Native Midwest ferns grow well in shady spots – Chicago Daily Herald

There are many ferns native to our Illinois gardens, all ready to add textural contrast for bold-foliaged perennials or linear sedges.

Adiantum pedatum, commonly called Northern maidenhair fern, is ideal for the heavily shaded garden where other perennials suffer from lack of light. It grows up to 2 feet tall, but often stays as short as a foot while spreading very slowly by rhizomes to form magnificent colonies with time.

Its lacy fronds of light green leaves are held on arching, thin, black stems. Plants would choose a spot in damp woods (and do in their native habitats) but grow happily in average to moist, rich garden soil. Fronds may brown in hot, dry summers without supplemental water.

Northern maidenhair ferns are not favored by deer or rabbits and rarely suffer from insect or disease problems.

Dryopteris marginalis does not spread and instead forms a tidy, vase-shaped clump of leathery, dark green fronds. Commonly called wood fern or marginal shield fern because of the way it produces its spores along the outer margins of its fronds, it thrives in moist, rich, well-drained soil. Once established, however, marginal shield fern can tolerate short periods of drought.

Its 18- to 30-inch fronds look their best all season if planted in a site protected from strong winds. Semi-evergreen, they remain green in the winter garden until snow covers them.

Marginal shield ferns are not bothered by insects, diseases or munching garden marauders.

Matteuccia struthiopteris, also known as ostrich fern, is taller than most other native ferns. Growing 4 feet tall or more, it is best for gardens with room for it to spread out. It expands quickly when planted in consistently moist soil in part to full shade.

Its attractive, bright green fiddleheads emerge from the soil in spring. Feathery, medium green fronds remain attractive until summer takes its toll. Large, dark brown fertile fronds rise from the center of plants in summer.

Plant ostrich ferns in wet areas where other perennials are difficult to grow. Deer and rabbits won't eat them first (or even second).

If a more mannerly fern is needed for a consistently moist area, Onoclea sensibilis is a lovely choice. Commonly called sensitive fern because its bright green fronds succumb to the first fall frost, it grows 3 to 4 feet tall. It also spreads by rhizomes but at a much less rambunctious rate than ostrich ferns.

Grow sensitive ferns in rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil in part to full shade. Unable to tolerate dry soil, watering is necessary during periods without sufficient rainfall.

In late summer, their shorter, woody fertile fronds turn brown and remain attractive well into winter. Insects and diseases rarely, if ever, bother sensitive ferns, and rabbits don't find their fronds delicious.

Choose native ferns when considering adding ferns to a shade garden. Plant them alongside other natives like foamflowers and Solomon's seal and non-natives like purple-foliaged coral bells and hostas.

More than 60,000 new virus cases every day in US – Dunya News

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States on Monday recorded more than 60,000 new cases of coronavirus infection for the seventh consecutive day, Johns Hopkins University reported in its real-time tally.

With another 488 deaths and 61,288 cases registered in 24 hours, the country has a total of 140,922 deaths and 3.82 million cases, the Baltimore-based university said at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Tuesday).

President Donald Trump on Monday finally spoke out in favor of mask-wearing -- a marked change of tune as polls show him headed for election disaster in November as the US has emerged as the worlds worst-hit country in the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you cant socially distance," Trump wrote. "There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!"

- Troubled Trump to relaunch coronavirus briefings -

US President Donald Trump promised Monday to resume televised coronavirus briefings and finally spoke out in favor of mask-wearing -- a marked change of tune as polls show him headed for election disaster.

With only just over 100 days until the election against Democrat Joe Biden, Trump is scrambling to respond to public anger over his troubled months-long handling of the pandemic.

Since the virus first hit the United States, Trump has insisted that it will just "disappear."

But that sunny claim is now badly strained even among loyal supporters, as they watch COVID-19 cases surge through populous Republican-led states like Florida and Texas.

More widely, polls show public trust in Trumps management of the crisis tanking.

Throughout, he has sought to deny the seriousness of the problem, an attitude symbolized by his mockery of masks and refusal to back up doctors recommendations for mass use.

Trump went some way to addressing that Monday with a tweeted picture of himself in a black mask with the presidential seal and a call for patriotism.

"Many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you cant socially distance," Trump wrote. "There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!"

However, his tweet stopped well short of endorsing calls from some for a nationwide mandate to wear masks in public.

- Doing very well -

Trump, a lifelong real estate salesman and more recently reality TV performer, says the real problem is that Americans just arent hearing the right news.

So, likely from Tuesday he will resume the regular evening televised briefings from the White House that he gave until late April, often finding himself accused of giving confusing or misleading information.

"I think its a great way to get information out to the public," he told reporters. "Were doing very well in so many different ways."

Trump acknowledged a current "big flare-up" of cases in the country but once again distanced himself from responsibility for the problem, underlining that the disease is also ravaging "Mexico, Brazil, many countries in Europe, all over, Russia."

"When you watch the news, the local news, and you see it, and its, its like all about the United States. They never like to talk about whats going on in the world," he said.

Trump said the briefings would focus on good news regarding vaccine development and therapeutics.

"We think were doing very well in that regard," he said. "I think Im going to be bringing in some of the great companies that are working very successfully."

"Were really coming up with some very good answers," he said.

- PR fiasco -

Trump has great faith in his ability before the cameras. He has transformed the image of the US presidency during his first term with unprecedented streams of press conferences, tweets and rallies.

But his previous spell as the nations pandemic-spokesman in chief ended badly in late April.

Trump often turned what were billed as opportunities to provide the anxious public with information into testy exchanges with reporters in the White House briefing room.

He finally ditched the events after a PR fiasco where he mused on air about the possibility of injecting household disinfectant to combat COVID-19.

He later said he had been speaking "sarcastically," although there was no evidence of that at the time.

- Polls slide -

The president has consistently sought to play down the severity of the health crisis, hoping that voters will instead focus on what he touts as his good management of the economy.

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday," he once again claimed that the virus, which has killed more than 140,000 Americans and caused massive economic disruption, would somehow go away by itself.

"Ill be right eventually," he said.

But with the virus on the rebound, he finds himself accused of failing to lead.

Biden has opened a double-digit lead in election polls, and an ABC/ Washington Post poll released Friday showed nearly two-thirds of Americans mistrust Trump on the coronavirus.

Trump, nevertheless, appears to be looking forward to his chance to get back to the briefing room podium.

"We had very successful briefings. I was doing them and we had a lot of people watching, record numbers watching. In the history of cable television, theres never been anything like it," he said.

Studies show microplastics are causing a negative impact to the health of the River Thames and its inhabitants – The Natural History Museum

Separate new studies by Postgraduate students Alex McGoran, Katharine Rowley and Katherine McCoy, all from the Department of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, reveal that microplastics, are present in high quantities throughout the tidal Thames and are being ingested by wildlife.

Fibres from washing machine outflows and potentially from sewage outfalls, are most commonly ingested by wildlife; but fragments from the breakup of larger plastics, such as packaging items are most abundant in the water. Flushable wet wipes were found in high abundance on the shoreline forming huge unsightly reefs. Although pollution from trace metals is now on the decline, the contamination of the Thames by plastic is a major issue.

The research of Alex McGoran1, NERC DTP PhD student (Royal Holloway and NHM) and supported by the Fishmongers Company Charitable Trust, reports how two resident estuarine species of crab, namely the native shore crab and the invasive Chinese mitten crab, are ingesting microplastics.

In total, 135 crabs were examined and 874 pieces and tangles of plastic, mainly in the form of fibres, were removed for their bodies. Frequently these fibres form tangles comprising up to 100 pieces of plastic and fill the stomach of many crabs which could reduce the urge to feed and leave the animals, with less energy for growth and reproduction.

About 95% of mitten crabs were found to have tangled plastic in the stomach. Although tangles were dominated by fibres, they were found to contain other fragments of microplastics from sanitary pads, balloons, elastic bands and carrier bags.

Typically, microplastic ingestion is low in many species, with the exception of some groups, such as seabirds. Upon bringing these crabs back to the labs at Natural History Museum, it was shocking to find that they were full of plastic. Tangles of plastic were particularly prevalent in the invasive Chinese mitten crab and we still dont fully understand the reason for this. We propose that when crabs moult (shedding their exoskeleton to grow) that plastic is trapped in the discarded gut lining, said Alex McGoran.

Two additional studies into the pollution of the Thames by plastic were undertaken by Masters Students.

Katharine Rowley2 (Royal Holloway, NHM and ZSL) focussed on the quantification of microplastics in the River Thames water column.

Katharine recorded many forms of microplastic in the Thames, ranging from glitter, microbeads to plastic fragments. Her study found that 93.5% of microplastics in the water column were most likely formed from the fragmentation of larger plastic items, with food packaging thought to be a significant source for these plastics.

Her study found high levels of microplastics in the Thames, estimating that on peak ebb tides, 94 thousand microplastics flow down the River Thames per second in some areas. This study highlights the severity of microplastic contamination in the River Thames and the grave need for the reduction of plastic input into the freshwater environment.

Katharine Rowley, said: Our study provides baseline data for microplastic contamination in the River Thames water column. Globally, in comparison to published estimates of microplastic contamination in marine and freshwater environments, the River Thames contains very high levels of this pollutant, potentially a major input to the North Sea. With the potential threats of plastic pollution to both human and ecosystem health, it is of great importance that the input of plastic into marine and freshwater environments is reduced.

The research of Katherine McCoy (Royal Holloway and NHM), in collaboration with river clean-up charity, Thames21, looked at flushable and non-flushable wet wipes as a source of plastic pollution in the River Thames and the environmental impacts they have on the invasive Asian clam. Wet wipes found in sewage effluent are deposited in large numbers on the foreshore on the south bank, just upstream from Hammersmith Bridge, creating massive wet wipe reefs. This study demonstrated that high densities of wet wipes are associated with low population numbers of clams, and vice versa. It was found that clams adjacent to the wet wipe reefs contained synthetic polymers, some of which may have originated from the wet wipe reefs and other pollutants found on the site such as sanitary items.

Katherine McCoy, said: This research highlights the impacts of improper waste disposal on our environment, especially the flushing of wet wipes. These products are often described as flushable, but they have been known to block sewage pipes by contributing to fatbergs and have now been seen to cause environmental disruption on the foreshores of the river Thames. Our study shows that stricter regulations are needed for the labelling and disposal of these products. There is great scope to further research the impacts of microplastics and indeed microfibres on Thames organisms.

Dr Paul Clark, Life Sciences Department, NHM said I was born in London and as a child I remember the Thames as a heavily polluted river which led to the decline of its fish populations. When the Government ordered a clean-up of the catchment the River returned back to life. What our students have shown in this collaboration is that although the Thames is certainly cleaner with regards some chemical pollutants, e.g. heavy metals, the River is severely polluted with plastic. And once again our wildlife is threatened.

Professor Dave Morritt from the Department of Biological Sciences at Royal Holloway, said: Taken together these studies show how many different types of plastic, from microplastics in the water through to larger items of debris physically altering the foreshore, can potentially affect a wide range of organisms in the River Thames.

The increased use of single-use plastic items, and the inappropriate disposal of such items, including masks and gloves, along with plastic-containing cleaning products, during the current Covid-19 pandemic, may well exacerbate this problem.

Thames Water has recently reported an increase in wet wipe-related blockages of sewer systems and when the Covid-19 restrictions on fieldwork are lifted, it would be interesting to find out the prevalence of these products in the River Thames.

We must not forget that, although these studies illustrate the problem on a local scale, plastic pollution is very much a global issue.

Anna Cucknell, ZSLs Thames Project Manager, said: Plastic pollution is devastating for aquatic ecosystems and I was shocked by the densities we found. Our study showed the majority of microplastics in the Thames are created by larger plastic items breaking down which is why the #OneLess campaign, led by ZSL and partners, is working to reduce single use plastic water bottles in London. To date it has eliminated 4.4 million single-use plastic water bottles from London's supply chains and removed 114,000 from the Thames. Thanks to decades of conservation two species of seal and more than 100 species of fish including sharks, seahorses and the Critically Endangered European eel, call the Thames Estuary home. We must not let plastic pollution threaten their survival.

Dog and cat books to read this summer: Pet Connection – GoErie.com

From the story of a SEAL Team dog to "Cats for Dummies," this list can help you settle in for some great reading.

You've created a sourdough starter and baked bread until you don't have any more friends to give loaves to. You've planted a garden. You've learned how to knit. You've binged "Aggretsuko," "Bodyguard" and "Chef's Table." You've watched "Hamilton" three times. Isn't it time you settled down with a great book? Here's what to read, whether your jam is mysteries, cats, photography or dogs of war.

Most military working dogs, aka combat assault dogs, remain anonymous throughout their careers, but one broke out from the pack after participating in a high-level operation. Millions know the name of Cairo, the Belgian Malinois who took part in SEAL Team Operation Neptune Spear, which ended in the death of terrorist Osama bin Laden in 2011. In "No Ordinary Dog: My Partner From the SEAL Teams to the Bin Laden Raid" (St. Martin's Press), Cairo's handler Will Chesney and writer Joe Layden tell the story of Chesney and Cairo's training and careers as well as their love story. (Let's call it what it is.) The action-packed tale begins with Chesney's journey to become a SEAL, how his love of dogs led him to a role as a handler when dogs began to become valued SEAL Team members, their perilous work in Afghanistan, and how injuries separated them and brought them back together. No one should miss this story, so for kids there is "Warrior Dog: The True Story of a Navy SEAL and His Fearless Canine Partner," adapted for young readers.

Mystery writer Laurien Berenson continues her Melanie Travis series with "Game of Dog Bones" (Kensington Books), in which the standard poodle owner/schoolteacher and her family head to New York City to watch poodle maven Aunt Peg achieve the dream of a lifetime: judging the Non-Sporting Group at Westminster. But the occasion is marred afterward when Aunt Peg's nemesis, Victor Durbin, is found dead. Turns out he had a lot of enemies, for a number of good reasons. Travis seeks to nose out the killer before Aunt Peg is charged with Durbin's murder.

I've long thought of myself as a terrible photographer. I took an incomplete in the subject in my college journalism program, and only the advent of smartphones improved my ability to take good pictures I even won an award with one of them! But thanks to Andrew Marttila's new book "How to Take Awesome Photos of Cats" (Running Press Adult), I think I could finally advance from halfway decent snapshots of my pets with a phone camera to actually being able to operate a digital SLR and get great animal shots, both at home and on trips. Even if you're not that interested in photography, you'll enjoy the photos of adorable kittens and cats, but if you really want to take better pictures of your cats, this fun and practical guide will show you how.

Cat lovers will also want to check out three more books about their favorite four-footers. "Catlady: A Love Letter to Women and Their Cats" (Prestel), by Leah Reena Goren, features illustrated essays illuminating the ways cats have influenced the lives or careers of women, the friendships between women and cats, and how cats help make a home.

In "Decoding Your Cat" (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), veterinary behaviorists have pulled together a guide to why cats do the things they do with information that may surprise and educate even those who consider themselves cat experts.

The third edition of "Cats for Dummies" (For Dummies) by Gina Spadafori, Dr. Lauren Demos and Dr. Paul Pion updates a classic with a new chapter on enrichment for indoor cats, including information on catios; a new chapter on helping community cats, including kitten fostering; and all new and updated medical material.

Finally, in "One Hundred Dogs and Counting: One Woman, Ten Thousand Miles and a Journey into the Heart of Shelters and Rescues" (Pegasus Books), Cara Sue Achterberg goes on an inspiring road trip to rural shelters and rescues seeking an answer to the unending stream of foster dogs that come to her door.

Pet Connection is produced by a team of pet-care experts headed by veterinarian Marty Becker and journalist Kim Campbell Thornton of Vetstreet.com. Joining them is dog trainer and behavior consultant Mikkel Becker.

Using masks to defeat the Invisible Chinese virus is Patriotic, says Trump, fifteen points behind Biden in the polls – MercoPress

Tuesday, July 21st 2020 - 06:35 UTC We are United in our effort to defeat the Invisible China Virus, and many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can't socially distance

Person of the week, boos and cheers – Majorca Daily Bulletin

Majorca's Bel Oliver.18-07-2020R.L.Person of the week

... was the now former tourism secretary of state, Majorca's Bel Oliver. While the island's tourism was principally concerning itself with masks and street closures, the tourism industry more broadly was up in arms about revelations regarding the Spanish government's Responsible Tourism Covid seal of approval. It seemed that anyone could apply for this seal and get one without any verification being made that there was compliance. The secretary of state's office was handing them out without checks and controls. The revelation made, and Bel Oliver suddenly had a new job - at the UN's World Tourism Organization. The business with the seal was purely coincidental, Spain's minister for industry, trade and tourism insisted.

For advances finally being made in creating a renewable energy infrastructure in Majorca. Endesa was given authorisation to start the construction of one of two photovoltaic plants near to the power station in Alcudia. The company has already begun construction of a plant in Llucmajor, and more are planned. With grants available to private investors to develop other plants, the hope is that by the end of next year a network will be emerging. There is, however, a problem, and an ironic one at that - the environmental impact. Objections are largely based on what these plants will do for the landscape.

For tourists behaving badly. While all the attention was on Magalluf's Punta Ballena and Arenal's Ballermann, an incident in the Santa Catalina area of Palma didn't attract quite the same level of interest. On Monday evening, a 43-year-old British tourist, who was staying somewhere in Calvia, had found himself in Santa Catalina. Clearly drunk, he was bothering diners and was deliberately coughing. He claimed to have Covid. The National Police were called. He resisted arrest and had to be restrained. He appeared before a court and was eventually released, a test having shown that he was negative for coronavirus.

Lovinas Amish Kitchen: Wedding memories and Mothers raisin pie – New Philadelphia Times Reporter

July 15 was our 27th anniversary. Lots of memories throughout the years since Joe and I were married.

This is what my mother wrote in her column in July 1993 about our wedding. Mother wrote, The weather was ideal for the wedding of daughter Lovina to Joe Eicher. Lots of work at such a time.

The Tuesday before the wedding, which was Thursday, July 15, about two dozen women came to help. They baked 90 pies (oatmeal, cherry, raisin, and rhubarb) and made 14 batches of nothings. Didnt really want that many pies, but that number came upon us before we knew or thought of it. Well anyways no worry to run out of pies.

Wednesday about a dozen girls came to peel potatoes, cut up vegetables for the dressing and make potato salad for which I had cooked a twenty-quart cooker full of potatoes.

Also, the tables were set and the last minute cleaning done. Our wash house or shed saw lots of life out there, as all the work was done in there to prepare for the wedding ceremony. Wednesday evening quite a few of our friends came to see the wedding tables, and refreshments were served to the ones that came. It was an enjoyable evening.

Then came the wedding day. We started to fry chicken (300 pounds) at 4:15 a.m. which was served for dinner. Had enough for supper too and also served boneless ham. Our meals consisted of chicken and noodles, gravy, mashed potatoes, dressing, chicken, buttered corn, green beans (which came out of our garden), pork and beans, potato salad, carrot salad, lettuce salad (plenty from the garden), hot peppers, Swiss cheese, fruit salad, tapioca pudding, pies, cakes, nothings, celery sticks, coffee, bread, rhubarb jam, and butter. There were around 18 skillets used to fry the chicken. We cooked three 20-quart cookers of potatoes for dinner for mashed potatoes and two 20-quart cookers for chicken and noodles. In the afternoon we again cooked over 3 twenty-quart cookers of potatoes to be mashed and more chicken and noodles for supper. Also 16 quarts of gravy.

There were 28 women to prepare the meals. We could seat 98 people in the house and 70 in the wash house. The tool shed was cleaned out where the wedding services were held and later used to set up a table for the children for the noon and evening meals. We had quite a crowd here for both meals. Well enough of this for now. What a relief to have it over with.

I have so many precious memories of mother and how much she did for her family.

Joe was called back in to work this week after being laid off since March 23. It sure is a relief to us to have his income coming in again.

Yesterday, son Benjamin turned 21, so he wanted the family to come home for supper.

He ordered out pizza and wings for all of us. What a treat is was! Chips, cheeseball and crackers, and ice cream were also added to the menu. I didnt get time to make a cake and didnt for daughter Lorettas birthday either. With son Josephs birthday coming up next week, it looks like we will have one cake for all the July birthdays. Its almost too much cake for one month if we have three. Benjamin said he wouldnt eat cake anyway, so he didnt care that there wasnt a cake.

Since I am running out of space, I will write about our family gathering at sister Leah and Pauls house next week.

I will share the recipe for Mothers raisin pie. God bless!

Raisin Pie

2 (8-inch) unbaked pie crusts

1 cup raisins

2 tablespoons clear gelatin

pinch of salt

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 cup water

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Use one crust to line an 8-inch pie pan. Cook the raisins with water to cover in a kettle over medium heat until plump and juicy, about 15 to 30 minutes. In a bowl, make a thickening with the gelatin, salt, sugar, vinegar, and water. Pour into the raisin mixture. Cook until the mixture is thick enough to stick to a spoon. Add more sugar if it is not sweet enough for you. Pour into the pie shell. Cover the top with the remaining pie crust and seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in the center for steam to escape. Bake for 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Makes 1 (8-inch) pie.

Fox News and a dog: The origins of "Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself" – Film Daily

The Jeffrey Epstein saga continues as the son of a judge in the Epstein case was murdered over the weekend. Ghislaine Maxwell is currently in court for her involvement with Epsteins sex trafficking ring and now fears for her life. Back in November 2019 a former US Navy SEAL voiced his opinion on what happened to Epstein in a surprising way on Fox News.

The former US Navy SEAL, Mike Ritland, was on Fox News to discuss the dog who helped US troops raid and kill an Isis leader last week. Before Ritland left the broadcast he had one final PSA: If you dont know what youre doing dont buy a military dog, and Epstein didnt kill himself. Of course, the first part makes sense, but its strange that he would blurt out something about Jeffrey Epsteins death.

Ritlands statement was well before we knew just how deep the Epstein rabbit hole really went. His appearance turned Epstein didnt kill himself into a slogan that spread across social media and eventually became a meme. The Jeffrey Epstein didnt kill himself meme spread across Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram.

The Jeffrey Epstein didnt kill himself meme wasnt just isolated to the internet. The meme would be featured on Mardi Gras parade floats, specialty branded beers, cryptocurrencies, holiday-themed merchandise, and would even appear graffitied on Art Basel walls. From a simple segment with a Navy SEAL and his dog, the question of what happened to Jeffrey Epstein grew into the circus that it is today.

Federal prosecutors have tried to discourage the spread of the Epstein murder theory, but have found that it has taken on a life of its own. Some people see the proliferation of this meme as a sign of growing populist sentiment, as well as a growing distrust for the government and elites. Others have pointed out that this may be a way to keep the Jeffrey Epstein story alive within the news cycle.

Its hard to say why Ritland felt it was so important to share his opinion on Jeffrey Epsteins death, but as a former US Navy SEAL he does have a certain amount of authority that gives him credibility. We cant say whether Ritland had some secret insider information, or if he was just stirring the pot, but he has been mostly quiet about his opinion since the Fox News interview.

Regardless of Ritlands opinion, the Jeffrey Epstein conspiracy theories have continued to multiply. After Epsteins death on August 10th, 2019, a Rasmussen poll was conducted and found that only 29% of US adults believed that Epstein killed himself. By January 2020 a new Rasmussen poll showed that number shrank to 21%. Whether this was a direct result of Ritlands appearance on Fox News is hard to say.

What we do know is that as the Jeffrey Epstein case continues to garner publicity and with it a growing number of theories as to whats really going on behind the scenes. With the recent murder of a judges son, we can only assume that those behind the Epstein case are still powerful and still have something to hide.

Its also unclear yet whether Ghislaine Maxwell will provide enough names and evidence for the courts to expand their Jeffrey Epstein investigation. Maxwell has expressed fears that her life may be in danger now that shes detained, and the court has ensured that shes under constant supervision while locked up.

Start-Up Nation Central teams up with Inter-American Development Bank to promote Latin American partnerships – CTech

Start-Up Nation Central (SNC) announced on Thursday a new partnership with ConnectAmericas, a social network created by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to boost tech relations between Israel, Latin America and the Caribbean.

ConnectAmericas, which was developed with the support of Google, DHL, Sealand, Facebook, and Mastercard, is an online business platform that helps small and medium-sized enterprises from Latin America and the Caribbean internationalize their business by providing them with access to communities of clients, suppliers and investors in the region and around the world.

"The Israeli tech and innovation sector is receiving substantial attention from around the world in general, and especially during the global pandemic. Our partnership with IDB plays a major role in connecting the ecosystems, allowing us to identify Israeli partners to jointly develop and adapt solutions to the challenges faced by Latin America and the Caribbean," said Eugene Kandel, CEO of Start-Up Nation Central, a Tel Aviv-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Israeli tech sector. "We are honored to collaborate with the IDB Group, one of the leading development banks in the world, which helps its constituent countries overcome todays most pressing challenges.

SNC and IDB have created profiles for more than 5,000 Israeli companies on the ConnectAmericas platform. The accounts are verified by Start-Up Nation Central and 200 of them are managed directly by startup representatives. As part of the collaboration, SNC provides support services and manages the introductions and interactions between the companies signed through the partnership.

The IDB Lab, the groups innovation lab, will provide the sandbox to pilot selected solutions addressing the challenges of Covid-19, in order to scale the successful ones through the groups operations. The partnerships will be announced during the Outsource2LAC Virtual Week 2020, which is being held through July 22.

"Covid-19 will accelerate the shift to digital, and reshape the business landscape. Statues vs. systemic change: How much of a difference does tearing down monuments really make? – The Boston Globe

Activists, scholars, and artists at the forefront of the anti-racist movement said that symbols can be an easy out for powerful institutions still resistant to undoing systemic inequalities. But taken as a whole, they said, the growing collection of fallen symbols is a sign of true progress, an early victory in what will be a long fight for fundamental change.

If we are going to dismantle structural racism, if we are going to address the atrocities of slavery and genocide, if we are going to engage in a process of decolonization, the statues have to come down, said artist and activist Bree Newsome Bass, who in 2015 scaled a flagpole on the South Carolina State House grounds and took down the Confederate flag. I think that sometimes symbolic change is the first step, but it shouldnt be the last step.

A remarkable array of powerful institutions once resistant to calls for change have taken these first steps in recent weeks. The Washington NFL team is changing its long-criticized mascot. Mississippi is redesigning its Confederate emblem-emblazoned state flag; Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, is removing statues of Confederate generals. Quaker Oats retired the Aunt Jemima brand. And in cities across the country and even the world statues and site names enshrining slavers and colonial settlers have been taken down, and public art declaring that Black lives matter has gone up.

The national phenomenon has not passed over Massachusetts. Bostons art commission voted to take down the Emancipation Memorial, which depicts Abraham Lincoln towering over a kneeling formerly enslaved man, and the city is weighing whether to permanently remove a statue of Christopher Columbus. The state Senate is considering replacing the Massachusetts seal and flag, which shows the disembodied arm of colonist Myles Standish wielding a sword over Wampanoag leader Massasoit, and prohibiting use of Native American images as mascots in public high schools. Community artists collaborated with the city of Boston to paint a Black Lives Matter street mural in Nubian Square. An activist group has renewed its calls for renaming Faneuil Hall.

Monica Cannon-Grant, the founder of Violence in Boston and the organizer behind some of the citys largest anti-racism protests, said she is concerned that momentum will stop there. My frustration is when white people use [symbolic change] against us. They say, We let you write Black Lives Matter in the street, and were like, Yeah, we asked for systemic change.

Still, Cannon-Grant and others voice support for the artists writing Black Lives Matter in the street and activists advocating for the removal of problematic statues. In a rapidly-changing public landscape, they said, symbols shape how we see the world and reflect who holds power in it.

I think that symbolic change is real change of sorts because of the importance of the stories we tell ourselves about personhood, nationhood, and citizenship, said Tomiko Brown-Nagin, dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and a professor of law and history at Harvard.

Some symbols are so noxious they perpetrate a type of violence: Confederate flags hearkening back to treason and chattel slavery still flying over state houses, for example.

While these kinds of questions might seem at once kind of cosmetic, theyre also telling us something about history and whos valued where, said poet Kevin Young, director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

That deeper cultural significance is what gives symbolic change its power. And, so does action backing it up.

Its not just saying Black lives matter but showing how they do. Supporting artists, supporting change, putting their money where their mouth is I think thats the thing that reveals commitment, Young added. And I think commitment is more important than sincerity.

The difference between cosmetic and authentic change may depend on where its coming from, said Christy Coleman, a public historian and executive director of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation.

A healthy skepticism may be in order, Coleman warned, when powerful institutions voluntarily dispense with a logo or historic site name, sometimes as a diversion. Traditional power sources will rarely give that up, or theyll give just enough to say were making progress without really doing the heavy-duty work, she said. In real movements, in real change, it is a ground-up swell.

Many of the cities that have made symbolic gestures in support of Black activists and communities in recent weeks have also declined to cut police budgets as drastically as activists had hoped Boston included. At the national level, little progress has been made so far on sweeping policy reforms that would bring criminal justice, economic, health, and educational systems in line with protesters demands.

Brown-Nagin said this is a sign that communities and institutions must be attentive to what comes next: What changes in everyday practices and policies will follow?

It is a question Raul Fernandez, a Brookline select board member and associate dean for equity, diversity, and inclusion at Boston Universitys Wheelock College, said he posed to his fellow elected officials when they decided to raise a Black Lives Matter banner. You have to understand that that is a commitment. Its also an invitation to the community to hold you accountable, he said.

In Boston, said City Councilwoman Julia Mejia, next steps should include reviewing who is given power in the city through appointments to boards and commissions, and making historic sites such as Faneuil Hall engines of economic empowerment for people of color.

Were at a point where we need to do what is hard, Mejia said. That is what these times require: to go beyond symbols and statues to repair the harm.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley agreed: If we are going to paint Black Lives Matter murals on the street, that declaration must also be reflected in our city budgets.

Pressley said immediate steps must include economic relief as well as educational and social services for those hit by COVID-19 within the context of structural racism; in the longer term, she is proposing sweeping criminal justice reform legislation endorsed by the Movement for Black Lives.

Seeing such changes through, activists and scholars agreed, will require constituents to hold their leaders feet to the fire.

Newsome Bass noted that it took five years for the effort to remove Confederate and colonialist symbols to gain real traction. She also warned activists to be vigilant against institutions that co-opt the language of the movement without making real change.

You just have to keep pushing, she said. These mayors are patting themselves on the back for Black Lives Matter murals, but their police officers are still brutalizing people.

For Dart Adams, 44, who was born and raised in Roxbury, questions of statuary and progress quite literally hit close to home. Adams now lives just minutes away from Park Square, where the Emancipation Memorial stands awaiting removal on an avenue named for Christopher Columbus.

He sees a parallel for the current moment in the story of another generation of Black Bostonians, the enslaved and free people who fought for and won emancipation eight decades before Lincolns national proclamation.

For 10 straight years, they fought through the legal system and petitioned and protested until they got more and more wins, he said. Until they achieved what was once unthinkable, and in 1783 slavery in Massachusetts was abolished.

Taiwan in Time: A provincial government that ruled no land –

The Fujian Provincial Government operated out of New Taipei City for 40 years, and technically still exists today although it has no budget nor staff

By Han Cheung / Staff reporter

July 20 to July 26

For 40 years, there was a Fujian Provincial Government () in New Taipei City run by an appointed military governor-for-life.

This governor controlled no territory and performed no administrative duties; he and his staff were charged with researching plans for the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) to retake Fujian Province from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), who seized it along with the rest of China during the Chinese Civil War.

The provincial government office was originally located in Kinmen, which along with the Matsu islands made up the only part of Fujian Province that the KMT retained at just about 0.15 percent of the original territory.

But as Kinmen and Matsu became war zones following the 1954 First Taiwan Strait Crisis, the provincial government was relocated to todays Sindian District () in New Taipei City on July 20, 1956. Its administrative duties were transferred to the two military-run county offices that oversaw the islands.

Republic of China (ROC) Army major general Tai Chung-yu (), who was appointed provincial governor in 1955, held the post for 31 years until his death in 1986. The central government moved the office back to Kinmen in 1996 and completely defunded it in 2018, but they could not abolish it without changing the Constitution. As a result, the Fujian Provincial Government still exists, but in name only.

GOVERNOR-FOR-LIFE

In August 1949, the Peoples Liberation Army descended upon Fuzhou, the original seat of the Fujian Provincial Government. About 60,000 KMT troops defended the city, but they were decisively routed after a week of fighting. With his troops nearly wiped out, division commander Lee Yan-nian () eventually fled to Taiwan, where he was jailed for over a year for allegedly abandoning his post.

The KMT subsequently moved the Fujian Provincial Government to the offshore island of Kinmen and put it under military control. From there, they managed to fend off the pursuing PLA troops two months later at the Battle of Guningtou ().

Since the KMT also managed to hold on to the Yijiangshan () and Dachen () islands off the coast of Zhejiang Province, it actually established a local Zhejiang Provincial Government in 1951. The office was abolished when the PLA captured the islands during the First Taiwan Strait Crisis of 1954.

The PLA also tried to take Kinmen during the same conflict by heavily shelling it for over a year, but they eventually relented when the US threatened to respond with nuclear weapons. The precarious situation prompted the KMT to designate Kinmen and Matsu as military zones in 1956, and the provincial government office was moved to Sindian.

Even the Japanese and KMT allowed limited local elections in Taiwan, but in Kinmen, the military commander who doubled as county commissioner initially appointed all positions down to the borough wardens. The first local elections were held in 1971.

Several months before he left Kinmen, Tai carved the propaganda slogan the restoration of our nation is within reach () into a large boulder at Taiwu Mountain (). The PLA would attack Kinmen again two years later but by then, Tai was working in Sindian.

The Kinmen and Matsu warzone provisions state that the office in Sindian was in charge of conducting research toward plans for retaking [Fujian] province, but its unclear what exactly this research entailed.

FREEZING THE PROVINCE

While Martial Law ended in 1987, Kinmen and Matsu remained under military control until 1992. Just a year after the Fujian Provincial Government moved back to Kinmen, the National Assembly on July 21, 1997 amended the constitution to greatly reduce the powers the nations provincial governments. These changes were chiefly aimed at the Taiwan Provincial Government since its territory overlapped with the central government by 98 percent. Some say the move was politically motivated, but the official line was to streamline operations and save costs.

The central government also canceled direct provincial governor elections. These changes didnt affect the Fujian office much because it wasnt a functioning administrative entity and did not have elected governors.

The Fujian Provincial Government further lost its autonomy in 1998, becoming an entity under the Executive Yuan. Former secretary-general Wong Ming-chih () told the BBC that after 1998, the offices main function was to serve as a bridge between Kinmen, Matsu and the central government, advocating for local policy and requesting funding. For example, Wong says the offices efforts were key to government approval of the Kinmen Bridge, which began construction in 2013 and will connect the main island with neighboring Little Kinmen () by next year.

Wong says that people sending letters from Taiwan to Chinas Fujian Provincial Peoples Government () looking for lost relatives would sometimes accidentally omit the Peoples, and the mail would wind up in Kinmen.

The Fujian provincial governors appointed after 2007 all concurrently held other positions. Lo Ying-shay (), for instance, also served as minister without portfolio in addition to heading the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission (). This agency was also a remnant of the days when the KMT still openly claimed the two territories along with the rest of China. It was abolished in 2017.

When the Fujian Provincial Government was defunded, the Kinmen-Matsu Joint Services Center () assumed its responsibilities. The last provincial governor, Chang Ching-sen (), now heads the service center.

Wedding memories and mothers raisin pie

July 15 was our 27th anniversary. Lots of memories throughout the years since Joe and I were married.

This is what my mother wrote in her column in July 1993 about our wedding. Mother wrote,

The weather was ideal for the wedding of daughter Lovina to Joe Eicher.

We cooked 3 twenty-quart cookers of potatoes for dinner for mashed potatoes and 2 twenty-quart cookers for chicken and noodles.

Task force approved to study Confederate flag on Williamson County seal – Tennessean

After a three-and-a-half hour debate with multiple amendments introduced, the Williamson County Board of Commissioners voted 18-5 to approve the formation of a nine-member task force to study the Williamson County seal, which has an image of a Confederate flag.

Commissioners voting against the move included Judy Herbert, 3rd District;Bert Chalfant, 7th District; GreggLawrence, 4th District; ErinNations, 6th District;and Barbara Sturgeon, 8th District.

Most commissioners said they received an enormous response from the community about the seal in emails, phone calls andpetitions some against the Confederate symbol on the seal and some in favor.

Adopted in 1968 during the civil right movement, the Williamson County seal has drawnmountingcriticism from constituents.

Franklin resident Dustin Koctar, who launched a petition to change the seal, first criticized the presence of a Confederate flag on it at a community vigil in memory of George Floyd in Franklin last month.

Theresolution, writtenby Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson's office, calls for the formation of a nine-member task force comprised of Blackcommunityand business leaders as well as representatives from various community organizations and the county historian.

The task forceis chargedwith discussingthe seal and submitting a recommendation to the county commission in September about whether to change it.

Williamson Inc., the county's chamber of commerce and economic department, will chair the task force, including organizing meetings and collecting data. A representative from Williamson Inc. will also serve on the task force.

According to the resolution, the nine-member committee would consist of the following:

'Do not be silent': Meet Nashville teens who launched a movement for social change

Several commissioners proposed amendments, including how to direct the task force, whileothers wanted to bypass the task force altogether.

Commissioner Sean Aiello, 11th District, proposed an amendment that would appoint the county historianRick Warwick as chairman of the task forceinstead of representative of Williamson Inc., with the authority to recruit additional members beyond the recommended nine members.

His proposalfailed.

Commissioner David Landrum, 10th District, then proposed anamendment for the task forcetoonly study the upper left hand quadrant of the seal containing the Confederate flag, and leave the rest of the seal untouched. His amendment gained the most traction, but still failed11-12.

At one point, Commissioner Gregg Lawrence, 4th District, suggested deferring the discussion.

"Let's wait until things calm down in America so maybe we can be more reasonable," he said, also stating that the seal needs to change."I think it's going to be hard to get a consensus during this time on the seal."

Commissioner Dwight Bubba Jones, 1st District, later made an amendment to eliminate the entire county seal altogether.

"Let's just do away with the seal and remove the controversy," he said.

However, he later withdrew his amendment when Commissioner Chad Story, 4th District, proposed a separate amendmentcalling for theremovalthe Confederate flag on the seal instead of forming atask force. The Tennessee Historical Commission holds the authority to remove the flag from the seal. The county commission would have to ask its permission by resolution to alter the seal.

Story argued that he "feared" that the task force might alter other parts of the seal and thus compromise its full historical integrity.

"Let's remove the Confederate flag and take our resolution directly to the Tennessee Historical Commission," Story said.

Commissioner Brian Beathard, 11th District, who initially sponsoredthe mayor's task force proposal, shifted his perspective tosupport instead Story's proposal.

"Some constituents have egregiously told me the commission doesn't have the gravitas to make this decision on our own," Beathard said. "Acommittee would have too much to tackle looking at whole seal, if the sensitive part isreally to remove the flag."

Commissioner Keith Hudson, 3rd District, the only Black member of the County Commission, initiallysupported thetask force resolution but latervoiced his support for Story's suggestion to removethe flagand bypass the task force.

Hudson also explained his view of the flag as a symbol.

He explained that for him and many other people of color, it is "asymbol of hate."

"It's the same astheswastika for me," he said. "I tell myson to stay away. If it's displayed in a business, they are sending a message they don't want you as a patron."

He said the flag symbolizes different things for different people.

"Is it hate or is it heritage? You don't know so, son, stay away," Hudson said."I remember coming out of Woolworth's, and the Klan marching, and I saw the battle flag and that is mymemory."

Ultimately, the momentum for Story's amendment fizzled and itfailed, 14-8.

Commissioners Robbie Beal, Beathard, Hudson, Dwight Jones, Landrum, Lawrence, Chas Morton, 9th District, and Story voted in favor of the amendment to bypassthe task force and ask the Tennessee Historical Commission to remove the flag.

The commission then voted on the initial resolutionpresented by the mayorandfive commission sponsors Hudson, Morton, Webb, Beathard and Commissioner Betsy Hester, 2nd District.

"I am proud to support this proposal, this is a much needed change,"Morton said.

"I very much want to hear what the community says about this,"Paul Webb, 6th District, said."Let's have the discussion."

"We need to discuss this (by a task force) to be an authentic county," said Beth Lothers, 5th District. "It would be moving the needle in peoples hearts and minds in talking about this with their neighbors."

The county commission will review the recommendations from the task force at its regular monthly commission meeting in September.

US Space Force creates acquisition command to build culture of innovation – SpaceNews

Gen. John Jay Raymond, the leader of the U.S. Space Force, has been emphatic that the success of the service will depend on its technological might.

You will build the Space Force as the first digital service, and lay the foundation of a service that is innovative and can go fast, Raymond told a group of 86 Air Force Academy graduates who joined the Space Force in April.

Accelerating the pace of innovation is a huge imperative for the newest branch of the U.S. military, established in December 2019 with a mandate to ensure the U.S. stays ahead of foreign adversaries in the space technology race.

The traditional way of buying satellites and other space systems is problematic, Raymond has said, as programs take a decade or longer to move through the military acquisition process and struggle to keep up with commercial space innovation.

Another concern of Raymond, the chief of space operations, is the disjointed nature of the space procurement system, with multiple agencies that work under separate bureaucratic stovepipes.

With these issues in the backdrop, the Space Force on June 30 revealed plans to stand up a Space Systems Command as one of three field commands that will report directly to Raymond.

The other two are the Space Operations Command and the Space Training and Readiness Command, both to be located at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

The Space Systems Command will be the acquisition arm of the Space Force. To be run by a three-star general, the command will be responsible for the development, acquisition and maintenance of satellites and ground systems, the procurement of satcom and launch services, and for making investments in next-generation technologies. It will oversee the Space Forces approximately $12 billion annual budget for research, development and procurement of new systems.

The militarys primary space procurement organization today is the Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base. Officials said the new Space Systems Command is not replacing SMC but will be an umbrella organization bringing together SMC and other procurement agencies that are currently dispersed.

Lt. Gen. John JT Thompson, the commander of SMC, told SpaceNews that his organization will become the initial foundation of Space Systems Command. This is truly a work in progress, he said.

With SMC as the anchor, other organizations that will be moving under the Space Systems Command include the Commercial Satellite Communications Office a group based in the Washington D.C. area that manages the procurement of commercial satcom for the Defense Department and the Air Force Research Laboratorys Space Vehicles Directorate, based at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.

Thompson noted that SMC over the past couple of years has been reorganized under an effort called SMC 2.0 that focused on efficiency and speed. The transformation of SMC makes it exactly what we need as a foundational part for the new field command a flat, agile acquisition organization, pushing authorities down to the lowest level possible for timely decision making.

The next challenge will be to integrate other units beyond SMC, Thompson said. This will enable increased synchronization in delivering technologies and systems to space operators, as well as increased partnership with the labs and their science and technology activities.

The Pentagons Space Development Agency is expected to become part of Space Systems Command although the timing is still being negotiated. DoD established the SDA in March 2019 under the office of the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering in response to criticism that the U.S. military was not keeping up with the innovation happening in the space industry. The agency was given special authorities to cut red tape and acquire space technologies on an accelerated timeline.

Congress directed DoD to transfer the SDA to the Space Force by October 2022 but Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett and Raymond have argued that the SDA should transition to the Space Force sooner.

Before leaving his post on July 10, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Mike Griffin had pushed to delay the transfer of the SDA, insisting that the agency should not go to the Space Force until it has a chance to complete its first constellation of low orbiting satellites planned for 2022. Griffins departure has stirred speculation that the transfer of SDA to Space Systems Command will be accelerated.

Barrett and Raymond also want to bring the Space Rapid Capabilities Office under Space Systems Command but face pushback from Capitol Hill.

Based at Kirtland Air Force Base, the RCO develops and acquires classified space technologies using special authorities. The office currently reports to a board of directors made up of Air Force, Space Force and DoD officials. New Mexico lawmakers have proposed language in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act to keep the RCO in its current status, arguing that if the RCO is swallowed up in the new bureaucracy it will slow down programs.

Space Force officials said they are in talks with DoD, Army and Navy leaders about transferring space organizations from those services to the Space Systems Command. That would include portions of the Army Space and Missile Defense Command in Huntsville, Alabama, that develop and procure satellites; and the Navys satellite communications office in San Diego, California. This remains a long shot, however, as neither service has signaled it is prepared to turn over any assets.

The Space Force has yet to announce the details of how the former Air Force space units known as space wings will fit under the three new field commands. Some will be assigned to Space Operations Command, others to Space Systems Command.

The space wings will be renamed deltas as a way to define their identity separately from the Air Force. The delta wing is a central design element in the Space Force seal and flag.

Under the new structure, some deltas will report to Space Operations Command and others, like the ones that oversee space launches in Florida and in California, will report to Space Systems Command.

Space Force spokeswoman Lynn Kirby said the space wings will be aligned to the new field commands according to their primary missions. Units responsible for space launch, developmental testing, on-orbit checkout, and sustainment and maintenance of space systems will align under Space Systems Command, she said. Specific unit alignments and timelines will be announced when they are finalized.

The two launch deltas currently the 45h Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida; and the 30th Space Wing at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California will be under the Space Systems Command. These wings are now aligned with what used to be the 14th Air Force.

Former SMC commander retired Air Force Gen. Ellen Pawlikowski said it makes sense for the launch units to be aligned under Space Systems Command as SMCs Launch Enterprise is responsible for procuring launch services from commercial companies.

The launch wings are a better fit under Systems Command, Pawlikowski told SpaceNews. Launch operations today are really maintaining a range and overseeing contractors. I think thats a really good move.

Companies that sell space technologies to DoD, SMC and other military organizations hope the standup of a new acquisition command leads to more cohesion and consistency.

Were encouraged by anything that helps to clearly define authorities and discourage competition between entities that are doing the same thing, said one industry executive.

In a recent white paper, the National Security Space Association said the Space Force should set clear lanes in the road for acquiring national security space systems. The paper notes that numerous defense and intelligence organizations are currently involved in developing and procuring space systems, which creates confusion for companies trying to sell technologies to the government.

Tom Tav Taverney, a retired Air Force major general and former vice commander of Air Force Space Command, said the standup of the three new field commands are a significant step forward for the nascent Space Force.

It shows they are trying to re-imagine how acquisition fits into space operations, in a more agile way, Taverney said.

Organizations like SMC, he noted, were built around the notoriously convoluted military acquisition process where bureaucrats spend years writing detailed requirements documents, reviewing and approving those requirements before anything is built.

The reality today is we have to get systems into operations much faster, said Taverney. Adversaries are turning technology in three to five years, threats are emerging faster than we can keep up with.

The Space Force said its new field commands will have a flatter management structure than current organizations. That in itself will help speed up programs to some degree, said Taverney, but its not going to be enough unless processes are simplified and managers are willing to delegate authority.

If the intent is a lean, more agile organization, it certainly would be helpful to empower leaders with decision making, he said.

Pawlikowski, the former SMC commander, said Congress and DoD will have to trust the Space Force leadership and allow them to do things a little different.

The Space Force has been given a big task, she told SpaceNews. The performance of the Space Systems Command will be key to the success of the service, she said. Raymond really understands space operations. Hes going to need a really smart person to do the acquisition side. If they dont get the right talent in there then they will struggle, Pawlikowski said. They need people who understand how to calibrate risk and work their way through it.

Lance Lord, retired Air Force general and former commander of Air Force Space Command, said having a single command focused on acquisition is good for the culture.

One key objective of the Space Force is to cultivate its own unique culture. In space acquisitions, that would be hard to do when people are in different organizations, Lord said. The Space Systems Command creates a center of gravity.

Lord has closely followed the standup of the Space Force. A lot of thought went into this, he said. Im sure there are things that will create little friction to start with. That happens in any reorganization. But theyre heading in the right direction.
