July 30, 2012 Earth Orbit_Progress space carrier finally docks with ISS
Russian space carrier Progress safely docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday morning. It was a second attempt to dock the carrier, after the new generation approach pattern Kurs--NA had been installed on it. According to the Russian Space Agency, the first docking, which was attempted on 24 July, went wrong due to a sensing system malfunction of the Kurs--NA. The spacecraft will spend some three weeks in orbit, after which it will be buried in the unnavigable part of the Pacific Ocean. A Soyuz spacecraft carrying an international crew of Japanese Akihiko Hoshide, Russian Yury Malenchenko and American Sunita Williams successfully docked with the International Space Station in the early hours of Tuesday morning (3:40am GMT). After the docking, the crew of the next long-term Expedition 32/33 teamed up with the previous crew, NASA Flight Engineer Joseph Acaba and two Russian cosmonauts, Gennady Padalka and Sergey Revin. 2013 will be another great year for Europe in Space with launches and missions in several domains. For launchers the second Vega flight is due in springtime but at the same time Ariane and Soyuz will continue their task from Europe #39;s Space port in French Guiana. In particular Ariane 5 will send another ATV to supply cargo to the International Space station. The ISS will host another ESA astronaut, Luca Parmitano who will participate in a long duration flight between end of May till end of November. International Space Station, ISS, passes by the Moon
Filmed on 23rd December 2012 from Cheshire, the International Space Station, at the time docked with the Soyuz capsule, makes a close approach to the Moon. Around 30 km to the North, a full transit of the Moon could be seen. The ISS is a vast artificial satellite, which is approximately the size of a football pitch, orbiting about 400km above the Earth #39;s surface. Despite its large size, it appears only about 1/40 of the Moon #39;s size at its closest, although it #39;s difficult to tell from the video. In this particular pass, filming began whilst it was over the Atlantic Ocean. It its closest point, the ISS was above southern England and was 440km away. The last shots show the ISS setting over Germany and the Czech Republic.
