The Dalai Lama comes to D.C. to talk capitalism

The Dalai Lama prays before he speaks at the American Enterprise Institute in D.C. about happiness and free enterprise. (Jim Watson/AFP/Getty Images)

Two things in life are certain: rebirth and taxes.

That, at least, is according to the Dalai Lama, who spoke at a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., on Thursday about the spirituality of capitalism.

The American Enterprise Institute hosted the Tibetan spiritual leader, who melded the ideas of free will and free enterprises in a wide-ranging, three-hour longlive streamed and live blogged event.

The very purpose is to derive to seek enlightenment. Happy community, happy family, happy nation. Then happy world. We are far from the world. Where do we start? From the government? No. From the UN? No. From individuals, AEI.org's managing editorSharon Kehnemui quoted him as saying.

The Dalai Lama drew on Buddhist text to emphasize personal responsibility, a key sticking point for free-marketeconomists: Buddha emphasized you can not rely on prayer. You must rely on your actions. Buddha cannot give you what you want, you are your own master.

He alsocalled for a century of peace and a focus on connecting east and west to build economic, political and spiritual stability.

The American Enterprise Institute seems to be living by those words. AEI's president and vice president traveled to Tibet to meet with the Dalai Lama last year.

Perhaps they are hoping the Dalai Lama can lend some wisdom for libertarians whose idea of a free enterprise system is under immense strain, according to the AEI.

We must stop considering free enterprise purely in terms of economic gain and wealth creation and begin considering it in terms of human fulfillment, the institutewrote on its website.

Megan Fox's spiritual baby name revealed

21 FEBRUARY 2014 Megan Fox and her husband Brian Austin Green have revealed the name of their baby son Bodhi Ransom Green.

The couple, who are already parents to 15-month-old son Noah, welcomed their second son on 12 February.

The unusual moniker, which was revealed by TMZ, means the "understanding possessed by Buddha" in regards to the "nature of things" in Buddhism. When translated into English, it can mean simply, "enlightenment".

Megan and Brian are the second set of parents in just a few days to name their baby Bodhi. Australian actress Teresa Palmer and her husband Mark Webber announced the birth and name of their firstborn on Monday Bodhi Rain Palmer.

Megan, 27, is also a stepmother to Brian's 11-year-old son Kassius with his ex-partner Vanessa Marcil.

In November, the Transformers actress spoke to People about her growing family. "I think Noah is going to be an amazing big brother with time," the star said.

"I think he has an idea, but I don't think he understands that a baby will be living with us all of the time - that will be an adjustment.

"He loves to be the centre of attention," she added. "And I also think he is a really sensitive child. I think that he's going to be a nurturer."

On the Road to Enlightenment With Andrew Ross Sorkin, David Lynch, and Dr. Oz

Andrew Ross Sorkin looks vaguely confused. Awhile back,he interviewed eccentric hedge-fund squillionaire Ray Dalio, who sent him to a meditation class, and now all of a sudden, the New York Times scribe and CNBC host is here, onstage at the Axa building on a Tuesday night, hosting an event titled Meditation: Creativity, Performance, and Stress. It is sponsored by the David Lynch Foundation, which, the program tells us, was founded by the Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks auteur to teach disadvantaged teenagers and war veterans transcendental meditation, or TM, as it is has come to be known. Like any David Lynch production, the cast is star-studded the list of panelists includes Dalio, Mario Batali, Dr. Oz, and Arianna Huffington the point is inscrutable, and the mood is surreal.

Onstage, Sorkin fiddles with multiple rubber bracelets, one of which may or may not be in support of the small minority he belongs to, of Journalists Who Have Crossed Over Into the Realm of the People They Cover and Arent Always Comfortable With It. He tells the audience he is a natural skeptic. When Im sitting on the floor, reciting my mantra, my wife is like, Ugh, he says. She thinks Im a quack.

The woman next to me makes a harrumphing sound that suggests, were she Sorkins wife, she would never discourage his spiritual growth. But could she agent his $2 million book deals? Maybe, actually. Tickets to tonights event cost $200, and the topics of conversation seem geared towards high-intensity individuals: world-beaters who are interested in adding the spirituality stick to their arsenal of weapons. You are one of the busiest people I know, Sorkin says to Dr. Oz, because apparently Sorkin knows Dr. Oz. When do you find time to meditate?

The Great and Powerful says he finds the TM routine mediating for 20 minutes two times a day to be a time-saver, in that having a clear mind allows him to accomplish tasks more quickly. For this reason, he has introduced it to the people in his office. A brief video is shown of Ozs employees talking about how it has made them all more calm. And I mean, I work with some high-strung people, one producer says to the camera. After that, Oz and a panel of medical experts talk about the science behind TM. Meditating subjects, they say, have been found to have increased waves of activity across the prefrontal cortex or, the CEO of the brain, as Dr. Pamela Peeke, who describes herself as quintuple-A personality, refers to it. Another doctor with a Freudian accent affirms that TM can positively impact blood pressure, prevent heart attacks even death. The audience murmurs appreciatively. If there is one certainty wealthy baby boomers are more committed to beating than taxes, it is death.

Not to mention, TM can give you those investment ideas that can make you squillions. Its a tool, says Ray Dalio, who is on second panel, the theme of which seems to be Entrepreneurs Who Have Combined Hippie Values and Capitalistic Drive to Achieve Great Success. New ideas keep coming up out of your subconscious, he says. It makes me feel like a ninja in a fight. In addition to promoting radical honesty at his Connecticut-based hedge fund, Dalio says he encourages employees to take meditation lessons by paying for half the cost. A video of Bridgewater Capital headquarters plays on the screen above: water rushing over rocks, a Japanese garden, a row of trading screens. Meditation is the greatest gift I can give someone, said the hedge-fund manager, whose net worth is approximately $12.9 billion. He says he got into it when the Beatles made everyone aware of transcendentalism in the 60s. It is difficult to picture him bowing at the feet of the Maharishi. Less so Mario Batali, who is sitting next to him in his trademark non-threatening ponytail and Crocs. But Batali says he was introduced to TM by a friend he admired. Its like downloading music, he says. When someone really successful says, this is a really good tool I use, and you can have it for free, you do it.

The next panel begins with Arianna Huffington, who settles comfortably into a chair onstage. My mother was a very strong Greek voman, she begins, and immediately I go into what I assume is a meditative trance. I think of something a friend told me over the weekend. Im reading a lot of corporate self-help books," she said. "Because it really helps to know how assholes think. Earlier, one of the panelists had mentioned how General Motors and others in the corporate world were promoting TM among their employees. Perhaps transcendental meditation is or will soon become the new hobby of assholes? It would, after all, be a natural progression from the teachings of Sun Tzu and Machiavelli. When I come to, Huffington is hosting what looks like an extended live tryout for The View along with Dr. Peeke, the editor of More magazine, and Mary Schmidt Campbell, the former dean of NYU. What I vant is for this to be about vimmin, she was saying. Ve are all vimmin. And one great man, she adds, in acknowledgement of Sorkin, whose chair looks like it has actually been pushed off to the side. Anyway, thank you, he says finally, and after hustling the vimmin offstage, queues up a video featuring some of the at-risk people the David Lynch Foundation teaches meditation to with contributions from world-beating hippies. We were attacked, at this place called Buda, one war veteran says, choking back tears. The first night, I killed 14 people. OH. So thats what this is about.

It was the David Lynchiestof David Lynch productions: weird, confusing, haunting and indelible. When it ends, the lights come up. Sorkin looks vaguely shell-shocked. Music from Twin Peaks starts playing, and everyone files out in a meditative state.

What happened when I tried to be a mindful parent

When I had my son James, I tried to be mindful for the first time in my life.

I had practised yoga and meditation and read books on Buddhism and spiritual enlightenment before. I even did a 10-day juice detox during which I hallucinated colours while in a particularly intense reiki session. But I dont think much of it sank in. Id go through these phases of being present while half-starving on brown rice and spirulina tea and then return to eating canap dinners and moaning about my charming commitment-phobe boyfriend of the moment.

But as I found out fast after my son came shrieking into the world, there is really no way of caring for a newborn other than to surrender to the experience. As the old gospel song says, you gotta walk that lonesome valley for yourself aint nobody else gonna walk it for you.

Being alone all day with a baby, I quickly realized, is much easier if you can quiet your mind and go to the baby place in your brain. This is a state where you can spend several minutes, and eventually hours, simply laying on the floor and empathizing with your infant by feeling the sun on your face and occasionally thinking, Oooh, look how my fingers move. I think I might do a poo now.

Of course, many books will have you believe that to effectively care for a newborn you must spend your days sterilizing, pumping and swaddling according to a strict, incremented schedule, but I didnt do any of that. I just sort sloped around braless for a few months, silently communing with Jamess oceanic ego and changing an endless stream of diapers.

Eventually I went back to work and before I knew it Id turned into that mother the one in the supermarket lineup scrolling through work e-mails, snapping at the five-year-old to put down the candy NOW and nearly driving off leaving the baby in the cart.

So I started reading up on the practice of mindful parenting, which incorporates the techniques of mindfulness into family life. There was no shortage of material to choose from: In the past few months alone, several new books have come out on the subject. I started reading the daily tips on The Mindful Parent website and even signed James up for toddler yoga and meditation classes at my local wellness centre.

Much of the advice effective breathing techniques, strategies to still the racing mind, tips for existing in the moment rather than ruminating about the past or fretting about the future is stuff Ive read before. Cultivating stillness is difficult, but its also simple.

After all this theory, it was time for practice. I decided to start with one of the most basic exercises on The Mindful Parent blog. The idea is to gather your family together and suggest a minute of silence, and in this way, insert a pause at a time when everyone is otherwise caught up and engaged in the doing of things. How sweet, I thought, imagining my stepson Freddie and James clasping hands around the kitchen table and doing cleansing breaths.

I decided Saturday breakfast was my best window of opportunity. First, I made sure my English husband had gone out to buy the paper because, although he is very good at being silent and calm, he has an admittedly low tolerance for what he calls North American hippy bollocks. Once Freddie and James were finished munching their muesli, I announced in my best Mary Poppins voice that we were going to play a game called being silent for one minute. The boys stared at me in confusion, but I persisted. Doesnt that sound fun? So on the count of three we all say nothing and keep very still for one minute. Okay, one, two

Oklahomans losing weight on a biblically-inspired diet

Posted on: 10:00 pm, February 4, 2014, by Lance West, updated on: 09:46am, February 5, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY Ushering in the New Year often comes with hopes of a healthier, lighter you.

For some, the guide for dieting in 2014 is the Bible!

Jennifer Laws is among thousands of Oklahomans participating in a church fast.

The Daniel Fast inspires people to lose weight and gain spiritual enlightenment.

Laws said, Were a self-focused society. So, its all about what we can eat and when we can eat it.

Pastor Herbet Cooper, of Peoples Church, says the purpose is to shift focus from food to faith.

He said, Thats really what the Daniel Fast is all about. Giving up what we love, thats food, and certain types of food so we can spend more time in scripture and worship and hearing from God.

Most versions of the Daniel Fast are improvised because the Bible does not give detailed instructions.

For the most part, it includes raw vegetables, fresh fruits and whole grains.

Newly Launched University of Utah Religious Brain Project Seeks to Uncover Brain Activation During Religious and …

Contact Information

Newswise (Salt Lake City) A group of researchers at the University of Utah has launched a new project aimed at understanding how the brain operates in people with deep spiritual and religious beliefs.

The Religious Brain Project, which kicked off this week, aims to foster dialogue and understanding among people with diverse viewpoints on religion by learning how private religious experience may affect the social brain, and how religion may affect social behavior. The new project is a broad, multidisciplinary effort that engages many religious and scientific communities from the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, and Westminster College. The projects first initiative revolves around studying the brains of people who have returned from serving missions on behalf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jeff Anderson, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of neuroradiology at the University of Utah who is also the projects director, said the study is among the first of its kind in trying to uncover the neuroscience behind the brains of religious and spiritual people.

Religious and spiritual stimuli are among the most profound influences on behavior that exists. The neuroscience of spirituality, however, is almost completely unknown, said Anderson. We want to study what happens in the brain when someone has a spiritual experience.

Anderson is the principal investigator on the study along with University of Utah researchers Michael Ferguson and Jared Nielsen. In addition, Julie Korenberg M.D. ,Ph.D., a professor of pediatrics at the University of Utah, is consulting on the project. Researchers are currently in the process of recruiting 15 to 20 volunteers to participate in the study.

Participants who agree to participate in the study, once accepted as a research subject, would arrive at a University of Utah laboratory to have an MRI scan. During that procedure, researchers would provide them with an opportunity for scripture study, prayer, and other church-produced video content that would stimulate their brains. Eligible candidates must be healthy young men and women, ages 20 to 30, who have completed an LDS mission; are active, believing members of their church; and who think they might be able to experience spiritual feelings in the controlled environment of an MRI scanner.

While the projects first study focuses on members of the Mormon faith, research will extend to other religions as the initiative continues to grow, Anderson said.

Religious and spiritual experiences are among the most powerful influences on individuals and entire cultures. We are all shaped and defined by our experiences with religion. Yet the neuroscience of religious and spiritual feeling is almost completely unknown. We are seeking answers to fundamental questions, like What happens in the brain during religious or spiritual experiences? and How is the brain changed by religious experience? said Anderson. He added that researchers hope to find deeper discoveries related to evidence that religious people score higher on a range of pro-sociality metrics such as low criminality, donation to charity, and low divorce rates.

Kabbalah demystified

KEENE VALLEY If the only Kabbalah reference you have is Madonna, then Rabbi Moishe News talk, Kabbalah, is a must-hear Monday evening at the Keene Valley Library.

New, the spiritual leader of the Montreal Torah Center, will give an introduction in the world of Jewish mysticism with emphasis on the insights it offers to deal with 21st century challenges.

Kabbalah in Hebrew means to receive. The study of Kabbalah is a traditional teaching that is passed down on an elemental level.

The Torah, which is the Bible, was the written law as dictated by God and simply written down, said New, who is a sought-out lecturer on the topic and its relevance today.

When God gave the Torah to Moses, he also gave Four Keys, which unlock the meaning of the text. Quite frankly, the text on its own, in many places are ambiguous or contradictory and often not understandable. The reality is, it wasnt meant to be studied on its own.

The Torah is a divine, inscrutable text that continues to yield teachings, information and insight.

But it reveals by means of these four basic keys, New said. These keys are four levels of understanding the text. Level I is the simple level to make it intelligible enough on the simple, most pragmatic level. Whats the story and what is the Bible telling us to do? All these keys are defined further and have a whole system of rules and formulas by which the text yields insights and information.

DEFINING KEYS

Key I is understanding the literal meaning of the text.

Key II is a deeper level, New said. You apply the information from Key I. It yields allusions and hints that are not obvious in the text. Key III is often described as a very broad area. Its the psychological, legal and philosophical dimensions, the homiletic dimension of the text. The Talmud is devoted to understanding the text at Level III. Its much more complex.
