Third Parties Not Responsible for Defective Motion to Seal – JD Supra

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit held that a district court did not abuse its discretion in denying reconsideration of a previous order denying a litigants defective motion to seal with regard to the litigants own information, but vacated and remanded for further consideration with regard to third-party information. Uniloc 2017 LLC v. Apple, Inc., Case Nos. 19-1922, -1923, -1925, 1926 (Fed. Cir. July 9, 2020) (Mayer, J.).

Uniloc sued Apple for patent infringement in the Northern District of California. Apple moved to dismiss. The briefing on the motion included material that Uniloc had designated as highly confidential. Both parties filed motions to seal. Unilocs motions to seal covered quotations from published opinions and matters of public record, among other things. Unilocs supporting declarations included only boilerplate assertions of harm from disclosure. Non-party Electronic Frontier Foundation asked Uniloc to narrow its redactions, and when Uniloc declined, Electronic Frontier moved to intervene for the purpose of opposing Unilocs sealing motions. The district court denied the motions to seal as overbroad under the local rules, which require such motions to be narrowly tailored.

Uniloc sought an extension of time and ultimately filed a motion for leave to seek reconsideration. In that motion, it agreed to make public more than 90% of the material it had originally sought to seal. It also filed a new motion to seal the remainder. In support, it attached a much more specific declaration supporting sealing the more limited set of materials, as well as several declarations of third-party licensees, who stated that disclosure of their confidential information would be harmful to them. The court denied the motion seeking leave as not meeting the local rules requirements for reconsideration. The court also denied the narrower motion to seal, reasoning that Uniloc should have filed a proper motion to seal in the first instance. Uniloc appealed.

Uniloc argued that the district court had abused its discretion in denying the narrower motion to seal. In considering Unilocs argument, the Federal Circuit distinguished between Unilocs information and third-party information. Applying Ninth Circuit law, the Court held that the district court had not abused its discretion by strictly enforcing its local rules with regard to Unilocs information. Uniloc had violated the local rules in its motion to seal and subsequent motion for reconsideration. Moreover, the Court explained that notwithstanding the submission of a narrowly tailored motion, the burden is always on the moving party to provide compelling reasons for sealing, which Uniloc had failed to do.

Next, the Federal Circuit explained that third-party information calls for an analysis not dependent on the overbreadth rationale because third parties should not be harmed by a litigants failure to follow the local rules. Because the district courts analysis had been based on overbreadth, the Court found that the district court failed to make findings sufficient to allow us to adequately assess whether it properly balanced the publics right of access against the interests of the third parties in shielding their . . . information from public view. It thus remanded to the district court for further consideration of this issue.

Practice Note: In dicta, the Federal Circuit notified the bar that it considered overbroad motions to seal to be a problem in patent litigation, and characterized the district court as having sent a strong message that litigants should submit narrow, well-supported sealing requests in the first instance. Parties should narrowly tailor requests to seal and support such requests with declarations identifying specific harms stemming from the disclosure of the particular information sought to be sealed as well as the parties efforts to keep the information secret.

Maintaining a rhythm of devout prayer and reflection at Lough Derg – Derry Now

The prior of Lough Derg, Father La Flynn who is spending this pilgrim season on the island feels at ease with being alone as he continues to maintain a tradition of prayer in St Patricks Purgatory.

Father La rises in the morning at around 5.40am for early morning Mass.

Less than an hour later, he is under an open sky as birds fly overhead undertaking the Stations in his bare feet leaving solitary footprints where before many soles left their imprint on the earth.

Housemartins

A station takes around an hour and ten minutes to do and Father La does so under the swooping wings of the Housemartins amidst a backdrop of blooming nature during these calm but drizzly mornings.

At 8am, the boatmen come onto the island. Each day Thomas Gallagher from Ballyshannon, Reece McGrath from Pettigo and Joe Sheeran from Mountcharles arrive on the island and undertake their own work. They leave at 4pm.

Really, I can hardly remember the last time in my life I was lonely. I am at ease with my own company, he said.

As they leave the island, Father La is well into his day.

I would be hard pushed to find a time when I have been busier.

People are afraid that I am bored but Im not. The team are exceptionally busy, they have been putting so much work into alternative ways to keep in touch with pilgrims. We have set ourselves to be in outreach mode, he said.

In the evening, Father La goes up to the Basilica for night prayer.

My thoughts are to honour the rhythm of the pilgrimage season, he says.

This year, those affiliated with the island are busy in new and alternate ways.

Father La said that many people have been sending petitions to those on the island: We get a lot of people who send us petitions asking for prayer for this or that, Father La said.

In his prayers, he remains faithful to those people and the heartfelt petitions that they have undertaken to write and to send to the island.

Virtuous pilgrimage

On the last weekend in June, Father La invited people to do the full pilgrimage with him from wherever they were.

It was not a virtual pilgrimage, he said, but a virtuous one and people did fast and pray as if they were on the island.

People signed up online to participate.

Father La recalls that the pilgrimage was one where they were not blessed with favourable weather.

The rain was horizontal. It was driving rain and constant wind.

It was relentless during the night. On Saturday we got through reasonably well, he said.

Those who participated were bestowed with a certificate which carries the Lough Derg seal and are signed by the prior.

All of the certificates had to be sent out by the team to those who participated.

A pilgrimage season did not take place on the island in 1828 as result of a dispute with boatmen.

However, many more pilgrims came to the island the following year.

Pilgrimage path

There is now a newly refurbished path on the lake shore of Lough Derg.

The path which was recently relaunched would have been used by pilgrims in the medieval times.

In the 1400s pilgrims from as far away as Spain, Italy and Hungary used part of this trail as they made their way to what medieval Europe knew of as St Patricks Purgatory.

Work was being carried out on the path before the pandemic struck and six new boards were designed and ready to go when the lockdown came into effect.

There are now six display boards which bring to life the story of the Pilgrim Path and those who walk the path can enjoy stopping to read the boards.

Father La said that the full walk is around 12k along the shore road and to Saints Island.

We went to the point where pilgrims used to cross to Saints Monastery where they were given hospitality before being brought to Station Island, he said.

People can also take a shorter loop and everyone can do the walk at their own pace.

Some people like to do it in soft contemplation and reflection whilst other people like to absorb the surroundings.

Many people enjoy taking photographs in the historic and picturesque surroundings.

I led two guided groups on Saturday and Sunday, he said.

Numbers were limited as a result of the Covid-19 church and State guidelines, those who took part enjoyed it.

One-day retreat

Father La said that it remains to be seen whether a one-day retreat will take place on the island this year.

It remains to be seen whether we can open for a one-day retreat at this time, he said.

However, a meeting for the matter to be discussed will take place before the end of the week.

August 15

It is expected that Father La will remain on the island until August 15.

Enjoying his own company, reflection and prayer, Father La seems content during this years traditional pilgrimage time.

He has now become familiar with a goose who comes onto the island to graze in the grass.

The goose can be found behind St Marys, at times, and when startled will take off honking at great speeds, at times.

His presence is one that the reflective priest appreciates.

I am kind of glad for his company.

It is amazing the company that God sends you when you are on your own, he fondly says.

Fed Circ: 3rd Parties Not Responsible for Defective Motions to Seal – The National Law Review

Modi government shrunk eco-sensitive zones to make way for Oil Indias projects in Assam – Scroll.in

On May 27, an oil well in Assams Tinsukia district began to leak gas and condensate. The blowout eventually sparked a fire on June 9, killing two firemen, displacing over 10,000 local residents, devastating flora and fauna in the surrounding areas, and sparking unprecedented public anger against Oil India Limited, the central government-owned company which drills oil in Assam.

Facing a barrage of local protests, the company has announced plans to cap the well that is, seal and kill it off by this weekend.

But documents submitted to the Union environment ministry reveal that the company has massive expansion plans worth Rs 7,000 crore, which would involve drilling around 260 new wells, in Tinsukia district alone. In other words, the very area where the disaster occurred.

Two expansion projects have already been cleared by the Union environment ministry in April and May. The company is seeking clearances for the remaining projects.

Significantly, the Union environment ministry itself paved the way for these clearances when it asked the state government in 2017 to reconsider the proposed boundaries of the eco-sensitive zone around the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. The park is one of the two ecologically fragile areas flanking the Baghjan oil field where the explosion occurred.

Guidelines framed by the Union environment ministry in 2011 describe eco-sensitive zones as shock absorbers around national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and protected areas. Mining and polluting industries are prohibited within these buffer zones, which could extend up to 10 kilometres from the boundaries of national parks. State governments are supposed to delineate the boundaries of these zones, which are cleared and notified by the Centre.

On the suggestion of the Union environment ministry, Assam government amended its proposal, cutting down the eco-sensitive zone on the southern boundary of the Dibru Saikhowa National Park to zero kilometres. The zone was notified by the Centre in January.

This simple tweak has not only paved the way for the two new projects, it has also set a precedent for more expansion plans.

Questions emailed by Scroll.in to the Union environment ministry have not been answered. This story will be updated if the ministry responds.

The first draft notification for the Dibru Saikhowa National Parks eco-sensitive zone, published by the Union environment ministry on April 8, 2016, had proposed an eco-sensitive zone of 9.144 kilometres all along the boundary of the park. It noted that the park, spread over an uninhabited island of 340 sq km, was rich in biodiversity: 36 species of mammals, 106 species of fish, 104 species of butterflies. It was home to several endangered species, elephants and tigers moved through it.

The draft notification was submitted to the ministrys expert committee on eco-sensitive zones for consideration. In its 24th meeting, held on February 27-28, 2017, the committee noted the presence of oil drilling sites in the vicinity and sent back the proposal to the state government with instructions that it revisit the idea.

By the time the committee held its 37th meeting in September 2019, the state government had submitted a new proposal revising the extent of the eco-sensitive zone down to 658.25 square kilometres. In some parts of the boundary it would be 8.7 kilometres. In others, in deference to Oil Indias objections, it would be zero kilometres.

Since the oil drilling sites were already existing wherein extraction was an ongoing activity, State Govt considered the request of OIL and revised the extent, say the minutes of the 37th expert committee meeting, quoting MK Yadava, the Assam governments representative. Yadava is now Assams acting chief wildlife warden.

The state government cited ongoing exploration as the reason for tapering off the eco-sensitive zone. But, in effect, it paved the way for further expansion in what would have been eco-sensitive zones.

The final gazette notification for the parks eco-sensitive zone was published by the Union environment ministry on January 28, 2020. It said zero extents of the eco-sensitive zone were justified because of the existence of crude oil and natural gas in the immediate vicinity of the southern side of the national park boundary.

Criticising the decision, NK Vasu, former chief wildlife warden of Assam, said eco-sensitive zones should not be cut short merely because of oil exploration. Development activities cant be a concern of the ESZ, he said. The ESZ is designed keeping in mind the interests of the ecology of the area.

Four months after the eco-sensitive zone was whittled down, on April 9, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change cleared Oil Indias Rs 1,067-crore proposal to drill 16 exploratory and development wells, set up four production installations and lay a pipeline under four existing petroleum mining leases: Mechaki, Mechaki extension, Baghjan and Tinsukia extension.

On May 11, Oil India received environmental clearance for hydrocarbon exploration in the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park using a new technology called extended reach drilling. The technique would allow Oil India to drill horizontally from outside the park to tap the hydrocarbon reserves within.

According to documents submitted by Oil India to the Union environment ministry, there would be seven wells using extended reach drilling under the 75 square kilometre Baghjan mining lease, approved in 2006.

These seven wells would be drilled in the three existing plinths, or platforms on which wells stand. That includes plinth for Baghjans well number 5, which burst into flames last month.

Before the January 2020 notification, neither of the new projects would have been possible. The new wells for the extended reach drilling project would be drilled 1.1 to 1.5 kilometres from the national park boundary. When Oil India applied for environmental clearance for the Mechaki Extension project , it noted the project site was 1.7 kilometres from the park.

The environmental clearance for the Mechaki extension project notes how 10 wells and three production facilities, which were earlier falling within 10-kilometre ESZ are now out as per the minutes of the 37th ESZ expert committee meeting.

Oil India had been waiting for the eco-sensitive zone to be narrowed. It gave an undertaking that it would not carry out drilling or construction activities for the Mechaki extension project till the final notification for the eco-sensitive zone was published.

A curtailed eco-sensitive zone helped Oil India bypass other clearances. For example, it needed a National Board of Wildlife clearance for the Mechaki Extension project since many of the drilling locations were within 10 kilometres of the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. In its Form 2 application for prior environmental clearance, the company said it would seek clearance from the National Board for Wildlife. With the new eco-sensitive zone boundaries, that is no longer needed.

It is not required since we are not drilling inside forest land or ESZ area, said Tridiv Hazarika, the spokesperson for Oil India.

Two other proposed projects could gain from the zero kilometre eco-sensitive zone around the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park.

There is the Rs 1,988.62 crore Khagarijan project, where Oil India has 44 development and 10 exploratory wells. In 2016, Oil India had also submitted a proposal for 179 wells, production locations and pipelines in the North Hapjan-Tinsukia-Dhola area in Tinsukia district, a Rs 3,500-crore project.

The 2016 proposal covers areas under five petroleum mining leases, including the Baghjan lease. Documents submitted to the environment ministry, reviewed by Scroll.in, mention that the Dibru Saikhowa National Park, the Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary and the Borajan Wildlife Sanctuary all fall within 10 kilometres of the proposed project.

The documents also specify how the Bherjan Wildlife Sanctuary and the eco-sensitive zone of the Dibru Saikhowa National Park is located within the block area. A part of the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary also falls in the southern part of the block, the document says.

As with the Dibru Saikhowa National Park, Oil India raised objections to the draft notification demarcating the eco-sensitive zone around the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary. At the 37th meeting of the expert committee, Yadava had said that Oil Indias objections were being taken into account as there were drilling sites in the vicinity of the park.

Yadava told the committee that the eco-sensitive zone boundary would be modified in such a way that the extent is up to 1km beyond the southern boundary of PA [protected area] and there is a restriction of drilling activities within that 1 km. The eco-sensitive zone is yet to be notified.

The Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary is the last remaining patch of lowland rainforest in Assam. Over the past few months, the National Board for Wildlifes clearance to coal mining projects close to the sanctuary and revelations of illegal mining in the area have given rise to public anger in Assam. In June, after months of facing public wrath, the state government said it would push for the sanctuary to be upgraded to a national park.

Meanwhile, the Baghjan blowout has led to closer scrutiny of Oil Indias existing operations. Well number five in Baghjan was drilled in 2005. Hazarika said it received environmental clearance in 2011, along with other wells in the area.

We applied for the EC together since Baghjan 5 well was being drilled before the EIA notification of 2006, Hazarika explained. The Environmental Impact Assessment notification of 2006 set up a system of expert committees granting environmental clearances to industrial projects after scrutinising their environmental impact.

In 2011, Oil India got two environmental clearances from the Union environment ministry, one for the six exploratory wells in Mechaki area and one for 26 development wells and 15 exploratory wells in North Hapjan-Tinsukia-Dhola area. According to Oil India claims, the latter covered Baghjans well number five.

The environment clearance for the North Hapjan-Tinsukia-Dhola wells, granted in November 2011, states, No national park/wildlife sanctuary/eco-sensitive area are located within 10 km. Yet, according to the divisional forest officer, Baghjans well number five is just 900 metres from the core area of the Dibru Saikhowa National Park.

The Hindustan Times reported how the wells in the region, including well number five, were not assessed for their wildlife impact and no clearance from the National Board for Wildlife was obtained, even though they were close to the park.

Officials at the Union environment ministry did not respond when asked whether Baghjans well number five had received environmental and wildlife clearances.

Hazarika, however, denied that Oil India had bypassed clearances. We play by the rulebook, he said. We have never concealed anything and have abided by the law. We will only ask for an NBWL clearance when we need to go inside the forest or ESZ. We have never taken shortcuts.

The environmental clearances for Oil India, however, come without an important step in the process mandated by the Environment Impact Assessment notification of 2006: public hearings.

No public hearings were conducted before the environmental clearances were granted to Oil India projects in 2011, documents reviewed by Scroll.in show. The Mechaki Extension and the extended reach drilling projects have also been exempted from public hearings.

The expert appraisal committee, in a meeting that ended on January 1, 2020, acknowledged national importance of the [extended reach drilling] project. It also noted issues in conducting fresh public hearing due to prevailing law, order & local pressures and vulnerability, and granted the project an exemption.

Oil India had told the committee about the alleged problems it had faced in the conduct of public hearings and claimed it could lead to a long delay.

On March 12, about two weeks before the nationwide lockdown against the coronavirus, Oil India did organise a public hearing in Baghjan village. This was for its expansion projects, including North Hapjan-Tinsukia-Dhola, Khagorijan and the extensive reach drilling wells. Although the latter had been exempt, an Oil India official said they decided to include it since there had been confusion about the project earlier and a public hearing was being held anyway.

According to an official of the Assam Pollution Control Board who attended the meeting, the new projects elicited a mixed response. Some supported the projects while others mentioned their reservations, said the official, who did not wish to be named.

The Baghjan blowout may have soured the relationship with local residents even further. People who have lost their property are getting desperate for compensation, said Hemanta Moran, a local government teacher in Baghjan. As local protests continue, the district administration has been entrusted with assessing the compensation amount.

So far, Oil India has deposited Rs 9 crore with the deputy commissioner of Tinsukia for Rs 30,000 interim compensation to around 3,000 families who have been temporarily displaced. By July 27, deputy commissioner will complete the damage assessment and we will pay compensation as per that assessment, Hazarika said.

An official source said capping the well, compensation and the loss of production due to protests had cost the company an amount touching Rs 300 crore.

An Oil India executive speaking off the record admitted the company had lost local trust after the blowout. We have lost the faith of the people; it will take time to regain, he said, adding that rising anger could mean Oil India would have trouble implementing its expansion plans. The priority is to cap the well. We will get to know of the mood of the people after the well is capped and compensation issues are sorted out.

There is still time before the expansion plans are put into action the extended reach drilling project, for instance, still needs to get a forest clearance, which could prove difficult.

We will cross the bridge once we get there, said Hazarika.

Meanwhile, conservationists are up in arms. World Wildlife Fund India said the Baghjan blowout and fire proved, once again, the danger of having a zero-kilometre eco-sensitive zone around protected areas.

A 10 km ESZ should be maintained for all Protected Areas and oil and gas including other developmental activities that could cause potential ecological damage should not be permitted inside ESZs which are a crucial buffer for PAs, the World Wildlife Fund said in response to questions sent by Scroll.in.

The Wildlife Institute of India released a preliminary report in early June assessing the impact of the blowout on aquatic flora and fauna. It noted mass mortality and said the blowout had created environmental conditions that were debilitating to the survival of species.

The Dibru Saikhowa National Park and the nearby Maguri Motapung wetland are home to 40 species of mammals, 500 species of birds, 104 species of fish, 11 species of chelonians, 18 species of lizards, 23 species of snakes, 105 species of butterflies and 680 plant species.

The institute called for a thorough impact assessment before any new drilling takes place. It would be not only prudent but also essential for the wellbeing of all life forms that the approved new wells and further explorations in this area should be initiated only after a thorough investigation of potential impact, as well as evaluating disaster handling capabilities in place, with appropriate technology and trained manpower, the report said.

But who will bear the responsibility of ensuring that environmental norms are met?

Hazarika claimed that questions about zero-kilometre eco-sensitive zones had to be answered by government authorities as they were not determined by Oil India.

Yadava, who represented the Assam government at the eco-sensitive zone committee meeting, heads two state government committees investigating the Baghjan incident and its impact. According to him, the buck stopped with the Centre.

Asked if there was a rethink on how eco-sensitive zones should be designed post the Baghjan incident, he said: No, there is no such thing. We dont decide on the ESZ. It is done by a government of India committee.

Officials of the Union environment ministry, including a secretary and an additional secretary, did not respond to Scroll.ins email with queries about the zero-kilometre eco-sensitive zone of the Dibru Saikhowa National Park and whether there has been a rethink on how eco-sensitive zones are designed in the aftermath of the Baghjan blowout. Gaurav Khare, the spokesperson of the Union environment ministry, promised to get back by Monday evening. The story will be updated if the ministry responds.

Study finds Thames is home to some of the highest levels of microplastics of any river in the world – London News Online

Fall into the Thames these days and you are more likely to choke than drown.

Because the River Thames has some of the highest levels of microplastics of any river in the world, a new study reveals.

Scientists have recorded 94,000 microplastics a second flowing down the river beating the biggest European rivers, the Danube and Rhine, as well as the Chicago River in the US.

There is some doubt on whether Chinas Yangzte river is worse.

Tiny bits of plastic have been found inside the bodies of crabs which live in the Thames.

And flushed away wet wipes are clogging up the shoreline, forming wet wipe reefs, including on the South Bank near Hammersmith Bridge.

Researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London, are calling for stricter regulations on single-use plastics after finding the native shore crab and the Chinese mitten crab are ingesting microplastics.

And careless disposal of plastic gloves and masks during the coronavirus pandemic might make the problem worse, they warn.

Professor Dave Morritt, from Royal Holloway, said: The increased use of single-use plastic items, and the inappropriate disposal of such items, including masks and gloves, along with plastic-containing cleaning products, during the current Covid-19 pandemic, may well exacerbate this problem.

The Thames is cleaner than it used to be for some pollutants, such as trace metals, they say.

But glitter and microbeads from cosmetics, fibres from washing machine outflows and potentially from sewage outfalls were among the pollutants.

Most of the microplastics were from large bottles and food packaging.

Crabs contained tangled plastic in their stomachs, including fibres and microplastics from sanitary pads, balloons, elastic bands and carrier bags.

About 95 per cent of mitten crabs were found to have tangled plastic in their stomachs.

Clams near the wet wipe reefs contained synthetic polymers, possibly from the wet wipes and sanitary items.

Researcher Alex McGoran said: Tangles of plastic were particularly prevalent in the invasive Chinese mitten crab, and we still dont fully understand the reason for this.

The research was carried out by the Royal Holloway with Natural History Museum (NHM) and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).

In total, 135 crabs were examined and 874 pieces and tangles of plastic, mainly in the form of fibres, were removed from their bodies.

Frequently these fibres form tangles of up to 100 pieces of plastic, filling the stomach of many crabs.

Anna Cucknell, ZSLs Thames Project Manager, said: Plastic pollution is devastating for aquatic ecosystems, and I was shocked by the densities we found.

Thanks to decades of conservation two species of seal and more than 100 species of fish including sharks, seahorses and the Critically Endangered European eel, call the Thames Estuary home.

We must not let plastic pollution threaten their survival.

In troubled times, forge path to racial justice – Grand Island Independent

E Pluribus Unum Out of the many, one is the ideal upon which America was founded. It is inscribed on the nations Great Seal and all its coinage. Our history has shown, however, that we have failed to live up to that ideal. In order to at long last form that more perfect union, we must face our most challenging issue: racism.

In the Writings of the Bahai Faith, God addresses humanity with these words:

Know ye not why We created you all from the same dust? That no one should exalt himself over the other. Ponder at all times in your hearts how ye were created.

A recent message from the Bahais of the United States to the nation states:

To create a just society begins with recognition of the fundamental truth that humanity is one. But it is not enough simply to believe this in our hearts. It creates the moral imperative to act, and to view all aspects of our personal, social, and institutional lives through the lens of justice. It implies a reordering of our society more profound than anything we have yet achieved. And it requires the participation of Americans of every race and background, for it is only through such inclusive participation that new moral and social directions can emerge.

In the midst of these extremely troubled times, tragic events have heightened public awareness and rejection of injustice. Let us not miss this opportunity to finally, decisively, confront what is preventing our nation from fulfilling its noble destiny. Please read the entire message, Forging a Path to Racial Justice, at bahai.us/path-to-racial-justice.

How Kym Pine Is Using the ‘Power Of Incumbency’ In Mayor’s Race – Honolulu Civil Beat

In the months leading up to Honolulus mayoral election, the only candidate who currently holds elected office has drastically upped her public relations game.

City Councilwoman Kym Pine has sent out a flurry of press releases from her official city address in the last six months. Her office sometimes sends multiple notices per day, which is far more than any of her colleagues who are not running for office.

With her official council email, Pine has touted her participation in free mask distributions video of which Pine shared on both her official Facebook account and her campaign Facebook in April.

While Pines official communications portray her in a flattering light, they dont mention her mayoral campaign or appeal for donations. Therefore, its probably fair game, according to Sandy Ma, executive director of Common Cause Hawaii, a government watchdog group.

Its the power of incumbency, Ma said.

Pine says shes just responding to the publics increased demand for information during the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, last fall she got a new communications director, Erika Engle, a former journalist.

Pretty much everything we sent out is a request to take a position on something, and they asked all council members, or its something we feel people need to know about, she said.

Still, some see Pines activity as a thinly veiled attempt to campaign on the citys dime.

Anything that even looks like it may benefit your campaign should not be done, said Charmaine Doran, a former director of Honolulus Office of Council Services.

Pine isnt the only one, Doran said. For instance, Mayor Kirk Caldwell finds an occasion to hold a press conference sometimes several times per week, she noted. Meanwhile, he is fundraising to run for governor in 2022.

Last year, Pines office sent out occasional press releases that were aesthetically simple and focused on her positions on legislation before the council. Now, the notices are emblazoned with the city seal and describe the council member speaking out on various topics. Some of them have little to do with her Leeward district or council committee assignments, although she could vote on them if they came before the full council.

One lamented the use of illegal fireworks. Another announced Pine was siding with community members against an affordable housing project in Kailua, which is represented by Council Chair Ikaika Anderson. One notice in April criticized Caldwell for proceeding with a now halted project at Sherwood Forest, which is also in Andersons district.

People from all over the island are asking for help, and we dont turn anyone away. Thats just our policy, Pine said. When someone calls a politician, theyve already tried everything else.

The Honolulu Ethics Commission forbids using city resources for campaign activities. However, ethics guidance states that city resources may be used to support legitimate government purposes within the scope of duties associated with a position. At times, there may be a communications overlap between work and campaign materials, the guidance states.

Without evidence that city resources are being used primarily for political campaign activities, the fact that there is both a governance and a political aspect to an issue does not alone create a violation.

Ethics Director Jan Yamane did not respond to a request for comment.

Pine is working to differentiate herself from the first-time candidates, former insurance executive Keith Amemiya and former TV executive Rick Blangiardi, and the political heavyweights, former Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa and former Mayor Mufi Hannemann, said Neal Milner, a former political science professor at the University of Hawaii.

You use what you have at your disposal, he said. What she is trying to do is to say: Ive got the experience, I know whats going on, but I dont fit in with the big shots raising money or the big shots who used to be candidates and are tainted by the fact that theyve been in politics so long.

Anderson said Pine is just doing her job.

I believe it is absolutely OK for any council member to communicate to Honolulu taxpayers about what theyre doing on the taxpayers behalf, said Anderson, who has given campaign money to both Pine and Hanabusa.

Politicians get overzealous with PR when they want to increase their name recognition, Doran said, but communications should be focused on doing the peoples work.

If anybody can question it, you shouldnt do it, she said.

The great power of imagery always needs to be examined – Reminder Publications

If there ever was a near legendary case of corruption in American politics it was Boss William Tweed and his Tammany Hall organization, the Democratic Party in New York City after the Civil War.

Tweed only was elected to the state assembly, but he looted New York City government like a king with impunity in the mid 19th century. He exercised his power for years. He was brought down through stories in the New York Times and by cartoons by Thomas Nast in Harpers Weekly.

Tweed was reported to say at the time, I dont care a straw for your newspaper articles, my constituents dont know how to read, but they cant help seeing them damned pictures.

Nasts cartoons had real power.

Tweed wound up in prison, escaped and was retuned to prison where he died.

There is an ancient phrase Ive heard my entire life, A picture is worth a thousand words.

As someone who started writing in high school and whose brother is still a highly talented photographer I quickly understood how immediate the impact of an image could be and the difference between the two mediums.

Pictures photos, or illustrations can tell their story in a moment.

This is why today questioning imagery that has been accepted for many years by some members of American society is increasingly important.

I know many people despise political correctness, as some believe it stifles free expression. I think at the core political correctness reminds people that what they say and how they act can share messages that are not always positive.

Im sure now the idea of having legislation in Massachusetts that would change the state seal and motto, as well as eliminate any sports mascot based on an image of a Native American and would protect Native American culture and artifacts is simply another example of political correctness gone amuck for some.

Its not.

Now, Im a 66-year-old white American male. My ancestry hails from the United Kingdom, Bavaria, Switzerland and Holland, primarily. Thats a whole lot of North European whiteness.

My personal experience in life does not include the same experiences other Americans of different ethnic groups have faced and it would be the height of arrogance to even pretend that I can feel what they have felt. I can understand it intellectually, but not emotionally.

I can only sympathize and attempt to be an ally.

So, I have no idea what the actual impact is like to see caricatures of your ethnic and racial group in popular culture, but I bet its not pleasant.

The reality of having a sports teams using Native American imagery, as Agawam High School does, is not appropriate. Yes, I know the word Agawam is the name of the tribe from which William Pynchon bought the property, but the word Brownie conjures up some images that are not positive.

Once again I dont mean to offend the good people of Agawam or their high school, but I wonder if at this time any would suggest considering an update of the image or name.

UMass went through such a change. Their sports teams were originally The Statesmen. In 1948, it was changed to The Redmen with the following reasons cited: The courage, strength, resourcefulness, and charity of the Indians helped sustain the Plymouth settlement, which laid the foundation for subsequent settlements in what we now call Massachusetts. Traditionally, Massachusetts has honored the Indian the name of the Commonwealth itself is an Indian word. The Indian also appears on the seal of the Commonwealth. For centuries, the Connecticut Valley was inhabited by the red man. With the aggrandizement of the Bay Colonys white population, the Indians showed strength and fierceness in defending his lands a strength and fierceness well suited to a football team defending its goal posts.

Nobody considered the term Red Man as demeaning it is nor did they think of the overall history of the Native American population in the state. Defending your existence against genocide is not the same as winning a football team.

In 1983, after many years debate, the name was changed to The Minutemen.

There is a lot of meaning in any image or name or title something to keep in mind.

These ‘mocktails’ taste like the real thing but there’s no booze – The Daily Herald

Some of us are finding that were drinking more than usual during the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps the next time you attend a Zoom happy hour, make a mocktail instead.

Fiona Becketts How to Drink Without Drinking has dozens of recipes for cocktails that dont need alcohol but could confuse the teetotalers among us. The book uses sugar syrups, flavored waters and many items from the garden to make mocktails that hew close to the original drinks.

Here are five recipes from Fiona Becketts book How to Drink Without Drinking.

Lychee martini

It might look incredibly sophisticated, but this cocktail is so simple it hardly deserves to be called a recipe. You can even make it without the alcohol-free spirit if you can find a good enough lychee juice (I like the Rubicon brand). But it really is so pale, pretty and delicious that you should definitely give it a go.

Ice cubes

Scant 1 ounce Ceders Classic or other alcohol-free gin alternative

3 ounce lychee juice, such as Rubicon

1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

A few drops of hibiscus syrup for color (optional)

Edible flowers (optional) and 1 canned lychee, to garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add all the ingredients except the garnish and shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass. Cut the lychee almost in half and slide down on to the rim of the glass to garnish, then serve, sprinkled with edible flowers (if using).

Makes 1 drink.

St. Clements punch

For a long time this has been my go-to for a New Years Day brunch. Given the probable lateness of the night before, you might not feel like juicing all the fruit, particularly if youre doubling up and making it for a crowd, so its fine to use a high-quality chilled ready-squeezed juice (not made from concentrate). I personally like to add a dash of Grand Marnier, which deepens the flavor without making it particularly alcoholic, but you can use an alcohol-free triple sec syrup like Monin, too.

18 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice

10 ounces freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice

18 ounces homemade or real lemonade

2 tablespoons Monin Triple Sec Curacao syrup, Grand Marnier or other orange-flavored liqueur (optional, see above)

Slices of orange, lemon and pink grapefruit, to garnish

Pour the orange and pink grapefruit juices into a jug, top up with the lemonade and stir well. To give the punch an extra edge, add the alcohol-free triple sec syrup or, if you dont mind a very small amount of alcohol, the Grand Marnier or other orange-flavored liqueur. Add a few slices of orange, lemon and pink grapefruit to the jug to garnish and serve.

Makes 6 drinks.

NG&T

Although I love a G&T, Im convinced that many of the things that make it so appealing the tonic, the ice, the garnish, the glass can be replicated in an alcohol-free drink. So much of a drink is about presentation. My local tapas bar, Bar 44, has recognized that and serves an alcohol-free G&T, which I quite often order when Im in there. It comes in one of those huge goldfish-bowl-sized glasses with loads of orange and lemon slices and a few juniper berries floating around in it, which makes you feel like youre having a proper drink. Heres my slightly tweaked version. (The N obviously stands for not.)

4 to 5 ice cubes

2 slices each of orange and lemon

2 to 3 juniper berries

5 tablespoons Juniper Syrup (see below)

Tonic water, such as Fever-Tree Naturally Light, to top up

For the Juniper Syrup:

14 ounces granulated or caster sugar

17 ounces water

15 juniper berries, lightly crushed

Finely pared rind of 1 unwaxed lemon

Finely pared rind of 1 unwaxed lime

To make the juniper syrup, put the sugar in a saucepan and add the measured water. Heat over a low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Add the juniper berries and citrus rinds and bring up to just below boiling point, then simmer for 10 minutes. Take off the heat and leave to cool.

Strain the syrup through a fine sieve into a wide-necked jug or bowl. Pour through a funnel into a sterilized bottle or jar, seal and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

To make the NG&T, add the ice to a large glass, followed by the slices of orange and lemon and juniper berries, then pour in the juniper syrup. Top up with tonic water and serve.

Makes 1 drink.

Tip: You can buy juniper-flavored spirit substitutes online instead of making juniper syrup, if you prefer.

Mulled wine

Im not convinced, as Ive already mentioned, about alcohol-free wine if youre a wine drinker, it really doesnt cut the mustard, but it does make a decent mulled wine, so much so that I found myself thinking when I first made this that I shouldnt really have a glass before I went out to dinner, before I remembered it was alcohol-free. The key is to add elderberry juice to give the drink body, but it is quite bitter, so you do need to add sugar (I like brown sugar) to taste.

8 cloves

2 unwaxed oranges

1 bottle alcohol-free red wine, such as Rawsons Retreat Cabernet Sauvignon

11 ounces elderberry juice (Biona is a good brand)

4 ounces soft brown sugar

Cinnamon stick

Orange oil or orange bitters (optional)

Stick the cloves into the rind of one orange. Pour the alcohol-free wine and elderberry juice into a smallmedium saucepan (you want the liquid to cover the orange), add 4 ounces sugar, the cinnamon stick and 23 drops of orange oil or a shake of orange bitters and bring slowly up to simmering point over a low heat without letting it boil. Take off the heat and leave for 30 minutes to infuse. To serve, reheat the mulled wine. Slice the remaining orange and place a slice into six to eight small cups or heatproof glasses. Pour over the hot mulled wine and serve.

Makes 6 to 8 drinks.

Tepache

Tepache (pronounced teh-patchay) is a Mexican fermented pineapple drink that can be made from just the skin of the pineapple, but I think it tastes better and more fruity using at least some of the flesh, too. Piloncillo, which comes in solid cones, is the authentic sugar to use, available from Mexican grocery stores or online, but any brown sugar will do.

4 ounces demerara or other brown sugar, preferably organic, or piloncillo (see recipe introduction)

18 ounces filtered water

Piece cinnamon stick or bark

3 to 4 cloves

1 small, medium ripe sweet pineapple, preferably organic

Ice cubes and soda water, to serve

Lime slice and/or mint sprig, to garnish

Put the sugar in a saucepan and pour over the filtered water. Heat over a very low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved. Add the cinnamon and cloves, then leave to cool.

Wash the pineapple, then cut off the top and base. Quarter, cutting away the hard central core, cut into chunks and bruise lightly with a meat mallet or rolling pin. Pack as much of the peel and chunks as you can into a sterilized 2 pint preserving jar. Pour over the cooled sugar solution and extra water if needed to ensure that the pineapple is submerged. Give the contents of the jar a stir, then scrunch a piece of nonstick baking paper into the top of the jar to keep the pineapple pieces submerged. Secure a piece of muslin over the top of the jar and leave for 2 to 3 days at room temperature, checking it regularly.

Once you see the liquid starting to froth up, the fermentation has got going. Taste it and see how you like it at that stage, and if necessary leave it to ferment a bit longer (though not too long, otherwise it may acquire some alcohol in the process). Strain the liquid into a jug, then pour through a funnel into a sterilized glass wine bottle, seal and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Serve over ice with a splash of soda water, each garnished with a slice of lime and/or sprig of mint.

Makes about 1 pints.

Chester Park and Ride returns for first time since lockdown – with new route and timetable – Cheshire Live

Chester's city centre park and ride has made a welcome return this weekend.

The popular service, which allows motorists to leave their vehicles outside of the busy centre, resumed on Saturday - the first time since lockdown started in March.

However it will only operate a partial service initially, offering two limited stop cross-city services to the city of Chester and the surrounding area.

Routes are currently available between Wrexham Road and Boughton Heath only.

While the stop on Foregate Street on this route will not be in use due to social distancing measures implemented throughout the city centre.

There will also be strict measures in place to accommodate Covid-19 safety guidelines,

These include Perspex screens to separate passengers from the drivers, reduced operating capacity, and contactless payments only.

Face masks are also mandatory when using the service and signage is in place to remind passengers to socially distance.

Those using the service are advised to book in advance.

The Blue Line service will run from Upton (Zoo) car park to Wrexham Road car park passing through the City Centre.

The Green Line service will run from Boughton Heath car park to Sealand Road car park passing through the City Centre and the Greyhound Retail Park.

Both routes will run every 12 minutes between7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday. While on Saturdays they will run every 12 minutes between8am and 7pm.

On Sundays andBank Holidays there will be a service every 15 minutes betweenthe hours of 9.30am and6pm.

A date has not been revealed for when the full routes and services will be available.

Cheshire West and Chester Councils Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategic Transport, Councillor Karen Shore said: Our Park & Ride service is being reinstated following the Councils careful and cautious approach to the reopening of services during the on-going pandemic.

Coronavirus has not gone away and initially the service will be only partially reinstated. Please plan ahead to allow extra time for your journey, use the Stagecoach app to book your ticket in advance or be ready to make a contactless payment, and try to travel outside of peak times if possible.

Please play your part and follow current social distancing and hand hygiene advice if you wish to use the service.

To support the Councils Walk-Ride-Thrive initiative, we will be improving the sites to include enhanced cycle storage facilities for anyone wishing to continue their journey into the city by bike.

A Stagecoach spokesperson said: Our first priority is the health and well-being of our employees and customers. Were encouraging people to use contactless, as the majority of our customers are now using contactless and other digital forms of payment. If you need to pay by cash to replace a lost ticket, we will only be accepting exact change.

"As we are unable to give you change at this time we will be donating any leftover change, where customers have paid more than the exact fare, to the NHS COVID-19 appeal, a charity supporting NHS staff and volunteers. If you would like to buy a ticket in advance simply download the Stagecoach Bus app."

It comes as a number of pop-up measures have been implemented around the city centre to allow for social distancing.

Pavements have effectively been widened in Northgate Street with the use of plastic bollards down both sides of the road.

Frodsham Street has been closed to all traffic until further notice, resulting in a series of diversions in the city centre.

In future there will be more shoppers queuing outside shops due to restrictions on numbers but wider walkways will allow pedestrians to pass at a safe distance.

Other measures will include one-way systems on the Rows for the same reason.

Troubled Trump changes his tune on mask-wearing, calls it ‘patriotic’ gesture – FRANCE 24 English

Issued on: 21/07/2020 - 04:30

US President DonaldTrumppromised Monday to resume televised coronavirus briefings and finally spoke out in favour of mask-wearing a marked change of tune as polls show him headed for election disaster.

With only just over 100 days until the election against Democrat Joe Biden,Trumpis scrambling to respond to public anger over his troubled months-long handling of the pandemic.

Since the virus first hit the United States,Trumphas insisted that it will just "disappear."

But that sunny claim is now badly strained even among loyal supporters, as they watch Covid-19 cases surge through populous Republican-led states like Florida and Texas.

More widely, polls show public trust inTrump's management of the crisis tanking.

Throughout, he has sought to deny the seriousness of the problem, an attitude symbolized by his mockery of masks and refusal to back up doctors' recommendations for mass use.

Trumpwent some way to addressing that Monday with a tweeted picture of himself in a black mask with the presidential seal and a call for patriotism.

"Many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can't socially distance,"Trumpwrote. "There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!"

However, his tweet stopped well short of endorsing calls from some for a nationwide mandate to wear masks in public.

'Doing very well'

Trump, a lifelong real estate salesman and more recently reality TV performer, says the real problem is that Americans just aren't hearing the right news.

So, likely from Tuesday he will resume the regular evening televised briefings from the White House that he gave until late April, often finding himself accused of giving confusing or misleading information.

"I think it's a great way to get information out to the public," he told reporters. "We're doing very well in so many different ways."

Trumpacknowledged a current "big flare-up" of cases in the country but once again distanced himself from responsibility for the problem, underlining that the disease is also ravaging "Mexico, Brazil, many countries in Europe, all over, Russia."

"When you watch the news, the local news, and you see it, and it's, it's like all about the United States. They never like to talk about what's going on in the world," he said.

Trumpsaid the briefings would focus on good news regarding vaccine development and therapeutics.

"We think we're doing very well in that regard," he said. "I think I'm going to be bringing in some of the great companies that are working very successfully."

"We're really coming up with some very good answers," he said.

PR fiasco

Trumphas great faith in his ability before the cameras. He has transformed the image of the US presidency during his first term with unprecedented streams of press conferences, tweets and rallies.

But his previous spell as the nation's pandemic-spokesman in chief ended badly in late April.

Trumpoften turned what were billed as opportunities to provide the anxious public with information into testy exchanges with reporters in the White House briefing room.

He finally ditched the events after a PR fiasco where he mused on air about the possibility of injecting household disinfectant to combat Covid-19.

He later said he had been speaking "sarcastically," although there was no evidence of that at the time.

Polls slide

The president has consistently sought to play down the severity of the health crisis, hoping that voters will instead focus on what he touts as his good management of the economy.

In an interview with "Fox News Sunday," he once again claimed that the virus, which has killed more than 140,000 Americans and caused massive economic disruption, would somehow go away by itself.

"I'll be right eventually," he said.

But with the virus on the rebound, he finds himself accused of failing to lead.

Biden has opened a double-digit lead in election polls, and an ABC/Washington Post pollreleased Friday showed nearly two-thirds of Americans mistrustTrumpon the coronavirus.

Trump, nevertheless, appears to be looking forward to his chance to get back to the briefing room podium.

"We had very successful briefings. I was doing them and we had a lot of people watching, record numbers watching. In the history of cable television, there's never been anything like it," he said.

OnePlus Buds first impressions: Fast Pair and a great price, but only worth it with the right phone – 9to5Google

After years of skipping over the form factor, OnePlus finally launched its first pair of truly wireless earbuds this week the OnePlus Buds. Ive had the chance to use these earbuds for the past several days, and, as far as first impressions go, OnePlus Buds arent half bad!

Heres the quick summary on what youre getting with OnePlus Buds. This pair of truly wireless earbuds delivers your music through two independent earbuds that come with a charging case. Youll get 30 hours of playback between the buds and the case, and theyll communicate over standard Bluetooth. Its a relatively standard package, really, but at $79, its perfectly acceptable as well.

Being a pair of earbuds, I think one of the most important things to talk about is sound, and thats an area OnePlus Buds didnt let me down in first impressions. The sound quality here is rather good, being at least on par with Googles Pixel Buds, Samsungs Galaxy Buds+, and Apples AirPods. Bass is certainly present despite not being especially strong mainly due to the lack of a seal and most songs sound crisp and clear. Audiophiles wont be impressed, but I think the average customer will absolutely be happy with what the OnePlus Buds offer.

Outside of audio quality, though, I often hinge my opinion on truly wireless earbuds to their smarts. This is an area where OnePlus had me excited, but ultimately let me down. The good? OnePlus Buds use Googles Fast Pair standard. That means these earbuds can quickly pair to your phone without opening Bluetooth settings, and theyll also link to your account for easy setup on other devices you currently own, or will in the future. That support also enables battery levels to be shown on all devices.

The bad? OnePlus Buds are sorely lacking when it comes to touch controls, especially if youre not using a OnePlus smartphone. Ive been using the LG Velvet as of late, and paired to that device I can only use the touch controls on OnePlus Buds to skip tracks. Even play/pause wont work without pulling an earbud out. This all changes when you connect to a OnePlus device, as there youll find an app to control the Buds including customizable touch controls. As someone who uses a lot of different Android phones, I found this really frustrating. For consumers, itll be fine if theyre using a OnePlus phone, but it effectively cuts off a major part of the experience for everyone else. Shame.

When it comes to the hardware, I have mixed feelings. Upon first unboxing the earbuds, I really felt like the hardware was cheap cheap enough to be expected at a dollar store, to be honest but in the several days since Ive come to appreciate it a bit more. I still dont think the hardware on OnePlus Buds feels as nice as Pixel Buds or AirPods, but the matte case is comfortable to hold and doesnt get damaged easily.

What about the comfort of the Buds themselves? This is where things get really subjective. For me, OnePlus Buds fit fine and easily stay in my ears, but that wont be the case for everyone. Basically, if AirPods are comfortable for you, OnePlus Buds probably will be as well.

Battery life is something else I was pretty happy with in my testing, but I dont have sky-high standards in that department. The five-hour battery life of Googles Pixel Buds satisfies me without qualms, so the seven-hour battery on OnePlus Buds was just great. On one especially heavy day, OnePlus Buds were used to stream music while I went shopping, did yard work, and played some video games. Over the course of probably six hours, the battery held up well and the Buds were still comfortable, too. Ive yet to have to charge the case as well.

Overall, OnePlus Buds left a good first impression with me. I dont think theyre perfect, especially when it comes to touch controls, but they are a good product when you look at the $79 price point. Users with a OnePlus smartphone will surely be happy with the Buds, as long as the design works for them.If you dont have a OnePlus phone, though, Id personally look elsewhere.

Well have a full review, video and all for the OnePlus Buds in the coming days to dive further into battery life, sound quality, and more. Stay tuned for that, and leave a comment below to let us know if youre planning to pick up a pair!

Wedding memories and Mother’s raisin pie | Free – Emporia Gazette

July 15 was our twenty-seventh anniversary. Lots of memories throughout the years since Joe and I were married.

This is what my mother wrote in her column in July 1993 about our wedding. Mother wrote,

The weather was ideal for the wedding of daughter Lovina to Joe Eicher. Lots of work at such a time.

The Tuesday before the wedding, which was Thursday, July 15, about two dozen women came to help. They baked 90 pies (oatmeal, cherry, raisin, and rhubarb) and made 14 batches of nothings. Didnt really want that many pies, but that number came upon us before we knew or thought of it. Well anyways no worry to run out of pies.

Wednesday about a dozen girls came to peel potatoes, cut up vegetables for the dressing and make potato salad for which I had cooked a twenty-quart cooker full of potatoes. Also, the tables were set and the last minute cleaning done. Our wash house or shed saw lots of life out there, as all the work was done in there to prepare for the wedding ceremony. Wednesday evening quite a few of our friends came to see the wedding tables, and refreshments were served to the ones that came. It was an enjoyable evening.

Then came the wedding day. We started to fry chicken (300 pounds) at 4:15 a.m. which was served for dinner. Had enough for supper too and also served boneless ham. Our meals consisted of chicken and noodles, gravy, mashed potatoes, dressing, chicken, buttered corn, green beans (which came out of our garden), pork and beans, potato salad, carrot salad, lettuce salad (plenty from the garden), hot peppers, Swiss cheese, fruit salad, tapioca pudding, pies, cakes, nothings, celery sticks, coffee, bread, rhubarb jam, and butter. There were around 18 skillets used to fry the chicken. We cooked 3 twenty-quart cookers of potatoes for dinner for mashed potatoes and 2 twenty-quart cookers for chicken and noodles. In the afternoon we again cooked over 3 twenty-quart cookers of potatoes to be mashed and more chicken and noodles for supper. Also 16 quarts of gravy. There were 28 women to prepare the meals. We could seat 98 people in the house and 70 in the wash house. The tool shed was cleaned out where the wedding services were held and later used to set up a table for the children for the noon and evening meals. We had quite a crowd here for both meals. Well enough of this for now. What a relief to have it over with.

I have so many precious memories of mother and how much she did for her family.

Joe was called back in to work this week after being laid off since March 23. It sure is a relief to us to have his income coming in again.

Yesterday, son Benjamin turned 21, so he wanted the family to come home for supper. He ordered out pizza and wings for all of us. What a treat is was! Chips, cheeseball and crackers, and ice cream were also added to the menu. I didnt get time to make a cake and didnt for daughter Lorettas birthday either. With son Josephs birthday coming up next week, it looks like we will have one cake for all the July birthdays. Its almost too much cake for one month if we have three. Benjamin said he wouldnt eat cake anyway, so he didnt care that there wasnt a cake.

Since I am running out of space, I will write about our family gathering at sister Leah and Pauls house next week.

I will share the recipe for Mothers raisin pie. God bless!

Raisin Pie

2 (8-inch) unbaked pie crusts

1 cup raisins

2 Tablespoons clear gelatin

pinch of salt

1 cup sugar

1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 cup water

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Use one crust to line an 8-inch pie pan. Cook the raisins with water to cover in a kettle over medium heat until plump and juicy, about 15 to 30 minutes. In a bowl, make a thickening with the gelatin, salt, sugar, vinegar, and water. Pour into the raisin mixture. Cook until the mixture is thick enough to stick to a spoon. Add more sugar if it is not sweet enough for you. Pour into the pie shell. Cover the top with the remaining pie crust and seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in the center for steam to escape. Bake for 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Makes 1 (8-inch) pie.

Kerala: Probe reveals more than 180 kg gold smuggled through diplomatic channels – Jagran English

The probe agencies have conclusive evidence that at least 180 kilograms of gold were smuggled and suspect the total amount to increase further.

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: In the latest development in the Kerala smuggling case, probe agencies have found that more than 180 kg of gold was smuggled through the diplomatic cargo. Swapna Suresh and Sarith, two key accused in the case were taken to different locations by the investigative agencies for collecting evidence, NDTV reported.

The investigative agencies, according to reports, are now in the process of recovering the smuggled gold. They have conclusive evidence that at least 180 kilograms of gold were smuggled and suspect the total amount to increase further. The gold was smuggled at least 20 times through the diplomatic route.

The gold scam grabbed headlines on July 5 after customs officials at the Thiruvananthapuram airport intercepted diplomatic cargo and seized 30 kg of gold worth Rs 13.5 crore meant for the UAE consulate office. The episode piqued national interest because diplomatic cargo enjoys immunity from routine Customs examination. The cargo was listed as bathroom fittings, noodles, biscuits and dates, sent from Sharjah-based Al Zatar Spices.

The case is being investigated by Customs and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which has booked Suresh, Sarith, Sandeep Nair and Fasil Fareed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Meanwhile, the NIA has requested Interpol to issue a Blue Corner Notice against- Faisal Fareed, who was allegedly involved in forging seal and emblem of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy to commit his crime.

"The documents were forged by Faisal Fareed to ensure diplomatic protection for the baggage. Fareed is the third accused in the case. The gold smuggled into Kerala was not used for jewellery but terror activities. The accused smuggled gold twice in 2019, in two batches of 18 kg and 9 kg," the NIA had submitted before the special court.

To the Rescue – Youngstown Air Reserve Station

NEW YORK, N.Y. --

A hospital within a hospital, a first of its kind, was the response needed to combat a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans and was rapidly affecting New York, the country and world.

This strain of coronavirus, known as COVID-19, is proving to be as devastating as the 1918 Spanish Flu claiming the lives of over 570 thousand people worldwide since the first known case was reported in Wuhan, China, in November 2019. The virus has since affected more than three million people in the U.S. and over 12 million worldwide according to data gathered by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

In March, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic.

On April 3, Joseph Joey, a paramedic and 308th Rescue Squadron reserve Pararescueman (PJ), was contacted by Dr. Melissa Givens, Medical Director of the Ryan F. Larkin Field Hospital, and Dr. Steven Rush, a retired 103rd Rescue Squadron Flight Physician. Dr. Givens, also a retired Army doctor, along with Dr. Rush, understood the value in bringing aboard special operator force (SOF) medics. They asked Joey if he would be willing to help alleviate the growing pressure on New York hospitals to meet the increasing demand to treat a rapidly growing number of patients experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

New York was one of the most heavily impacted states with rapidly rising numbers of positive COVID-19 cases reported between March and April. The state had just over one thousand positive cases of COVID-19 in mid-March but that number sky rocketed to over 240 thousand positive cases by mid-April, according to the CDC and WHO. This outbreak began to quickly overwhelm the states entire medical system.

Joey didnt hesitate to agree to the call for help and immediately arranged for a flight to New York.

I was ecstatic to have been called by Dr. Givens and Dr. Rush, Joey said. I wanted to be a part of the solution and to help people. Helping people is my passion.

As a traditional reservist, Joey was able to accept the request from the New York doctors in their time of need. Agreeing to use his knowledge, experience and pararescue expertise, Joey flew to NY - putting his life in harms way against an invisible adversary; COVID-19.

Upon arrival, Joey and a handful of medics were requested by the Medical Director of the New York Presbyterian Milstein Center, Dr. Laureen Hill, to create a side unit within the wing of the hospital known as Riverview Terrace. This new unit was to act as a relief valve to the main field hospital in the city.

Riverview Terrace was a conference and banquet space that was converted into a 47-bed ward to support Milstein Hospital, Joey said. We were fully capable of providing full-spectrum patient care to those experiencing symptoms as well as those diagnosed with COVID-19.

Unfortunately, the overwhelmed and understaffed hospitals in the area were unable to provide the personnel required to support this unit inside Riverview Terrace. Thats when Joey stepped in and was asked to recruit and form provider teams while identifying and meeting the logistical needs to accommodate incoming patients.

Luckily, he had amassed an extensive network of fully qualified individuals to fit that need which hed gathered over the course of his military career. He handpicked Air Force Reserve and National Guard PJs, Army medics, SEALs, and civilian professionals to perform their duties as medical providers in this uniquely improvised field hospital. This newly integrated team flew to NYC, immediately established the field hospital and began receiving their first patients within 96-hours of notification. Although this team of 55 professionals had never all met or interacted with each other, they worked with ease and understanding.

Other members from the 308th RQS also answered the call to help to including; Josh, Chaney, Louis, Tyler and Gavin.

Under the directive of the local New York Presbyterian Hospital doctors, this joint force team was able to perform at an elevated scope. They provided a rapid response force with dynamic medial capabilities able to adapt to their environment and the needs of the field hospital as well as other medical professionals.

Riverview Terrace field hospital operated for five weeks and as a result of their efforts, 60 patients received the care they desperately required.

When the surge dissipated, the hospitals were less burdened, Joey said. But our team remained in place and interspersed themselves into other areas of the hospital to continue to provide medical care for another four weeks, wherever they were needed.

Joey explained how grateful he feels to have been given the opportunity to bring together a team of operators and civilians to help accomplish such a monumental task

We integrated well with the hospital system, he said. Im thankful for the positive results and helping the cause.

Joey has been a PJ for six years, during which time he has completed two combat deployments. His first four years he served in the active duty Air Force but he now calls the 308the RQS home, serving in a traditional reserve capacity.

The 308th RQS is a unit within the 920th Rescue Wing and consists ofCombat Rescue Officers (CRO), Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) and Pararescuemen (PJ) which is also known as Guardian Angels. While many candidates enter the 920th from the active duty Air Force, others are accessed directly into the Air Force Reserve. All candidates must pass a physical assessment test which has about 15% success rate.

An Air Force PJ is a special warfare operator, trained to recovery and medically treat personnel in combat and humanitarian environments, at any time, all over the world. They are considered the Jack of all trades. On top of being nationally registered Paramedics, their extensive training includes tactical scuba diving, static and freefall skydiving, high angle mountain rescue, austere survival skills and cold weather training.

The mission of the 308th is to train and maintain the Air Forces only dedicated rescue capability forDepartment of Defensepersonnel, in support of Combatant Commanders wartime objectives as well as peacetime humanitarian and disaster relief activities. They can provide this capability under the harshest of circumstances to include, day/night, inclement weather and all terrain rescue conditions.

Based at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., the 920th RQW is the only Air Force Reserve Command personnel recovery wing. The wing trains and equips over 2,000 Airmen who carry out its mission, to search for, locate and recover U.S. Armed Forces personnel during military operations.

These Things We Do, That Others May Live

Editors Note: The Ryan F. Larkin Field Hospital is named for decorated Navy SEAL Ryan F. Larkin (1987-2017) who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
