GREENBELT, Md., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Astronauts on the International Space Station 240 miles above the Earth have captured a stunning image of Russian volcanoes, NASA says.

In the image, the snow-covered peaks of several volcanoes on the central Kamchatka Peninsula are seen poking their heads above cloud cover obscuring the surrounding lowlands, NASA's Earth Observatory staff reported.

A plume of steam and ash plume is visible extending from the summit of the 9,500-foot Bezymianny volcano.

Also visible are the much taller 15,000-foot Kamen volcano and the 15,800-foot Kliuchevskoi volcano.

Kliuchevskoi is Kamchatka's most active volcano, last erupting in 2011.

This region of Russia is known for its volcanic activity and eruptions are relatively frequent.

When the image was taken the ISS was about 240 miles above the Sea of Okhotsk and more than 430 miles to the southwest of the volcanoes, NASA said.

Hoosier astronaut Space Station command

ALMATY, Kazakhstan Three astronauts touched down in the dark, chilly expanses of central Kazakhstan onboard a Soyuz capsule Monday after a 125-day stay at the International Space Station.

NASA's Sunita Williams, Russian astronaut Yury Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide of Japan's JAXA space agency landed at 07:56 a.m. local time (0156 GMT) northeast of the town of Arkalyk.

Eight helicopters rushed search-and-recovery crew to assist the crew, whose capsule did not parachute onto the exact planned touchdown site due to a minimal delay in procedures.

With the departure of the outgoing crew, NASA astronaut Kevin Ford has taken command of the space station, where he remains with Russian colleagues Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin. They will be joined next month by NASA's Tom Marshburn, Chris Hadfield of the Canadian Space Agency, and Russia's Roman Romanenko.

The Soyuz is the only means for international astronauts to reach the orbiting laboratory since the decommissioning of the U.S. shuttle fleet in 2011.

Williams, Malenchenko and Hoshide undocked from the space station Sunday at 1023 GMT to begin their return to earth.

Around 28 minutes before touchdown, the three modules of the Soyuz craft separated, leaving the 2.1-meter tall capsule to begin its entry into orbit.

A series of parachutes deployed to bring the capsule to gentle floating speed.

Winds pulled the descent module on its side in the snowy terrain, which is a common occurrence, but the crew was nonetheless swiftly hoisted out by the recovery crew and lifted onto reclining chairs and swaddled in blankets to shield them from the 12 Fahrenheit degree (-11 Celsius degree) temperature.

The chairs are designed to afford the astronauts comfortable acclimatization after months of living in gravity-free conditions.

Space Station Astronauts Land Safely On Earth

A veteran astronaut crew representing the United States, Russia and Japan is returning back to Earth aboard a Soyuz capsule today (Nov. 18) to wrap up a four-month mission to the International Space Station.

The Soyuz spacecraft undocked from the space station at 5:26 p.m. EST (2126 GMT) as both ships sailed 256 miles (412 kilometers) above northwestern China. The Soyuz is due to land on the Central Asian steppes of Kazakhstan at 8:53 p.m. EST (0153 Nov. 19 GMT) to return American astronaut Sunita Williams of NASA, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide to Earth after 127 days in space.

The trio will make a rare night landing when their Soyuz TMA-05M capsule lands in Kazakhstan. At landing time, it is expected to be a cold night with an hour to go before sunrise, NASA officials said. You can watch the Soyuz landing live here via SPACE.com's NASA TV feed.

"Good luck, guys," American astronaut Kevin Ford, who now commands the station's Expedition 34 crew, as the Soyuz departed.

Williams, who commanded the station's Expedition 33 mission, turned control of the outpost over to Ford on Saturday (Nov. 17). The command change marked the start of the station's Expedition 34 mission by Ford and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Evgeny Tarelkin, who arrived at the station in late October. "I think we've left this ship in good shape and I'm honored to hand it over to Kevin," Williams told Ford before presenting gifts to Expedition 34 crew in an emotional exchange. "As you can see, we have a great crew up her, us who are going home very shortly and the ones who are taking over. The ship's in good hands."

Williams, Malenchenko and Hoshide launched into orbit in mid-July, with Williams becoming the second female commander of the space station when she took charge earlier this year. Williams, an avid runner, became ran the first triathlon in space during the mission, which also featured three spacewalks and the first official cargo delivery by a robotic Dragon spacecraft built by the U.S. company SpaceX.

The Soyuz spacecraft ferrying Williams and her crewmates back to Earth is due to fire its rocket engine to leave orbit at 7:58 p.m. EST (0058 Nov. 19 GMT) and land in Kazakhstan just under one hour later. It will be the first night landing of a Soyuz spacecraft since the Expedition 12 mission in 2006, NASA officials said.

A fleet of eight helicopters carrying recovery teams and vehicles will be circling the Soyuz spacecraft's primary and backup landing zones in order to ensure a swift retrieval of the returning astronauts.

As Williams and her crew readapt to life on Earth, the Expedition 34 crew still on the space station will prepare for a busy holiday season in orbit. The astronaut and cosmonauts are expected to celebrate the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday (Nov. 22) and prepare for the arrival of three new crewmembers in mid-December.

A relatively bad video of the International Space Station flying over my house. Norm texted me the night before saying that the space station would be flying over at 5:55am. Since I get up at 6am anyway I figured it would be easy for me to catch it. I put my telephoto lens on my camera and left it by the door. Then I actually had a dream that night that I went out and took a crappy video with my telephoto lens and regretted it. In my dream, I walked back inside thinking I should have used my wide angle lens plus a tripod. When I woke up and went outside, I thought about the dream, but I still decided to go out with my telephoto. You can see for yourself that I probably should have just used my wide angle and a tripod. Just start a conversion with friends... #39;Do you remember the cartoon Ulysses 31 #39;. 3 hours later you will have found you have talked about loads of programmes you grew up with. It wasn #39;t originally a English show and was in fact a French show animated by a Japanese company. The show was based on a book that was set in ancient Greece called #39;The Odyssey #39; which was written by Homer (no, not the Simpson one!). The series continued with the Greek Mythology theme, but instead it was based in the 31st century (even the space station looked like a Greek helmet).Only 26 episodes of Ulysses 31 were made, which surprises a lot of people as everyone thinks there were more. The Intro music was very catchy (you will hum it for hours), plus the music during the show was very atmospheric and set the mood for each story. One thing I do know is that the title sequence (below) from the Videos/DVDs has been cut short, which is a shame as the intro had sections that Nono sang. I #39;d love to see the original titles again. Plus the DVD #39;s have missed the swoosh effect right at the end of them. I used to love this bit when I was a kid! Story: Each Episode began with these immortal lines: #39;It is the 31st Century, Ulysses killed the Giant Cyclops when he rescued the children and his son Telemachus.
