As computers got more powerful and consumer internet connections got faster, iGaming companies improved their offering.

South Yorkshire tech firm Metalysis closes 20m funding round

We have seen this process repeating twice in recent years.

Smartphones

While the legal landscape in Europe remained the same, technology took a big step forward. As consumers began adopting smartphones en-mass in the late 2000s and early 2010s, iGaming companies began making their services available in this new format.

This meant new and more casual players could enjoy casino games without having to use a desktop or laptop computer.

US Legislation Changes

We can see history repeating itself today. In 2018, the US Supreme Court ruled that individual states had the right to set their own rules related to iGaming. Like in 1994, this started a race for companies to launch their services in the states that legalised sports betting and casinos.

Today, there are 12 states that have made it possible to place wagers online in some form, and more are expected to follow suit in the coming years.

As they do, the iGaming companies will vie for market share, just as they did in 1994 and 1995.

Being a younger coach helped Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly adapt to technology – Texans Wire

Bill OBrien is an old school coach. He likes to get in front of the team and tell them how the cow ate the cabbage.

Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly is a newer school coach. Set to turn 34 years old on Aug. 17, Kelly has a natural inclination to use video conferencing and screen sharing technologies. So when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the NFL into a virtual offseason, there was no learning curve for Kelly.

Not to be too general here, but being a younger coach if you will, being able to get used to FaceTiming and doing all of those things, its become a normal interaction with people, Kelly said. So this isnt than that different than what we usually do on a normal basis.

The second-year offensive coordinator knows on-field instruction during walk-throughs and classroom settings are the ideal when it comes to offseason workouts. However, the Texans, nor any NFL team, had the chance.

Wed much rather be in person, face-to-face, but being able to see each other through the Zoom media, being able to interact with the different technologies that we have was really beneficial, Kelly said.

Though the Texans do have some players who function better in-person than with video conferencing, Kelly nevertheless appreciates the participation from the players.

Said Kelly: Obviously, we would have loved to be in person but I think its a testament to the guys that are in that locker room that I dont think that we skipped a beat there as far as the communication because of the way they approached it, the professionalism of the guys in that room and really their willingness to learn.

The Texans can apply the lessons learned in the virtual offseason to the practice field throughout August.

How mask-makers are using technology to kill viruses left behind on protective face masks – CNBCTV18

They're everywhere now thanks to COVID-19 the protective mask. They come in the highest grade possible, like the N95 mask, which act as a near-foolproof barrier against the novel coronavirus, while the humbler ones are a makeshift handkerchief strung around the wearers nose and mouth. However, at the basic level, a mask is nothing but fabric that attempts to prevent the novel coronavirus from entering one's respiratory body through nasal and oral cavities. However, that simplicity in function could soon change.

A handful of textile companies have started waking up to the need of not just preventing transmission of viral particles to the wearer of a mask, but also destroying the virus in question that would otherwise remain on its surface. The one common link that connects the products of these manufacturers is a Swiss technology called HeiQ Viroblock applied generously in all these anti-viral masks.

Anti-viral masks versus regular masks

Normally a mask or a PPE cover-all are merely barriers that dont let the viruses inside, explains K S Sundararaman, Managing Director of Coimbatore-based Shiva Texyarn, Anti-viral technology, though, kills these viruses that settle on the surface of this barrier.

One of the textile companies to have adopted HeiQ technology, Shiva Texyarn launched its anti-viral masks exactly a month ago. By the time July was done, the Coimbatore textile company sold a whopping 20 lakh pieces. What we made was a washable mask for just 49 rupees, says Sundararaman. But its three-layered mask isnt as simple.

While the HeiQ Viroblock technology attempts to deactivate the viruses that settle on the surface of the mask, another layer of N-95 melt-blown fabric ensures the mask stays washable. Weve used a technique that ensures the virus doesnt penetrate the first layer of the mask, says Sundararaman. The masks third layer is untreated cotton.

Shiva Texyarn's masks come with an N95 melt-blown fabric to ensure that they stay washable. (Image: CNBC-TV18)

How does HeiQ work?

In a nutshell, HeiQ destroys viral particles left behind on the surface of the fabric its technology is used in. In other words, it is constantly self-sanitizing and breaking these viral particles down, says Bharat Subramaniam, Director, Emcee Apparels that is part of the Defend and Protecht initiative, a coming-together of three textile companies using HeiQ Viroblock technology to make anti-viral masks.

When a virus gets attracted onto a silver ion, which is fused to a bio-based lipsome layer, the silver ion destroys the outer layer (protein coat) of the virus, Bharat explains, Once this outer layer is destroyed, the viral RNA is released, which now cannot exist outside a host or the protein coat.

In layman terms, the silver ions and the bio-based liposome layer make the foundation of HeiQ Viroblock, which is the bedrock of the anti-viral technology that these masks come with. The silver ions attract viral particles and use simple osmosis to destroy their protein coats. The surface of the mask has a coating of silver ions and vesicle booster to speed up the process, Bharat says.

Defend and Protecht's mask uses four applications of HeiQ technology in just one mask. (Image: CNBC-TV18)

Mask sales in top gear

Defend and Protecht, Shiva Texyarn, Arvind Ltd and Loyal Textile Mills are some of the textile majors using HeiQ viroblock to equip otherwise basic washable cloth masks. In less than a month since Defend and Protecht launched its top-line of anti-viral masks, priced at Rs 250 per piece, it sold nearly 6,000 pieces. The company is also launching a new Essentials line, priced at between Rs 30 and Rs 60 per mask.

The companys manufacturing footprint, in Chennai, has a capacity of 20,000 pieces per day but only makes around 5,000 to 10,000 masks every day. We can scale up to 75,000 masks, per day with ease, says Bharat, In fact, the machines that weve allotted to manufacture these masks ensure a capacity of 100,000 pieces per day. This isnt surprising especially given that the textile manufacturers that are part of Defend and Protecht Emcee Apparels, Sreekumar Texind Corporation and Dvintex are capable of making an excess of a million shirts every month.

Shiva Texyarn is targeting a sales target of 10 lakh masks this month, in the domestic market alone. We dont foresee the need to scale up further until the export ban is lifted, says Sundararaman, There is a lot of interest from countries as far as Brazil because of our high-level of protection and our competitive price point. While the companys basic product is priced at a very competitive Rs 49, more fancily designed variants are priced at Rs 70.

Value-additions to anti-viral masks

For a relatively steeper price of Rs 250 per piece, Defend and Protechts top-line of anti-viral masks come with some nifty value-additions. In addition to the HeiQ Viroblock technology that exists in all of its masks, HeiQ Pure controls odour that is emanated thanks to bacterial breakdown of sweat, which is fairly common while wearing mask.

Apple Watch Likely to Adopt MicroLED Display Technology in 3-4 Years – MacRumors

This year's Apple Watch Series 6 is expected to feature an OLED screen like previous models, but a future model is likely to be the first Apple product to adopt MicroLED display technology, albeit not for another three to four years.

From a DigiTimes' report filed on Monday:

Smartwatches will be the first major applications for micro LED with volume adoption likely to take place 3-4 years from now, according to Epistar chairman Lee Biing-jye.

Epistar has overcome many micro LED technological difficulties, such as mass transfer, and expects to achieve reliable production capability in 2-3 years, and introduce end-market applications in 3-4 years, Lee noted.

Apple is reportedly investing $330 million in the Taiwanese MicroLED factory to manufacture displays for future iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and other devices. MicroLEDs sized 20-50 microns are too small for PCB substrates that support minimum sizes of 50-100 microns, and therefore glass substrates are used.

Taiwanese LCD panel maker AU Optronics is understood to be supplying the glass substrates for the displays, while Epistar is said to be now focusing on improving yield rates for micro LED epitaxy and reducing cost for mass transfer.

There are several advantages of MicroLED screens over LCD and OLED displays, including being thinner and more energy efficient. For example, the power consumption of MicroLED screens is only one-tenth that of LCD displays, and the color saturation is close to OLED.

Owing to the difficulties involved in developing MicroLED technology, early designs are expected to rely on mini-LEDs that are somewhere in between traditional LED and MicroLED technology. However, Apple still considers MicroLED technology to be the "top priority," according to a previous report.

Apple has six mini-LED products in the works that are set to debut in 2020 and 2021, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple is said to be debuting the technology in a 12.9-inch iPad Pro for launch later this year, followed by a 27-inch iMac Pro, a 14.1-inch MacBook Pro, a 16-inch MacBook Pro, a 10.2.-inch iPad, and a 7.9-inch iPad mini.

Apple has reportedly been testing prototype Apple Watch models with MicroLED displays since 2017. While early rumors suggested an Apple Watch with a microLED display could launch as early as 2020, one leaker poured cold water on that prediction in May by claiming that this year's Apple Watch Series 6 will use the same OLED display as previous models.

There is precedent for new screen technologies showing up in the Apple Watch first. When it was introduced in 2014, the Apple Watch had an OLED screen. The technology then migrated to the iPhone X three years later.

Virginia launches the first U.S. app using Apple-Google coronavirus notification technology – CNBC

Virginia's coronavirus notification app, called Covidwise, launched on Wednesday, just under four months after the Apple-Google partnership was first announced.

Virginia is the first state in the United States to use the Apple-Google technology built into iPhones and Android phones. The exposure notification technology and contact-tracing apps wereonce heralded as a critical part of some countries' strategies to lift their lockdowns, but low adoption and unclear effectiveness in some countries have dampened enthusiasm for the apps.

Virginia's app, like all apps using the Apple-Google framework, uses Bluetooth signals on a smartphone to determine how closely and for how long two phones were nearby, without collecting the location of the contact or the identity of the users. Then, if one of the phone's users were to test positive for Covid-19, the system is able to notify any other phones with the app that they might have been exposed to the virus through a push notification and tell them to get tested or quarantine.

"For the purpose of this app, there wasn't an absolute need to be able to track where you are or who you are," Jeff Stover, director of the Virginia Department of Health, said on a video call with reporters. "The most important thing was that you know whether or not you've potentially been exposed, and that we can all take actions to do whatever prevention is necessary."

When users test positive for Covid-19, they get a six-digit pin number provided by the Virginia Department of Health that they can input into their app. Once that six-digit pin is entered, the Virginia system tells other phones with the app that they that had been close to a person who tested positive, and that they have likely been exposed. That information is delivered in a push notification from the Covidwise app. The Apple-Google system does this by unscrambling random keys that correspond to when phones were in close range with each other.

Virginia's Covidwise app requires a 6-digit PIN number to confirm a positive test result.

Screenshot/CNBC

The app wasn't built by Apple or Google the two tech giants built software into iOS and Android to make it possible.Virginia paid SpringML $229,000 to develop the Covidwise app, and it was funded by the CARES act, Stover said.

Other states in the U.S. have released similar apps, but some of them, such asonein Utah, have used a location-based approach instead of Apple-Google system, which requires apps using it to eschew GPS and emphasizes anonymity. Apple and Google have also said they will turn the system off when the pandemic is over.

One of the most successful exposure notification apps using the Apple-Google system is in Germany. The app, called Corona-Warn-App, was downloaded over 16 million times at the end of July out of a population of 82 million, according to the BBC. In France, which used a different Bluetooth system not backed by the tech giants, only 14 people were notified using the app over its first three weeks.

One issue with the apps is that they will need to be installed by a large percentage of the population to work effectively if a phone isn't running the app, then it will miss potential exposures. One study by researchers at Oxford University suggested that 60% of the population would need to install an exposure notification app to suppress the virus.

"Effective is going to be anyone's guess as how you want to describe that. But they also state in the [Oxford] study that they estimate that for every one to two app users, you will potentially reduce the infection by one," Stover said.

Virginia plans to heavily advertise the app on billboards, digital ads, and through partnerships with schools and workplaces, and Google has offered advertising credits for its search engine and Google Play app store, officials said.

Google said last week in a blog post that 20 states and territories are "exploring" apps based on the system. While the app works outside of Virginia, positive tests require a six-digit pin from the Virginia Department of Health to notify others, effectively limiting its range.

There is no plan for a national coronavirus exposure app, but Virginia officials said that the state is likely to participate in a program building a "national key server" that would enable apps from different states to work together.

Ideal Power Signs $1.2 Million Contract to Partner with Diversified Technologies on Demonstration of B-TRAN Enabled High Efficiency Direct Current…

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 10, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Ideal Power Inc.(NASDAQ: IPWR) (the Company), pioneering the development and commercialization of highly efficient and broadly patented B-TRAN bi-directional power switches, was awarded a $1.2 million contract by Diversified Technologies, Inc. (DTI) to supply B-TRAN devices as part of a two-year, $3.0 million contract awarded to DTI by the United States Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The objective of the project is to develop and demonstrate B-TRAN enabled high efficiency 12kV medium voltage direct current (MVDC) circuit breakers for the U.S. Navy as part of their ship electrification program. The project is funded under the Department of Defenses Rapid Innovation Fund, which is designed to accelerate the commercialization of high-value, high-impact technologies.

Ideal Powers B-TRAN technology is an enabling technology for high-efficiency MVDC circuit breakers. The Company believes that the low conduction loss of B-TRAN is an improvement of more than 50% compared to conventional semiconductor power switches, such as insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). In an MVDC circuit breaker, where the device is continuously conducting electricity and producing heat, the importance of the B-TRANs low conduction loss is magnified and results in higher energy efficiency and simpler, lower cost and more compact thermal management. In addition, the fast switching speed of the B-TRAN can protect power distribution systems from faults 100 to 200 times faster than conventional mechanical circuit breakers. DTI intends to introduce a family of MVDC circuit breaker products incorporating B-TRAN as a result of the demonstration.

Ideal Power and DTIs collaboration will help establish the viability of shipboard MVDC power distribution by delivering extremely fast fault interruption, low fault currents, flexible programmable coordination, and mechanical isolation, which are key factors to the reliable and safe operation of DC power systems. The U.S. Navy has stated a goal to electrify its fleet to increase shipboard power densities necessary to field more efficient ships with greater operational flexibility. The use of MVDCs in ship electrification and distributed DC networks would result in less vulnerable power distribution systems and naval vessels.

This project is a major step forward in demonstrating B-TRANs capabilities, said Dan Brdar, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ideal Power. Given the performance characteristics of B-TRAN versus conventional power switches - higher efficiency, lower cooling complexity, and fewer components - we believe that B-TRAN can enable a wide variety of emerging applications. For this project, we are excited to be partnering with DTI, who brings expertise designing and building solid state MVDC circuit breakers, in demonstrating B-TRAN as an enabling technology for the U.S. Navy as part of their ship electrification program. We potentially see the U.S. military as one of the early adopters of B-TRAN devices.

Legacy circuit breakers have always been limited by their mechanical complexity, slow switching speed, and high conduction losses all issues that are solved by the integration of our B-TRAN power semiconductor technology, continued Mr. Brdar. To date, the widespread adoption of DC distribution and transmission has been stalled by the lack of an efficient, low-loss, solid-state circuit breaker. B-TRAN-enabled high-efficiency MVDC circuit breakers could potentially be utilized in various industrial applications, including medium-to-high voltage DC transmission systems and new electrical generation, such as solar and wind, that are DC-based. We believe B-TRAN to be a potential game-changer for distributed DC networks and will seek to leverage our collaboration with DTI for the U.S. Navy to establish inroads into the broader market for industrial and utility DC networks. According to a recent market research report from MarketsandMarkets, the market for industrial and utility DC networks is anticipated to exceed $12 billion by 2024.

About Ideal Power Inc. Ideal Power (Nasdaq: IPWR) is pioneering the development of its broadly patented bi-directional power switches, creating highly efficient and ecofriendly energy control solutions for industrial, alternative energy, military and automotive applications. Could This ‘New’ Coloured Cotton Technology Eliminate Toxic Dyes? – Eco Warrior Princess

This summer, a group of scientists at CSIRO in Canberra have developed a method to grow cotton that has the potential to wipe out the need to dye the fabric by genetically modifying the fibre. Their experiments have cracked cottons molecular colour code in order to diversify the crop from its natural off-white or the earthy green and brown hues of naturally coloured cotton, into potentially every shade of the rainbow. In just a few months time, theyre hoping for their first harvest of brightly coloured cotton fibre, revolutionising Australias $2 billion cotton industry by eliminating toxic dyes from the production process.

The innovation comes at a moment when the environmental impact of textile dyes is reaching a breaking point. Mainstream dyeing techniques used extensively across the industry still use carcinogenic chemicals that threaten the health of factory workers. Whats more, the irresponsible disposal of toxic waste from processing plants pollutes waterways that millions of people and animals rely on as their lifeblood, with nearly 20% of all water pollution originating from textile dyeing treatments. Its said that in some parts of China and India, local communities can predict the next big colour trend in fashion by simply looking at the colour of the river, which 2016 sustainable fashion documentary RiverBlue showcases in graphic and heartbreaking detail.

But these colourful chemicals are just the tip of the iceberg. The true cost of colour is arguably its water footprint. Unless waterless dye technology is used, approximately 200 tonnes of water is required to make just one tonne of fabric. Cotton is also already an incredibly thirsty fabric before it even reaches the dyeing stage, with around 10,000 litres used for every one kilogram of cotton. When used in denim production, intense dark shades like indigo and black are often regarded as the most polluting and resource-intensive colourants, so if cotton growth in fashion-friendly colours takes off, the industrys water consumption could take a much-needed nosedive.

Related Post: 5 Films That Delve into the Social and Environmental Impacts of Fashion

Ethical fashion writer Elizabeth L. Cline has challenged the scientific discovery, reminding us that the concept of coloured cotton plants is in fact an ancient technology developed by indigenous cultures in the Andes region over four thousand years ago. More recently, coloured cotton has slipped under the radar as one of the biggest eco-trends of the 1990s, used extensively by California cotton breeder Sally Fox.

Another criticism of this new cotton technology is that it is essentially yet another GMO (genetically modified organism) seed ripe for monopolisation by the likes of Monsanto, a vast multinational corporation which holds unthinkable power over cotton farmers around the world. Monsanto controls about 95% of the cotton market through its privatisation of GMOs, which has colossal consequences for agricultural workers. This includes a shocking 300,000 suicides in India alone as a direct result of crippling debt, yield instability and even threats of jail time and violence incurred from the trap of Monsantos empire.

It is also important to mention that while it can be seen as more sustainable than synthetics, cotton is not necessarily any kinder than fashions other favourite fabric, polyester. Just because cotton is biodegradable and renewable rather than a microfibre-releasing plastic made from crude oil doesnt mean the industrys focus should be on improving such a problematic plant in the first place. More low-impact fabric alternatives include other plant-based materials such as hemp, bamboo, nettle and linen as well as man-made cellulosic fibres like viscose, modal and tencel. However, cotton still makes up over a fifth of all new garment production (although only about one percent of this cotton is organic), therefore any innovation that aims to make the natural fabric more sustainable is welcome in a sector that is still so reliant on such excessive water and pesticide consumption.

Related Post: Wrangler Indigood Collection: Iconic Denim Takes First Sustainable Steps with New Dye TechnologyLooking forward, the same group of CSIRO scientists behind this colourful cotton project are also still in the process of developing cotton plants which could eventually generate wrinkle-free fabric. Hoping to eradicate the environmental impact of ironing clothes and the intense chemical treatments such as formaldehyde used to create non-iron shirts, the team have spent the last few years testing thousands of cotton plants to develop new varieties with greater elasticity than their synthetic counterparts.

Other researchers are turning to natural dyes and regenerative agriculture to transform fashions footprint from its desire for an ever-growing spectrum of colours on the catwalk. Fibershed is a non-profit enterprise driven by regional communities which, as founder Rebecca Burgess recently told Atmos, was born from a dream to decouple the color from the toxicity through ancient forms of ecological technology. Perhaps the secret to dye-free textiles is not in the laboratory, but in the soil after all.

New security technology deployed by Reds, city will secretly detect knives and guns – Cincinnati Business Courier

By Chris Wetterich Staff reporter and columnist, Cincinnati Business Courier

Aug 7, 2020, 12:35pm EDT

The Cincinnati Reds and the city of Cincinnati are deploying a covert threat detection solution that will be able to identify people carrying guns and knives without them knowing it, according to Patriot One Technologies.

The city plans to use Patriot Ones Patscan platform in certain city facilities that will not be disclosed. Patriot One is selling the technology to the city through Ginter Electrical.

"Were excited to deliver our covert threat detection solution that is not only focused on saving lives but saving a way of life that the citys employees, residents and visitors have come to expect," Patriot Ones CEO Martin Cronin said.

The artificial-intelligence technology platform is already deployed by the Reds at Great American Ball Park, according to the company.

The system could allow people to pass through invisible checkpoints with everyday objects without being scanned or going through a metal detector. The sensors use biomagnetic resonance, cognitive microwave radar and video object recognition to detect weapons, including abnormal amounts of meal, which could detect an improvised explosive device.

The scanners do not gather personal information or produce body images in a way that an airport scanner does.

Our philosophy of detection is that people should be able to go about their business unimpeded and not have to go through thick security checkpoints to be wanded, padded down, every time they go into a hotel or a shopping mall or anywhere where the public may be at risk of acts of violence, Cronin told TechRepublic earlier this year.

We know that people in Western societies don't want to live in a mass surveillance state. What our sensors are looking for is the presence of a weapon.

Casey Weldon, a spokesman for the city, said the system the city uses will detect guns and knives but the city wont be disclosing which facilities it will be deployed in for security reasons.

We pride ourselves on being a forward thinking, innovative Midwest city; always looking for ways to enrich our residents and visitors lives, while keeping them safe," Interim City Manager Paula Boggs Muething said in a news release. "I am proud to be part of a nationwide group against gun violence, as we continue our own efforts to develop Cincinnati as a smart, safe city with safer, healthy communities. Bringing solutions like the Patscan Threat Detection Platform will help us achieve this goal.

Technology paving the way – The West Australian

When government restrictions came in earlier this year as a result of COVID-19, the real estate industry adapted quickly to the new measures with technology-led experiences.

For REA Group Chief Economist Nerida Conisbee, the use of technology was integral, particularly in the case of home inspections and auctions, which largely went online.

Since mid-March, when initial COVID-19 restrictions came into force, Ms Conisbee said realestate.com.au had experienced 13.8 million video views and 14 million 3D tour views.

It does appear virtual property tours will be one change to the way people view property, even when there are very few COVID-19 restrictions, she said.

Online auctions have tapered off slightly since restrictions to live auctions reduced, however, many agents are now using them in conjunction with live auctions for people that are unable to attend in person.

While listings on realestate.com.au have increased since last year, Ms Conisbee said they did dip early on in the pandemic, which was most likely caused by the uncertain times.

However, despite the doom and gloom predicted for the residential property market because of the pandemic, Ms Conisbee said Australias property market was looking surprisingly strong given we were in recession and seeing rising unemployment.

Prices have not dropped as much as we would have expected in such conditions, she said. It is likely that stability in the banking system and record levels of government assistance have been a key factor in the stability of the property market.

While restrictions have started to ease across most of the country, except in Melbourne, Ms Conisbee said she believed digital inspections were here to stay, with online auctions expected to feature alongside traditional in-person events.

FLYING WITH SAVVY: Technology takes crop dusting to a new level – News-Daily.com

HANSEN After spreading dry fertilizer on potato fields near Murtaugh Lake, Keith Johnson flew his Thrush aircraft west over the Hansen Butte, then disappeared as he circled back to the extinct shield volcano.

Minutes later Johnsons airplane touched down on an old landing field, then climbed over bumpy terrain to the top of the butte where fellow pilot Marty Brill waited with his plane.

Workers poured dry fertilizer from a truck into the hopper of Brills aircraft as Johnson taxied his plane to the remote makeshift filling station surrounded by communication towers.

The two pilots, employed by Crop Jet Aviation, put their heads together to discuss their next flights. After consulting an aerial photo of the area, Johnson would continue to fertilize potatoes near the lake and Brill would move on to fields west of the butte.

Both are experienced pilots. They used to be crop dusters; now theyre called ag aviators.

Gone are the days of the ancient biplanes that swept the tops of crops, gushing fertilizer and pesticides from their wings. Technology has transformed the agricultural aviation industry, Crop Jet owner George Parker told the Times-News.

The industry has changed even in my time, Parker said, referring to the technological advances made to equipment. Turbine engines. GPS systems. Flow control systems to put out an even and specific rate.

Success! An email has been sent to with a link to confirm list signup.

Error! There was an error processing your request.

With these advances, the role of the ag aviator has also changed.

Pilots are no longer limited to spraying wet applications such as liquid fertilizer and herbicides. By swapping out spray nozzles with a dry disbursement system, the pilots can now spread materials such as dry chemicals, rodenticides and seeds.

A good portion of Crop Jets work for reseeding of wildfire rehabilitation projects with the National Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, Parker said.

Aerial application is used for jobs nothing else can do where they cant get the ground rigs on the job site, he said. Spreading (crop) diseases is also a problem for ground rigs.

Parker, a second-generation ag pilot, owns four Thrush aircraft and one helicopter.

These days I mostly push a pencil, he said, but I still fly planes and helicopters.

Leveraging Synergies Created by the Convergence of Operational and Engineering Technologies and Digitalisation, Can Deliver Significant Savings for…

Pioneering technology expert tells ADIPEC Energy Dialogue up to 80 per cent of plant shutdowns could be mitigated through combination of advanced electrification, automation and digitalisation technologies

Greater use of renewables in power management processes offers oil and gas companies opportunities to create efficiencies, sustainability and affordability when modernising equipment, or planning new CAPEX projects

ABU DHABI, UAE, Aug. 9, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Leveraging the synergies created by the convergence of electrification, automation and digitalisation, can create significant cost savings for oil and gas companies when making both operational and capital investment decisions, according to Dr Peter Terwiesch, President of Industrial Automation at ABB, a Swiss-Swedish multinational company, operating mainly in robotics, power, heavy electrical equipment, and automation technology areas.

Leveraging Synergies Created by the Convergence of Operational and Engineering Technologies and Digitalisation, Can Deliver Significant Savings for Energy Companies, revealed at ADIPEC Energy Dialogues

Participating in the latest ADIPEC Energy Dialogue, Dr Terwiesch said up to 80 per cent of energy industry plant shutdowns, caused by human error, or rotating machinery or power outages, could be mitigated through a combination of electrification, automation and digitalisation.

"Savings are clearly possible not only on the operation side but also, using the same synergies between dimensions, you can bring down the cost schedule and risk of capital investment, especially in a time when making projects work economically is harder," explained Dr Terwiesch.

A pioneering technology leader, who works closely with utility, industry, transportation and infrastructure customers, Dr Terwiesch said despite the increasing investment by oil and gas companies in renewables and the growing use of renewables to generate electricity, both for individual and industrial uses, hydrocarbons will continue to have an important role in creating energy, in the short to medium term.

"If you look at the energy density constraints, clearly electricity is gaining share but electricity is not the source of energy; it is a conduit of energy. The energy has to come from somewhere and that can be hydrocarbons, or nuclear, or renewables," he said.

Nevertheless, he added, the greater use of renewables to generate electricity offers oil and gas companies the option of integrating a higher share of renewables into power management processes to create efficiencies, sustainability and affordability when modernising equipment, or planning new CAPEX projects.

The ADIPEC Energy Dialogue is a series of online thought leadership events created by dmg events, organisers of the annual Abu Dhabi International Exhibition and Conference. Featuring key stakeholders and decision-makers in the oil and gas industry, the dialogues focus on how the industry is evolving and transforming in response to the rapidly changing energy market.

With this year's in person ADIPEC exhibition and conference postponed to November 2021, the ADIPEC Energy Dialogue, along with insightful webinars, podcasts and on line panels continue to connect the oil and gas industry, with the challenges and opportunities shaping energy markets in the run up to, and following, a planned three-day live stream virtual ADIPEC conference taking place from November 9-11.

An industry first of its kind, the online conference will bring together energy leaders, ministers and global oil and gas CEOs to assess the collective measures the industry needs to put in place to fast-track recovery, post COVID-19.
