Canobie Lake Park Reopens Thursday: How Will It Work? – NBC10 Boston

Canobie Lake Park, one of New Hampshire's best known destinations, reopens on Thursday, July 16 at 10:30 a.m. for the first time this season after the coronavirus shutdowns. It was originally slated to open on May 2.

The 65-acre park, located in Salem, offers over 85 attractions and has been ranked as one of the top amusement parks in the country by Money Magazine. It has been in operation for over a century, first opening as a trolley park back in 1902.

Here's what you need to know about Thursday's reopening:

In-depth news coverage of the Greater Boston Area.

Well, for one thing, you need to make a reservation in advance, as there is a 25% capacity limit. Park hours are limited to 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Labor Day. Dates for August reservations are not yet available, and information about the fall will be released in August.

The park is asking patrons to watch its safety video first:

After watching the video, you can make a reservation for the date of your choice. Once you've done that, you're clear to buy tickets. No same day passes will be sold on site, so make sure to buy them ahead of time.

Attractions that are now open include the Alpine Swings, Antique Cars, The Autobahn, The Boats, The Boston Tea Party, The Canobie 500, The Canobie Express, The Canobie Corkscrew, Castaway Island, DaVinci's Dream, The Fire Engines, Flower Power, Giant Sky Wheel, Helicopters, Ice Jet, The Jeeps, Jump Around, Junior Sportscars, Kiddie Canoes, Kiddie Carousel, Log Flume, Mini Dinos, Pirate Ship, Pony Carts, Sea/Land Rescue, Skater, Sky Fighter, Sky Ride, Tanks, Twist and Shout, Untamed, Venetian Carousel, Wipeout and Yankee Cannonball.

Attractions opening at a later date include the Jungle Bounce, Star Blaster, Zero Gravity, Boston Harbor Patrol, Dragon Coaster, Over the Rainbow, Caterpillar, Mine of Lost Souls, Psychodrome, Turkish Twist, Blue Heron, Carousel, Crazy Cups, Roosters, Wave Blaster, Xtreme Frisbee, The Dodgems and Mini Skooters.

Castaway Island, Canobie's water park, is open but will have a lower than normal capacity. That could mean extended wait times or entry might not be possible at all in some cases.

All live entertainment, costumed character meet and greets and the Canobie Club cashless payment bracelet program are not currently available. There will also be no fireworks displays for the start of the season.

All guests over the age of 3 will be required to wear face coverings during their visit. The only permitted exceptions are while on rides, while consuming food and beverages and when in a marked "Mask Free Rest Area" where social distancing will be enforced.

Anyone who doesn't want to or is unable to wear a face covering is asked to postpone their visit until a time when the face covering restrictions are no longer required.

Temperature checks and COVID-19 health screening questions will be administered prior to entry.

The park has also set up hand sanitizing stations throughout the facility, including at all attractions. Social distancing will be enforced throughout the park, including in queue lines, at food stands, etc. Social distancing will also be enforced at all attractions, which may mean not all attractions will be full.

Do you have a smartphone with an IP water and dust resistance rating? Well, how about adding a bit more protection or alternatively giving your non-waterproof smartphone proper splash protection?

If you have any intention of going in or near water soon, then you should take a look at picking up a CaliCase a handy waterproof pouch designed to fully protect your phone when near, or in the water. You can even keep other belongings safe from the elements without needing a bathing suit with pockets.

While an IP68 rating is great for freshwater, it doesnt cover you fully in saltwater. CaliCase properly seals in your device meaning you can even take your smartphone photography underwater. Because each pouch is made from thick, durable and importantly clear PVC plastic, the dual layered-structure gives you confidence that even non-waterproof smartphones are safe from water damage.

The magnetic seal and latch also ensure that your valuables are securely sealed inside, safe from the weather and water. The rotating latches are easy enough for anyone to clip but the protection is second-to-none.

The windows at the rear also ensure that you can take your photos and videos underwater for a completely new perspective. Using a CaliCase with your smartphone also happens to be a piece of cake thanks to the front-facing window, which allows you to use your phone without getting the display wet.

Water protection isnt all thats offered, as the soft cushioned design means that youve got even better overall drop protection. Plus in a post-COVID world your smartphone is safer from contact with germs and bacteria.

Even if youre not heading to the beach or by a pool, the handy strap means heading out for a rainy run is no issue as your phone stays safe and dry. Clip on to a carabiner and have peace of mind no matter the weather conditions.

Each and every single CaliCase is IPX8 water and dust rated. This means that when your phone is placed inside, it can withstand up to 100 feet of water pressure more than enough for modest diving and snorkelling trips.

Worried about your phone sinking? Dont be, as the CaliCase includes a lightweight foam enclosure that allows the case to float so that you can worry less about your smartphone sinking. The colorful design also means that even in the murkiest waters youll be able to spot your prized possession.

The CaliCase is available in 15 different stylish colours so you can match your smartphone design, and for a limited time our subscribers can grab 20% OFF a CaliCase if they use code 9to5Google a checkout:

Betting on Gas Is Definitely Immoraland Probably Unwise – The New Yorker

The President rejected many of the suggestions. What happens now?

Now all support organizations, such as our collective The Citizens Vests (Gilets Citoyens in French), which are organizing to communicate what can be better in peoples long-term daily lives if some of these proposals are adopted. The President said some proposals would be included in one project, of several laws, by the end of the summer, and others can be submitted to the population through a referendum by 2021. He also said that the modification to the Constitution would be submitted through a referendum by 2021. But we dont know if he will respect his commitment, so we need public debate and interest around this to make it happen. The citizens assembly has created an association to keep an eye over their work.

Green parties seem to have done well in many French citieswhats the political mood there now about things like transit?

It is difficult for the President to avoidthe questionof the climate emergency, and some think that people voted for the Greens thanks to the citizens assembly, and because of the social dysfunctions pointed out during the Yellow Vest movement. You can observe now that the government talks a little bit more about climate change than before, but people say this is just strategic, because it notices the actual interest of the population in that question.

If you want a short (and charmingly powerful) video that explains why fossil-fuel divestment is so important, you cant do better than this colorful offering from the young people at the Bay Area Earth Guardians Crew and Youth vs. Apocalypse.

As feedback loops go, this ones pretty simple: heat and drought lead to fire, and when you burn a forest you pour a lot of carbon into the atmosphere. According to the Times, the Siberian wildfires that occurred after temperatures topped a hundred degrees Fahrenheit north of the Arctic Circle apparently released more polluting gases into the Earths atmosphere than in any other month in 18 years of data collection.

Every little bit helps: last week, researchers announced that spreading rock dust on farm fields could pull fairly large amounts of carbon from the air, even as the practice builds healthier soil. When silicate or carbonate minerals in the dust dissolve in rain water, carbon dioxide is drawn from the atmosphere into the solution to form bicarbonate ions, the Washington Post explains. The bicarbonate ions are eventually washed by runoff into the ocean, where they form carbonate minerals, storing their carbon indefinitely. One drawback is the quantity of energy required to crush the rock, which could amount to a third of what it manages to save.

A global team of young people based in Japan has designed a new app to make it easy for people to contribute small sums to forest preservation.

Very useful new thoughts from the Center for Sustainable Economy about how to make sure that fossil-fuel companies cover the risks of oil spills and other accidents, instead of leaving the costs of these disasters for taxpayers.

The first reports from a robotic sub exploring the bottom of Antarcticas vast Thwaites Glacier are not encouraging. An international team of researchers found that warm water from the deep ocean is welling up from three directions and mixing underneath the ice. Thats bad news, since the collapse of that single glacier would raise the global sea level half a metre.

Joye Braun, an indefatigable activist from the Indigenous Environmental Network, reminds pipeline opponents not to slack off in the wake of last weeks Supreme Court rulings. Not only are other pipeline projects likely to continue apace (a fact that Steve Horn points out as well), but, as Braun wrote to me in an e-mail, the construction of man camps along the Keystone-pipeline route seems to still be under way. Such encampments, built for workers on the pipeline, create a particular threat in spreading the coronavirus, and have frequently been linked to sexual violence. Braun writes, On the Cheyenne River Sioux reservation women have formed a Nazhoo (whistle blower but not like DC whistle bloweractual blowing of whistles) society, and they are using social media to spread that idea to other reservations. Meanwhile, a delegation of indigenous womenmeets this weekwith Deutsche Bank, to ask it to stop supplying cash to the companies behind Keystone and other such projects.

Theres really just one number on the scoreboard that truly counts, and it shows how badly were losing. Scientists reported last week that new analyses show were approaching CO2 levels that havent been seen for fifteen million yearsmeaning that our atmosphere is becoming novel for hominids.

The Douglas fir is the state tree of Oregon (and the centerpiece of the best state license plate in America), but its in big trouble as temperatures heat up. The author Tim Palmer suggests that the conifer would be the proper rallying symbol for residents of the Beaver State who want to take on climate change.

Im always looking for little signs that the energy revolution is reaching into key corners of our economy, so it was heartening to read about climate smart solar tractors. They can, the inventors say, be charged by renewable energy and still provide all the power of a comparable diesel tractor. (Of course, thats also a good way to describe a draft horse.)

Data for Progress reports that extensive polling shows climate change should be a winning issue for Democrats in the fall; meanwhile, the group Climate Leaders for Biden managed to raise four million dollars in a single twenty-minute virtual fund-raiser, cordinated by the longtime environmental leader Tom Steyer, Bidens former primary rival. Its apparently Bidens biggest single-event haul of the campaign.

Ive been listening a lot to a new double album, Dialectic Soul, from a jazz combo led by the Cape Town-born drummer Asher Gamedze. Heres a cut. The record is about the unfinished and always unfolding practices and traditions of resistance, and how the motion of these things is imperative to imagining, articulating and building new worlds within worlds.

New AirPods rival from OnePlus features 30 hours of battery life – Laptop Mag

OnePlus has made a name for itself in the Android smartphone space with flagship-level specs at more affordable prices, but the company has changed things up a bit with its latest announcement. While our colleagues over at Tom's Guide can give you a look at the new OnePlus Nord budget smartphone, we were more interested in the company's first set of truly wireless earbuds.

The OnePlus Buds have one standout feature: up to 30 hours of battery life with the included charging case, which is 6 hours longer than the Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro and the earbuds themselves offer a similar advantage with 7 hours on a charge versus 5 hours for the AirPods and 4.5 hours for the AirPods Pro.

OnePlus has only released a single official shot of the OnePlus Buds so far, but in a recent interview with popular tech YouTuber MKBHD, we get an extended look at what would certainly seem to be the OnePlus Buds in a blue colorway that matches the upcoming OnePlus Nord smartphone.

Overall, the appearance is quite similar to the AirPods with a half-in-ear design that , according to OnePlus, should "sit security in most people's ears." What we don't know from the company's official postings or the interview is whether the earbuds include tips to help deliver both an improved seal and secure fit like the AirPods Pro or if they go without, like the standard AirPods.

OnePlus did reveal the weight of the OnePlus Buds, which is 4.6 grams per earbud and 36 grams for the charging case. This is 0.6 grams heavier than the AirPods, but 4 grams lighter than the AirPods case.

Naturally, the Bluetooth headphones will work with any smartphone, tablet, or laptop, but like Apple, the company has some special integrations for OnePlus users. The one example they offered so far is that OnePlus Buds will enter an ultra-low latency mode when used in conjunction with a OnePlus smartphone that is in gaming mode.

Unfortunately, we don't have pricing oravailability details just yet, but we expect to have both following the OnePlus Nord launch event on July 21.

While the tight integration with OnePlus smartphones might not be a selling point for the wider market, if the company can deliver solid sound quality paired with long battery life at a lower price than the AirPods, it could have a real hit on its hands.

Tale of 2 Kerala scams solar scandal that singed UDF govt and gold that has LDF in a spot – ThePrint

Text Size:A- A+

Kochi: In August 2013, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) laid siege to the Kerala Secretariat, demanding the resignation of then Congress Chief Minister Oommen Chandy over the solar scam.

Chandy had been under the scanner as three staff members in his office allegedly had links to the main accused in the scam, Saritha Nair and her husband Biju Radhakrishnan, who allegedly duped investors to park money in a solar company by flaunting their proximity to the chief ministers office (CMO).

The unrelenting opposition led by Pinarayi Vijayan, then the state secretary of the CPI(M), protested at the secretariat for nearly 30 hours, finally calling off the siege after Chandy promised a judicial probe in the case.

The scam eventually scorched the Chandy government, in part because the LDF managed to keep the controversy alive right until assembly elections in 2016, with Nair even making sexual harassment allegations against Chandy.

Now, some seven years on, the boot is on the other foot, with the only saving grace for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan being that his office hasnt been wholly sucked into the scandal that is roiling Keralas political landscape these days.

The communist government in Kerala, basking in the plaudits it has received for its handling of the Covid-19 crisis, is now in a spot over the gold scam.

The scam hit headlines on 5 July when customs officials at the Thiruvananthapuram airport intercepted diplomatic cargo, meant for the UAE consulate office, and found 30 kg of gold worth Rs 13.5 crore that was allegedly being smuggled.

We are deeply grateful to our readers & viewers for their time, trust and subscriptions.

The consignment was classified as diplomatic baggage but investigating agencies quickly discovered that it was part of a smuggling racket.

The controversy then inched closer to the Chief Ministers Office as prime accused Swapna Suresh allegedly had links with M. Sivasankar, the IAS officer who was the CMs principal secretary and well as the state IT secretary. The chief minister holds the IT portfolio as well.

Sivasankar has since been relieved of both posts.

For keen watchers of the states politics, there are similarities in both cases.

For a state still to shed all vestiges of patriarchy, the principal focus in the gold scam has been on the woman accused just like in the solar case. The echoes also extend to the links to the CMO in both cases. And while the solar scam singed the UDF government, the gold scam threatens to derail the current Communist dispensation.

But while the solar scam is a cheating case, the gold scam has metamorphosed into a probe into alleged terror funding.

The solar scam that originally broke in 2013 involved alleged fraud by a company, Team Solar Energy, in the sale of solar panels. Saritha and her husband Biju Radhakrishnan were the main promoters of the firm.

The scam was run by duping investors into parking money with the solar company either for installing solar panels or in cases of larger investments, with the promise of being made partners. It became apparent that Saritha had flaunted her proximity with three staff members of the then CM Oommen Chandys office to clinch deals.

The size of the scam was put at Rs 10 crore, and the LDF managed to keep alive the controversy for the next two years orchestrating the famous Secretariat siege.

Biju Radhakrishnan, Saritha Nair and three accomplices state government employee A. Firoz, actress Shalini Menon and Tenny Joppan, one of CMs personal aides were arrested.

A trial court in Coimbatore sentenced Saritha Nair and Biju Radhakrishnan to three years imprisonment on 31 October, 2019. Other accused have since faded into obscurity.

Former CM Oommen Chandy has always maintained his innocence. It took him a while to come to terms with the political price he had to pay on account of wild accusations, hitherto unproven.

In 2018, the Kerala High Court expunged all remarks and findings by the Justice G. Sivarajan Commission that probed the multi-crore solar panel scam based on a letter reportedly written by Nair alleging sexual harassment against the former chief minister. It, however, refused to quash the commissions report altogether as sought by Chandy.

The gold scam has all the similar makings.

First and foremost is the link to the CMO.

Key accused Swapna Suresh reportedly worked on a space project under the IT department of the Kerala State Information Technology Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL), and it was alleged that protocol was not followed in her appointment.

She allegedly landed the job at the behest of Sivasankar, the IAS officer removed as the CMs principal secretary and as the IT secretary.

Media reports now claim that she was also in touch with Kerala Higher Education Minister K.T. Jaleel in June and had ties with Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan. The minister insists that the calls were strictly professional.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has since taken over the probe, has submitted before the NIA court that 30 kg gold smuggled in through diplomatic channels was not for jewellery makers but for those engaged in anti-national activities.

While producing Swapna Suresh and co-accused Sandeep Nair before the NIA court, the probe team also submitted that they had used forged documents of the UAE Consulate, including seal and emblem, to facilitate movement of the contraband consignment through diplomatic channels. Swapna and Sandeep have been remanded in NIA custody for a week.

Meanwhile, in the original gold smuggling probe conducted by the customs department, with help from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, the additional chief judicial magistrate court (economic offences wing) has remanded in judicial custody K.T. Rameez, a repeat offender and alleged gun-runner from Malappuram until 27 July.

He is suspected to be the supplier of smuggled gold once it gets through customs clearance, and also the financier. The diplomatic route has so far proved good for smuggling well over 100 kg gold in less than a year, it is suspected.

Rameez has used his connections in high places to walk free after being apprehended in the past for smuggling gold, illegal hunting of animals and bringing in dismantled parts of 13 guns from abroad. The list of suspects in the diplomatic channel gold smuggling case include, apart from Swapna and Sandeep, former PRO of UAE Consulate Sarith Kumar, Fareed Faisal in the UAE and Rameez. Now, three other associates of Rameez have been arrested by customs officers who say this racket has so far smuggled gold worth Rs 40 crore.

Until now, the banana peel moment for the LDF government was when CM Pinarayi Vijayan decided to go hammer and tongs to uphold the Supreme Court verdict of 28 September 2018, allowing women aged between 10 and 50 years to enter the Sabarimala shrine.

The frenzy that unfolded during the pilgrim season that followed made it clear it was more about politics and less about ensuring religious freedom, notwithstanding the public posturing. The lukewarm interest shown by the Kerala government to keep enforcing the apex court order during the 2020 season, just before the pandemic broke, reiterates this point.

The gold scam, however, could put Vijayan in a far bigger pickle.

For one, the probe is now with the NIA, which is under the central government.

There is a belief in the state that Home Minister Amit Shah may be planning to turn the NIA probe into an electoral surge for the state BJP.

The reason: Allowing the probe to progress beyond a point could dent the prospects of the LDF in the assembly elections slated for April-May 2021.

This, however, would not entirely serve the interests of the BJP and its aim of Congress-mukt Bharat as the net gains would accrue to the Congress-led UDF.

It is the assumption of political observers now that the NIA probe would be allowed to go all the way if Congress leaders too turn up in the list of those who facilitated the gold smuggling racket in other words, a terror funding angle in the gold smuggling racket that can showcase the involvement of leaders from both the LDF and the UDF.

This alone could tip the electoral fortunes in favour of the BJP in a state where its local leaders have struggled to complete the last mile and turn a second finish into a winning seat.

But thats easier said than done.

The opposition has not made a concerted effort to take advantage of the alleged involvement of the CMO in the scam.

Their efforts are no patch on the CPM-led fronts strategy that involved systematically leveraging the solar scam for political gains.

The LDF was more organised in its attack. There were quite a few exclusive exposes handed over to newspapers and TV channels, and there were not too many dull days in short, it was well orchestrated.

Against this, the attack mounted by the present Opposition is limited to press conferences, which obviously does not have quite the same popular appeal as the explosive leaks of yore.

That could change if M. Sivasankar, until early this month the chief ministers principal secretary and the state IT secretary, gets named as an accused. Things have gone from bad to worse as Sivasankar was questioned for nine long hours Tuesday night by customs officers who then confiscated his mobile phone. He may be called for further questioning, even by the NIA.

It could also change if the call records of Swapna begin revealing more names of those who were in her loop, like it did in the Saritha saga.

That could be one way of keeping this scam alive politically, but then there is no guarantee that names would be limited to those belonging to the ruling party alone. Of course, there are whispers regarding the likelihood of bureaucrats and top police officers figuring in her list.

For now, Pinarayi Vijayan is putting up a brave face, saying he welcomes any probe into the possible involvement of his office, and that all guilty should be punished.

But the latest scam has all the makings of another potboiler, complete with the deadly cocktail of gold, terror, international connections, subverting officers in high places and the shadow of doubt over elected leaders.

Jackson city council moving forward with series of new resolutions – WLNS

Posted: Jul 15, 2020 / 03:50 PM EDT / Updated: Jul 15, 2020 / 03:50 PM EDT

During a jam-packed three, and a half hour meeting, the city made the unanimous decision to move forward with changing the city seal, and logo away from President Andrew Jackson.

Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies says, they want something that better represents todays community.

I proposed using Austin Blair, or an oak tree for Under the Oaks Park where the republican party was founded, but I think whats important is that the council voted to move forward with changing the seal, and wants to have public input, said Mayor Dobies.

The city also announced a ban of all tobacco products in parks, and cemeteries. There will be a three step system for violators, that includes a fine. This is all a part of the cities Clean Air initiative.

Our parks are a huge source of healthy lifestyles, and quality of life here in the city, so I think when we encourage people to use our parks for those things we want to make sure they are engaging in healthy ways, said Public Information Officer for the City of Jackson, Aaron Dimick.

Mayor Dobies also announced a decision to create a team that will help lead the charge in bringing the long forgotten MLK corridor back to life.

The use of a Corridor Improvement Authority, the tax increment financing that that will allow will really help drive economic development to the MLK corridor, and along Prospect street.

The next step for the project is a public hearing next month.

Ameren Shares Tips On Keeping Your Home Cool During The Upcoming Heat Wave – krmsradio.com

With the heat wave approaching, officials at Ameren Missouri are sharing tips on how to keep your home cool.

One way is by replacing those outdated light-bulbs

NEWS-07-15-2020 AMEREN HEAT 1 - 15th July 2020

Energy Solutions Director Bill Davis with Ameren.

He tells KRMS News you can also install new technology on your air conditioner to help control the environment better.

NEWS-07-15-2020 AMEREN HEAT 2 - 15th July 2020

Here are more ways you can help keep your Lake Home cool during the upcoming heat wave.

Feel the breeze.

When you use a fan and air conditioner simultaneously, you can raise your thermostat setting by a few degrees. Set the ceiling fans blades to spin counterclockwise to create a cool breeze. Remember to turn off ceiling fans in rooms that you are not currently occupying to conserve energy.

Stay in the shade.

Curtains and blinds can be your best ally against the summer rays. Keep window coverings closed during the day when the sun is at its hottest. This can be especially beneficial if your windows are older or your home gets a lot of direct sunlight.

Weatherproof your home.

Weather strip, seal and caulk gaps around your doors and windows, which can let hot air in. You could save 10-20% on your energy bill by sealing uncontrolled air leaks.

Wait to use indoor appliances.

Some appliances, such as ovens, dryers and dishwashers, give off excess heat. Hold off until after dark to run these so there is less stress on your air conditioner.

Use exhaust fans.

Take shorter showers and use bathroom exhaust fans to remove the heat and humidity. Make sure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans are vented to the outside, not the attic, to keep the warm air out.

Clean the furnace filter.

Replacing a dirty, clogged air filter with a clean one can lower the air conditioning systems energy consumption by up to 15 percent. Ameren Missouri recommends changing the filter every month or two during the cooling season

Control your thermostat.

Consider installing a smart thermostat, which you can set up to run cooler when you are at home or asleep, and a bit warmer for when you are out of the house. This keeps you comfortable while also saving money. Rebates and savings opportunities for smart thermostats and high-efficiency air conditioners are available for customers at Amerenmissourisavings.com.

Ameren Missouri customers can find rebates on many products that conserve energy, make your home more comfortable and reduce energy statements. Take advantage of over $120 million in incentives and rebates atAmerenmissourisavings.com.

Limited Income Customer Assistance Resources

Ameren Missouri partners with the United Way and other agencies to provide energy assistance to help limited-income customers manage their energy costs. These programs include weatherization support, heating and air conditioning system assistance, and equipment repair for residential customers. More information is available at AmerenMissouri.com.

This saucy, smothered tofu with peppers and onions will have you dreaming of the Mexican coast – Seattle Times

Mexican cuisine, says Eddie Garza, doesnt have to be all about cheese, meat and lard. In his 2016 cookbook, Salud!, he points to pre-Hispanic Mesoamericas big focus on fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains. As his grandmother told him, Before the Spanish came to Mexico, food was provided by the sun and earth.

The son of Mexican immigrants who grew up in a border town at the southern tip of Texas, Garza now works for the Humane Society of the United States, where he helps reform food systems in Latinx communities and trains cooks in the joys of plant-based recipes. I first started cooking from Garzas book because his adaptations of traditional dishes are rooted in a deep understanding of Mexican cooking instilled by his abuelita. And the results have never disappointed me.

Theyre not all pre-Hispanic, either. My latest obsession is his Tofu Steak Veracruzana, seared cutlets smothered in a classic Veracruz-style salsa that includes bell peppers, tomato, olives, capers and white wine. Those capers and olives, he writes, represent some of the European ingredients that came to characterize the coastal states cooking, along with tropical fruit and, of course, seafood.

Tofu, famous for its mildness, works well with the salsas tart, salty, slightly spicy punch. But Garza adds flavor wherever he can, so before you sear it and sauce it, you treat the tofu to a lime-heavy marinade. Theres nothing fishy about that.

_____

Active: 30 minutes | Total: 1 hour

Makes: 4 servings

Seared tofu cutlets get a classic coastal Mexican treatment usually reserved for seafood. Serve with rice and/or a green salad, if youd like.

Ingredients

One (14-ounce) package water-packed extra-firm tofu, drained

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, divided

1/4 cup homemade or low-sodium store-bought vegetable broth

1/4 cup fresh lime juice

1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 medium red onion (10 ounces), thinly sliced

1 medium red bell pepper (8 ounces), stemmed, seeded and thinly sliced

1 jalapeo chile pepper, stemmed, seeded and thinly sliced

1/2 cup pitted green olives, chopped

1/4 cup capers (from one 3.5-ounce jar), drained, rinsed and chopped

3 large plum tomatoes (12 ounces to 1 pound total), seeded and thinly sliced

1/2 cup white wine

1 tablespoon vegan butter, such as Miyokos or Earth Balance

Steps

1. Wrap the tofu in paper towels or a clean dish towel and microwave on high for 1 minute. Unwrap, rewrap with fresh towels, and repeat. (This gets rid of excess liquid and is faster than pressing the tofu.) Unwrap, let cool, and cut into four planks.

2. Combine the tofu, half the garlic, the stock, lime juice, oregano, salt and pepper in a large bowl or zip-top bag. Cover or seal and marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour, turning occasionally. (If desired, you can marinate the tofu in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.) Drain the tofu and reserve the marinade for another use.

3. In a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil until shimmering. Add the drained tofu and sear it without disturbing until well browned, 4 to 6 minutes. Turn each piece over, and sear on the other side until browned, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a plate.

4. Add the onion, bell pepper and jalapeo to the skillet and cook, stirring, until they start to soften, about 4 minutes. Stir in the olives, capers and the remaining garlic and cook, stirring, until all the vegetables are tender, about 3 minutes.

5. Add the tomatoes and wine. Reduce the heat to medium, return the tofu to the skillet, and cook until the sauce reduces slightly and the tofu is heated through, about 5 minutes. Stir in the butter, then taste and season with additional salt and pepper, if desired. To serve, either leave the tofu planks whole or slice them on the bias, and spoon over the sauce and vegetables. Serve hot.

NOTE: Because of the marinade, ingredients are too variable for a meaningful nutritional analysis.

People have been using fake cards to exempt them from wearing face masks in Toronto – blogTO

Fake face mask exemption medical cards are being circulated in Toronto by anti-lockdown groups, and the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) is urging people not to use them.

'Face Mask Medical Exemption' cards, which supposedly allow card carriers to bypass Ontario's new mandatory mask bylaw, have notbeen distributed by a public health agency, though they've been strategically designed to look like they have.

The plastic card states the following: "I have a medical condition that prevents me from wearing a mask or face covering."

It also features a medical cross symbol, a physician's sealand a Canadian flag.

On the flip side, the card states that the violation of disability rights under the Canadian Human Rights Act or the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms can be reported. It also provides the phone number of the CHRC.

But the groups behind the cards, whose logos are featured on the back and whose members have been recorded handing them out to the public and in some cases, even charged money for them, have produced a card that should not be used, says the CHRC.

"These are fake," said the CHRC.

"The Commission has not and would not produce posters or cards claiming that the cardholder has an exemption from wearing a face mask in closed public places. We strongly recommend to Canadians that they do not share or use these fraudulent cards."

Business owners are also urging one another not to be duped into accepting them from customers trying to get into their stores mask-free.

Toronto isn't the only city to report fake mask exemption cards different versions have been documentedin New York as well.

But mask exemptionsare already written into Toronto's mandatory mask bylaw: kids under the age of 2, for example, aren't mandated towear it if their parents don't want them to.

Nor are the hearing impaired, or those who requireaccommodations in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code.

But the bylaw also states that no proof is actually needed for an exemption, meaning it's up to stores to decide how best to enforce the rules. It's a hard decision for business ownerswhocould be subject toa $1,000 fine, while customers without masks face no fines at all.

After a three-and-a-half hour debate with multiple amendments introduced, the Williamson County Board of Commissioners voted 18-5 to approve the formation of a nine-member task force to study the Williamson County seal, which has an image of the Confederate flag.

Commissioners voting against the move included Judy Herbert, 3rd District;Bert Chalfant, 7th District; GreggLawrence, 4th District; ErinNations, 6th District;and Barbara Sturgeon, 8th District.

Most commissioners said they received an enormous response from the community about the seal in emails, phone calls andpetitions some against the Confederate flag symbol on the seal and some in favor.

Adopted in 1968 in the era of the Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther KingJr., the Williamson County seal has drawnmountingcriticism from constituents.

Franklin resident Dustin Koctar, who launched a petition to change the seal, first criticized the presence of a Confederate flag on it at a community vigil in memory of George Floyd in Franklin last month.

Theresolution, writtenby Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson's office, calls for the formation of a nine-member task force comprised of Blackcommunityand business leaders as well as representatives from various community organizations and the county historian.

The task forceis chargedwith discussingthe seal and submitting a recommendation to the county commission in September about whether to change it.

Williamson Inc., the county's chamber of commerce and county economic department, will chair the task force, including organizing meetings and collecting data. A representative from Williamson Inc. will also serve on the task force.

According to the resolution, the nine-member committee would consist of the following:

'Do not be silent': Meet Nashville teens who launched a movement for social change

Several commissioners proposed amendments, including how to direct the task force, whileothers wanted to bypass the task force altogether.

Commissioner Sean Aiello, 11th District, proposed an amendment that would appoint the county historianRick Warwick as chairman of the task force, instead of Williamson Inc. His proposalfailed.

Commissioner David Landrum, 10th District, proposed anamendment for the task forcetoonly study the upper left hand quadrant of the seal containing the Confederate flag, and leave the rest of the seal untouched. His amendment gained the most traction, but still failed11-12.

At one point, Commissioner Gregg Lawrence, 4th District, suggested deferring the discussion.

"Let's wait until things calm down in America so maybe we can be more reasonable," he said, also stating that the seal needs to change."I think it's going to be hard to get a consensus during this time on the seal."

Commissioner Dwight Bubba Jones, 1st District, later made an amendment to eliminate the entire county seal altogether.

"Let's just do away with the seal and remove the controversy," he said.

However, he later withdrew his amendment when Commissioner Chad Story, 4th District, proposed a separate amendmentcalling for theremovalthe Confederate flag on the seal instead of forming atask force gained momentum.

Story argued that he "feared" that the task force might alter other parts of the seal and thus compromise its full historical integrity.

"Let's remove the Confederate flag and take our resolution directly to the Tennessee Historical Commission," Story said.

Some commissioners who previously supported the task forcebegan to shift their perspective as Story presented his argument.

Commissioner Brian Beathard, 11th District, who initially sponsoredthe mayor's task force proposal, shifted his perspective tosupport instead Story's proposal.

"Some constituents have egregiously told me the commission doesn't have the gravitas to make this decision on our own," Beathard said. "Acommittee would have too much to tackle looking at whole seal, if the sensitive part isreally to remove the flag."

Commissioner Keith Hudson, 3rd District, the only Black member of the county commission, initiallysupported thetask force resolution but latervoiced his support ofStory's suggestion to removethe Confederate flag as well, while bypassing the task force.

Hudson also explained his view of the Confederate flag as a symbol.

Hesimply explained that for him and many other people of colorthe Confederate flag is "asymbol of hate."

"It's the same astheswastika for me," he said. "I tell myson to stay away. If it's displayed in a business, they are sending a message they don't want you as a patron."

He said the flag symbolizes different things for different people.

"Is it hate or is it heritage? You don't know so, son, stay away," Hudson said."I remember coming out of Woolworth's, and the Klan marching, and I saw the battle flag and that is mymemory."

Ultimately, the momentum for Story's amendment fizzled when he removed it from consideration. The commission then voted on the initial resolutionpresented by the mayorandfive commission sponsors Hudson, Morton, Webb, Beathard and Commissioner Betsy Hester, 2nd District.

Other commissioners voiced why they supportthe formation of the task force.

"I am proud to support this proposal, this is a much needed change," Chas Morton, 9th District, said.

"Everything should have a look to be modernized,"Paul Webb, 6th District said."Let's have the discussion."

"We need to discuss this to be an authentic county," said Beth Lothers, 5th District, said.

The county commission will review the recommendations from the task force at its regular monthly commission meeting in September.

It’s Time To Retire The Offensive Design Of The Mass. Flag And Seal – WBUR

The overdue discussion about inequities crippling and killing Americans of color shouldnt overlook the discrimination faced by the continents original citizens. Native Americans drown in widespread poverty; until recently, North Dakota tribes labored under longstanding voter suppression, an outrage that just this year, mercifully, has been abandoned. (Architects of the suppression never called it that, basking instead in justifications that would persuade only those who write with crayon.)

Compared to these life-stunting scourges, criticism of the Massachusetts state seal and flag as demeaning to Native Americans admittedly seems like swatting a fly amid a swarm of murder hornets. Yet as the welcome removal of monuments to the Confederacy (and that treasonous regimes flags from NASCAR races) attest, symbols matter as material, micro and not-so-micro aggressions. Theyre mute transmitters that announce societys values.

At least some lawmakers grasp that truth in this Black Lives Matter moment. A state Senate committee gave thumbs up on a bill authorizing study of a redesign of the flag and seal and passed it along to the joint Senate-House Rules Committee.

The seal and the flag bearing it feature a disembodied, sword-wielding arm above a Native American. The horseshoe of the state motto wraps around him in Latin, variously translated as by the sword we seek peace, but peace under liberty or [she] seeks with the sword a quiet peace under liberty.

... symbols matter as material, micro and not-so-micro aggressions. Theyre mute transmitters that announce societys values.

Native American Bay Staters have objected for decades to the design, saying it bespeaks the violent subjugation of their people, beginning with European colonizers and ravaging the arc of Native history through the Trail of Tears, the Plains Wars and Wounded Knee.

That some say the arm in question belongs to Myles Standish doesnt make things better, his documented brutality against Natives having appalled even fellow Pilgrims.

There is a reasonable though to me unconvincing case for keeping the current design. Heraldry experts say the sword isnt referring to conquest of the Natives but to the motto; together, the two of them refer to preserving liberty against the oppressive environment the Pilgrims had fled in England.

Normally, Im all for people educating themselves when their offense is based on misunderstanding. But the seal and flag arent like books or articles, which can be evaluated in the totality of their self-explanation. Visual images are more like headlines, shorn of lengthy context; if theyre not self-explanatory, they dont serve their purpose. Public symbols should be quickly understandable to the public, not just to a gnostic few. A sword brandished over a Native? Given our well-known mistreatment of Indigenous people, what are we who are uninitiated in heraldry supposed to think that means?

The Massachusetts legislation recognizes this. It would create a commission, including tribal members, to study features of the state seal and motto, including those which potentially have been unwittingly harmful to or misunderstood by the citizens of the Commonwealth.

The commission would consider a redesign, ensuring that any final seal and motto faithfully reflect and embody the historic and contemporary commitments of the commonwealth to peace, justice, liberty and equality.

Reforming symbols, wise heads remind us, wont redress more substantive injustices against Native Americans including those in Massachusetts. The states Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is jousting with the Trump Administration, which is trying to remove reservation status that the tribe needs to build a Taunton casino without state licensing approval. If that happens, Boston Globe columnist Joan Vennochi writes, the beneficiaries would be other casino operators, including some with reported connections to President Trump.

A sword brandished over a Native? Given our well-known mistreatment of Indigenous people, what are we who are uninitiated in heraldry supposed to think that means?

Vennochi is right that gambling is not an economic development tool that King Solomon would devise. Shes also right that the government nevertheless offers it to tribes from whom we stole sovereignty and prosperity long ago, and that meddling with that process on behalf of cronies is presidential malfeasance. So Bay State Natives have more on their plate than a new seal and flag.

But more than half a century ago, President Lyndon Johnson summed up our Indigenous people as The Forgotten American. Today, in an era when were asking whether offensive statues and flags belong in the public square, a seal-and-flag redesign could be the beginning of remembrance in Massachusetts.

Is Working with the Lincoln Project Sleeping with the Enemy? – The New Yorker

One night in 1984, when Heath Eiden was sixteen, he found himself at the Hotel Meridien in San Francisco, in the campaign suite of Walter Mondale. This was during the Democratic National Convention. Consultants and congressmen milled around, wreathed in cigar smoke. Eiden, then a high-school junior from Minneapolis, was there with Mondales son Ted, as a volunteer. He was next to Mondale when the candidate took a call from Lane Kirkland, the head of the A.F.L.-C.I.O. (You got it, Fritz), and then announced to the room that hed won enough delegates to secure the nomination. Eiden was bewitched. The spirit left the road and jumped up into me, he recalled. Fritz Mondale, the last honest politician: he actually said, Yeah, Im going to raise your taxes.

After Reagan beat Mondale that year in a landslide (Mondale won just one state: Minnesota), Eiden, an early adept with his schools Sony Betacam 1800, got the first on-camera interview with the loser. (It led to his short film, Triumph Over Tragedy: The Humphrey-Mondale Tradition, which is archived at the Minnesota Historical Society.) Eiden had TV-news aspirations, but before long disillusionment over sensationalism and dishonesty in the media soured him on it all. His last-ditch attempt was a documentary, in 2004, of another doomed White House bid, called Dean and Me: Lessons from an American Primary, which failed to change the world or to make him rich.

A couple of weeks ago, Eiden, who now lives in Stowe, Vermont, and works as a video producer, got a call from Stuart Stevens, the political consultant, who also has a house in Stowe. Stevens has advised five Republican Presidential candidates, including GeorgeW. Bush and Mitt Romney, but has recently abandoned the Party, in the belief that it has abandoned him. (His eighth book, to be published next month, is called It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump. Last week, he said, The Party always had a dark side. We thought it was a recessive gene, but it turned out to be the dominant gene. I feel like a sucker.)

Stevens was calling on behalf of the Lincoln Project, the confederation of G.O.P. apostates who, appalled by Trump, had formed a political-action committee to defeat him. The Lincoln Project had been producing sharply negative TV ads about Trump, which have run mostly in Washington, D.C., mainly to needle their subject, but which, because of their sass and their source, almost always go viral on social media.

Stevens wanted Eiden to shoot the Lincoln Projects new spot. This one would feature an emergency-room doctor down the road, in South Burlington, named Dan Barkhuff, a former Navy Seal and a graduate of the Naval Academy and of Harvard Medical School, who had started an organization called Veterans for Responsible Leadership. The occasion was the news that the President had ignored intelligence reports that a Russian military unit had been paying bounties to the Taliban for the killing of American soldiers in Afghanistan.

Eiden was torn. On the one hand, work was scarce during the pandemic, and, of course, he abhorred Trump and had been frustrated by the Democrats failure to hit back. But, as a dyed-in-the-down Minnesota liberal, he had misgivings about working with what he called the dark sidesome of the Republican operatives who, by way of rough tactics, had engineered the demise of so many of his favored candidates through the years. Ultimately, though, the enemy-of-my-enemy principle pertained.

The previous week, hed driven to Minneapolis with his teen-age son, to pay their respects (and shoot some footage) at the memorial for George Floyd. That experience, plus a few days in the suburbs among Covid truthers, and an encounter with a waiter making an I cant breathe joke, had only quickened his revulsion. If it takes working with Republicans to get this fucker out of the White House, fine, he said.

What kind of style do you want? Eiden asked Stevens.

Think Swift Boat, Stevens replied.

I knew exactly what Id found myself in the middle of, Eiden recalled.

Eiden and Barkhuff met up at Stevenss house. The Lincoln Project had sent a script, by a screenwriter of the HBO series Band of Brothers, but Barkhuff ditched it for one of his own. Identifying himself as a pro-life gun-owning combat veteran, he said into the camera, Any Commander-in-Chief with a spine would be stomping the shit out of some Russians right now, diplomatically, economically, or, if necessary, with the sort of asymmetric warfare theyre using to send our kids home in body bags. Mr. Trump, youre either a coward who cant stand up to an ex-K.G.B. goon or youre complicit. Which is it?

Afterward, Eiden went home and uploaded the footage. An editor named Joey, in Denver, put it together overnight. The following afternoon, Stevens noted that the spot, called Betrayed, had been viewed online more than six million times. To what end, time will tell.

U.S. Atty warns about fake ‘mask exemption’ cards – The Outer Banks Voice

By Outer Banks Voice on July 8, 2020

(Office of the U.S. Attorney, Eastern District of NC)

The office of U.S. Attorney Robert J. Higdon, Jr. issued a release on July 8 warning citizens that cards and other documents bearing the U.S. Department of Justice seal and claiming that individuals are exempt from mask requirements are fraudulent.

There have been reports of individuals in North Carolina and other parts of the country creating cards or other documents claiming that the bearer of the card is exempt from mask requirements. Some versions of these cards threaten businesses or organizations with fines if they take steps to require patrons to wear masks.

In an effort to make the cards or documents appear legitimate, fraudsters may include the U.S. Department of Justices seal or include other threatening language. The Department of Justice is also aware of efforts by some to sell these fake cards to members of the public.

The public should take note that the Department did not issue these documents, and the Department does not endorse them. Furthermore, the Department has not granted permission for the use of its seal for this purpose, and misusing the Department seal is a federal crime.

During this pandemic, false informationand fake cards like thesedo a grave disservice to us all as we try to understand and follow the public-health measures our governments have ordered, said U.S. Attorney Higdon. The public should be aware that these cards are fake, and rest assured that we will investigate those who are knowingly creating or peddling these fraudulent cards to the unsuspecting public.

Signs That Your Car Engine Could Be Damaged – New Vision

Once its damaged, your car will not move well on the road, says Kasozi.

A car that has ever been involved in an accident would require to have its engine changed. Photos by Stella Naigino

Once its damaged, your car will not move well on the road, says Kasozi.

MOTORING

The car engine is the heart of the car and a lot goes on in it to enable the car to move from one place to another. Experts say it's important that motorists pay attention to their car engines to ensure proper functionality.

AnnetKasozi a mechanic at Bethel auto garage in Seeta notes that when an engine has issues, their usually warning signs and once these are ignored, the engine suffers more damage.

"Once it's damaged, your car will not move well on the road," says Kasozi.

She also reveals that a car that has ever been involved in an accident would require to have its engine changed.

Low pulling power

Kasozi notes that many times when motorists are driving and notice low pulling power, many rush to think that they don't have enough fuel. On further investigations they realise that their cars have issues with the engine.

"This means that a motorist is experiencing compression loss and this can be fixed by having an engine overhaul, "she says.

Fast engine consumption of oil and fuel

Umar Kasujja a mechanic in Nateete notes that investing in car fuel and oil doesn't come cheaply.

However, if you notice a change in oil and fuel consumption of your car engine, organise with your mechanic to check your engine and if possible have an engine overhaul done for a good fuel and oil consumption.

Abnormal smoke

Moses Kayiira a mechanic at Bakayiira diesel garage notes that many times when an engine needs to be revamped, it produces different kinds of smoke like the blue smoke which signifies oil consumption taking place in the engine.

At this point consider having an engine overhaul done to your car.

Black wetsuit in the exhaust pipe

Kayiira notes that while driving many motorists see black, grey smoke coming from their car exhaust system. This is not normal, it's a sign that oil is burning in the engine.

This reduces the effectiveness of the engine. To stop this from happening, check your engine value seal and piston cylinders but if possible have an engine overhaul for a best driving experience.

Noise coming from the engine

Kasujja notes many times motorist notice noise coming from their car engines but very few pay attention to the noise and this damages the car engine more.

"However, if you notice that your car engine produces some noise, consider having it checked and if the noise persists, have an engine over haul to give your car engine more life, "he says.
