President Maithripala Sirisena in his message issued in view of Maha Shiva Rathri said that the prime expectation and the noble vision of all the religions is to promote existence of spiritually and morally cultured humans. All the rituals and celebrations performed by the humans are designed to recall those core values of the religious teachings.

He further stated that the religions provide great relief to the people in todays competitive world as their lives are becoming increasingly depressed. The religious way of life, which is more towards the spiritual awakening, can be considered as an essential ingredient for building a better society, he stated.

Religions provide great relief to the people in todays competitive world as their lives are becoming increasingly depressed. The religious way of life, which is more towards the spiritual awakening, can be considered as an essential ingredient for building a better society.

The Hindu devotees world over including Sri Lankan Hindus celebrate the Maha Shiva Rathri with the objective of enhancing their spiritual discipline.

I wish all Hindu devotees who celebrate the Maha Shiva Rathri Day, expressing their gratitude to Lord Shiva by fasting and keeping a night-long vigil at temples, may achieve their aspirations.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted in his message that as a much revered occasion that highlights the values of spiritual enlightenment and culture, the Maha Siva Rathri Day is deeply symbolic of co-existance and harmony among all and is also an ideal time for reflection.

Ron Nagle’s mind-bending art, like mini movies in sculpture form – Los Angeles Times

A lot has happened in the world since Ron Nagles last solo show in Los Angeles, which was in 2005.

A lot more has happened in his work, which is still intimate, whimsical and sensual, yet now asks big existential questions without suggesting that the answers might be simple, direct or logical. Titled Ice Breaker, Nagles mind-bending exhibition takes visitors to the heart of what it means to be alive to lifes ups and downs.

Risk and possibility are Nagles stock in trade. He serves them up in abundance at Matthew Marks Gallery, where 15 pint-size pieces are enshrined inside 15 glass cubes, each perched atop its own pedestal. Four more similarly scaled sculptures stand in four space-saving cubbyholes, each of which has been cut into the middle of each of the four walls.

Reliquaries come to mind. So do stashes.

The combination of religious veneration and illicit substances, or spiritual enlightenment and surreptitious bliss, takes stunning shape in Nagles subtly subversive works.The form of their presentation amplifies the content of individual sculptures.

That cooperative synergy flies in the face of the idea that abstract art is a high-minded affair that has nothing to do with the animal impulses of flesh and blood reality. The two collude beautifully in Nagles pieces of 3-D poetry. Each appeals to the lizard brain without overlooking the more sophisticated machinations of our cognitive hardware.

All sorts of stories can be read from the 77-year-old artists work. Many resemble landscapes, their super-saturated palettes, exquisitely textured surfaces and unnaturally streamlined formations recalling aquariums customized by connoisseurs of beauty. Others seem to be bookends that have evolved so radically and idiosyncratically that they no longer have partners that look anything like them.

None of Nagles sculptures sits still. Each occupies time as if it were a movie still, a thin slice of an animated cartoon, a documentary about microorganisms or a thriller in which something dreadful has just happened. Or is about to. Or both.

Sometimes the drama recalls that of a cell dividing in two (Message to Raphael) or a cell having second thoughts about splitting (French Stickler). More often, it involves a solitary being venturing, cautiously and curiously, into unknown territory (Sandmandia and Penniman).

Historical Land Mind, Witzelsucht and Cult Classic include two components or characters that approach each other, tentatively and gingerly. The sense of anticipation toys with mind.

Without stating anything explicitly, these pieces paint a pretty vivid picture of the world today, when questions about how individuals interact with neighbors and strangers are as charged and loaded as they have been in a long time.

Chef’s Table review: sit down for one episode, binge on three – Irish Times

Television has a terrible habit of handling our food. Cookery shows have long folded homeliness into coquettishness, chefs would rather be masters, even baking seems off. Is there any way we can leave it to cool?

There is no difference between cooking and pursuing Buddhas path, says Jeong Kwan. Now, thats more like it. Following a beatific Zen nun sequestered away in the Chunjinam Hermitage in the tree-covered mountains of Korea, the opening episode of Chefs Table (Netflix), now in its third series, offers itself as a kind of spiritual palate cleanser. You wont eat at Kwans unless you have embarked fully on the road to spiritual enlightenment, which still makes it an easier booking than Noma.

This is a refreshing change of pace for documentary maker David Gelbs show, a departure from the celebrity chefs and Michelin stars that recalls both the tranquil obsession of his early study, Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

Not that Kwan would abide anything as indulgent as raw fish. A nun who serves temple food (mind-calming and all-but-unadorned vegetarian meals) to monks and Korean students of cuisine (and, on occasion, to New Yorks restaurant critics at the invitation of celebrity chef, ric Ripert), if Kwan stands out among Gelbs sumptuously shot portraits its because she offers us a philosophy rather than a menu.

She envisions a world united through healthy and happy food and sees past, present and future harmoniously entwined in the act of cooking. If that makes a fetish of Kwans serenity, so be it she is filmed in quiet contemplation as frequently as in food preparation and you get the sense that Gelb, Ripert and food critic Jeff Gordinier worship her because she represents a blissful escape from industry, acceleration and ego, to a higher-plane routine: eat, pray, love.

Even with this gentle start, its easy to binge on Chefs Table; I sat down to watch one episode and stopped, barely satiated, after three. The Oedipal aggression of Russias crusader Vladimir Mukhin and the quirky passions of Los Angeleno cheese and carb-merchant Nancy Silverton make Kwan seem even more ascetic, with her elegantly unfurling lotus tea and shitake mushrooms bursting open like lilies. But it is heartening to see her erupt, occasionally, with earthly pleasure. Soy makes me excited just thinking about it, she beams, and her hand leaps to her heart. Ill have what shes having.

City streets and landmarks fold in on themselves, rotate and collapse on multiple axes, rather like Christopher Nolan's Inception or one of MC Escher's disorienting illustrations. Cumberbatch digs deep beneath the bruised skin of his character's overinflated ego, verbalizing the inner turmoil of a self-anointed god, who learns he is flawed and not entirely the master of his own destiny. McAdams is squandered in an undernourished role as the token love interest, but Swinton imposes herself on scenes so there is at least one strong female presence to undercut the raging testosterone.

Maslows hierarchy of needs is a well-known psychological principal that describes an individuals journey toward spiritual enlightenment. Gaining insight into your supply chain takes on many similar characteristics. It is a journey and not a destination. With apologies to Maslow, please read on.

At Maslows hierarchy-of-needs bottom is the idea of the things you need to survive. For manufacturers, this is basic information, such as whom are my suppliers and what are they shipping me. This is where you begin your journey. The applications that allow you to achieve this level may include your enterprise resource planning (ERP) application, potentially your product lifecycle management (PLM) system and other internally focused programs.

For large organizations, though, this can be difficult, especially if they have grown through acquisition. I heard of one very large, global food producer that found after it implemented an ERP, it was purchasing the same ingredient from the same supplier at eight different prices. So, depending on your size, getting out of this level can be non-trivial.

Once gaining systematic control over this basic information, it is time to gather more supply chain information. One typical project centers around supplier base rationalization. To that end, you need to have additional metrics beyond on-time delivery and invoicing to do this. In most cases, operations staff have institutional knowledge about their supply chain, but do not have the data to really know why it is. They know that things work well with Supplier A, but not so much with Supplier B, even though they provide the exact same material that meets specification.

To move through this phase, manufacturers can look at the following additional metrics to measure their supplier community:

With this information, you can rationalize your supplier base, achieve some pretty good financial returns and focus your efforts on achieving the next phase. Financial returns come from lower on-hand inventory, fewer supplier material-oriented disruptions, improved collaboration and improved pricing from higher volume contracts.

Upon rationalizing your supplier base, it is now time to really gain financial and operational benefits. Many of the financial benefits realized from the previous phase are one-time costs. Using the data that was amassed, manufacturers can begin to use the supplier data to significantly improve manufacturing processes.

This phase involves tying the information from the supplier community to ongoing operations to see how the various incoming material characteristics affect processes. What may be realized is that the information that you thought was relevant, while important, does not answer key questions. You may need to find other information to answer more complex questions about the relationships between materials and processes as it relates to yield and productivity.

Every business is different when it comes to these journeys. These results, though, come through data analysis driven through detailed root cause analysis techniques and can add quite a bit to your bottom line. They dont come overnight, but do have pretty interesting results as it relates to operational improvement.

People dont gain spiritual enlightenment overnight. Individuals need to understand what makes them tick and what is important to them. Your journey toward operational excellence invariably goes through the supply chain, and involves gathering and using data to gain insight into operational excellence.

Professor Richard White is returning to ECS, this time to speak about his new book, The Spiritual Guide, a very practical exploration without dogmatic answers to the questions that concern us all about the search for meaning and purpose. His starting point is the question, How can I live a more spiritual life, a life than can ultimately lead to enlightenment? The most important steps, he suggests, are staying open to suffering, living a generous life, cultivating mindfulness and wonder, and accepting death but affirming joy.

Richard J. White, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Philosophy Department at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he is also the Director of the MALS (Master of Arts in Liberal Studies) Program.

March 12- Robert Carey, Refugees and the Federal Government

In testimony before the Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest, Bob Carey said, Despite experiencing unimaginable hardships, violence, and oppression, refugees arrive in this country seeking opportunities, rather than handouts, to re-establish their self-sufficiency and to become productive, integrated members of their communities. HHS programs assist refugees and other vulnerable populations in doing just that.

Robert Carey will provide an overview of the United States Refugee Resettlement Program (USRP). His talk will include a description of the screening and admissions processes for refugees, the legal framework under which the program operates and the services provided to refugees who are admitted to the United States under the Refugee Act of 1980.

Bob was until recently the Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement within the US Department of Health and Human Services. In this role he was responsible for the office charged with the provision of a range of resettlement and support services to refugees, asylees, victims of torture and unaccompanied children through state governments and non-profit organizations across the US.

Nashville Season 5 Episode 8 Recap: Stand Beside Me – Parade

Here be spoilers and some of them will be in all caps.

Nashville, what were you thinking? The season started with the aftermath of a plane crash and now you have another major character ostensibly fighting for her life after a car crash? And you, Miss Connie Britton, with an inscrutable sphinxlike expression on your face last week when I asked you about the rumors about Rayna possibly leaving the show after the mid-season. You knew! You knew that our girl would escape the stalker only tookay, lets back up and recap first and then we can all get back to fussing and fretting (and possibly fuming, depending on what happens in the coming weeks).

The Breakfast Club:

Things are mostly copacetic as the episode opens with our darling Daphne whipping up pancakes and bacon for the family. Of course, Maddie comes in (storms in?) demanding something else to eat and announces that the security guards are back, leaving Daphne feeling betrayed that no one warned her. Apparently, Creepy Carl AKA The Stalker posted bail and is standing outside their home. Is this legal? they all wonder. Apparently, the restraining order requires him to stay 300 feet away from Rayna and company at all times hence his positioning himself 317 feet away from the house. Needless to say, Deacon is less than pleased and threatens to go all Wolverine to protect his family, but the security guards talk him down. By the next morning, Carl is gone, but Raynas had a sleepless night. And next week are the CMT Awards says Rayna in a rather meta moment.

Are You There God? Its Me, Daphne.

Still on the home front, Daphne has a tummy ache. Later on, we find out shes gotten her first period. Theres some uncomfortable moments between Daphne and Maddie (who is the worst big sister in the history of big sisters), Daphne and Rayna (who wins Adorable Mother of the Year) and Rayna and Deacon who wonders if they should throw Daph a period party. No. Just, no. Rayna settles for a familiar robins egg blue box from Tiffany with a moon gift for Daphne. I dont know about you, but after Game of Thrones Cersei being obsessed with Sansas flowering and poor Daphnes very public period storyline, Im well past very awkward TV puberty.

Sister Act:

Juliettes at church learning about Isaiah and his or our quest for inner peace, which apparently, Juliette is discovering during time spent with the choir. So much so that she tells Hallie she wants to do a gospel album with her and the choir, and asks if Hallie can arrange for them to speak.

Juliette and Hallie go to the church a bit later on to discuss the potential album. Theres a frisson of excitement initially, but then the questions get tougher and a bit snarkier. Were all taught a valuable lesson about the way different faiths perceive the importance of their music and Juliette is schooled in the history of gospel. Juliette is a star after all (she calls her music her art, so we know shes serious) and gets a little bit witchy with the congregation. Hallie gives her a sad, sad disappointed face.

The next day though, Juliette humbly apologizes to the group and bares her soul a bit. We hear once again that shes been a sinner and God works in mysterious ways and some other thoughts that feel a bit like platitudes, but seem to win over the crowd. Theyre moved by her words and agree to move ahead with the album as partners and equals. Expect a future scene in an upcoming episode comprised of a happy/clappy/singing/hand-wringing montage followed by a beatific looking Juliette and choir on an album cover.

Apparently, Juliettes come to Jesus moments have also inspired her to view Averys music more critically. Juliettes not loving his new song, and thinks it sounds too much like his old songs. The girl has a point, but one wonders if shes being overly critical in wake of her own musical spiritual enlightenment.

Much Ado About Something:

That Damien. Hes a real nogoodnik. Remember when he said he was leaving town and then texted Scarlett that he didnt leave town? Well, the two meet for lunch. I think theyre supposed to be all yearn-y, but I wasnt feeling it. Apparently, Scarlett was though, since she tells Damien shes all confused. Damien thinks they should remedy that by eating lunch and getting to know each other and then hell go back to his HOTEL ROOM. Okay, he didnt present it that way, but (with apologies to Chekhov*) all know that if theres a hotel room mentioned at the beginning of a scene its going to be put to use at some point. Then Scarlett and Deacon hang out and chew the fat about relationshipsjust your average chit chat. That inspires Scar to head over to Gunnars to, oh, I dont know, DUMP HIM. She gives him a pretty lukewarm speech about how she isnt sure about her feelings and that she feels something right now for Damien. And, oh, she also doesnt feel anything for Gunnar (ouch) and that scares her and shes not going to let her fears stop her anymore. Gunnars not having it and basically tells her to go ahead and have sex with Damien since thats what shes planning.

Okay, heres a momentary aside. The chemistry between Damien and Scarlett is so tepid, that I really did think she needed some time for herself. Maybe she wasnt having a Chaka Khan moment, but I really didnt think that the next scene would have her and Damien post-sexy time. Ill back up for a moment.

The next thing we know, Scarlett is in a bathrobe, looking pensively out the window. I honestly thought this would be the moment shed turn to Damien and say something like This is a mistake. I cant. I need time for myself. You know, basically what she just said to Gunnar. Instead, Damien walks out clad in a towel wheeling out a room service cart with waffles and champagne and other fancy foods to replenish their strength after their earlier exertions. Scarlett says she should leave. They both talk about how much fun it was. They mutually decide to have more fun. So, is this when we wave boy, bye to Gunnar and try on Darlett or Scarmien for size?

A Star is Born:

Maddie went to Claytons gig on her own, and man, is she good. Rayna and her entourage show up. Both mother and daughter are bopping their heads along to the music, so we know its good. And while Highway 65 might not have its next big thing, Ray Ray offers to maybe mentor and advise Clay on his music and career, but he has to promise to take care of Maddie. Awww. Cute. Do we sense a CMT spinoff a la The Voice sometime soon? Or maybe NashvilLa La Land?

All By Myself:

Rayna leaves to go to work. Her security guy does a short once over of the space and then heads out to sit in the car. So, wheres the around the clock security cameras? Why isnt someone stationed IN the office? Because you know whats coming. A STALKER IS COMING and hes been hiding out in the broom closet all night. Hes got a great big knife and comes up on Rayna while her eyes are closed and shes listening to some music (with all the lights in the office off, because you know, its not creepy enough).

Poor Rayna. She tries to escape and stalker guy tries to calm her down, saying he doesnt even know why he brought a knife and that its not sharp. No, but its HUGE and SCARY. Rayna then quickly shifts into calm mode and tries to talk the stalker talk. The woman should moonlight as a hostage negotiator, shes that calm. So apparently, his name is really Wayne and he was abused as a child. He and Rayna bond over dysfunctional families; his father abused him, but Raynas dad murdered her mother when she was only 12, and shes not a psychopath, so she totally wins this round. Also, she channels her pain into music while he channels his pain into stalking, so Raynas really in the lead here. Related/unrelated, did every single character on Nashville go through tremendous childhood trauma?

Anyway, while Raynas talking, shes secretly dialing 911. Wayne the Stalker hears and tries to grab her as she runs to the door. The police department calls Rs security guy and suddenly everyone rushes into H65 simultaneously. Guns are raised and so is the knifeto Raynas neck. Rayna looks terrified but keeps telling Wayne not to give in to the bad part of himself and just when I thought that it would drag out into a cliffhanger episode, Wayne apologizes and.lets her go. I kind of thought there would be a bit more to it. Wayne stabbing himself or trying to commit death by police, but it ends there.

OR DOES IT?

The police think Rayna should go to the hospital, but she just wants to go home. Safely tucked into the back of a police car Rayna calls Deacon and through her tears tells him something awful has happened, but shes okay. He says Come home, baby. And I got all melty, until we see from our peripheral vision (which cant really be peripheral vision if were facing the screen, but I was a bit traumatized, so be gentle with me) a car is speeding straight at Rayna and directly into the passenger side and BOOM. Glass shatters and Rayna is thrown forward.

Nashville, I kind of hate you right now. With the rumor mill running overtime with hints that Connie Britton wont be returning to the show, is it even possible that Rayna will die? Or will she come back with a new face and played by Elizabeth Banks or Julie Bowen?

In the meantime, I think we should all be lighting incense or candles and baking casseroles to bring to Deacon. The man will need a lot of comforting in the tough weeks ahead.

*Chekhovs Gun is a plot device shared by playwright and short story writer Anton Chekhov in a letter to a fellow playwright. He wrote One must never place a loaded rifle on the stage if it isnt going to go off. Its wrong to make promises you dont mean to keep. In other words, if theres a gun on stage in scene one, youd better use it at some point in the story. In the case of this episode, Damiens hotel room was announced, so we knew it would probably see some action.

Remembering Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s spiritual legacy on his 181st birthday – YourStory.com

What is it about the divine that awes us so? How is it the one untouched space of a higher consciousness that no amount of scientific data can even try to penetrate? Is it simply a religious superstition cascaded down the ages or the fear to divulge into the unknown?

However, every once in several decades, a man or woman is born in this state of higher consciousness and with age, they have the option to either harbour and nurture it deeply or dismiss it for the flashy decadence of the world. But these yogis or mystics have often been thought of as middle-men, chains between the mortal and the divine, with one foot in each world.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was one such yogi who, from an extremely early age, responded to a greater calling. Born into a family of Brahmins in 19th century Bengal, as Gadadhar Chatterjee, Ramakrishnas disciples included influential names like Swami Vivekananda, Kaliprasad Chandra, and Sri Keshab Chandra Sen, who took his teachings to the world-stage.

Vivekananda, one of historys greatest leaders and social activists, built a series of homes across the country as a tribute to his mentor, known as The Ramakrishna Mission. In a letter he wrote to Alasinga Perumal, he stated his absolute awe and intimate respect for his guru, saying, This man had in fifty-one years lived the five thousand years of national spiritual life and so raised himself to be an object-lesson for future generations.

Ramakrishnas official patronage of the divine and his claim to have been visited by the Goddess Kali herself were recorded back when he presided as priest at the famous Dakhineshwar Temple, created by Rani Rashmoni back in 1855. Soon after this, his powerful persona and call for a simplistic religion a complete contrast to the variegated and complex practices of other Brahmins in those times attracted dozens of disciples from all kinds of social backgrounds in colonial India.

Later, Ramakrishna and his wife, Saradamoni Mukhopadhyay, endorsed the idea of a single unified religion for the world that of God without the confinements of labels like Hindu, Muslim, or Christian. To understand this almost monotheistic religion, he took to practising both Islam, where he claimed to have experienced a vision of a radiant white bearded man, as well as Christianity, where he had a vision of Madonna and Child and of Jesus himself.

Having completed all 64 sadhanas of tantras under the guidance of a female sage, Bhairavi Brahmani, learning the inner mechanics of the Vaishnav faith from Guru Jatadhari during 1864, and being initiated into Sanyaas (the formal life of an ascetic) during 1865 from Monk Totapuri, Ramakrishna used his own experience and enlightenment of the world as a lesson to his disciples across the world.

Cemetery theft a low blow

EDITOR: A week ago I was at Sonoma Mountain Cemetery for the blessing of a dear friends ashes. The family brought over a large shiny tin vase filled with lots of Protea flowers sent by the deceaseds close friend from Hawaii. The vase was placed by the wall where my friends ashes were stored. Five days later the vase and flowers were gone stolen. I know the cemetery isnt guarded so perhaps leaving something so beautiful was too much of a temptation, but isnt it a rather low blow to steal flowers from the cemetery? Its a big disappointment that such a theft occurred at this difficult time of mourning for a Sonoma family, almost in their own back yard.

Unsane clown presidency

EDITOR: How do you fight a shape-shifter? This is a metaphorical question, meaning: How do you combat people who seem to have no ethics at all, at least in the political realm people who will say and do anything to further their toxic agenda? For example, if the Senates long-established procedural rules interfere with Republicans agenda, they change the rules; in other cases, they simply ignore them.

Obama and the other Democrats, who tried to maintain at least some ethical standards, were at a definite disadvantage while under near-constant attack by those who see ethics as a joke, a characteristic of weaklings.

Someone said recently that Trump knows little about ethics because he never sat on a board. Perhaps if he had sat on a board with nails in it, in partial imitation of yogis lying on a bed of nails, he might have gained some spiritual enlightenment and become kind, compassionate, generous and benevolent. But no, probably not; hes too far gone in narcissistic, antisocial and paranoid personality disorders. Or, in other words, a common, garden-variety, egocentric loony who has only a snarling acquaintance with the peaceful, loving part of the human race.

Some psychiatrists say Trump should not be called insane; so lets consider a slightly different word: unsane. I would call unsane, or unstable, anyone whose greed, lack of compassion and insecurity lead to harmful acts. A sane person is in harmony with the world.

Remember Khojaly!

EDITOR: Feb. 26 of this year will mark a quarter century since the Khojaly Massacre, Europes first genocidal atrocity since World War II.

On the night of Feb. 26, 1992, the Armenian Armed Forces, supported by the 366th infantry regiment of the Russian army, attacked the town of Khojaly in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. Estimated 613 fleeing residents of the town, including 106 women and 63 children, were chased and brutally murdered by the Armenian fighters. Hundreds more went missing, over A thousand received permanent health damage, 1,275 were taken hostage, and over 150 children lost one or both parents.

Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the New York Times, numerous other media and rights watchdogs documented the atrocity. Armenian field commander, Monte Melkonian, provided a shocking witness account of the killing fields near Khojaly, reproving his fellow fighters of the war crime. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan admitted that it was an act of revenge against Azerbaijanis. Yet, the Armenian government and Armenian-American lobby continue denying the responsibility of the Armenian forces for the tragedy.

As the United States mediates a peaceful settlement to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, recognizing its largest atrocity is an important step toward reconciliation. In the recent years, 20 U.S. states and many countries recognized the Khojaly Massacre. Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance in January 2015, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin highlighted Khojaly among the genocidal acts that the international community failed to prevent.

On behalf of all Azerbaijani Americans and friends of the Azerbaijani Society of America (ASA), I call upon Sonomas elected officials to recognize the 25th anniversary of the Khojaly Massacre via public statements and legislative resolutions.

SVH: The definition of community

EDITOR: Im finding it hard to believe that its been almost 11 years since I was successfully treated for cancer at Sonoma Valley Hospital. I was preliminarily diagnosed by my GP, who sent me over to the hospital for tests all of which were done the following day and analyzed the day after that. Almost unheard of. Surgery was subsequently scheduled for the following week and a second surgery the week after that. Expeditious personal attention and care that can be given by a local hospital cant be matched from a distance.

When I checked into the hospital, my intake was done by someone I knew from hiking excursions. As I was wheeled into the operating room, I discovered that my neighbor was the head nurse. Once I was back in my room recovering, other staff members, who I knew from the community, stopped by to check on me. While I was there friends were able to walk (or drive a short distance) over to wish me well. Since I have no family in the area this support and convenience were very important to me. I cant put into words how comforting it was to feel that they all had my back. For me this was the definition of community and underscored the importance of having a first-rate hospital in my back yard.

Its hard to exaggerate the significance of having a hospital right here. The emergency room is absolutely essential to the viability of our Valley. To maintain the level of health care available to us locally we need the parcel tax. I hope you will join with me in voting yes on Measure B on March 7.

Review: Three Unrelated Short Plays, Theatre N16 – A Younger Theatre

If you are looking for spiritual enlightenment from your cultural excursions then please do look a little further; Three Unrelated Short Plays is light hearted and fun, but not a lot else not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that.

Written by James Messer, part of the Blank Tin Theatre Company, these three 20 minute sketches certainly keep you entertained. Advertised as absurd, the plays dont disappoint on this front, but expect more of a freak-show than Beckett. The opening piece, named The Stuggardt Syndrome, depicts the predicament of two kidnaped people and their amateur kidnappers coming to terms with the fact that none of them knows the first thing about kidnapping.

This moves into the second piece One Scotch in which three men try and have a spiritual experience, not through a pilgrimage or meditation, but through an extremely heavy drinking game. This is as farcical as it sounds. The jokes here are perhaps the most teeth-clenching, but the overall motions of the scene are developed well and the idea is amusing, with a beautiful rendition of some Joan Osborne. The audience is also forced to come to terms with a new existential question and a possible answer to the problem of theodicy What if God was a dick?

The last skit, entitled Dr Deathzo, is certainly the most random part of the trio. An average-Joe named Kevin comes is confronted with the fact he turns into a super-villain on Saturdays, but, to his chagrin, hes not a very good one. Meanwhile, Assorted Props Girl and her sidekick, Tape Boy, come to save the day. This play descends into a tongue-in-cheek elucidation on the importance of friendship and, it must be said, it is only a loosely funny one. Instead of ending on this slight droop, it might have been wiser to end on one of the slightly punchier first sketches as the ending doesnt do justice to the rest of the piece.

The self-conscious scene changes must also be mentioned. Obviously, the staging of three totally different plays poses issues, especially in the limited space. This is managed very well, however, through amusing signage and distracting spectacles. It could be argued these two moments were in fact the strongest part of the production.

All in all, Three Unrelated Short Plays is an amateur fringe production and it would be wise not to expect too much from it. Luckily, however, it is short enough to make it worth the time invested. It is genuinely funny in parts, but the humour can be broadly contained within the realms of self-mockery, caricatures, and physical comedy.

Tu B’Shvat Thoughts: Bringing Mysticism Back – New Voices

When Tu Bshvat comes around, I roll up my sleeves and prepare myself for the ritual tree planting, garden weeding, and litter collecting that has marked my Tu Bshvats of the past. My less observant, modern Jewish community taught me the holidays message of social justice in concrete terms: We plant trees, trees grow, trees make the world a better place.

Far from what I learned in Hebrew school, I found solace in these spiritual explanations, inspiring me to want to push my less observant Jewish community to embrace more mystical interpretations of Jewish ritual to retain our connection to other spiritual communities in an empowering, uniquely Jewish way.

For me, there was a disconnect between the spiritual understanding of Tu Bshvat and my concrete understanding of the holiday, built on the rationalist and humanist values of my modern Jewish community. In contrast, the Hazon Haggadah begins with a coy nod to the wonder built into all Jewish ritual. It quotes Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (zl) saying, There is neither worship or ritual without a sense of mystery. This acknowledgment of uncertainty and wonder stands in contradiction to the more material descriptions of Tu Bshvat to which I was accustomed.

While willing to focus on ideas of community and social justice, my community is nervous to discuss the less tangible and more spiritual elements of Judaism like G-d and mysticism. For this materially-rooted community, its more comfortable to teach children concrete actions like planting a tree than it is to encourage them to explore more uncertain aspects of Tu Bshvat. However, this trepidation to address the unknown left me and likely other Jewish millennials with a spiritual craving that feels undernourished by my Jewish communitys rational approach.

I understand that this philosophy didnt emerge in a vacuum. My communitys lean towards the rational, as opposed to the spiritual, is a product of the Haskalah (enlightenment) in 19th century Europe. The Haskalah movement wanted to deemphasize the authority of kabbalah and later Hasidism by infusing Judaism with a rational, humanistic perspective. Ultimately, my Jewish communitys desire to center Tu Bshvat around universal values like environmentalism is a product of the Haskalahs reforms.

My community needs to realize embracing Jewish mysticism doesnt mean sacrificing universalism.We do not need to shun our own spiritual tradition in order to fit into our broader society or feel entwined in a global community. Religious mysticism exists in many faiths, and we should recognize how our mystical practices connect us to a diversity of spiritual communities.

Plus, rationalism has its dangers. Often Western societal elites heralded the push towards rational modernism in order to better control the population of the countries they headed. For example, prior to the 1910 revolution in Mexico, the elites of the country pushed for the population to adopt modern ideas that would show an allegiance to the United Statess system of thought. Meanwhile, missionaries during the colonization of Africa often stamped out the local populations spiritual and religious practices in order to organize the people under a Western thought process that the colonizers could control. These missionaries feared that a strong, local spiritual tradition could empower the people to rise against their oppressors. Thus the process of adopting rational, modern belief systems has historically been tied tied to Western imperialism and colonization. By holding on to spiritual practice, we can push against the dominant ideas of Western society and join a community of people who are attempting to retain their communal power through spirituality.

The Hazon Haggadah continues its explanation of the holidays mysticism with a brief history of the spiritual origins of Tu Bshvat. As the story goes, Jewish exiles from Spain found their way to Tzvat and began imbuing Tu Bshvat with its mystical qualities.

As I look to my own Jewish community and feel frustrated with its disconnect from the spiritual elements of our tradition, this story stands as a reminder that, in all times in Jewish history, groups of people have needed to invigorate Jewish practice with renewed spirituality. The fact that Hazon, a non-Orthodox organization, put out such a spiritually imbued Tu BShvat haggadah is a good sign that the less observant Jewish community is beginning to embrace mysticism once again. As we look out on the trees we planted last week and and remember the delicious taste of the seven species, I hope that we can all plant seeds of wonder, mystery, and mysticism in our growing understanding of our rich spiritual tradition.

You might not expect someone who insults people for a living to have a lot of close friends. Comedian Lisa Lampanelli, however, says she values the relationships she has with her friends and family over fame or wealth.

The stand-up comic was driving to a spiritual retreat when interviewed by The Detroit News last month in advance of her Friday performance at MotorCity Casino Hotel.

Once a month or so I go for a week to this place in the Berkshires and I take different kinds of classes, workshops, mediation, she said. Im doing one called Hunger, Hope and Healing next week because I wrote a play on food and body image and I think it helps me figure out eating and food, and emotionally eating and why people do it and it helps me personally and with my play.

Lampanelli, 55, calls herself an insult comic and spends the majority of her stand-up routine making fun of the audience and herself. In real life, though, she says she lives for self-development and self-discovery.

She organizes game nights with her friends and elderly mother (who loves Apples to Apples and Catchphrase).

If you ask me whats the most important thing, thats it, she said. I dont need any more fame. I dont need any more money. I dont need any more achievements. I dont feel that adds to your self worth unless you really believe youre worthy.

But this enlightenment doesnt mean Lampanelli is going soft with her act. Shes still the Queen of Mean, and no ones race or sexual orientation is off-limits at her shows. She says lately, though, during a question and answer period at the end of her shows, shes been giving a lot of advice.

I talk about my divorce ... my weight loss and my surgery, and people ask me advice about life which I love because Im under the impression that I know more than everybody in the universe, she joked. Im like Dr. Phil with a ton of estrogen, but not that much because Im goin through menopause. I got really happy a few months ago because some girl who I told to break up with her meth-head boyfriend broke up with him the next time I was there. I was like oh my God, I changed a life.

Another topic that has come up lately during her post-show Q&A is Donald Trump. Lampanelli was on season 12 of Celebrity Apprentice. After raising $130,000 for Gay Mens Health Crisis of New York City, she was fired by Trump late in the season.

He never bothered me, she says of the president. He never rubbed me the wrong way during The Apprentice. When I roasted him twice he was totally hilarious, had a great sense of humor.

Personally I dont have a problem with him ... but obviously our views are completely different and diametrically opposed. I still feel like Im friendly enough with him where I can do jokes about him and everybody else. Hillary doesnt escape jokes from me, either.

Im not a political comic. I never cared about politics in my life and now that Ive sort of had this human interaction with him I think its fun to talk about the different thing thats happened. That makes my stand-up show a lot more fun for me because I can kind of tell all.

Nafshenu: Cherry Hill Families Launch Non-Denominational Approach to Jewish Faith, Culture – NJ Pen

In an effort to counteract dwindling numbers among members of the Jewish faith in the tri-county area, Rabbi Larry Sernovitz and a handful of Cherry Hill families want toforge a new, inclusive congregation.

What does it mean to be Jewish?

To some, its a question of ethnic identity; of cultural traditions preserved from a global diaspora through generations of life in America.

To others, its a question of religious doctrine; of pursuing spiritual enlightenment according to rites and rituals that date back thousands of years.

But to Rabbi Larry Sernovitz of Cherry Hill, the most pertinent answer to that question isnt even what Judaism is in 2017, in South Jerseybut what it might become in the next decade.

In the United States, affiliation with organized religion has been steadily declining, and the numbers continue to trend downward as the millennial generation surpasses the baby boomers in population outgrowth. To Sernovitz, the question becomes one of how deeply that drop-off affects members of the Jewish faith.

Thats why he and 15 other families have founded Nafshenu, a new congregation intended to be more responsive to the circumstances and needs of Jewish people in South Jersey in a social, political, and spiritual context. Translated from Hebrew, nafshenu means our souls. Its a name Sernovitz said reflects a vision to forge a contemporary approach to questions of faith and cultural identity.

People want their religion to be transformative, he said. They want it to be responsive to their hearts and souls. We all have that sense of soul. The understanding was, Lets meet that need.

Sernovitz points to a 2013 population survey of some 3,000 residents of the tri-county area conducted by the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jerseyasoutlining some of the concerns with the status quo. The research concluded that affiliation with a synagogue peaks among those aged 45 to 59, at 53 percent, but drops off sharply thereafter, to around 35 percent.

Opportunities to improve those numbers exist among the 18-44 segment, but the survey revealed that more unmarried or childless people in that age demographic report feeling unwelcome at their houses of worship, which largely cater to the rites and rituals around the indoctrination of children in their faith.

Others reported being deterred from participation by concerns of finance or geography. These are all stumbling blocks that, to Sernovitz, indicate an opportunity to offer something different.

Religion by nature has become transactional, he said. Its a fee-for-service [model]. It was supposed to be about a sense of meaning and purpose, [but]then it became about the business. When its transactional, were not building the community. When we value each and every member, every soul is critical.

To start, Sernovitz said religions need to avoid being pediatricthat is, hyper-focused on the needs of families with young childrenbecause when the kids are done, the adults are done too, because they were never engaged in the first place. For those whose Judaism was contingent upon bnei mitzvah training, once their rites of adulthoodhave been completed, there is little to anchor them in a culture that has obstacles of ritual, language, and philosophy before questions of denominational politics even arise, he said.

A lot of Judaism is a performance instead of a prayer; its music you might not be able to sing to, readings that you cant connect with in a meaningful way, Sernovitz said. People dont want to be sung to, they want to participate.

We understand that people ebb and flow, and they come in and out, and its good for different times in their lives, he said.

But ultimately, if you found a sense of community thats organic, and you feel that you count, that youre validated, youre going to stay.

To that end, Nafshenu will be built upon four core components: spirituality, cultural education, social justice, and community.

The reforms the group will pursue are inspired by the work of Rabbi Sharon Brous of IKAR in Los Angeles, California, which models a come-as-you-are approach Sernovitz believeshas a better chance of connecting worshipers with a meaningful, profound Jewish education for kids and adults.

We want to meet people where they are, he said. Lets let them create the moment that they want to so that Jewish learning is relevant to their lives.Were going to be teaching our kids conversational Hebrew so they can know the words and transfer it over when theyre reading a prayer.

Returning to the social justice roots of the Jewish faith is another key tradition that Sernovitz said Nafshenu will emphasize, both in advocating for its people and in forming partnerships with interfaith coalitions to advance broader progressive agendas. He said a fear of losing the support of financial donors has handcuffed many synagogues from more publicly engaging with issues of political relevance to the faith.

Judaism is based on a prophetic tradition, and these prophets werent the most well-liked people because they spoke truth to power, Sernovitz said. From that prophetic tradition, we believe we need to speak out, and thats in partnership.

Immigration, education, womens rights, reproductive rightsso many of the issues that are out there today, were afraid to talk about. Tikkun olamrepair of the worldits not just for the Jewish community itself, its for the world.

Sernovitz believes that larger, global view of Judaism as one in a continuum of faiths, all motivating towards a stronger local, national, and international community, is what will also help Nafshenu build strong connections with its membership as individual people.

He said many disaffected members of his faith testify that their religious experiences have been microcosmic of their larger social experience of feeling isolated, judged, and disposable. Instead, he wants his congregation to form an organic community that people join not because theyre getting a service, but because they want to be part of a community that stands for something.

This is not a reform congregation, Sernovitz said. This is non-denominational, egalitarian, and progressive. Were entering a world that I believe is post-denominational, and it has to be.

Spirituality and ethnic identity dont have to be exclusive, he said. In a world of independent thinking, everybodys on a different journey. Wouldnt it be nice to take the mask off, to be authentic and who we are, and to live a life that weve always dreamed of living?

That search has been the dominant theme of a number of the families who comprise the first families of Nafshenu, including Risa and David Podolnick.

The couple both grew up in pretty traditional, conservative Jewish homes, Risa Podolnick said, and after having spent 20 years looking for a synagogue that felt right to them, have still been left wanting.

I think a lot of people arent participating in their synagogues, or are leaving, or are unaffiliated, because they cant find a place where they can call their Jewish home, Risa Podolnick said.

We want to make this a community where you feel good about why you go.

Jonathan and Ronita Simon both grew up in Cherry Hill, albeit in very different cultures: Jonathan is Jewish, and Ronita is Bengali Hindu. When the two married 10 years ago, they stepped outside of familiar (and familial) boundaries, but decided to rear their children with a foot in both worlds. Aftertheir son, Judah, aged out of his Hebraic preschool, Ronita Simon said the couple felt like we didnt have as much of a connection to their synagogue, and have struggled to interpolate their religious and cultural identities.

Culturally, I was raised in a strong community, but not so much religiously, Ronita Simon said. We want to feel welcomed. Having my son, who is mixed, it couldnt be more important.

Jonathans brother, psychiatrist Jeffrey Simon, said his Jewish upbringing informed his pursuit of faith through various travels. Worshiping at synagogues from New Orleans to Vermont,he found the key to their success was finding ways to be accommodating of people who entered the faith from various perspectives.

Wed rather have you with us than without, Jeffrey Simon said.

In 2017, that means a different approach, a different way of thinking, a different way of blending tradition with modern concept and modern family.

Id much rather be a part of a faith that welcomes people into the community rather than boxing them out, he said.

For people like Shera Goldstein, opportunities to participate in social justice causes are a determining factor in her faith. She credits a strong youth upbringing in her synagogue as having instilled those virtues of worldliness in her from childhood.

In order to be living the life that youre supposed to live by the Torah, youre supposed to do good in the world, Goldstein said. Its important for my daughter to see that she can give back to the community. I really need a religious leader who lives by the things we talk about.

Ron Adelman, who was raised in a conservative Jewish tradition and said hes always been affiliated with a synagogue, worries that the the non-orthodox community just seems to be spinning its wheels in its treatment of young people.

My interest in going forward is to establish a Jewish consciousness that includes my children and my grandchildren, and children of people in the community going forward, Adelman said.

Focusing primarily on prayer and ritual has become more irrelevant to young people. They cant connect with the literal version of prayer.

I have no doubt that there will be sort of a half-life of Jewish enthusiasm and it will diminish by 50 percent in its intensity in each generation, he said.

We have to make Judaism relevant, and we have to inspire people. I dont feel rejected by other synagogues, I just want more. Because were all part of a community is what makes this exciting. Were multifaceted, and I think thats the beauty of this.

Were all here to come together to bring those relationships and talents and finding something that will bring relevance and meaning and purpose in a world that is sometimes lacking and soulless, Sernovitz said. Where weve come from defines our perspective, but it allows us to move forward and define who we want to be.

Nafshenu is still looking for a permanent headquarters in Cherry Hill, but Sernovitz has a vision for the space his congregation will create, which he said will include educational spaces for adults and kids to engage in experiential Judaism, an inclusive, nontraditional prayer space, and areas dedicated to the advancement of social justice causes.

The group is targeting a July 1 opening with services leading up to High Holy Days in September.

Were not a synagogue, Sernovitz said. We offer opportunities, but were not doing it in a traditional way. Were looking to complement, not compete. Were looking to fill a void. Everybodys welcome. Come in, come through our doors, be inspired.

If you look at me, you would think I am stoned, though I have never touched a substance in my life. We need to understand, whatever chemicals we put into the system, essentially it can only ignite something within us. It cannot by itself cause too much to us. Only those kind of things which will put you to sleep totally, like an anesthetic they work in a different way. They completely knock you down. But all the others, which have some sense of experience, they only stimulate something within you.

If you know how to stimulate yourself, you can sit in great pleasure, and it costs neither money or health. And you can be super-alert, such that you can go without sleep for many days. Otherwise, you have to put in something from the outside. Shiva was high, no question, but by what, is another matter. He is not using substance, he is the substance!

A few years ago, an Israeli scientist and his team discovered what they called a bliss molecule in the human body. They found that in the human brain, there are cannabis receptors naturally present. When they looked into why this was so, they found that at certain times, the human body actually produces its own narcotic. It doesnt need a stimulus from outside to create bliss.

Alcohol, drugs and other stimulants cause addictions, health problems and reduce your awareness. But you can activate your own body in such a way that you can be blissful all the time no hangover! In fact, it is highly beneficial for your health and wellbeing. This chemical was named by the scientist as anandamide. Ananda, in Sanskrit, means bliss.

Even if Shiva smoked I dont think he did can you do all the other things he does? Can you sit for three months, unmoving?

This happened: Adi Shankara was walking somewhere with a bunch of his disciples trotting behind him. Then he saw a liquor shop outside a village. In those days, and even just a few decades ago, the drink shops were only outside the village. They were never allowed into the village. Nowadays, it is right next to your house, in front of your childs school and all over the place.

Shankara went, took a whole pitcher of toddy (a homebrew liquor), drank it and walked on. The disciples behind him started discussing: Our guru himself is drinking? Why are we missing out on the whole thing? They kept arguing amongst themselves till they came to the next village.

There, they just ran into the toddy shop and had a few drinks. Shankara just walked on. Another village came. Shankara walked into the village blacksmith's shop where there was some molten iron. He picked that up, took a drink and walked on.Now his disciples got the point.

People think they become spiritual by smoking marijuana and feeling a little smoked out. Getting hazy is not life that happens in death. When you are dying, when you are a little conscious-unconscious, life is hazy. But when you are alive, clarity is the most important thing. And clarity can be intoxicating. In being super-alert, there is another kind of intoxication.

That is the way. Not with weeds. Today, the entire world is talking about marijuana, but there is substantial research to show that there your IQ drops if you smoke regularly for a certain period of time. You will never retrieve that intellect again.

You dont even have to go through any research. Just look at those who are generally on this. If you see them, they act peaceful. But if you dont give them their substance for two days, you will see how cranky they become. You have to give them the daily dose so they can be nice and peaceful.

You will be peaceful when you are hazy, but that is of no value. If you have found that your brain can do something worthwhile, then that is not the way to go. There is nothing spiritual about any chemical.

Though in our day-to-day life we refer to other people, as separate from us, this is only a mental viewpoint, convenient for functioning in our daily lives. From a higher state of consciousness, all are one, and the terms I, you, he, she and they are not real. There is only the One Spirit, Consciousness, which seems to manifest in limitless forms and ways.

The concept of nonduality is not a strange or weird idea. It can be experienced and lived right here and now, no matter where you are, and without attracting anybodys attention. It is an inner state of consciousness, not an external state.

It is possible to realize the meaning of nonduality and attain spiritual awakening and enlightenment in an ashram or a cave, and it is also equally possible to do so while living in a town or city with family and job. It is all a matter of strong desire, inner attitude and dediction.

Most people cannnot afford to live a secluded life in order to meditate and lead a purely spiritual life. Most of us need to work and support a family, and can therefore devote only a part of the day to spiritual pursuits. The good news is that we can practise meditation and realize our true being, without abandoning our present style of living. With proper planning, it is possible to find the time and the energy.

Meditation and walking on the spiritual path can be practised anywhere, without making external changes in your life. You can stay with your job and family, and still make spiritual progress and realize the true meaning nonduality.
